FALL 20 1 7

Welcome A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Residents: If you have ever owned a dog, you know it quickly becomes a member of your family. When our yellow lab was diagnosed with cancer, our family began making bucket lists for her to give her something to look forward to and teach our children how to cope with losing a beloved pet. In loving memory of our bucket list dog, I will purchase a pet memorial for her at the West Main Community Bark Park. Engraved, granite bricks surround the base of the bulldog statue inside the Bark Park. The cost for each brick is $100 which includes engraving and installation. Memorial benches add beauty to the Bark Park as well as provide a useful amenity for patrons to enjoy their surroundings. The cost for a 4-foot bench is $1,250 and a 6-foot bench is $1,500. The price includes the bench, plaque, and installation. Some residents have purchased memorials as a living tribute to their healthy dog. It’s a wonderful way to commemorate the life of your furry family member.

NEW LETTER TO COME

Batavia is a dog-friendly community so it makes sense for the Park District to take the lead (pun intended) on making the Bark Park a tail wagging place for you to take your dog. In an effort to expand the amenities of the Bark Park, the Park District is adding agility equipment to the park this fall. You are invited to attend a pet-friendly dedication of the new equipment on Saturday, September 23 from 10 am – noon. The District will be installing a Canine Castle for dogs of all skill and confidence levels to play. With so many different levels of the castle to explore, they won’t want to leave! The Batavia Animal Clinic is generously donating and sponsoring the addition of two new pieces, an Adjustable Bar Jump and a Sit Pretty Wait Table. Local Eagle Scouts are helping with the installation of these new additions. As many pet owners know, dogs like to be engaged. They need attention. The District’s Recreation Team has been innovatively designing programs for you and your Fido. We are now providing unique programs such as Pet Birthday Pawties, obedience classes, and Pet Saver CPR courses. Paws down a good time! Take time for yourself and your four-legged friends this fall!

An applicant can qualify for this program with an income of up to $30,000. The Batavia Fire Department and RSVP jointly sponsor the program. It hopes to help older citizens conform to the Illinois law, enacted in 1987 and 2007, which requires that “every dwelling unit shall be equipped with at least one approved smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in an operating condition within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes.” Call the Batavia RSVP office at 630-406-9993, weekdays between 9:30 – 11:30 am.

To be eligible the person should be 65 or older and a resident of Batavia, Batavia Township or the Batavia Park District. There is no charge for the lock box or the installation. However, because the lock box is expensive, we ask for donations from those who are able to help defray the cost. This is done in cooperation with the Batavia Fire Department. Dance Instructors

Jaime Sjogren has been the dance coordinator the past 11 years, and she returns to teaching classes at Batavia Park District after a hiatus to start a family. Jaime is a seasoned instructor of 20+ years. She has choreographed for theatre productions, performed in the Florida Citrus and Capital One Bowl halftime shows, and performed with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. What’s her favorite part of teaching? “I love recital time but the neatest part of my job is watching a dancer work really hard on a move and then jump for joy when they finally get it. Deena Vargocko began dancing at the Bloomingdale Park District at the age of five in various styles of dance including jazz, tap, ballet, pom and hip hop. She later joined the dance team at Lake Park High School and was a member of the Dance Ensemble. After graduating from Carthage College with a degree in Business Administration, Deena began coaching the Varsity Dance Team at Glenbard North High School. She choreographed dances in various styles including multiple State Champion routines in the hip hop and pom categories. In 2011 she volunteered as a dance teacher in Birmingham, England and in 2012 she was selected to be a member of Dance Stellar Productions, an adult dance group based in Schaumburg. Deena currently resides in Batavia with her husband and two young boys. 26 |26

April Vasica has been with the Park District since the fall of 2013, and has been teaching since she was a junior in high school. She started dancing when she was three years old, both at a dance studio and a park district. While dancing she also was a member of her high school dance team, and still returns to help coach. One of the things she appreciates about teaching at Batavia Park District is the citizen involvement in local events and functions. Her favorite aspect of teaching at the Park District is the ability to be a part of a dancer’s very first dance class, and then seeing them return and grow up, both in age and in their dance technique.

