A Message from Our Executive Director

Dear Residents:

As I write this letter, there is a chill in the air and the snow will inevitably be upon us, but what a wonderful time of the year to think about the future.

We are bursting at the seams to reveal the reimagined expansion plan of the Clark Island Recreation Area to you! What started off as a plan to replace the skate park with a different vision than before evolved into a concept that wraps together a fresh and innovative way to infuse a new, invigorating energy into the area. Here are some of the plan highlights:

• The existing skate park equipment will be demolished and replaced with a new skate park consisting of smooth concrete paving and square campus seating.

• The outdated Clark Island bike park will be replaced with a new bike pump track that will consist of concrete ribbons for bikers to test their skills.

• To the north of the parking lots, an outdoor fitness court, “Flex Fitness Space,” will be added for yoga, outdoor training and stretching. This fitness court consists of seven independent workout stations that focus on the following areas/ activities: core, squat, push, lunge, pull, agility and bend. Workouts can be done independently via scanning a QR code on your phone, tablet or laptop or in a more structured manner by registering through the Park District.

• For nature lovers, we will add a monarch waystation with native prairie plants, attracting butterflies of all types, and interpretive signage educating the public about the importance of butterflies in the ecosystem.

• Two multiple stone outcropping fishing stations will lead to the water’s edge from the Fox River Bike Trail. New shade and seating areas also will be included.

Our goal is to build a healthy community with access to free workouts, making outdoor fitness an essential part of people’s lives. These renovated and new amenities will create an active park, inviting pre-teens, teens and adults to recreate with views to the Fox River and access by walking, biking and automobile with its great connectivity to the community.

MISSION STATEMENT

Committed to providing fun, safe, and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that will enrich the quality of life for our residents.

The Park District has applied for an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant through the state to the tune of $600,000. The remainder of the $1.2 million plan will be paid through the Park District’s capital budget. Governor Pritzker is expected to announce the OSLAD grant recipients sometime in 2023.

Your voice matters, and this is the perfect time to express your recreational needs and desires. We are listening! The Park District is conducting a community needs assessment that will be randomly distributed to 3,000 households around the week of Thanksgiving. For those of you who weren’t randomly selected, please stay tuned to our website, bataviaparks.org, as you will still have an opportunity to complete the survey online in the upcoming weeks. Help us shape the future of Batavia for generations to come!

All the best,

The Park Board

Your Park Board is composed of five, nonpaid commissioners selected by you to serve varying terms. The Board is primarily a policy-making body that reflects the needs and interests of all taxpayers.

The Park Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St., at 7:00 pm.

Please feel welcome to attend. • January 17 • February 21 • March 21

New Puppy Introduction

Puppy ages: 4-8 months

Have you recently added a new furry family member? Congratulations! Get your new addition started on the right paw by learning how to help your puppy adapt to their new family life. You’ll learn how to communicate with your pup in a way they’ll understand. We’ll go over what to do about jumping and nipping, along with learning some of the basic cues like sit and stay. Your puppy will also get a chance for some important, beneficial socialization or playtime with classmates while you watch and learn. It is important to learn when play is appropriate and what to do if it’s not. 3-10 dogs per class.

When registering, please register an adult for the class, not your dog.

Puppy Socialization

Puppy ages: 4 months

Socialization is the key to helping a new puppy grow up happy and healthy. In this class, you will learn how to help properly introduce your puppy to all the new people and things they will encounter in their young lives. Topics covered will include things such as children, items on wheels, medical/vet equipment, and other things that puppies find scary. While your puppies get a chance to interact with each other, we will go over what appropriate play is and what to do if it’s not. 3-8 puppies per class.

When registering, please register an adult for the class, not your dog.

Intro to Obedience (Level 2)

Puppy ages: 5 months+ Get your dog started on the right paw with general obedience skills that all dogs (and humans) should know! This class will lay the foundations of training by teaching you, the owner, the principles of dog training, how to easily communicate with your dog, how to increase difficulty of commands once your dog starts to understand them and much more. We will work on engagement with your dog, teach them the “place” command and begin practicing the foundations for loose leash walking. 4-10 dogs per class. When registering, please register an adult for the class, not your dog.

Beginner Obedience (Level 3)

Puppy ages: 5 months+

This class will build off of Intro to Obedience, practicing engagement, the “place” command and loose leash walking while also adding in sit-stay, down-stay, and recall. We will work on increasing your dogs’ focus and continue to improve their skills by practicing longer durations of each cue and adding in more distractions. 4-12 dogs per class. When registering, please register an adult for the class, not your dog.

Intermediate Obedience (Level 4)

Puppy ages: 6 months+

This class is for the humans and dogs who have mastered the skills of Intro to Obedience and Beginner Obedience. The trainer will continue to challenge you and your dog by increasing distance and duration on the skills they’ve already learned, plus we will also introduce waiting at doors and manners when meeting new people. 4-10 dogs per class. When registering, please register an adult for the class, not your dog.

Trick Training for Fun

Puppy ages: 6 months+

Join us for an hour of fun with your furry friend! No pressure, no stress, no anxiety. Just fun! This class is all about teaching your dog some fun tricks. And the best part is, we’ll work on whatever tricks you choose! We’ll supply a list to help you choose what you’d like to do, or you can come with some ideas of you own. Anything goes! We’ll spend the hour seeing what our dogs can do and having a blast making it happen (4-8 dogs per class). When registering, please register an adult for the class, not your dog.

