Letter from the Executive Director Christina Ferraro, CPRP

P

rospect Heights Park District has several community involvement opportunities for residents to help further the mission of the Park District to enhance the quality of life for residents by developing and maintaining parks and facilities.

including pruning, removals, and planting trees to help staff make more informed decisions. If there are residents interested in a new volunteer opportunity to assist trees in overcoming the challenges of an urban environment to grow and thrive in the community, please contact me.

We need your feedback. During the district wide master planning process, surveys and meetings were held to collect feedback from users and the community about the Park District programs, parks, and facilities. We heard loud and clear that we need more room in the Gary Morava Recreation Center for programs and socializing. The District then conducted a feasibility study to determine if the recreation center should be renovated or rebuilt. While the study was paused due to COVID, the feasibility study now focuses on the swimming pool facility attached to the recreation center. Meetings are being held to collect feedback about the aquatics programs and the amenities at Lions Pool. This project will continue through the fall season, and it will also require more feedback from users and the community. If you are interested in sharing your thoughts with us about the recreation center and/or the swimming pool, please contact me.

We need those who are inspired to support parks and recreation. The Park District recently introduced the Prospect Heights Parks Foundation. The Foundation, a charitable group, aims to bring together fundraising and volunteering to support parks and recreation in this community. Residents interested in serving on the Board of Directors for the Foundation, please contact me.

We need those with a passion for trees. The Park District was recently awarded the Urban and Community Forestry grant to conduct a district wide inventory of trees and a tree maintenance plan. The plan outlines routine maintenance,

ArtWalk Thank you to Prospect Heights artists Kate Tully and Mara Lovisetto and other local artists for providing this unique art experience.

4

Kate Tully and Mara Lovisetto collaborated last fall with the Prospect Heights Park District to continue the Sunflower Project with a seven week outdoor display at Lions Park entitled the Scarecrow ArtWalk. Several local artists joined this initial ArtWalk that the Prospect Heights community enjoyed. Spookfest participants, Creative Kids Preschool students and KinderStop students were also impressed with this unique art experience. “We are thrilled to be working with Kate and Mara. They are so talented and dedicated to this community,” said Christina Ferraro, Park District Executive Director. Stay tuned for our next ArtWalk. Please contact Julie Caporusso at phparks.org for further information.

ArtWalk at the Prospect Heights Park District—How it Got Started. Do you remember when a gallery of sunflower artwork sprouted along Hillcrest Lake in Prospect Heights? It began when Mara Lovisetto, a Prospect Heights resident and elementary school teacher in Northbrook, was virtually teaching art to students during the stay-at-home order. The assignment was to create sunflowers out of anything they find in their homes. “Van Gogh’s paintings of sunflowers are among his most famous. He thought they were symbolic of the sun. I wanted the students to enjoy sunflowers and

know that everything would be ok. The sun would come out,” said Mara. As she told her friends and neighbors how this sunflower project brought joy, the idea for the popup art along Hillcrest Lake was born. Friends, neighbors, and families worked simultaneously, yet apart, to create sunflower-related artwork and created a beautiful outdoor display that many could enjoy while being socially distant. Artist Kate Tully contributed several pieces and enjoyed the festival atmosphere it created.

hen you drive by Izaak Walton Park, 201 North Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights, you will see a pop-up gallery of nature-inspired art on exhibit through the summer. The ArtWalk exhibit is part of a series of pop-up art galleries connecting the arts and the community and celebrating local creativity. “Our purpose in creating this exhibit is to incorporate an artistic side to our community,” said Kate Tully. “We wanted to create an event that brought people together,“ she added.

2021–2022 SCHOOL YEAR September 7, 2021 – May 13, 2022

The Creative Kids Preschool program provides an age-appropriate curriculum to develop a child’s love of learning. Our curriculum provides a safe, nurturing environment that allows the children to grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Children participate in various activities every day, including art, movement, math, science, storytime, and group learning, which are designed so that students can find their successes. Our curriculum incorporates Jolly Phonics, STEM, and Handwriting Without Tears. We strive to prepare children for kindergarten, and our program gives children the tools and experiences they need to ensure a positive transition. In our two-year program, some ongoing skills are taught, such as recognizing and printing first and last names with upper and lower case letters, naming basic colors and shapes, reciting numbers 1-20, count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, letter recognition, number recognition, sounds, sight words calendar, and weather. Our teachers help the children learn good work habits, follow directions, socialize, share, and establish self-direction.

active adults Square Dancing Fun This is not your grandparent’s square dancing! Today’s social square dancing teaches you the basic calls and gets you out dancing with other square dancers in the Chicagoland area with confidence and competence in a shortened time. Square dancing is also an excellent form of exercise because of all the walking you do to the beat of the music; it is social because of all the friendly people you meet. It is mentally stimulating because of the calls you learn and respond to while dancing. All these benefits go hand-in-hand with having fun! And while Country and Western have certainly been the traditional music for square dancing, today’s dancers move to a variety of music, including current rock hits. As long as the music has a good beat, it is suitable for square dancing! Singles, couples, and young people ages 12 and older are welcome to attend these beginning classes.
