Letter from the Executive Director – Christina Ferraro, CPRP

H

istory is important because we can build upon past accomplishments and learn from our mistakes. Here are some fun historical facts about Prospect Heights Park District. • Did you know the Prospect Heights Lions Club and Prospect Heights Fieldhouse Association joined forces in 1955 to protect the area from being annexed to other park systems and to save the pool that was built by the Prospect Heights Lions Club? • Did you know the Prospect Heights Park District purchased the swimming pool from the Lions Club in 1968? • Did you know the recreation center is named in memory of Gary Morava, Prospect Heights resident, and gymnast, who attended Southern Illinois University? The recreation building was in the midst of construction in 1974 when Morava died from a severed spinal cord while warming up on a trampoline. Within two years of his passing, Park District officials dedicated the new recreation center in Gary Morava’s name. • Did you know the Prospect Heights Park District leases School Street Park from Cook County and Country Gardens Park from ComEd? • Did you know the Prospect Heights Park District obtained Somerset Park from the City of Prospect Heights in 1991? The City acquired the property from the developer of the Estates of Somerset Park to be used as public open space and for walking trails. It still serves that purpose today. • Did you know the bird aviary in the lobby was donated in 1996 by the Papandrea family in loving memory of John Louis Papandrea, who passed away at the age of 23? • Did you know that in 2000, Illinois Department of Natural

Prospect Heights Park District MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for all residents of the District through the development and maintenance of park lands and facilities, utilizing available resources, as well as to promote community involvement through a variety of recreation programs, educational opportunities and special events.

Resources (IDNR) helped fund a joint project between the Prospect Heights & Wheeling Park Districts to create a community park site out of two under-utilized neighborhood park areas: John Muir Park, a Prospect Heights park, and Pleasant Run Park, a Wheeling park? • Did you know Dr. Keith Wurtz, a surgeon at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights for 30 years, planted a grove of black walnut trees on acreage next to his Prospect Heights home? The Prospect Heights Park District purchased the property, with the help of a state grant, in 2003. The nearly 8.5-acre grove is now Walnut Woods (off Wheeling Road south of Palatine Road). A sign at the park identifies the land as having belonged to the Wurtz family. • Did you know in 2017, a Nature Preserve was developed in Lions Park through a grant from ComEd, which was matched by the City and the District? The City’s Natural Resources Commission created the two-acre parcel of this interpretive nature park. • Did you know the Old Orchard Country Club was established and designed by the Wickersham family; purchased in 1952 by the Newman family, and in 1999 was purchased by the Prospect Heights Park District? There is still a commitment to offering country club services and conditions to the general public. • Did you know the Prospect Heights Bike Path is over four miles of asphalt with several areas of natural prairie habitat? It begins across the street from the Prospect Heights Metra station at Wolf and Camp McDonald Road and follows the ComEd power line easement to Schoenbeck Road. You can add nearly two miles if you continue to Lake Arlington! Can you add to the list of the Prospect Heights Park District history? We would love to hear from you. Email info@phparks.org

2020–2021 School Year September 8, 2020 – May 12, 2021

Our program consists of half structured and half unstructured class time. Our structured curriculum incorporates Jolly Phonics and Handwriting without Tears. A typical day would start with exploratory time when children choose from a variety of centers including painting, iPad use, manipulative toys, and dress– up. During this time children will complete a craft for the day in small groups. After clean–up time children learn songs, counting, alphabet, sounds, and calendar on the rug. Music, musical instruments, puppets, and large muscle movement are alternated. After snack time, academic papers are completed. We reinforce using scissors, gluing, shapes, colors, numbers, letters, matching, sequencing, and sorting. The end of the day includes a visit to the park or indoor gym. The program incorporates trips which may include: fire station, library, pumpkin patch, and amusement centers. An extra charge for admission and/or bus fee is required for some trips.