FALL 2017

Mission Statement The goal of the Batavia Park District dance program is to help all dancers improve grace and flexibility while introducing dancers to the beauty and benefits of dance.

PRESCHOOL TUMBLING and GYMNASTICS Tumbling and gymnastics classes are a great way for your child to experience a variety of physical activities. The format of our preschool tumbling and gymnastics classes is a combination of general movement education and specificgymnastics skills. This format also lends itself to the social development of the child. Our trained staff uses safe, progressive and positive teaching techniques appropriate for each age level. Our educated staff is well aware of the importance that music plays in the learning process. Children exposed to music in a learning environment tend to have an easier time with subjects such as math, reading and foreign languages. Music is an integral part of our program.

FALL 2017

Preschool

T

he New Horizons program is designed to provide an opportunity for social and emotional growth as well as a beginning adjustment to a more formal school experience. The program is based on the philosophy that children learn more through play. Play provides opportunities for children of all abilities to participate in common activities, yet allows for success and mastery. This is paramount in the foundation of self-esteem and self-confidence. A knowledgeable staff works together to provide a safe and happy environment. Children are encouraged to think independently, be creative, and freely explore in a structured atmosphere. Social skills, especially conflict resolution techniques, are emphasized. The use of manipulative and sand/water tables allow science and math skills to be practiced. Children learn to sort, match and quantify. They also learn problem solving techniques, tolerance for frustration, the reward of trying an activity again and improving their skill. Language, listening and speech activities are practiced daily through stories, music, finger plays, story writing and dictation. Art and sensory activities focus on the process, not the perfect end product, allowing for freedom of expression and choice. This is essential for the child’s self-esteem. Information on the activities within the classroom is conveyed to the parent through weekly flyers and monthly newsletters. Parent involvement in the classroom is encouraged!

The New Horizons school year runs from the day after Labor Day in September to the end of May. If snow days are used during the school year, those days will be made up after Memorial Day. The “The Young 3’s” program is geared toward having a successful first school/away-from-parent experience. Emphasis is placed on socialization skills as well as building self-confidence and self-esteem. It is understood that not all children will be completely potty trained. Pull-ups will be allowed in this class only. In case of accidents, parents will be required to be available to change their child. Children must be 3 by January 1, 2018 to be in the Young 3 year old program. The Pre-Kindergarten class is designed to meet the needs of children who have late birthdays or may need a growth year. These children must be age 5 by January 1, 2018. Our curriculum will include activities in language, pre-reading, writing and alphabet exercises. We will provide hands-on math, science explorations, cooking experiences and frequent field trips. The program will include small and large group work. If you have questions or would like to observe New Horizons, contact Lori McDonald, Preschool Supervisor at 630-406-5282 ext 2061. New Horizons Preschool is located at the Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren Street.

Honor the Game—

Everybody Wins!

Throughout the year, children participate in a number of athletic programs here at the Batavia Park District. Those programs help children develop skills, build confidence, learn respect and good sportsmanship, and make new friends. Our goal is to offer a positive and encouraging environment for all participants and we ask all parents and spectators to remember a few things… • They are just kids • Coaches are volunteers • This is not the Olympics!

• Officials are human • Cheer for everyone

Thank you for helping the Batavia Park District provide a fun and safe place for kids to play and grow!

Celebrating 40 Years All of Your Soccer Needs Under One Roof

The Tri-Cities Soccer Association (TCSA) was founded in 1977 to provide a fun and healthy environment for area youth, from 4-19 years old, to play soccer. Today, it has grown to be one of the largest independent youth soccer organizations in Northern Illinois with great support from the local park districts. We offer families three levels of participation: RECREATIONAL, CLASSIC and PREMIER.

For more information on TCSA’s offerings, please visit our website at www.tcsa.net, or call 630.377.1101.
