SPRING 2022 CATALOGUE GLOBAL SOCIAL CHALLENGES JOURNAL || 5 5
Bristol University Press is delighted to announce its first fully open access journal. “I’m proud to see Bristol University Press launching this important new journal, which promises to address the most urgent complexities of global social challenges by drawing together accessible international scholarship across the disciplines to inform policy and practice.” PROFESSOR JUDITH SQUIRES, DEPUTY VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PROVOST, UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
How can we reimagine society in an era of climate change, pandemic, hunger, poverty, questions of racial, ethnic and gender justice and other pressing global societal challenges? Significant threats and dangers lie ahead of us, but so do opportunities, as new ways of being, thinking and doing emerge. This new, fully open access journal aims to facilitate thinking about these positive new trajectories and to become the journal of choice to address the complexities of global social challenges across disciplines and fields. It will be the first such journal to be based in the social sciences while also engaging with research from humanities, arts and STEM. Including marginalised, minority and indigenous world views, the journal will be an important home for research that contributes to the creation of alternative futures that acknowledge past injustices and are socially and environmentally just and sustaining.

Urgent Business
Five Myths Business Needs to Overcome to Save Itself and the Planet Ian Thomson and Dominic Bates, University of Birmingham “As someone who helped develop the UN’s Global Goals, I know how crucial this fast-disappearing ‘decade of action’ is to averting an apocalyptic future, which is why this book is so important in helping translate the Goals into practical steps every business can take now. “ PAUL POLMAN, CEO OF UNILEVER
“I wish I had the advantage of this book in shaping the responsible business journey of the consumer goods companies I was a leader in.”
ANDRAEA DAWSON-SHEPHERD, C-SUITE EXECUTIVE, GLOBAL FMCG/ CPG
“Many books claim to inform the new science of ESG (environmental, social and governance), but here’s a novelty: a well-informed, broad-based, practical guide to help purposeful, responsible business do things right.”
TOM LEVITT, CONSULTANT, SECTOR 4 FOCUS, CO-FOUNDER FAIR FOR YOU
Getting business on board is essential if we want to achieve the United Nations’ goal of building a better future for people and planet by 2030. But much of the sustainable business agenda falls woefully short of what is needed, with some practices even accelerating the problems they’re trying to solve. Ian Thomson and Dominic Bates, a business school professor and a former journalist, combine their expert insight to challenge five common myths that trap businesses in an unsustainable black hole and offer a manifesto for change. Combining cutting-edge research – from AI and systems theory to climate science and behavioural economics – with fascinating real-world examples, the authors highlight the practical and holistic steps all businesses can take to play their part in addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Unlikely Candidate
What Losing an Election Taught Me about How to Change Politics Ali Milani, Labour Party politician, councillor and activist “Ali Milani has inspired so many more young people to get involved in politics. He is a force to be reckoned with.” AFZAL KHAN MP
Across the Western world, people are desperate for a radical shift in the kinds of politics and politicians that they are presented with. Primary defeats to established figures and shock results in referendums are becoming the norm, while ‘outsiders’ are shaking up political cultures. In this book, Ali Milani, a rising star in the UK’s Labour Party, brings a unique perspective to the key political issues we are now facing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to show how young people from different backgrounds can engage in politics. Using his rollercoaster campaign against Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the UK’s 2019 general election and his time in Bernie Sanders’s campaign team, he inspires a new generation of political leaders from the disenfranchised, disillusioned and marginalised to usher in a new wave of diverse voices and experience in mainstream politics.

The Rules of Democracy Marcial Bragadini Boo, Chief Executive of UKPHR
“Straight from the machine room of democracy, Marcial Boo explains how it functions and what’s next. Highly recommended.”
ANDREAS BUMMEL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DEMOCRACY WITHOUT BORDERS
“This novel and contentious book shows how democracy can respond to the challenges of globalisation and technology. Marcial Bragadini Boo makes a thoughtful contribution to the debate around democratic alternatives to populism and authoritarianism.” MATTHEW FLINDERS, UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD
The world can be run better. Democracy is the most effective way to take back control over decisions that impact people’s lives. But democracy must evolve following a global technological revolution which has increased fears that global trade and immigration threaten our identity, that we face environmental ruin and that cybercriminals and Big Tech can do as they please, unchecked, and all made worse by COVID-19. This book presents a road map for more accountable democracy locally, nationally and internationally. Marcial Bragadini Boo proposes updating rules, so politicians are better held to account, public services improve and people contribute to their communities too. New rules of democracy may help find solutions to global problems and ensure everyone is fairly represented at the decision-making table.

