Chairman of the Board Message

Driving the Mission Forward I am pleased to present the The Summit’s Annual Report for the 2015-16 year, and what a spectacular year it was! • We opened with record enrollment in the Upper School. • We finished the building renovations on schedule and were able to open on time: seven new Upper School and one new Middle School science labs, a one-of-its-kind independent study science lab, a five-story addition with new classrooms, a library reading room and art studio. The renovation program also included remediation of the old plaster ceilings in the east and west wings of the main building and an update of the HVAC system. • We had fun celebrating the 125th anniversary with the proclamation read by the mayor on the front steps; Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr celebrating Homecoming Mass; the iconic photograph of the students, faculty and staff spelling out 125 on Williams Field; the hugely successful Knight of Stars Gala which, in combination with the online auction, raised a significant amount for our school; the updating of the history of our school, chapel book, relics book and the Lower School’s S is for Summit book; as well as the glorious Campus Day we enjoyed with Bishop Joseph R. Binzer celebrating Mass. • We successfully closed the Aiming Higher campaign and exceeded the goal by raising more than $20 million. • We won two state championships with boys and girls soccer, sent several athletes to compete individually at state tournaments and had both boys and girls Lacrosse teams going to the state tournament. • We received excellent results from the triennial stakeholder survey. All the projects that we implemented on the strategic plan appeared to increase the satisfaction of the parents and the students. • We started the IGknight program for children ages birth to 24 months with three full sections each trimester of that program. Admission reports that many new enrollees in our Montessori program are coming from

folks involved in the IGknight program who did not know us prior to participating in it. The dedicated teachers, coaches and administrators who work at the school were able to accomplish these things because of the strong support they receive from parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni and friends of the school. Tuition does not cover the full cost of the personalized education The Summit offers. Gifts to the Annual Fund are critical in providing the extras that tuition does not cover. These extras are an integral part of what our students and parents appreciate and help attract new students to our school every year. The Annual Fund helps provide professional development for teachers and coaches so they know and follow best practices in their area of responsibility and are energized in their ministry to children. It helps fund technology – computers, smartboards and instructional software – that enrich the classroom experience. The Annual Fund also provides sports equipment to ensure the athletes have the safest, most up-to-date equipment available. It also provides scholarships for those children who are worthy of a Summit education but do not have the financial means to afford the top-tier, independent school education we offer. The Angel Donor program is also a part of the Annual Fund, and I am quite pleased to report that the number of angel donors has grown from 47 last year to 74. Through this program, donors commit $2,500 or more a year to help fund a portion of a child’s tuition for four to five years. This program bridges the gap for many students who would not otherwise be able to experience the many benefits of a Summit education. I am grateful to see so many answer Christ’s call to help those less fortunate than themselves. Total annual giving (excluding the auction) was $1.2 million, up 6 percent versus a year ago. This is a fantastic result and reinforces the culture of philanthropy we are trying to build within the Summit community. Our trustees led the way with an average gift of $12,900. I am most

grateful for their strong leadership in the boardroom as well as in their financial support of the school. Membership in the Leaders of Character Society (those who give $1,000+) grew to 229 from 200 a year ago. My thanks go out to Development Director Jim Jackson and Assistant Director in charge of the Annual Fund Michele Duda for their leadership, as well as the entire Development Office staff who work so hard to interpret the school for our donors and carefully steward each gift.

I also want to congratulate auction co-chairs, Tricia Headley and Lisa McSwain, for leading the way to a highly successful auction. Special thanks to Lisa Nicholson who so expertly served as auction coordinator. These wonderful results were boosted by the success of the live auction at the 125th gala, which was brilliantly co-chaired by Deb Schaefer and Beth Shaw. In addition to raising a lot of money, this fabulous event brought our community together in a very special way to celebrate a very special year. My sincere thanks to all! Our school continues to be blessed in so many ways. We give thanks for everyone in our community who come together in volunteering their time, talent and treasure to help the children we serve grow in grace and wisdom. The rigor of our academics, the focus on faith formation and the development of character are a unique, best-incity combination of benefits provided at The Summit. ENDOWED FUNDS  A Lasting Impact

Through Endowed Funds, you can make a difference today, tomorrow and in perpetuity. Establishing endowed funds provides benefactors the opportunity to underwrite important programs, student scholarships, faculty development, character education and campus beautification. Endowed funds also provide naming opportunities to honor family and friends. Through the legacy of endowed scholarships, generations of Summit students will be afforded the opportunity to pursue their dreams at The Summit Country Day School. Our endowment is a permanent self-sustaining source of funding. The objective of establishing an Endowed Fund is to grow the fund until it reaches a minimum endowed level. Once the fund reaches this level, it supports the designated purpose in perpetuity of the school. While the Annual Fund supports The Summit’s immediate needs and provides for daily operations in the current fiscal year, endowment gifts are a key component to strengthen and secure the future success and financial stability of The Summit Country Day School.

