KENYA
Learning disabilities often go un-diagnosed, with most kids being written off as just slow and lazy For families with kids who have learning disabilities, it is not easy to cope, if they live in the city, there are schools and institutions where the children can be assisted and taught by teachers who have been trained to handle their predicament, However, for rural families, there is nothing much they can do except keep the children at home.
In some societies these children are viewed as cursed and are hidden by their parents who are ashamed of them…when in fact the parents are just not aware of the situation. The several schools started to care for children with disabilities include Thika school for the blind and Kenya Community Centre for Learning
However, it is to be noted with concern that these schools can only accommodate only 2% of children with learning disabilities.
IN ADDITION‌
A lot of non-governmental organisations have been formed in Kenya to improve the situations and raise awareness about people living with various disabilities As the government allocates little money for such causes, most of which may not even be used correctly, individuals in one way or another affected by disability will start an organisation through forming networks.
One good example is the Kenyan Paraplegic Organisation, founded by a man who was shot in the back and suddenly found himself unable to walk He was able to afford treatment outside the country but when he was rehabilitated, he realised that majority of kenyans, if so afflicted, would not be able to go outside to seek treatment
The organisation raises funds through an annual walk, an annual dinner, sales of wrist bands and tshirts…among others. This money is spent buying wheelchairs and other equipment for those in need of them but who are unable to access them. As of now, they are running a campaign aimed at building a spinal injury rehabilitation centre in Kenya, one which shall be the second of its kind in all of Africa!
AZERBAIJAN
Actually Azerbaijan government provides people with the high quality of living. As part of the population, disabled people are also provided with every high condition. Azerbaijan ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol in January 2009. This Situation Assessment of People with Disabilities in Azerbaijan has been commissioned by the United Nations Children’s Fund in Baku, Azerbaijan, together with the United Nations Development Programme, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, and Social Services Initiative. It provides comments on the compliance of the main legislative acts of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the CRPD, highlights areas of good practice, and provides recommendations for amendments and enactment of legislation to address gaps in the current legislative framework. Also, the available services for people with disabilities in Azerbaijan are assessed and the application of the social model of disability in Azerbaijan is analysed.
In addition, in Azerbaijan majority of disabled people are not going to school so the Azerbaijani government is working on this issue in order to increase the number of disabled students.