The Cruel Optimism of Racial Justice Nasar Meer, University of Edinburgh “Nasar Meer weaves together an impressive account, drawing on research in a number of national contexts, to address the question of why there has been a failure to achieve the objective of racial justice. This masterful account should become an important part of future conversations by researchers and policymakers about how we can lay the foundations for radical change in this vital area of the social world.” JOHN SOLOMOS, UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK
“Timely and insightful, provides not only a clear mapping of our current context with regard to racial justice, what has been achieved, what has been obscured and what has failed, but also what can be done. An essential read in the current reactionary conjuncture and provides us with ways in which to think our past, present and future in more hopeful and just terms.” AURELIEN MONDON, UNIVERSITY OF BATH
A dominant view of racial justice has long been linked to a ‘cruel optimism’ which normalises social and political outcomes that sustain racial injustice, despite successive governments wielding the means to address it. Researchers, activists and minoritised groups continually identify the drivers of these outcomes, but have grown accustomed to persevering despite strong resistance to change.
Paperback £14.99 | US $26.00 ISBN 9781447363026e ePUB £14.99 | US $26.00 ISBN 9781447363033 216 x 138 mm 184 pages UK March 2022 US April 2022 21st Century Standpoints NEW IN PAPERBACK
Looking at numerous examples across antiracist movements and key developments in nationhood/nationalism, institutional racism, migration, White supremacy and the disparities of COVID-19, Nasar Meer argues for the need to move on from perpetual crisis in racial justice to a turning point that might herald a change to deep-seated systems of racism.

The Death of The Left
Why We Must Begin from the Beginning Again Simon Winlow and Steve Hall, Teeside University
“This is probably the most important book to emerge in the humanities and social sciences in the last two decades.” TARA BRABAZON, FLINDERS UNIVERSITY
“The Left is dead. Its ailments cannot be cured. In its current form it cannot win elections, transform the economy, or advance the interests of the broad multi-ethnic working class.” Winlow and Hall argue that the only way to resurrect what was once valuable in leftist politics is to declare the left dead and begin from the beginning again. They focus on key historical moments when the left could have pushed history in a better direction.
They identify the root causes of its maladies, describe how new cultural obsessions displaced core unifying principles and explore the yawning chasm that now separates the left from the working class. Drawing upon a wealth of historical evidence to structure their story of entryism, corruption, fragmentation and decline, they close the book by outlining how a new reincarnation of the left can win in the 21st century.

Escaping Dystopia Rebuilding a Public Domain
Stephen McBride, McMaster University
“Clearly identifies the challenges facing us, and what we can do about them. It should be required reading for everyone who wants to advance change.” RANDALL GERMAIN, CARLETON UNIVERSITY
“For anyone seeking to rethink political economy for the 2020s, including the rules governing global capitalism, Escaping Dystopia has provided a valuable roadmap.”
SIMON LEE, UNIVERSITY OF HULL
Multiple crises have led many to conclude that the current economic and political system is broken. The present and future look increasingly precarious – if not outright dystopian. Stephen McBride calls for radical solutions to these crises to provide a more rational and sustainable future. He also critiques other potential responses which would further curtail democracy and increase the inequalities associated with neoliberal globalism. Demonstrating how mainstream ideas, powerful interests and political institutions face major challenges but block progressive alternatives, he argues that for radical transformation to succeed, major institutional changes are necessary.

Radical Empathy
Finding a Path to Bridging Racial Divides Terri E. Givens, Centre for Higher Education
“Radical empathy, integrating, actually requiring, empathy for self along with others, and prioritizing action, is exactly what our culture needs most to get closer to living our ideals.” ELISA CAMAHORT PAGE, INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT
“With a background not that different from her likely readership, Dr Givens outlines a difficult path to integration: Radical Empathy, one I profoundly believe in. If we are to heal the wounds of the world, we will only do it if we first connect, and then understand.” CHUCK PEZESHKI, WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY
“Many people and companies are all talk and no action. Givens shares her story and perspective while blending in her deep research and experience on racial inequity. This is the playbook for how to heal our rifts and better connect with each other.” MARIA ROSS, RED SLICE, PODCAST HOST, AND AUTHOR OF THE EMPATHY EDGE
In the USA, political developments in the 21st century have shown that deep racial divides remain. The persistence of inequality indicates the stubborn resilience of the institutions that maintain white supremacy. To bridge our divides, renowned political scientist Terri Givens calls for ‘radical empathy’ - moving beyond an understanding of others’ lives and pain to understand the origins of our biases, including internalized oppression. Deftly weaving together her own experiences with the political, she offers practical steps to call out racism and bring about radical social change.

