This year Policy Press (PP) is celebrating 25 years since it was launched and Bristol University Press (BUP) is marking its fifth anniversary. Y EA RS

We publish pioneering scholarship and social commentary which aims to influence research, education, policy, practice and wider culture and thereby support social change. Since the beginning, our mission has been to show the damage done to individuals and society by social problems and structural inequalities and how enlightened, evidence-based interventions can mediate this and positively change lives. Social challenges, from the local to the global, have of course become greater and ever more urgent: as 2020 has showed us, we can no longer talk about social justice without focusing on racial, gender and environmental justice.

GLOBAL SOCIAL CHALLENGES JOURNAL | 4

Bristol University Press is delighted to announce its first fully open access journal. “I’m proud to see Bristol University Press launching this important new journal, which promises to address the most urgent complexities of global social challenges by drawing together accessible international scholarship across the disciplines to inform policy and practice.” PROFESSOR JUDITH SQUIRES, DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PROVOST, UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL

How can we reimagine society in an era of climate change, pandemic, hunger, poverty, questions of racial, ethnic and gender justice and other pressing global societal challenges? Significant threats and dangers lie ahead of us, but so do opportunities, as new ways of being, thinking and doing emerge. This new, fully open access journal aims to facilitate thinking about these positive new trajectories and to become the journal of choice to address the complexities of global social challenges across disciplines and fields. It will be the first such journal to be based in the social sciences while also engaging with research from humanities, arts and STEM. Including marginalised, minority and indigenous world views, the journal will be an important home for research that contributes to the creation of alternative futures that acknowledge past injustices and are socially and environmentally just and sustaining.

Woke Capitalism

How Corporate Morality is Sabotaging Democracy Carl Rhodes, University of Technology Sydney “This insightful book traces the history and manifestations of ‘woke’ ideas in relation to big business, capitalism and democracy – reading it will reveal how awake you really are!” THOMAS CALVARD, UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH BUSINESS SCHOOL

”As the world reels from the impact of COVID-19 on people’s lives, what role do corporations play in our democratic processes? Is the concept of ‘woke’ being used to further corporate interests, and deepen current levels of inequality? This accessible and compelling book addresses these questions and provides new insights.” KATE KENNY, J. E. CAIRNES SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, NUI GALWAY

“Businesses increasingly talk about value, purpose and responsibility. In this beautifully written book, Carl Rhodes asks us to consider whether these companies can be trusted with our collective futures. Can we trust corporations when they speak about equality and justice?” MARTIN PARKER, UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL

From Nike’s adoption of Colin Kaepernick to Gillette’s engagement with the toxic masculinity debate, the 21st century has seen a sharp increase in corporations taking over public morality, a phenomenon which has come to be known as ‘woke capitalism’. Carl Rhodes takes us on a lively and fascinating journey through woke capitalism, from 1950s corporate social responsibility, through 1980s neoliberalism, alongside the adoption and mutation of the term ‘woke’ from Black American culture, bringing us right up to current-day debates. Examining the political causes that woke capitalism has adopted and the social causes that it has not, he argues that this surreptitious extension of capitalism has serious implications for us all.

This Separated Isle Invisible Britain

Edited by Paul Sng, writer and filmmaker “We British folk are all over the place. We come from all over the place, we move all over the place, and our ideas are all over the place. This book reflects that. Here are pictures, and words, with a real sense of place. I love it.” BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH, POET

“Arguments about Brexit, immigration and wokeness are fuelled by the secular decline of imperialism and decades of deindustrialisation. This stunning book of diverse stories and wonderful portraits shows us that removing the imperialist baggage of the UK state presents us with new cultural and political opportunities.” IRVINE WELSH, WRITER

“As bleakly poetic and forlornly beautiful as its title suggests, there’s very little I’ve seen recently that more encapsulates what an odd, fractured and divided little nation we’ve become – though with the potent flipside that the voices and images in this book represent mini beacons of hope in their quiet defiance and inspiring determination to build a better and braver world.” DANIEL YORK, ACTOR AND DIRECTOR

This Separated Isle explores how concepts of ‘Britishness’ reveal an inclusive range of opinions and understandings about our national character. Featuring a diverse range of fascinating photographic portraits of people from across the UK and their accompanying narrative stories, this landmark book examines the relationship between identity and nationhood, revealing not only what divides us, but also the ties that bind us together as a nation.