Dance Class Helpful Tips

Tutu Tote: Dance shoes can be expensive, especially with growing feet! Please consider donating your “Tutu Tight” dance shoes to the “Tutu Tight Tote.” This container will remain in the dance room. When your dance shoes become “Tutu” tight, place them in the tote and hopefully a pair inside will fit your dancer. There is no exchange of money. Simply donate “tight” and hopefully find “just right.”

Visitors: Thank you for respecting our NO VISITORS policy. We love our fan club, but visitors pull a dancer’s focus from the instructor. In addition, students feel uncomfortable to learn with other parents (strangers) in the room. Thank you for your cooperation!

Dance Shoes: Dance shoe requirements are noted for each class. You may wait until the week after class begins (Week No. 2) to purchase shoes in the event that a class is canceled. Although we never want to cancel a class, low enrollment may cause class cancellations.

Dance Attire: Please wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion. No denim is allowed. Most dancers are comfortable in leotards/tights or leggings.

Pre-Ballet Ages

3-4

This class introduces simple ballet movements, stretching, and terminology through fun music, cute choreography, and props. Please wear comfortable clothes. Ballets shoes with ties cut off are required.

Through movement and terminology, students learn grace, improve coordination and flexibility, and develop confidence. Ballet 1 is for children new to dance through beginners. Leotard, tights, hair in a ponytail or bun, and leather ballet shoes with ties cut off are required.

Advanced Ballet Ages 10+

Students study the beautiful art of ballet in a fun, yet professional environment. Through movement and terminology, students learn grace, improve coordination and flexibility and develop confidence. Advanced Ballet builds on the steps and terms learned in PreBallet and introduces more advanced ballet terms and movements. Advanced Ballet requires instructor approval before enrolling. Leotard, tights, hair in a ponytail or bun, and leather ballet shoes with ties cut off are required.

Recommended for students who are currently in or planning to participate in a play or musical production, this class focuses on meeting the needs of each actor, and working to achieve the next level of performing for an audience. Through learning and application of techniques, we will work on setting each actor’s goals and finding and fixing performance gaps through individualized coaching on techniques and methods for performance. The second half hour will focus on extension of the craft by digging deeper into character work, objectives, relationships, and putting the words to action to develop a scene or monologue that engages the audience into the world of the character. This class concludes with a monologue showcase on the last day of class.

Batavia Parks Foundation Peace on Earth Campaign

Craig Foltos had a dream to install the message of “PEACE ON EARTH” on the bicycle-pedestrian bridge in downtown Batavia, Illinois. That dream came true through his efforts alongside volunteers and the Batavia Park District. This message of hope is proudly hung annually on the “Peace Bridge” during the holiday season.

Today the dream is expanding with the Batavia Parks Foundation partnering with Foltos to help raise funds for permanent letters with digital LED lighting that will shine all year round.

Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration will not be affected by this new procedure.

GENERAL INFORMATION code of conduct

The Batavia Park District is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for participants in recreation programs. Participants are expected to adhere to fair and safe conduct guidelines. These guidelines apply to the safety of participants, the general public, employees, and volunteers of the Batavia Park District.

A safe environment is where participants, staff, volunteers and the general public are free from physical harm. It is anticipated that some participants may require assistance to participate in the recreation program. This assistance may include accommodations, which will assist participants with unusual behaviors in order to maintain a safe environment for all.

The following actions are prohibited at Batavia Park District facilities and parks:

• Hitting, kicking or throwing objects.

• Inappropriate sexual touching.

• Creating a risk of contagion or illness, whether intentional or not.

• Bringing a weapon to a program or activity or acting in a manner which exposes the participant or others to danger.

• Extreme verbal abuse

• Fighting

• Any other unacceptable behavior including inappropriate dress. Any violation of these guidelines may result in: removal of the participant from the activity for a short period of time; removing the participant from the activity for the remainder of the day; suspending the participant for the next program meeting; and suspending the participant for the remainder of the program season.

batavia park district waiver and release of all claims

Important Information

The Batavia Park District (the “Park District”) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participant’s safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in any activities.

You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for recreational activities. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk

Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks and dangers may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, lack of safety equipment, inadequate or defective equipment, failure in supervision and instruction or officiating, and premises defects. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risk of physical injury to participants in the program(s)/activity(ies), and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with or associated with the program(s)/activity(ies). I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the Park District, including its official, agents, volunteers and employees (hereinafter collectively referred as “Parties”).

I do hereby fully release and forever discharge the parties from any and all claims for injuries, damages, or loss that my minor child/ward or I may have or which may accrue to me to my minor child/ ward in any way associated with the programs(s)/ activity(ies).

I acknowledge I (or my minor child/ward) will abide by local, state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19, as well as facility/program policies, rules, safety directives, etc. I acknowledge if I (or my minor child/ ward) fail to abide by these, my access to Batavia Park District facilities and programs may be revoked at any time and at the Batavia Park District’s sole discretion. I acknowledge and agree federal, state and local guidelines regarding COVID-19 are subject to change and the Batavia Park District may, at its sole discretion, revoke the effectiveness of this document to manage facility capacity, participation in programming and/or use of facilities as well as safety.

Waiver and Release of All Claims and Assumption of Risk

Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in the Program(s), you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with the program(s)/ activity(ies) (including transportation services, when provided).

I have read and fully understand the above important information, warning of risk, assumption of risk and waiver and release of all claims. If registering on-line or via fax, my on-line or facsimile signature shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as the original for signature.

I understand that my child/ward or I may be photographed or videotaped while participating in a Park District program. I give permission for photos and video images of my child/ward or me to be used to promote the Park District’s recreation programs. Such photos and video images remain the property of the Park District.