The Forgotten City
Rethinking Digital Living for Our People and the Planet Phil Allmendinger, University of Cambridge
“A vital-needed corrective to so much of the unthinking smart cityism out there promising the taming of wicked urban planning problems. Be distracted by this engaging book instead of your mobile phone or laptop.”
NICHOLAS A. PHELPS, UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE
“Not only does this book make the important connection between resilience and digital technologies, but it does what very few have done: it places people at the centre of smart cities.” NANCY ODENDAAL, UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN
“A solid foundation on which to build the next chapter of the love affair between the city and technology – the Smart City post COVID-19.” IRENA BAUMAN, BAUMAN LYONS ARCHITECTS
We all want cities, where more than half of the world’s population currently live, to be just, successful, clean, fair, green, sustainable, safe, healthy and affordable. Will ‘smart cities’ help achieve these aspirations or undermine them in the time of COVID-19? Phil Allmendinger, a world expert on cities, development and urban governance, takes a critical approach to the role of ‘smart’ in future cities and the relationship with city development. Considering how technology can support active citizenship, he challenges the commercial drivers of Big Tech and warns that these, not developments for ‘social good’, may dominate. Focusing on the dangers posed by social media, the platform economy and AI, he sets out what those making decisions on city development need to understand in order to save the planet through active politics and healthy cities.

Populism in Central Europe is part of a worldwide response to neoliberal globalisation, whose disastrous effects determined the region’s brutal transition to capitalism.

In this startling and original book, Kalmar uses examples from popular culture to sport to reject as racist the idea that Central Europe’s cultures are incompatible with liberal democracy.
The Roots of Racism The Politics of White Supremacy in the US and Europe Terri E. Givens, McGill University “Successfully brings together the personal, professional and important; timely and much needed.”
AARON WINTER, UNIVERSITY OF EAST LONDON
Racism has deep roots in both the United States and Europe. This important book shows how policies have developed over a long history of European and White American dominance of political institutions and policies that maintain White supremacy. Givens examines the connections between immigration policy and racism that have led to the rise of anti-immigrant, radical-right parties in Europe, the rise of Trumpism in the US and the Brexit vote in the UK.

Agonies of Empire
American Power from Clinton to Biden Michael Cox, London School of Economics and Political Science
“Michael Cox has long been one of the most intelligent and original scholars of America’s grand career on the modern world stage. In this engaging collection of essays, he offers a compelling portrait of an unsettled superpower that is at once an empire and a liberal democracy.” G. JOHN IKENBERRY, PRINCETON UNIVERSITY
“A fascinating critique of American foreign policy since the end of the Cold War by one of Britain’s leading analysts.” JOSEPH NYE, AUTHOR OF DO MORALS MATTER? PRESIDENTS AND FOREIGN POLICY FROM FDR TO TRUMP
“Mick Cox’s collected essays provide a bounty of smart insights for anyone trying to make sense of the twists and turns in American foreign policy over the past thirty years.” JOHN J. MEARSHEIMER, UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
Divided at home and facing a world sceptical of American claims to be the ‘indispensable nation’ in world politics, it is clear that the next few years will be decisive ones for the United States. But how did the US, which was riding high only 30 years ago, arrive at this critical point? In this volume, Michael Cox, a leading scholar of American foreign policy, outlines the ways in which five very different American presidents – Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump and now Biden – have addressed the complex legacies left them by their predecessors while dealing with the longer-term problems of running an empire under increasing stress. In so doing, he sets out a framework for thinking critically about US foreign policy since the end of the Cold War without ever losing sight of the biggest question of all: can America continue to shape world affairs or is it now facing long-term decline?