Policing the Pandemic

How Public Health Becomes Public Order Lambros Fatsis, University of Brighton and Melayna Lamb, independent writer and academic “Makes a compelling case for a critical assessment of what the COVID-19 pandemic can tell us about policing, health and governance all of the time. Lively, topical and precisely what we need.” PETER SQUIRES, UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON

“Offers us an urgent, rigorous and visionary response to a world in which the response to ill health is state violence. The authors provide a thoroughly researched and compelling case for alternatives to policing, not just as a response to disease and infection, but in all areas of public life.” ADAM ELLIOT-COOPER, QUEEN MARY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the inadequacies of the state’s response to public health and public order issues through deeply flawed legislation. Written in the context of the #BlackLivesMatter protests, this book explores why law enforcement responses to a public health emergency are prioritised over welfare provision and what this tells us about the state’s criminal justice institutions. Informing scholarly, civic and activist thinking on the political nature of policing, it reveals how increasing police powers disproportionately affects Black people and suggests alternative ways of designing public safety beyond a law enforcement context.

Emphasising job creation and social justice, the book is very pertinent for the post COVID-19 recovery.” CLAIRIE PAPAZOGLOU, ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANT

“A pioneering work on how to harness banking and green economics into a mutually reinforcing symbiosis. The authors understand economics and political possibilities and their work is more than timely.” DENIS MACSHANE, FORMER UK MINISTER OF STATE FOR EUROPE

Cultural Sexism

The Politics of Feminist Rage in the #MeToo Era Heather Savigny, Independent Feminist Scholar “A powerful contextualization of the barriers to change, doing justice to our feminist legacies, while operationalizing the core ground of political, social and media theory. Savigny gives us the clarity and vision to ‘rage, reverse and repoliticise’. All men should read this … it is time to get onboard.”

HELEN WOOD, UNIVERSITY OF LANCASTER

Heather Savigny highlights four key traits of cultural sexism – violence, silencing, meritocracy and masculinity – prevalent across the media, entertainment and cultural industries that keep sexist values firmly within popular consciousness. She traces the development of key feminist thinkers before demonstrating how the normalisation of misogyny perpetuates patriarchal values within our everyday social and cultural landscape. She argues that we need to understand why #MeToo was necessary in order to bring about meaningful change.

Women, Media, and Elections Representation and Marginalization in British Politics Emily Harmer, University of Liverpool In the century since women were first eligible to stand and vote in British general elections, they have relied on news media to represent their political perspectives in the public realm. This book provides a systematic analysis of electoral coverage by charting how women candidates, voters, spouses and party leaders have been portrayed in newspapers since 1918. The result is a fascinating account of both continuity and change in the position of women in British politics.

Paperback £27.99 | US $47.95 ISBN 9781529222623 Hardback £80.00 | US $120.00 ISBN 9781529222616 ePUB £27.99 | US $47.95 ISBN 9781529222630 234 x 156 mm 288 pages UK January 2022 US February 2022 Bristol Studies in International Theory

The book bridges two important debates in the field: the case for the relevance of quantum theory to the social sciences and the pressing need for a more global IR. Drawing on key thinkers in political theory, the book examines parallels between quantum physics and ancient Asian traditions – Daoism and Buddhism – and explores their implications for mind, action and strategy in conditions of radical uncertainty. The conclusions drawn illustrate the value of interdisciplinary and global approaches in helping us better understand world politics.

Flexible Europe

Differentiated Integration, Fairness, and Democracy Richard Bellamy, University College London, Sandra Kröger and Marta Lorimer, University of Exeter The European Union (EU) is often portrayed as sacrificing national diversity for European unity. This book explores the alternative of a flexible EU based on differentiated rather than uniform integration. The authors combine normative theory with empirical research on political party actors to assess the desirability and political acceptability of differentiated integration as a means of accommodating heterogeneity in the EU. They examine the circumstances and institutional design needed for flexibility to promote rather than undermine fairness and democracy within and between member states.

The Richer, the Poorer

How Britain Enriched the Few and Failed the Poor: A 200-Year History Edited by Stewart Lansley, Townsend Centre for International Poverty Research, University of Bristol “An important and illuminating book; an essential antidote to the outdated and iniquitous idea that some people are worth more than others.” KATE PICKETT, UNIVERSITY OF YORK

For 200 years, Britain’s most powerful elites have been allowed to enrich themselves at the expense of surging inequality and mass poverty. This landmark book charts the roller-coaster history of both rich and poor, and the mechanisms that link wealth and impoverishment. Stewart Lansley traces the way financiers and executives have ruthlessly exploited their power to extract existing wealth at the cost of livelihoods and social resilience. He examines the bitter ideological rifts that have driven society back to the divisions of the past and asks why rich and poor citizens are judged by very different standards, and why the ‘cycle of privilege’ is as embedded today as it was a century earlier.

