THMP Premiums Soar into Three Figures
by John Woolfolk
Hereford breeders from Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama that chose to participate in the 22nd Annual Fall THMP were rewarded with some of the highest rewards ever for participating in the THMP. This has been the goal since the first sale of trying to find a way to reduce or eliminate those frustrating discounts that are being placed on Hereford calves selling at auctions.

The average weekly price for calves selling across the state, as determined by the USDA Market News, has always been the benchmark to determine the level of success which the marketing efforts are having toward eliminating discounts. The 2020 sale saw every weight group, except one, not only eliminate discounts, but return a premium above the state average price to consignors. Those premiums were topped by the $289.49 per head above market bonus offered for a group of steers weighing an average of 919 lbs and selling to UPI for $1.215 per pound compared to the weekly average of $0.90. Four groups of steers sold for $100 or more over the weekly average and the total steer consignment averaged $100.83 per head premiums.
Heifers were in strong demand as well bringing as much as $165 over market and averaging as a group $87 per head.
I hope that those THA members that are not selling calves through the THMP are finding markets as strong as this one continues to be. HD SEX