China’s Rise and Rethinking International Relations Theory Edited by Chengxin Pan, Deakin University and Emilian Kavalski, Jagiellonian University Bringing together leading scholars from Asia and the West, this book investigates how the dynamics of China’s rise in world politics contributes to theory-building in International Relations (IR). The book demonstrates how the complex and transformative nature of China’s advancement is also a point of departure for theoretical innovation and reflection in IR more broadly. In doing so, the volume builds a strong case for a genuinely global and post-Western IR. It contends that ‘non-Western’ countries should not only be considered potential sources of knowledge production, but also original and legitimate focuses of IR theorising in their own right.

Whistleblowing and Retaliation in the United Nations Edited by Caroline Hunt-Matthes, Webster University Geneva and Alexis Bushnell, National University of Ireland This illuminating book combines first-hand accounts of United Nations whistleblowers with academic reflections of their experiences. Queer Politics in Contemporary Turkey Paul Gordon Kramer, Nazareth College Drawing on the words and stories of queer Turkish activists, this book aims to unravel the complexities of queer lives in Turkey. In doing so, it challenges dominant conceptualisations of the queer Turkish experience within critical security discourses. The book argues that while queer Turks are subjected to unchecked forms of insecurity in their governance, opportunities for emancipatory resistance have emerged alongside these abuses. It identifies the ways in which the state, the family, Turkish Islam and other socially meditated processes and agencies can expose or protect queers from violence in the Turkish community.

UNMAPPING THE 21ST CENTURY
Unmapping the 21st Century Between Networks and the State Nicholas Michelsen and Neville Bolt, King’s College London Drawing on post-structural political theory, this book explores two dominant concepts used to make sense of our disturbed reality: the state and the network. In seeking a better understanding of today’s world, this book argues that we need to pull apart the familiar lines of our maps. By looking beneath and across these lines, an ‘unmapping’ presents new insights and opportunities for a better future.

This book argues that these issues stem from reliance on a utilitarian public policy framework. It examines five key areas of public policy: monetary, private property and liability, the structure of the state, product markets and labour markets. Through its analysis, the book draws on the German ordoliberal tradition of political economy to offer an alternative public policy framework.
Saving Liberalism from Itself The Spirit of Political Participation Timothy Stacey, Leiden University In the wake of populism, Timothy Stacey’s book reflects on what is missing from the liberal project with the aim of saving liberalism. It explains that populists have harnessed myth, ritual, magic and tradition to advance their ambitions, and why opponents need to embrace rather than eschew them. Via examples of liberally minded activists in Vancouver, it presents an accessible theorisation of these quasireligious concepts in secular life.

Flexible Europe Differentiated Integration, Fairness, and Democracy Richard Bellamy, University College London, Sandra Kröger and Marta Lorimer, University of Exeter “A highly stimulating and innovative take on differentiated integration.” DIRK LEUFFEN, UNIVERSITY OF KONSTANZ
The European Union (EU) is often portrayed as sacrificing national diversity for European unity. This book explores the alternative of a flexible EU based on differentiated rather than uniform integration. The authors combine normative theory with empirical research on political party actors to assess the desirability and political acceptability of differentiated integration as a means of accommodating heterogeneity in the EU. They examine the circumstances and institutional design needed for flexibility to promote rather than undermine fairness and democracy within and between member states.

AURELIEN MONDON, UNIVERSITY OF BATH
A dominant view of racial justice has long been linked to a ‘cruel optimism’ which normalises social and political outcomes that sustain racial injustice, despite successive governments wielding the means to address it. Researchers, activists and minoritised groups continually identify the drivers of these outcomes, but have grown accustomed to persevering despite strong resistance to change. Nasar Meer argues for the need to move on from perpetual crisis in racial justice to a turning point that might herald a change to deep-seated systems of racism. This book addresses the issue of colour-blind racism through an examination of the circular logic used by the juvenile justice system to criminalise non-White youth. Drawing on original data, including interviews with court and probation officers and juvenile self-reports, the authors call for a need to understand racial and ethnic inequality in the juvenile justice system from a structural perspective rather than simply at the level of individual bias. Justice in a Time of Austerity Stories From a System in Crisis
Jon Robins, journalist and author and Daniel Newman, Cardiff University “A timely and vital exposé of the pressures exerted upon our justice system by a decade of political neglect, giving a much-needed voice to those who, as a result, have found themselves cut off from justice.” THE SECRET BARRISTER
“[This] powerful and important book shows the human impact of austerity … should be read by all politicians and policy advisers.” THE TIMES
“Successive governments have been keen to emasculate challenge, and suppress the impoverished. Long before austerity, long before COVID-19, right up to the 2021 Budget. No mention of justice, let alone provision. This book has the history, has the contemporary narrative. It is the voice missing from the empty rhetoric of politicians and gives a stark measure of a society without due process.” MICHAEL MANSFIELD QC
How are poverty and social inequality entrenched through a failing justice system? In this important book, Jon Robins and Daniel Newman examine how the lives of people already struggling with problems with their welfare benefits, jobs, housing and immigration are made much harder by cuts to legal aid and the failings of our creaking justice system. Over the course of 12 months, the authors carried out interviews on the ground with people as they were caught up in the justice system, in a range of settings such as foodbanks in a church hall in a wealthy part of London; a community centre in a former mining town; a homeless shelter for rough sleepers in Birmingham; and a destitution service for asylum seekers in a city on the south coast, as well as in courts and advice agencies up and down the country. The authors argue that a failure to access justice all too often represents a catastrophic step in the life of the person concerned and their family. This powerful, yet moving, account humanises the hostile political debates that surround legal aid and reveals what access to justice really means in Austerity Britain.

