P H OT O G R A P HY / D EV E L O P M E NT O F D E S I G N After gathering research and collecting photographs and props that refelcted Edythes story I made a wall display. Originally the display was part of the final outcome but I wanted to extend the brief further and thought the photography could be used as promotional material for the proposed exhibition. I researched into possible venues that would suit the exhibition in terms of space and audience with Leeds gallery being a good option. This was the main promotional poster for the proposed exhibition.
DEVELOPING IDEAS FURTHER
After reflecting on the photographic outcomes and thinking about how I could develop this idea further, bearing in mind the original ISTD brief, I wanted to create a publication that gathered a collection of unsung heroes. This could either be part of the exhibition or a printed version to take away from the exhibition.

The original brief asks for an effective way to celebrate unsung heroes and heroines. My publication was to display and pay tribute to a collection of unsung heroes,. This was some of the primary research I recieved back.. It was interesting to get a range of responses from different people due to age, sex etc.

Design development
D E S I G N D EV E L O P M E NT I thought gathering this research first hand would allow the content to be more effective. As I had already explored with photographs as a visual I wanted to try and create a design that didn’t rely on any photographs. I felt the name of the unsung hero/heroine could play an important part in the aesthetic for the publication. I liked the idea of using a wide range of different typefaces in accordance to the name of the unsung hero/heroine. This desicion was also based on the content of the passage, and what typeface worked best for the individual.
DESIGN DESCISIONS
I thought a really simple visual of the persons hand holding up the note of paper that stated the unsung heroes/heroines name was personal enough as it accompanied the written passage, this was also a way of visualising the unsung hero without the use of photographs.
MOCK UPS AND STOCK TYPES
Originally I had thought the publication would be A5 format on a white thick stock, however these ideas changed as the designing developed and it became a custom size. As the design included no colour I thought it would be nice to have a black card front with Baskerville in white, prominent and suiting the general design of the book. I tried using vinyl to create the type on the front cover, however this was unsucessful as I was using a serif typeface with thin delicate weight and so it proved harder to peel away the vinyl. As an alternative I designed a cover displaying all the names together as I thought this was a good way of collectively voicing all the unsung heroes/heroines of the exhibition.
STOCK, GF SMITH
After printing my first mock up and being pleased with the results I decided to go with a white thick paper that would print the scans to a certain quality. However, problems occured with printing and you could see the ink of the previous page through the current page, making the final execution look careless. After looking at GF Smith samples I decided to order a thin slightly off white matt. After receiving the paper and running a test print to see the quality of ink on image I printed the final copy, adding a sticker to the front cover referencing the exhibition dates and times and using the same typeface as used in the promotional material to keep the design consistent.