The Strengths Approach in Practice How it Changes Lives

Avril Bellinger and Deirdre Ford, Plymouth University and Students and Refugees Together (START)

In a climate emergency the strengths approach is needed now more than ever. Commonly misunderstood, its true power as a whole systems approach to release the potential of individuals, communities and their environments has been neglected. For those brave enough, this book offers theoretical and practical encouragement. The authors use a case study of their work with a unique NGO in the UK that combines student placements with support to refugees. They illustrate what it really means to adopt a strengths approach in practice. Chapters include the strengths approach to funding, organisational development, management and governance as well as immigration law, student learning and research. This book will give readers grounds for optimism as well as transferable practices for challenging social injustice.

“This is a timely, important and optimistic book – a conceptual and practical antidote to the challenges of our times.” CRAIG HAMMOND, LIVERPOOL JOHN MOORES UNIVERSITY

How can higher education contribute to tackling today’s complex challenges? In this wide-ranging book, Anke Schwittay argues that, in order to inspire and equip students to generate better responses to global challenges, we need a pedagogy that develops their imagination, creativity, emotional sensibilities and practical capabilities. Schwittay proposes a critical-creative pedagogy that incorporates design-based activities, experiential teaching, serious play and futureoriented practices. “Andrew Coyle argues convincingly that taking a Human Development approach would lead to a dramatically reduced need for prison. A must-read book for politicians, policy makers, advocates for justice, as well as those who think our prisons are serving us well.“ EILEEN BALDRY, UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

“Who better than an enlightened Governor of Prisons and Professor in Prison Studies to discredit the belief that by locking up offenders we are reforming them? In a thoroughly readable first-hand account of imprisonment and criminal justice systems around the world Professor Coyle has conveyed a universally applicable message: ‘Prisons can damage people’; they need a hard second look.” RANI DHAVAN SHANKARDASS, PENAL REFORM AND JUSTICE ASSOCIATION (PRAJA) (INDIA)

How do governments and societies use prison to respond to underlying and fundamental social, economic and political issues? Using data on world imprisonment and numerous international examples from his personal experience, Coyle, a prison practitioner, academic and international expert, discusses the failings of prison around the world. Acknowledging the influence of external agencies, such as the Committee for the Prevention of Torture, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and court interventions in the use of solitary confinement, he offers some positive pointers for the future and how there might be a better distribution of resources between criminal justice and social justice by an application of the principles of justice reinvestment.

Revisiting the young men interviewed in Deuchar’s original Glasgow fieldwork over a decade later, this book ascertains how early exposure to gang culture and weapons acts as a path to wider types of offending.

“Responding to the history and call of ‘Nothing about us, without us’, this collection of essays clearly shows how and why criminological theory and criminal justice policy is ineffectual without such participation and inclusion.” DYLAN KERRIGAN, UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER

Incorporating the experiences of service users, academics, state and grassroots practitioners, this volume captures the voices of marginalised groups and explores how criminology can authentically incorporate these voices.

Minority Ethnic Prisoners and the COVID-19 Lockdown Issues, Impacts and Implications

Avril Brandon, Maynooth University and Gavin Dingwall, De Montfort University “Thoroughly researched and expertly written, this book makes a vital contribution to the battle for racial equity in criminal justice. Providing profound insights into the legacy of the pandemic, Brandon and Dingwall’s work will have a lasting - and truly global - impact.” RT. HON. DAVID LAMMY MP, SHADOW SECRETARY OF STATE FOR JUSTICE

This insightful book identifies the risks posed by prison lockdowns to minority ethnic prisoners, foreign national prisoners and prisoners from Traveller and Roma communities across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It documents the unequal impacts on their mental and physical health, feelings of isolation and fear, access to services and contact with visitors.

JENNIFER M. PAGE, UNIVERSITY OF ZURICH

Police shootings and incarceration inequalities are just two examples of the legacy of slavery in the US and UK. Offering a criminological exploration of the case for slavery and anti-Black racism reparations, this book refutes the policy perspectives that argue against reparations.

The Criminalisation of Social Policy in Neoliberal Societies Elizabeth Kiely and Katharina Swirak, University College Cork “This book brings proportionate and rigorous analysis to the question. Its conclusions are not necessarily pessimistic; it is lucid and clear without oversimplifying the debate.” MARY CORCORAN, KEELE UNIVERSITY

From anti-terrorism agendas to the punishment of the poor and the governance of parenting, this book explores how diverse fields of social policy intersect more deeply than ever with crime control and in so doing, deploy troubling strategies.

Sharon Grace, University of York, Maggie O’Neill, University College Cork, Tammi Walker and Hannah King, Durham University, Lucy Baldwin, De Montfort University, Alison Jobe, Durham University, Orla Lynch, University College Cork, Fiona Measham, University of Liverpool, Kate O’Brien, Durham University and Vicky Seaman, University College Cork

Accounts of female offenders’ journeys into the criminal justice system are often silenced or marginalised. Featuring a Foreword from Pat Carlen and inspired by her seminal book ‘Criminal Women’, this collection uses participatory, inclusive and narrative methodologies to highlight the lived experiences of women involved with the criminal justice system. It presents studies focused on drug use and supply, sex work, sexual exploitation and experiences of imprisonment. Bringing together cutting-edge feminist research, this book exposes the intersecting oppressions and social control often central to women’s experiences of the justice system and offers invaluable insights for developing penal policies which account for the needs of women.