Key Themes and Perspectives Ian Cummins, University of Salford Police officers deal with mental illnessrelated incidents on an almost daily basis. Ian Cummins explores how factors such as deinstitutionalisation, community care failings and, more recently, welfare retrenchment policies have led to this situation. He then considers how police officers should be supported by community mental health agencies to make confident and correct decisions, and to ensure that the individuals they encounter receive support from the most appropriate services.

Minority Ethnic Prisoners and the COVID-19 Lockdown Issues, Impacts and Implications
Avril Brandon, Maynooth University and Gavin Dingwall, De Montfort University
“Thoroughly researched and expertly written, this book makes a vital contribution to the battle for racial equity in criminal justice. [it] will have a lasting – and truly global – impact.” RT. HON. DAVID LAMMY MP, SHADOW SECRETARY OF STATE FOR JUSTICE
If prison regimes had continued as normal during the COVID-19 lockdown, social distancing would have been impossible. Therefore, sweeping restrictions were imposed confining prisoners to their cells, cancelling communal activity and prohibiting visits from family and friends. This insightful book identifies the risks posed by prison lockdowns to minority ethnic prisoners, foreign national prisoners and prisoners from Traveller and Roma communities across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. It documents the unequal impacts on their mental and physical health, feelings of isolation and fear, access to services and contact with visitors. The legacy of the lockdown will be profound. This book exposes the long-term significance and impact on minority ethnic prisoners.

End of the Road
Reimagining the Street as the Heart of the City William Riggs, University of San Francisco “Over the past half century, many of our streets have been transformed into vehicle sewers, built and rebuilt around the sole criteria of moving cars and trucks as quickly as possible. This useful book reminds us that streets are for more than just motion: they are the primary social space of our communities, and their design contributes markedly to the growth or decline of our society.” JEFF SPECK, CITY PLANNER AND AUTHOR, WALKABLE CITY
“Streets are the lifelines of our communities and our societies. In William Riggs’s telling, we made a big mistake handing over this critical piece of social infrastructure for moving and storing cars. It’s now time to retake such valuable space not just for walking and biking, but for dining, shopping, living and working, making it part of more vibrant and livable communities.” RICHARD FLORIDA, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO, AUTHOR OF THE RISE OF THE CREATIVE CLASS
What is a street? Is it a living ecosystem, a public space, a social space, an economic space or a combination of these? This book offers a unique look at streets as locations that can evolve to support the economic, social, cultural and natural aspects of cities. Using modern urban design examples, it challenges readers to focus not only on the liveability and travel benefits of roads, but on how the power of streets can be harnessed. In so doing, it shapes more dynamic spaces for walking, biking and living, and stimulates urban vitality and community regeneration, encouraging us to make changes in our own communities.

Informed by residents’ accounts of Australian high-rise living, this book shows how legal and physical architectures fuse in ways that jeopardise residents’ experience of home and stigmatise renters. As cities sprawl skywards and private renting expands, this compelling geographic analysis of property identifies high-rise development’s overlooked hand in social segregation and urban fragmentation, and raises bold questions about the condominium’s prospects.

In the teeth of climate emergency, hope has to remain possible, because life insists on it. But hope also has to be realistic. Fighting for the future of life is now a tragic necessity and this book argues when enough people make that connection, they also make possible the unprecedented kind of transformation that we need.

