Detroit Fire Station ARCH 403 2020
The current location for Detroit Fire Engine One is on West Montcalm Street in an old downtown building. The main issues from this fire station is that there is barely enough space for the engines in the apparatus bay and the current living conditions are difficult due to the building’s age. The proposed project would be a new construction building with a focus on sustainability and enriching the lives of the firefighters and local community. The surrounding context is extremely urban and consists of large amounts of concrete. Therefore, there was a heavy emphasis on integrating green space and interactive activities for the local youth. The exterior façade for this structure was designed with Shou Sugi Ban wood to show the beauty that can come from destructive fire. In contrast, the interior was designed cross-laminated timber to offset the dark exterior with a warm and welcoming interior.

Although a fireman’s pole is an iconic staple piece among fire stations, they can be dangerous and cause multiple injuries. It is not uncommon for someone to accidentally fall down the hole or to land incorrectly when using the pole. Another issue with a fireman’s pole is that it allows the diesel fumes from the engines to spread throughout the
building. These concerns are intensified in this construction due to the building being more than two stories. A solution to this problem was to use an enclosed slide. Not only does this help prevent injuries and fumes spreading to the other floors, but it also provides an attraction to the children who come to visit the fire station. Page 9
The structure used for this fire station was cross-laminated timber. The visual appearance of cross-laminated timber was desired, but the materials are also a more sustainable and affordable option. CLT is less costly than steel, concrete, or masonry because it does not require as large as a foundation and is less labor demanding. Page 10

Community Library ARCH 403 2021
Public libraries have been struggling against the battle of becoming obsolete since the start of the 21st century. Although these typologies offer a vast amount of information and knowledge that is beneficial to the community that they serve, younger generations have slowly turned away from physical books. For a library to be successful in an era of technology it must conform to these new demands and offer other services as opposed to only being a storage for books. This new information center would still provide books, but it would also focus on having computer labs for the community, technology that can be easily accessed, private meeting rooms and study rooms to serve a post-covid world, and a focus on children’s entertainment and activity. In order for the information center to stay relevant it is imperative that the building engages the all ages of the population. Often times in society, the performing arts are hardly recognized for their true talent and skill. Usually these programs are over looked, and when schools go through budget cuts, they are typically the first to face the repercussions. This information center would serve to educate the community on the brilliance and beauty of the performing arts. The structure would also provide a location to practice different talents to support and encourage the local youth in the fine arts.

Affordable Housing Duplex CM 230 2020
Urban Light Christian Development Corporation is an organization that serves the local community of Muncie, Indiana. The organization works with community volunteers to find sustainable solutions to the problems that neighborhoods face. Among many services that the association provides, they also focus on rehabilitating houses in the community to provide affordable housing. Ball State University often works with the town of Muncie to better enrich the community. This project was a new construction duplex that Urban Light CDC could use for future housing developments. Architecture students worked along side construction management students to create affordable housing options. A set of construction documents were created so that the organization can easily have the duplex built when needed. A promotion brochure was made with floor plans and renderings so that the organization can easily market the construction to be sold.

Multi-use Apartment Living ARCH 301 2019
Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, this structure serves as a community space on the first floor and living units on the upper floors. The first floor includes an art gallery space, a café, and a community center. The living units were offset from one another to create cantilevers that could be used as an outdoor space. This allowed each unit to have its own outdoor balcony to give a sense of having a backyard. The main green space is located on the northern part of the site to create a connection with the existing green space across the street. Instead of creating a separate green space it was important to design an extension of the existing public area.
