Dear friends,
Welcome
to our very first digital ASID OC Design Magazine!! After months or even years of thinking whether or not we should go digital, we finally did it! We are saving trees, reducing waste, making less clutter in your office or home, and in general more environmental and user friendly now. The magazine is accessible to you through
President’s Letter
your email, ASID OC website and our Social Media at any time of night or day, from wherever you are! I know, some of you may have been used to the print version, but before you know it, you are used to this new format! Trust me! Change is good. Breaking habits and challenging yourself to embrace change and unfamiliarity is an act of bravery.

I was recently reading a book by Mel Robbins, called The 5 Second Rule. It teaches you a very simple rule to transform your life, work, and confidence with everyday courage. The golden rule is when you have that great idea, don’t let fear, laziness or lack of confidence stop you. When you are at a meeting with something awesome to present but have a fear of rejection, if you have a gym membership that you never use, if you meet the potential Mr. or Mrs. Right but doubt yourself to be good enough for them, or when you hear about a great opportunity to be a part of an ASID OC committee or take a leadership position but think you’re too busy to get involved; simply countdown..5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and get up and do it!!
Communications Director Kathy Booker, ASID 949-412-9714
Sometimes all we need is a little push, mostly from ourselves, to be the person we always dream of being!
Membership@caoc.asid.org
I hope we all have that determination in us, to push ourselves, on a daily basis, to be stronger, more confident, kinder, more peaceful, braver, and more creative. The rest will just follow! And sometimes a little push from others will also do wonders! I “push” you that on April 19th, leave everything you planned for in the afternoon, get in your car, and show up at the ASID OC Design Expo! You will not regret it! Cheers to you all,

The words
President Elect’s Letter
‘e xc i t e d , elevated and enlightened’ inspire me to compose my first letter as President Elect of our chapter. As a member since 1999 as a student, then as design practitioner, I have always felt this way about the benefits of attending, participating and volunteering in our yearly chapter meetings and events, while sharing time with like-minded fellow members for personal and professional growth.
My hope is that our chapter continues to excite, elevate and enlighten both new members and continuing members about our over 26,000 national membership of design practitioners, emerging professionals, students, educators and industry partners. This is a great reason to want to be a part of this long standing professional organization deeply rooted in an ever expanding design industry. Belonging to ASID is current and relevant. Your individual brand can become something bigger than yourself.

We are in full swing of the new term since October 2017 with our current President’s new chapter strategic plan! Each year, our members are encouraged to volunteer as chairpersons to assist our one year term President and two year term Board of Directors. Their role is to help create awareness of things relevant in the design industry, both residential and commercial, with importance on continuing education, safety and building codes, code of ethics, wellness and sustainable products and services. I encourage everyone to volunteer this term and into the following term, and by doing so you can eventually become eligible for nomination to the Board.

We were truly honored to have such a notable group of Designers and Educators judging the design projects remotely from the comfort of their home, project or travel. We kept their identities secret till the final reveal at our Gala/Design Awards Dinner. Judges were also not privy to the fellow judges who generously gave their time and expertise to participate in the process anonymously. Our judges were from across the United states and local to Orange county, too. Linda Tom, Allied ASID ASID OC Design Awards 2017 Chair

2017 GALA American Society of Interior Designers, California Orange County
It was the perfect evening
at the “Copacabana.” The brilliant sun was setting over the tranquil waters. The crowd was being serenaded by Ernesto, a jazz guitarist playing Brazilian Latin music. (He performed “The girl from Ipanema” flawlessly.) Artfully crafted cocktails and butler passed hors’d’oevures started the evening. Welcome to this year’s Gala and the exciting Copacabana theme! The crowd gathered along the waterfront patio to enjoy the festivities. Decked out in black-tie garb, the ladies sashayed around in their bold, colorful gowns while the men dressed to the nines, mingled about. Everyone was set on having a fabulous time and making great memories. The Copacabana girl charmed all with her brightly colored “Rio” inspired costume - feathers, headdress and all! The evening gained excitement and suspense as the celebrity judges were discovered - Laura Kirar, Barclay Butera, Kelli Ellis and Farida Gabdrakhmanova. When the dinner bell rang, guests were seated at their tables with bold, tropical centerpieces, gifts (from IP Partner, Fashion Interiors), and yellow canvas bags (from IP Partner, Serena and Lily). Our Gala and Design Awards sponsors were then announced. The Gala’s Diamond Level Sponsor was Hadley Olivia. The Design Awards