Rural Places and Planning Stories from the Global Countryside Menelaos Gkartzios, Newcastle University, Nick Gallent and Mark Scott, University College London “A fresh and stimulating read.”
MICHAEL WOODS, ABERYSTWYTH UNIVERSITY
This book provides a compact analysis, for students and early-career practitioners, of the critical connections between place capitals and the broader ideas and practices of planning, seeded within rural communities. It looks across 12 international cases, examining the values that guide the pursuit of the ‘good countryside’. The book presents rural planning – rooted in imagination and reflecting key values – as being embedded in the life of particular places, dealing with critical challenges across housing, services, economy, natural systems, climate action and community wellbeing in ways that are integrated and recognise broader placemaking needs. It introduces the breadth of the discipline, presenting examples of what planning means and what it can achieve in different rural places.

Community-based Action for Transformative Change Margaret Ledwith, University of Cumbria and Jane Springett, Liverpool John Moores University “Presents a sustained challenge to governments and international organisations which claim to be signed up to people’s participation ... this deeply thoughtful book ... is a very welcome addition to the impressive canon being developed by the authors.” GARY CRAIG, INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
“Participatory research and popular education are key means to uncovering ‘knowledge as if people mattered’. This superb book enriches our understanding of these areas, building on them to create an inclusive – and enticing – world view.” ALEX SCOTT-SAMUEL, UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL
“Provides an interesting and important approach to action research. Well-written and engaging text.” KATE BLACK, UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER
In this second edition of a bestselling book, the authors’ unique, holistic and radical perspective on participatory practice has been updated to reflect advances made in the past decade, the impact of neoliberalism and austerity and the challenges of climate change and the pandemic. Bridging the divide between community development ideas and practice, over half of this innovative book comprises new content with updated features including: • reflection questions; • key points highlighted throughout each chapter; • a glossary of terms. The authors argue that transformative practice begins with everyday stories about people’s lives and that practical theory generated from these narratives is the best way to inform both policy and practice. Consumption and Society Volume 1 | Issue 1 | 2022
Co-Editors: Marlyne Sahakian, University of Geneva, Switzerland, Stefan Wahlen, University of Giessen, Germany and Daniel Welch, University of Manchester, UK “Consumption is an increasingly important part of contemporary life, contributing to the most urgent problems facing the globe - climate destabilization, inequality, and the failures of capitalism. Scholars’ previous paradigms for understanding consumption are increasingly inadequate, as we grapple with profound changes to how people live. This new journal will be an important outlet for the latest theory and research, and will help us to redefine the field.” PROFESSOR JULIET SCHOR, BOSTON COLLEGE, US
We are pleased to announce an exciting addition to the Bristol University Press journals list for 2022: Consumption and Society. This journal will publish high-quality, original peer-reviewed articles that advance understandings of consumption as a societal phenomenon, embedded in, and constitutive of, socioeconomic, material and cultural configurations. The field of consumption studies was an early touchstone for major debates on macrosocial change, especially around the issues of globalisation and aestheticisation. Following in this tradition, Consumption and Society aims to revitalise the relevance of consumption studies for the societal challenges of the 21st century. The journal contributes to debates on contested aspects of consumption, such as environmental impacts, digitalisation, the shifting balance of collective versus private consumption, commodification and inequalities. The journal welcomes theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions to the study of consumption in relation to a wide range of topics, such as: environmental and social sustainability; political and ethical consumption; gender; religion; social movements; food and eating; energy and material resource consumption; mobility; tourism; music; the arts; fashion; embodiment; health; technology, among others. Diverse methodological and theoretical approaches to studying consumption are welcome. Consumption and Society is affiliated with the European Sociological Association’s Research Network on Sociology of Consumption (ESA RN5) and the Sustainable Consumption Research & Action Initiative (SCORAI) Europe, as well as the British Sociological Association’s Consumption Study Group. A key feature of the journal will be to reflect the pluralism of these networks.

Work in the Global Economy is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that promotes understanding of work, and connections to work, in all forms and dimensions. This can mean a focus on labour processes, labour markets, labour organising and labour reproduction. The editors welcome wide-ranging contributions that extend and deepen connections between all aspects of the division of labour: from the production networks that underpin the global economy, to the gendered and racial divides that shape how work is allocated and organised. The launch double issue was published in October 2021 and is available online.
