OSCAR WINNERS TO APPEAR AT 49TH CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL CHICAGO - Academy Award winners, Susan Sarandon and Nicolas Cage will appear the the 49th Chicago International Film Festival presented by Cinema/Chicago. Susan Sarandon, who won Best Actress for her role in “Dead Man Walking” (1995), will make her appearance at the film festival’s Opening Night Gala on Oct. 9. Nicolas Cage, who won the 1996 Best Actor Academy Award for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas”, will be present at the Grand Finale on Oct. 23. The Chicago International Film Festival will run Oct. 9-23, 2014. It is the oldest competitive international film festival in North America. This year, more than 1,300 filmmakers applied. In 2013, the festival attracted 52,000 filmgoers. This year’s event will show films from 60 countries, 120 feature films and 60 short films. This also includes nine world premieres, 15 North American premieres, and 34 U. S. premieres. The festival will feature two special screenings: “Elizabethtown” and “The Weather Man”. Tickets for each cost $40. The Opening Gala will feature the U.S. premiere of “Elizabethtown”, starring Susan Sarandon, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, and Alec Baldwin at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the Chicago Theatre at 211 N. State St. Susan Sarandon will arrive on the red carpet to kick off the event and will receive a special career achievement award from the Festival on stage before the screening. The festival’s Grand Finale on Thursday, Oct. 23 will feature the Chicago primiere of “The Weather Man”, starring Cage and Academy Award winner Michael Cain. Cage is set to introduce the film to the audience. The screening will take place at the Harris Theatre for Music and Dance in Millennium Park at 7:30 p.m. Most festival films will be shown at the AMC River East 21 Theatre at 322 E. Illinois St. and Landmark’s Century Centre Cinema at 2828 N. Clark St. Tickets for general screenings cost $15 for the general public and $8 for students with school identification. Tickets may be purchased at theater box offices and select Chicago Barnes & Noble bookstores.
