ARCHITECTURE OF ILLUSION An Investigation into Cinematic Architecture Through the Divine Comedy M.ARCH THESIS PROJECT PROGRAM: The Divine Comedy SITE: Camden Town, London, England DATE: Spring 2014 This thesis project departs from Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle by claiming that architecture temporarily supports a passive acceptance of the environment. Architecture has the ability to confront its own crisis of spectacle by offering a different illusion. This thesis project proposes to create an architectural device through which an illusion can occur that aids in altering the perception of reality and counter the illusion of spectacle described by Debord. The illusion to act as a model for this project will be the cinematic illusion. An architecture of cinematic illusion seeks to question how reality can be perceived through a focus on persistence of vision and suspension of disbelief. 6

VEILED NOSTALGIA M.ARCH PROJECT PROGRAM: Helmut Newton Photography Museum SITE: Berlin, Germany DATE: Spring 2013 This project is an investigation into the past of the city of Berlin and the qualities in the photography of Helmut Newton. The final design overlaid figure ground maps of the Kulturforum site in Berlin from before and after WWII to create the form of the photography museum and green roof scape. The qualities from Newton’s photographs were used to shape the spatial experiences of the museum. The green roof scape situated in between the massive extruded concrete perimeter walls acts as an outdoor studio space and mediator between the surrounding context and the museum spaces situated underground.

VOIDING SOLID BS. ADV ARCH PROJECT PROGRAM: Mapping Exploration of Enric Miralles’ Igualada Cemetery SITE: Barcelona, Spain DATE: Spring 2012 Enric Miralles’ existing Igualada Cemetery served as the basis for this exploration. This design studio focused on mapping and deriving form from site conditions. In early exercises the task was to map a transition within the site using various mediums. Out of mapping the transitions between earth and existing walls came the idea to add catacombs to the chapel area of the cemetery as a programmatic element. The final design introduces voids created in an earlier book carving exercise to the site. These voids served as a design model for the light wells of the three catacomb hallways in addition to informing how a sequence of cavernous spaces could be created within the hallways. 30

1.1 The following drawings examine the walls in Igualada Cemetery that were chosen as the transition point to map
32
33
1.2 In this book carving exercise the walls were mapped as lines of voids. The result would lead to the form of the final catacomb design.
34
1.3 Above: The walls were mapped using paper models. Below Left: The walls were cast in plaster. Below Right: The walls were mapped using wire
35
CATACOMB DESIGN 1.4 The following axon and model show the beginning stages of the final design for a catacomb addition to the site. The book carving exercise served as a basis for deriving a form for the catacombs. Three lines of catacombs were added next to the existing chapel.