Sponsor was Arizona Tile. Arizona Tile provided the stone for the Design Award’s trophies too. They were stunning! All Sponsors were called to the podium to receive special recognition with Appreciation Certificates and photographs. Many heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all our fabulous sponsors who made this evening happen. We sincerely thank and appreciate each and everyone of you! A special thank you to our sponsors that provided professional services for the Gala: Steve Huang for a/v services, Rosanne Nitti of Pura Vida Photography for photography, and our media sponsor Orange Coast Magazine. Meanwhile, our delicious dinner made by the Balboa Bay Club’s highly acclaimed chefs was being formally served. Outgoing President, Adriel Cogdal, seized on this moment to make her way to the podium. Looking radiant in her
29
bright red gown, she spoke with enthusiasm about her tenure as president during the past year. She cleverly likened it to a boat sailing on the open seas. There were planned courses, sunny days, clear sailing‌.and stormy days, getting blown off course, etc. Her speech was entertaining and insightful to the inner workings of the various jobs/tasks she had at hand. Adriel then presented Miko Krisvoy with the Member of the Year Award. Adriel introduced incoming President, Nazgol Seyedi, who gave a speech about her interests and goals for the Chapter. She looked stunning in her chartreuse gown. Nazgol introduced the new President-Elect and board members. The Design Awards were then presented to the winning designers. (See Design Awards article for the winning designs.
An enchanting dessert of blueberry compote finished the meal, while the Silent Auction winners were announced. Many thanks to our sponsors for donating to our Silent Auction. On my behalf, I thank Nazgol Seyedi for the opportunity to chair this most prestigious event. I enjoyed meeting new friends and putting together this beautiful event for everyone who attended. I have wonderful memories of this special occasion and hope all of you do too. That was one fun night at the Copacabana! Suzanne Ceavatta, Associate ASID ASID OC Gala 2017 Chair

HOLIDAY LUNCHEON
Monark
On December 22, 2017, ASID held their Holiday Luncheon at Monark Premium Appliances in Costa Mesa, in conjunction with Dacor, the sponsor for this event. Monark’s beautifully decorated showroom, hosted a delicious lunch by the caterer, Crème de la Crème, and a photo op could be had with Santa, and his elf, next to one of several Christmas trees. If you were not one of the the 93, or so, members in attendance, you missed out on seeing this wonderful showroom, meeting the staff and learning about Dacor and their new products. But you can still visit them at Monark Premium Appliances, 333 Bristol St, South Coast Plaza, next to Nordstrom’s, Costa Mesa, CA 92626 . In addition, a charity was represented, and had a small display, on how they support children in rural Kenya with schooling, meals and clothes, with a target for this meeting, supplying shoes to the children who attend this school and the surrounding area. Over $476 was raised on December 22. The campaign is ongoing, so if you’d like to donate, go to w

Touring their fabulous rug and carpet showroom and sitting down to a pasta feast in the “Trade Only” private section of the showroom we learned all about crystal and its uses in lighting from traditional styled chandeliers to sleek modern designs sure to delight clients of any taste. Stark provided an exciting end to evening with a raffle of Coffee Table books and several extremely generous Gift Certificates for Stark Merchandise!
Dine For ASID
We kicked 2018 off with our Dine for ASID event, on held on January 10th at Memphis Café in Costa Mesa. Approximately 20 ASID members, friends and family came to enjoy a wide range of amazing southern food. This event was a great success for both Memphis Café and ASID-OC, with over $900 in sales at the restaurant, which created a donation of $181 the chapter. By hosting a Dine for ASID event, restaurants are exposed to new customers and remind former ones to come in for some wonderful food. A portion of the events proceeds are then donated to ASID-OC. It’s a winwin for everyone! Look for more Dine for ASID events this year and be sure to bring your friends and family.

St ud en tC or ne r My name is Megan Pulfer, and I’m currently a student at Interior Designers Institute (IDI) as well as the ASID Student Chapter President at IDI. I started attending IDI in the summer of 2015 and became President of the Student Chapter this past October. My wonderful student board and I started our year with a main objective in mind: to encourage students to get out from behind their drafting tables and computer screens and engage in the design community. Our fall term was themed Customization. How do we get students to think custom instead of simply selecting design pieces from a catalog… or worse, Pinterest? Well, we brought in the experts. Surreal System’s Matt Bernath, Audio/Video & Automation guru, taught us about the incredible options for customizing home theatres and incorporating technology within the home. Morgan Hart of Hart’s Rugs & Carpet, walked us through the steps of ordering a custom imported rug and included a crash course in textile fibers and maintenance. Our final event of the term, we were thrilled to orchestrate and host a student event with Alexandra Page, the Student Representative to the ASID OC Board. Lacava’s Regional Sales Manager, Patrick Weidl, came all the way from Chicago to introduce us to Lacava’s line of sophisticated bathroom fixtures and accessories and their options for customization. By the end of the term, we had formed new relationships with these vendors and were inspired to dream of endless custom design possibilities. For the winter term, we focused on building a design community on campus, and fostering relationships amongst fellow students. We will all be professionals in the design industry one day, and may need to call upon one another for support, projects, etc. To inform fellow students of upcoming chapter events, introduce new students, and catch up with existing classmates, we hosted a pizza party, and held a student mentorship meet-up. The mentorship opportunity will allow new students to pair with an advanced AA or BA student to help answer questions they may have about school or the industry. For our upcoming Spring/Summer term, we will focus on continued education and the certification process for NCIDQ & LEED. We will also take a look at how to keep current on design industry trends, events, and discussions.