Land Renewed

Reworking the Countryside Peter Hetherington, journalist “Peter Hetherington’s book is a delight to read. He explores how restoring nature can lead to better farming practice and food production, address climate change and strengthen the rural economy.” SALLY SHORTALL, NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

“Wide-ranging, stimulating, provocative and at times enraging, the book is packed with practical insights into a big, too often neglected question: how should we use our land?” SHAUN SPIERS, GREEN ALLIANCE

Feeding Britain while preparing for the ravages of climate change are two key issues – yet there’s no strategy for managing and enhancing that most precious resource: our land. This book explores how the pressures of leaving the EU, recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing global heating present unparalleled opportunities to rework the countryside for the benefit of all. Incorporating personal, inspiring stories of people and places, Peter Hetherington sets out the innovative measures needed for nature’s recovery while protecting our most valuable farmland, encouraging local food production and ‘re-peopling’ remote areas. In the first book to tackle these issues holistically, he argues that we need to reshape the countryside with an adventurous new agenda at the heart of government.

Political Ecologies of Landscape

Governing Urban Transformations in Penang Creighton Connolly, University of Lincoln Drawing on the recent changes in the Malaysian state of Penang, this book opens up new perspectives on urban development, governance and the politics of place. Reviewing the role of residents, activists, planners and other experts in socionatural changes and urban regeneration, it builds an important new framework of landscape political ecology.

Inside High-Rise Housing

Condominium and Home in the Vertical City Megan Nethercote, RMIT University Informed by residents’ accounts of Australian high-rise living, this book shows how legal and physical architectures fuse in ways that jeopardise residents’ experience of home and stigmatise renters. As cities sprawl skywards and private renting expands, this compelling geographic analysis of property identifies high-rise development’s overlooked hand in social segregation and urban fragmentation and raises bold questions about the condominium’s prospects.

Care and the City Ethics of Urbanism

Juliet Davis, Cardiff University “This unique, timely book shows how urban design can change for the better if it recognises interdependence and dependence as basic to how cities are organised – in short, by becoming care-full.” CHRISTOPHER GROVES, CARDIFF UNIVERSITY

This original study makes a compelling case for a more ethical approach to urban development and management. Countering conventional thinking, it uses case studies to show how a philosophy of caring can promote the wellbeing of our cities’ many inhabitants.

The Gendered Face of COVID-19

The Development, Gender and Health Nexus in the Global South Jean Grugel and Matt Barlow, University of York, Maria Eugenia Giraudo, Durham University, Tallulah Lines and Jessica Omukuti, University of York This important book draws on research across sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America to assess what the COVID-19 pandemic means for gender inequalities in the Global South, examining how threats to equitable development will impact the most marginalised and at-risk women and girls in particular. It is a guide to stimulate the important debate about how to promote women’s rights during the management and recovery phases of the pandemic.

Concrete Cities

Why We Need to Build Differently Rob Imrie, University of London “Interesting and stimulating. It is well written, and I loved reading it… the book is an important contribution to the existing literature.” DAVID CLAPHAM, UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

“With clarity, insight, and persuasive evidence, Concrete Cities shows that the drive to build is a cultural logic rooted in extractive practices, which ought to be replaced with more care for people - human and non-human. This book is essential reading for urbanists, geographers, and others committed to more liveable worlds.” AIMI HAMRAIE, VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY

“With madness of ‘build, baby, build’ tragically ascendant, even hegemonic, Rob Imrie’s powerful, wide-ranging, and fascinating book systematically and cogently injects urgently needed sanity and judiciousness into the policy discourse.” DAVID IMBROSCIO, UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE

This accessible critique of urban construction reimagines city development and life in an era of unprecedented building. Exploring the proliferation of building and construction, Imrie sets out its many degrading impacts on both people and the environment. Using examples from around the world, he illustrates how construction is motivated by economic and political ideologies rather than actual need, and calls for a more sensitive, humane and nature-focused culture of construction. This compelling book calls for radical changes to city living and environments by building less, but better.

“Challenges understandings of urban vacancy to expose its complexities, its vibrant politics and possibilities. It will be a key resource for urbanists, especially as they address cities’ emergence from COVID-19.”

PAULINE MCGUIRK, UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG

This book provides an innovative perspective to consider contemporary urban challenges through the lens of urban vacancy. The contributors develop new empirical insights that rethink ruination, urban development and political contestation over the reuse of vacant spaces in post-crisis cities across the globe.
