the Slot
The Slot provides an extensive view into California’s celebrated wine-making process within an urban context. Often reserved for pastoral landscapes, the program instead is located in the heart of Oakland across from charming Lake Merritt. The winery captures the dynamic population to reveal captivating views of the flow of wine production. The site attracts passing pedestrians by offering a glimpse into the fermentation vaults and entices passers to visit for a glass of local wine and tasty food. The ground floor holds a tasting room and double-height wall featuring wine bottles for purchase. Stepping up to the second floor, a restaurant and private event space provide decadent views of Lake Merritt. Each program is coupled with outdoor rooftop space situated along the edge of a rooftop meadow – helping to insulate the fermentation vaults below while incorporating the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The top level provides office space for the winery’s staff members and has additional desks available for rent to local businesses. The public areas employ a fully operable façade system, allowing the space to open up to the outdoors and embrace natural ventilation throughout. Visitors are also able to schedule a tour of the comprehensive winemaking process starting from the crushing deck, moving through the production zones, observing the final bottling process, and ending with a glass of wine on the rooftop. 02 Coliseum Landing Tower Riding the upcoming wave of development in the Oakland Coliseum BART Station region, the Coliseum Landing Tower serves as a gateway into Oakland. It is a placemaking catalyst that creates a lively place for residents, workers, and Bay Area visitors alike. The development directly responds to the housing, food security, sustainability, and market needs of the community through a unique combination of both transit and food-oriented development. The project introduces a large variety of residential units, retail businesses, and community development partners augmented by ample outdoor public space. The 12-story mixed-use tower boasts innovative construction techniques through the implementation of a cross-laminated timber (CLT) frame over a concrete podium. The ground level features a YMCA, cafe, and diner. The tower above provides structured parking, a six-story hotel, and four stories of office space providing Class A space and co-working areas along with reduced rate spaces for non-profit tenants. Outdoor terraces articulate the facade and promote dynamic encounters throughout the tower. The business hotel offers incomparable amenities in terms of transit, retail, and dining. Inscriptions of Security
El Alamein, Egypt is a World War II battleground that has tormented natives of the landscape for decades. Since the battle, there have been over 8,000 civilian causalities caused by detonated landmines concealed by the desert. This encumbers individuals - haunting them with maimed appendages and the inability to participate in customary practices. The nomadic Bedouin population has existed in a realm of negotiable refuge for ages, but now they are deprived of fluid movement across their homelands. An architectural ecosystem seeks to return whimsical migration patterns to the population, bridging the gap between volatile territories and a sense of security. Through an ecology of biomechanical devices – as an extension of the Bedouin culture – the precarious site will attempt to recapture a sense of refuge. Various species will operate along a spectrum of physical and psychological roles while embedding the territory with tangible inscriptions of security. Euphoric Ascent
Offering an introspective haven from the digital realm, “Euphoric Ascent” immerses guests in an atmosphere of contemplative reflection and selfawareness. Rather than policing technology usage, the retreat produces compelling spaces that disintegrate the allure of technology. The Biophilia Hypothesis - a theory that observes humans’ innate desire to affiliate with other life forms - is spatially and programmatically embedded in the project: The façade is composed of transparent and opaque panels that produce sweeping rhythms of light and thermal energy; baths of various temperatures create a rich atmosphere engaging visual, acoustic and tactile senses; and elevated tree houses, draped with vegetation, are scattered amidst foliage. Ascending these tree houses brings one further away from mundane distractions, emphasizing the retreat’s ultimate ambition: to realize and make momentous connections with the surrounding environment in one’s daily routine. Promised Land Air
‘Promised Air’ is one of twelve projects contributing to “The Architectural Imagination” - the United States exhibition for the 2016 Venice Biennale. Promised Land Air is situated in Detroit’s Mexicantown neighborhood but presents widespread applications for cities across the world. The speculative design proposal seeks to house and employ over 900 displaced families from the Delray neighborhood due to the construction of the Gordie Howe Bridge for international trade. The project also incorporates green air filtration strategies to remediate air pollution caused by industries and diesel pollution. As a team member of A(n) Office, I was able to assist and lead various stages of the project. The journey began with a detailed analysis of the site through photographs, intensive research, and interviews with members of the community. I helped manage the production of both the physical and digital model and assisted with massing studies, final representational techniques, and portions of the exhibition’s final drawings. 2016 VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE FIRM: A(N) OFFICE EXHIBITION: U.S. PAVILION “THE ARCHITECTURAL IMAGINATION” LOCATION: DETROIT, MI

