This project is focused on the design of a headquarters for the film company, Annapurna Pictures. Located in the historic Fire Proof Storage building in Knoxville, Tennessee, this project incorporated the old 1920’s gridded layout with a new modern intervention that responds to the experimental atmosphere and mission of the film studio. The office space was spread out over five floors and had to provide large conference “war rooms” as well as a large theatre space for movie premieres and showings. The program responded to the large red wave-like intervention that allowed for light to be reflected into the offices. 7

Inspired by the wave like movement that cause Dinoflagellates to illuminate, the wave in the building also serves as a vessel for natural light to enter the building. The facets along the intervention help the sun’s rays pierce into dark corners of the vast concrete structure. The reflection of the light creates moments in the building of intense light and darkness. This allows the occupants to have new experience during every hour of the day.

The L&N Station, while located in the heart of Knoxville, has been made virtually inaccessible by confusing streets and towering highways. It’s location offers the convenience of downtown living and pastime while also being close to green space and nature. In order to make the L&N Station a pinnacle again for Knoxville, one must think of those moving to the city in search of a better life. The refugee and immigrant crisis around the world continues to grow, however what resources do they have when they are able to find safety in a new home? This community center will strive to provide invaluable resources for people of any race in order to make them feel welcome and accepted in our society.

Inspired by precedent studies on the Tonghua Science and Cultural Center in Tonghua, China, this cultural center blends the idea of cutouts with a mixture of materials. The interior atrium with the fiber glass concrete walls brings a heavy feeling to an otherwise spacious entrance while the lace wood panels extending out carrying the pattern past the entrance but create a light and airy feeling to the rest of the space. The center features classrooms, an eatery study space and a dance/athletic studio for the patrons.

Incorporating different areas of STEM study, this Micro School allows for students to fully emerge themselves in a lifestyle of science, engineering and technology. Patterned after the fractal nature of lightening, the tile leads students from one classroom to another. To fully continue this immersive experience, students learn to control technology through coding. The ceiling of the school provides a perfect lab space by allowing students to code its direction and movement. By dropping the ceiling, light is dispersed throughout the environment in the form of telescope robotic arms with vertical tubular lights attached at the end.

After exploring the world of fractals and lightening patterns, using Grasshopper and Rhino allowed for the ceiling pattern and floor tile pattern to come to life for the Micro School. Each tubular light acts as an individual bolt of light that can be customized to allow for proper lighting for the users. The mixture of materials allows for a unique educational experience. The space includes individual desks and study areas, a lab station and a reading nook with movable, comfortable seating for collaboration or individual learning.

LUMINAIRE DESIGN

In order to manipulate light, several variables like form and materiality were toyed around with to create the luminaire. The final iteration uses various materials, like paper, metal wire and 1/8th” thick opaque plastic to give off a dream-like glow. The form of the luminaire was to be organic and wave like to give the light movement and direction. The upward facing direction of the pendant also increases this organic feeling by eluding to flowers and nature.

To begin, the luminaire was layered with only paper and metal as a first iteration to test the ability of the material to disperse light and create the ethereal glow that dances about its curves. As a final iteration, the addition of opaque plastic continued the glow. The material including the metal allows for a modern appearance but the shape and waves allow for the organic flowering presence.

A collection of images curated for the start-up coffee shop in Bristol, TN, Trailblazer Coffee. Working as a Social Media Director, Graphic Designer, and Photographer, in addition to being a barista in the store, I have been able to make a significant impact on the marketing of the business. It has also allowed me to stretch myself and learn new skills along the way.
