Letter from the Executive Director – Christina Ferraro, CPRP

I

hope this finds everyone healthy and safe. It has been quite a year, and the COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone. We have all adopted behaviors to effectively prevent the spread of COVID, and people look forward to resuming their normal activities. This raises a reoccurring question: what is the “new normal”? It is yet to be seen, but I think we have witnessed glimpses of it. The impact of COVID-19 on Prospect Heights Park District has accelerated unprecedented change. It began with the cancellation of programs and activities and the Gary Morava Recreation Center and the Old Orchard Country Club temporary closings. Playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, and athletic fields were off-limits. Large public gatherings, like the Annual Block Party, were canceled. Lions Pool did not open for the season. The governor issued a stay-at-home order, which contradicts what park districts represent: gatherings and socialization. Our daily lives shifted in ways we would never have imagined. We were all compelled to adapt quickly and identify creative, unconventional ways to operate and survive. We had to learn how to greet people without a hug or a handshake and keep in touch with friends and family using Zoom. The park district staff strived to respond effectively. We clarified our purpose, which is to enhance the quality of life for all residents of the District. How do we do this? We did this by developing and maintaining parks and facilities while promoting community involvement through programs and special events. The Parks Department and the Grounds Department worked hard to keep the parks and the golf course when the stay-at-home order was in effect. More people were walking, biking, and golfing to clear their minds, stay active, and socialize when they could. The Recreation and Golf teams worked hard to create programs that were both safe and enjoyable. Working with the state guidelines, they adapted quickly to offer virtual programs and special events so individuals could remain active while being socially distant. Here is a glimpse of their creative adaptations: A virtual Preschool graduation with a curbside diploma pickup. Families ordered pizza

Prospect Heights Park District MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for all residents of the District through the development and maintenance of park lands and facilities, utilizing available resources, as well as to promote community involvement through a variety of recreation programs, educational opportunities and special events.

while logging in to play virtual bingo. Seniors attended virtual tours of museums and various countries. And, the Recreation team redesigned Summer camp. As the governor lifted the state restrictions and new guidelines were put in place, the golf course and the parks eventually opened to the public. Slowly the recreation center opened, and programs resumed. Usage of the fitness room, racquetball court, and open gym are available but now require reservations for each. Throughout the pandemic, it became apparent to staff that the park operations had to be adapted to manage recreational life digitally. The park district’s digital experience continued to evolve and adapt to new expectations and behaviors—from both residents and employees. Staff had to reimagine the digital experience for the future: more communication through social media, digital program guides, virtual programming, more online registration, remote access for staff teleworking, virtual board meetings, etc. Staff reported easier networking with their peers via Zoom. Their peer networking or virtual brainstorming meetings about programs and procedures were more accessible than traveling long distances to regular meetings. When schools announced remote learning, staff designed an eLearning Camp to provide a safe, supervised environment for students to plug into their classrooms. The eLearning camp required expanding access to Wi-Fi to support virtual education in the recreation center. Of course, conscious that there is a digital divide, we are mindful of those without access or the skills to register or make a reservation online. Each of us is learning to deal with a new way of working, living, and interacting with each other. Maybe the “new normal” is learning how to manage life digitally to respond effectively and quickly to change? Perhaps the “new normal” is—change. Regardless, COVID has affected sports, school, travel, etc. but we will be stronger as we adapt to change.

Creative Kids Preschool Creative Kids Preschool The Creative Kids Preschool program provides an age-appropriate curriculum to develop a child’s love of learning. Our curriculum provides a safe, nurturing environment that allows the children to grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Children participate in various activities every day, including art, movement, math, science, storytime, and group learning, which are designed so that students can find their successes. Our curriculum incorporates Jolly Phonics, STEM, and Handwriting Without Tears. We strive to prepare children for kindergarten, and our program gives children the tools and experiences they need to ensure a positive transition. Throughout our two-year program, some ongoing skills are taught, such as recognizing and printing first and last names with upper and lower case letters, naming basic colors and shapes, reciting numbers 1-20, count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, letter recognition, number recognition, sounds, sight words calendar, and weather.

Square Dancing Fun Join us for some square dancing fun with the Arlington Squares Dance Club. Today’s square dancing is exercise because of all the walking you do to the beat of the music; it is social because of all the friendly people you meet, and it is mentally stimulating because of the calls you learn and respond to while dancing. All these benefits you will gain while having fun! And while Country and Western is undoubtedly the traditional music for square dancing, today’s dancers move to a variety of music, including current rock hits—as long as music has a good beat, it can be used for square dancing! Both singles and couples are welcome to attend lessons, and no prior experience is needed. Dance assistants (called “Angels”) will be there to guide you. Wear casual clothes and comfortable shoes. No classes during spring break. Code Dates Days Times Fee 7:00-9:00pm $105 306010-05 2/11-5/27 Th Th 7:00-9:00pm FREE CLASS 306010-04 2/4

Spring Bird Walks Learn where to look for birds in your community! Join expert birders, Mary Lou Mellon & Lee Ramsey, and several PHNRC Commissioners from the Prospect Heights Natural Resource Commission & Bird Conservation Network as we walk around the Slough. Experience the wonder of birds and learn how to spot and identify them. Children welcome with adults. Please bring binoculars if you have them and dress for the weather. We will meet at the Gary Morava Picnic Shelter. We will travel to and from the Slough on a bus. This class is free, but you must pre-register. Helping others along the way, past and present Lions have had the growing experience of sharing in projects and the activities of Lions. Thanks to the countless hours spent by our members over the years, thousands of dollars have been raised and spent in development of many civic and recreational services, in a people helping each other movement. We can have confidence in the knowledge that we, the Lions of Prospect Heights, Illinois have contributed to the welfare of our fellow citizens and gone beyond our borders to serve the principles of Lions International in all national and state projects. TREE FOR LIFE Honor a loved one, a cherished organization or commemorate a special event by donating a tree to the Prospect Heights community. Donated trees are planted in one of the Park District’s fourteen sites plus the golf course. A staff member will consult with you to choose an appropriate tree and park location. All tree donations are acknowledged with a personalized engraved Gold Leaf and leaves are displayed on a plaque at the Gary Morava Recreation Center. Please call the Superintendent of Parks at 847-394-2848 if you would like additional information.

INCLUSION ASSISTANCE

SAY CHEESE! If you have great photos of you and your family or friends enjoying the Prospect Heights Park District’s parks, programs or special events, we’d love to see them! Please forward photos for consideration to Julie Caporusso at jcaporusso@phparks.org at the Prospect Heights Park District. Be sure to include the name of the photographer and those of your subjects so that we can be sure to give you credit for the photo. We reserve the right to photograph and videotape all park district program participants for use on our Web site, brochures, newsletters, cable station programming, etc.

NEW Parks Foundation If you are interested in serving on a committee or the newly formed Parks Foundation, please contact Christina at cferraro@phparks.org Top three reasons you should volunteer to serve on a Prospect Heights Park District committee: 1. To maintain the quality of life you expect in your community. 2. To give back to your community. 3 To have fun accomplishing things around your community together with your neighbors.