Napa Pendry
Napa Pendry is an adaptive reuse project situated on a site that once operated as a United States Post Office. Unfortunately, the building experienced great damage during an earthquake in 2014. The project seeks to celebrate as many historic features of the building as possible and will undergo a comprehensive retrofitting process. I worked primarily on the design development phase. In addition to Revit modeling and coordination, I also participated in the production of a Certificate of Appropriateness review package. This informed me about the importance of verbal and graphic communication in the profession when working with a wide array of people. the Hoxton
Hoxton Chicago is a boutique hotel located in Chicago’s Fulton Market District. During my time on the project, I worked on many facets of the building. A primary item I collaborated on included the interior fit outs for a rotating retail space and wellness room. The retail program focuses on creating a space consistent with the Hoxton brand that has clean and efficient display opportunities for pop-up venders. The wellness room offers a tranquil space for a variety of group fitness sessions and opportunities to decompress. I primarily worked on the construction documents phase and had the opportunity to coordinate closely with the engineering and interiors team in addition to several other consultants. CA Flight Ship
During the year 2060, the Whiplash Effect has thrown California into a state of constant flux - hurtling between extreme wet and dry periods. Catastrophic flooding results in dam failures quickly followed by periods of drought and horrific wildfires. As this creates a harder, more complex landscape to survive within, CA Flight Ships are constructed. During periods of climate neutrality, flight ships crawl in nomadic migration patterns. They survey the land for hot spots to eliminate the spread of forest fires and slash ditches into hillsides to prevent mudslides. The ships function as a refuge during extreme ends of the spectrum, housing up to 6,500 passengers. When such crises arise the ships accept citizens in the most dire situations. The ships are equipped with sufficient supplies to support the inhabitants. Residential pods are provided for occupants in addition to several hybrid amenity spaces that combine monolithic water tanks with public spaces such as medical centers, cafe eateries, a gym, theater, integrated pool and several lounge spaces. As time passes people begin to think of the CA Flight Ship as their second home. FALL 2018 ARCH 201: STUDIO CRITIC: NICOLAS DE MONCHEUX UC BERKELEY

High Grounds: An Emergent
As cities become increasingly more dense and chaotic, there is a necessity to simultaneously produce spaces that offer a departure from these unhealthy exposures. The ultimate desire is to replace banal, everyday moments with the sublime by inserting meaning in urban dwellers’ daily life. The project seeks to create unique atmospheric conditions that jostle people from their monotonous routines. A collection of six roof islands have been designed as a testing ground for the urban sky strata. The interventions elucidate the major effects and ethos of the system at large, particularly in their ability to introduce sensory moments into the public realm. Furthermore, each roof island seeks to merge quotidian routines with spectacular encounters and is inspired by an iconic piece of contemporary art that embodies phenomenological qualities. One simple yet essential goal of High Grounds has remained constant: to provide moments of contemplation in people’s everyday lives. Through the design of these six strange and uncanny landscapes, we see the potential to expand and multiply across San Francisco’s rooftop level in addition to many alternative urban environments. As a result, city dwellers are provided numerous opportunities to sprinkle their daily routine with whimsical moments in the clouds. Mist Island ADDRESS: 400 California St. ELEVATION: 5th level HOURS OF OPERATION: 24 hours PROGRAM: eatery + herb gardens NATURAL FORCE: fog NATURAL PHENOMENA: rainbows ARTIFICIAL FORCE: electricity ARTIFICIAL PHENOMENA: mist
Mist Island is a response to the natural condition of fog. The concept is inspired by the ephemeral qualities of Olafur Eliasson’s “Fog Assembly.” The space heightens one’s consciousness over their body and produces the opportunity to, as Eliasson says, “feel yourself sensing”. Throughout the day, the roof employs a fog catcher to capture and store heavy morning fog. The mist network then emits an additional layer of clouds episodically throughout the day. Renders: (top right) The power of something so transparent and ephemeral is its ability to erase the boundary. The line is blurred between the built environment below and the natural sky above.
(bottom right) The ultimate sensorial experience ensues when rainbows materialize just overhead. This is a result of a powerful trio – the sun, mist, and reflective nozzles at play.