The Summit Parents Association (SPA) is charged with the mission of bringing families, faculty, staff and students together in a way that enhances the educational and spiritual experience for our children and promotes the mission of The Summit. It is our goal to engage the parent community by providing avenues for parents to become involved with the school by volunteering in the classroom, serving as a room parent, planning a parent get together or serving on the SPA Board. We are committed to providing a warm and welcoming community for all involved at The Summit. This year the SPA was proud to partner and plan with school leadership several events celebrating our school’s 125th anniversary. We kicked off the year by distributing commemorative t-shirts to all students, faculty and staff that they wore in a photo in which they stood in a 125 formation on Williams Field. During Homecoming weekend at our annual Fall Festival, we introduced a brand new Summit Knight mascot to the community. In January, we partnered with admissions to bring pediatrician and best-selling author, Dr. Meg Meeker, to speak to our community during Catholic Schools Week. And in February, we planned A Knight of Stars Gala that celebrated the Summit’s 125th Anniversary. A Knight of Stars was held on Feb. 20 in lieu of the SPA’s annual spring dinner. The parents association partnered with Kelley Schiess, Assistant Head of School for Enrollment Management and Special Projects, and Lisa Nicholson, auction coordinator, to plan a most elegant evening that included dinner, dancing and a very successful live auction. SPA gala chair Deb Schaefer and co-chair Beth Shaw planned what would be dubbed, “The Party of the Century.” More than 500 Summit parents, faculty, staff and alumni gathered at Music Hall to toast The Summit’s 125 years of educating leaders of character. In addition to celebrating our school’s impressive anniversary, the SPA spearheaded a number of other important events. A major highlight once again this year was the second annual 20

Christmas Collection. This year, our parent participation doubled and we were able to raise over $35,000 that was distributed among all faculty and staff. The faculty and staff were once again overwhelmed and touched by our generosity. We look forward to continuing to grow this amazing Christmas tradition over the years. Primary funding for SPA programs and activities comes from the Kroger Community Rewards Program, Amazon Smile and the Uniform Resale Shop. It is our goal to make every event we plan budget neutral so we do not need to rely on parents for additional funding. We thank you for shopping in the Uniform Resale Shop and participating in the Kroger Rewards and Amazon Smile programs. Your support gives the SPA the ability to plan events that enhance our children’s education. Here is a short list of some of the events the SPA participates in: Fall Festival, Caring Committee, Hands Across the Water, Library Legacy, Unity Day, Halloween Dance, Faculty/Staff Appreciation, Birthday Books, Lower School Fun Day, Mardi Gras and Helping Hands. These events would not be possible without parent volunteers and a dedicated board who donate a large portion of their time. The Summit Boosters Association Annual Report

The Summit Boosters Association advances the athletic development pillar of The Summit’s mission through financial support and volunteer activities.

The Summit Boosters manage youth Association  athletics for kindergarten Boosters through sixth grade. Parents volunteer as coaches, team coordinators and a multitude of other support roles. All Annual Report eligible K-6 students have the opportunity to participate in every team sport offered, and every participating student plays in every contest. Sportsmanship, teamwork and skill development are emphasized as students have fun. Players, coaches and parents are asked to sign a code of conduct.

