1. What is your creative idea and how will you make it happen? (up to 100 words) Colour-Ecology explores the possibilities that plants can gives us for pigment and dye use in textile practice. By connecting people with nature, ColourEcology encourages care and nurture for our environment through creative practice. Colour-Ecology is being developed during artist residency at House for an Art Lover (HAL) from July to October 2013 with a final exhibition in November. Over 4 months land in Bellahouston park will be developed into natural dye garden that will become a renewable resource. Workshops will be run to highlight natures potential. Workshops hope to engage young people (textile students) and creative professionals or future collaborators. 2. How will you use IdeasTap to promote your project to the rest of the community? (up to 150 words) The events invitation tool within the IdeasTap account will prove useful to help advertise the events/workshops I am proposing. It will also be valuable to connect with others who are interested in Ecodesign or to begin a network/group that focuses on or is interested in sustainable practice. Ideas Tap will act as an online platform to host the ideas of Colour-Ecology and hopefully inspire other people to be interested in ecologically minded projects. I am also looking for collaborators to be part of developing the project into an organisation, developing a network via Ideas Tap might provide unique connections on a national basis that could not be made otherwise.
3. Will other people and organisations be involved in the project? If so, how? (up to 100 words) The project is supported by HAL by providing a artist studio for creative workshops / events. A stipend of £1000 has been allocated as an artist fee. Arts Trust Scotland have provided the project with £500 in order to purchase equipment to run workshops (dye pots, hot plates, books, seeds). Volunteers will assist with the installation of the garden and people will be invited to free workshops exploring; natural dye techniques, ecodesign, permaculture gardening and collaborative making. Glasgow City Council's Land and Environmental service have approved the use of space in Bellahouston park and provided space to nurture seedlings. 4. After the project is finished what happens next? (up to 100 words) Once the garden is installed it will be maintained and added to over time, providing a permanent legacy for the possibilities of natural dyes. By running workshops and inviting the public to participate, Colour-Ecology hopes to find collaborators for the future in order to develop into an organisation providing sustainable and ecological art/design education. By developing these ideas in a local supported environment, the project hopes to get a grounding in its ideals in order to be involved in a wider creative community in the future. 5. Please summarise how your project will work, the start and finish dates, key milestones and the budget (up to 200 words) July – Implementation / Foraging Colour-Ecology takes residence at HAL(from July 1st). The design for the garden is developed and then implemented. One weekend each month workshops are run and participants are invited to plant species into the garden and forage for native plants to design from. August - Development Workshop participants are invited to develop their patterns/designs. September – Sampling Participants learn some basic knitting machine techniques in order to visualise their designs. October – Harvesting / Making Plants are harvested and used to dye fabric/yarn which will create knitted fabric (60cm x 10m) utilising designs that have been developed over the residency/workshops.
November Project outcomes are exhibited for one week in the Dovecote at the Heritage Centre at HAL. The budget details essential materials for the workshops to take place. These materials will also become part of the communally made knitted fabric. While some plants have been grown from seed, purchasing some ready grown plants will be essential at this stage in the season, so as participants can fully understand the diversity of garden plants. Printed media will be necessary to promote the events and will also enable the project to promote Ideas Tap.