Boosters also provide supplementary support for athletic teams and help improve facilities. During the 201516 year, the Boosters Association made the following purchases and donations: • Fieldhouse Lockers: A gift of $32,000 provided new lockers in the boys’ and girls’ home team locker rooms in the Williams Field fieldhouse. • Baseball Team: A $318 donation provided lunch for the baseball team during their spring training tournament in Orlando. • Angel Donors: A donation $2,000 outright and another $250 from sponsorship at the Drive for the Knights Golf Tournament were given to the Angel Donor fund. A part of the Annual Fund for Excellence, the Angel Donor fund assists the education of students who have the potential and the desire to attend The Summit but are in need of financial assistance. Membership fees are the main source of Booster funding and membership is open to all Summit families through three levels of membership. A Silver Knight membership for $500 includes a pass for the immediate family to all home games, a promotional gift, lunch with Athletic Director Greg Dennis, one Miami Valley Conference away

game pass and a choice of sports decals. Silver Knight members can direct their $250 membership to a particular sport or sports. A Blue Knight membership for $150 includes a pass for the immediate family to all home games and a choice of sports decals. A $75 membership includes an individual pass to all home games and a choice of sports decals. Summary of Financial Operations 2015-16 The past school year was in line with expectations with regard to financial operations. We balanced the operating budget requiring a 4.1% draw from the endowment, in line with our 4.25% benchmark. We took the draw from the endowment throughout the year and conservatively drew a bit more than what we ended up actually needing. Fundraising was strong again this year as we finished up the Aiming Higher campaign. One of our goals in that campaign was to increase the Annual Fund to over $1 million per year. We achieved that goal and expanded our outreach to grow the annual fund this year even more. We also had a very successful auction which this year included a live auction at the 125th Anniversary Gala in addition to our usual online auction. We are grateful to all the volunteers in the Summit Parents Association as well as volunteers dedicated to the auction for boosting net revenue for that event this year. Our operating costs were up a bit this year as planned in the budget. This was due to two factors. We continue to boost teacher salaries more than inflation. The research in education is clear that nothing is more important to student learning than the professional expertise of the teacher. They are our most important asset, and it’s important that they receive a living wage and we continue to attract the best teachers in the city. We also added a curriculum and instruction director as well as an assistant Upper School director to our staff. The curriculum and instruction director addition responded to one of the recommendations in our accrediting process. The Visiting Team felt that a large school like this (in the firmament of independent schools we’re considered a large school) could benefit from someone looking closely at curricular alignment across divisions. We also have an objective to continue to innovate in our curriculum, which requires strong leadership in the professional development of our teachers. The children in the school today learn differently than they did 20 years ago. It’s important that our teachers continue to explore different ways to engage them in the work. We added the assistant Upper School director position given the growth and size of the Upper School today. Both of these hires are working out great! Capital expenditures are down from last year but still higher than normal as we continue to complete the ceiling renovation and install the new HVAC system in the main building. While the beauty and landmark quality of our main building is treasured by all, we have to maintain it to keep it functioning in an optimal way for the benefit of the children we serve today and long into the future.

Operating Cash Receipts

The market value of the endowment dropped about 1%. Our debt rose $1.2 million as a result of the ceiling and HVAC renovations we have undertaken. Relative to most independent schools, our debt level is quite low. While we could pay it off using unrestricted endowment funds, the Board of Trustees believes it’s smarter to keep the cash in the market given the cost of our debt is very low. That strategy has proven successful over the last five years. The Lord continues to bless our school in so many ways: •

Our students benefit from a highly skilled teacher corps who are dedicated to the mission and to the children they serve. The longevity of our faculty testifies to this dedication, and the students benefit from their long experience.

The hardworking staff supporting our teachers allows the school to run smoothly, even though our staffing levels are below that of comparatively sized independent schools. Our daily objective is to run the school effectively and efficiently in order to maximize tuition dollars going toward what happens in the classroom between teachers and learners.

We are most grateful for the strong volunteer support we enjoy from parents, alumni and friends of the school. Our tuition levels would be a lot higher were it not for these folks stepping up to help in the divisions, the Spirit Shop, SPA activities, coaching, in the concession booth and on and on. The Summit community is a strong one. That sense of community is everywhere one looks.

While we focus on developing leaders of character among our students, there are plenty of leaders helping us be a great independent school. The Board of Trustees are conscientious and tireless in their oversight and providing their expertise. The same thing goes for the Foundation Board, Alumni Board, Booster Board and other groups/ committees which help us be the best school we can be.

We are blessed by the generosity of our stakeholders. We are the only Catholic school in Cincinnati that is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. That speaks to the recognized quality of our program. Our donors recognize the important role we play in Cincinnati and are committed to sustaining our excellence long into the future.

The Sisters started it all 125 years ago. We are now called to extend their legacy and carry forward the mission of the school into the future.
