The Community Connects Through Giving

A hyperlocal gift-giving economy is at your ﬁngertips in The Hills. The Buy Nothing Project, an initiative that seeks to reduce landﬁll, also holds the power to connect locals through random acts of generosity.

Going beyond the limitations of an online thrift shop, the initiative’s premise is simple: use the group to ‘gift’ items to your neighbours or alternatively, ask group members for something you want or need. The catch: no money can exchange hands and one item cannot be traded for another. It must be given away—gifted—for free. This sustainability-centred movement originally hatched in the US in 2013 and quickly spread its wings to communities worldwide, including ours. With several Buy Nothing groups popping up in our region, The Hills community can now locally embrace this grassroots movement. What’s more, the vast array of items on offer is simply mind-blowing! Items can range from bunk beds, to bikes, to Bunya nuts (yes, Bunya nuts!) and everything in between. If you’ve recently played witness to the peculiar sight of ladies marching around in pink gumboots, you can very well assume they have come from our local Buy Nothing group. Why on earth? Well, a member recently offered up 350 pairs of gumboots to be gifted, thus cancelling their appointment with the dump! Bethany, a proud co-admin of the Ferny Hills BN page, fervently states, ‘I love seeing how creative people can be with how they reuse items. It is really unexpected sometimes but wonderful that things are getting another life!’ In March 2019, local Ashley Smith started The Hill’s very own Buy Nothing movement. She had heard whispers of the beneﬁts of the Buy Nothing Project and became frustrated that

the only local page available was over in The Gap (founded by Diana). So, taking matters into her own hands, she gave life to one herself- after a little training, of course! Fast as wind, word began to spread, and by December 2019, the group had reached a staggering 1,000 plus members. However, as the group grew, the sense of community became diluted. Despite having a signiﬁcant number of members, there were much fewer participants. It quickly became clear to the admins (people assigned to regulate the page) that they weren’t collectively serving their purpose of ‘giving where you’re living’. ‘We started noticing some niggles that tend to happen in larger groups. More and more people were giving to the ﬁrst

person who commented. This is a Buy Nothing no-no. It makes the gift a transaction and there are plenty of groups and marketplaces where you can have this type of exchange. They were complaining about distances and asking members to state their location so they could choose who to request gifts from,’ Ashley revealed. It wasn’t until January that the admins on the page launched their plan of attack to preserve the true ethos of the Buy Nothing Project. They opted to divide the original “mama” group, which consisted of residents from Arana Hills, Everton Hills, Everton Park, Ferny Hills, Ferny Grove and Bunya into smaller, more hyperlocal groups of no more than two suburbs. From this endeavour, hyperlocal communities sprouted up from the ground and are currently thriving. ‘Through these efforts, we have seen the core values of the movement being retained – human connection and meeting your neighbours,’ Bethany has reported, rejoicing in the success of the Buy Nothing project. Well, a month is a long time between The Hills Echo issues. On the bright side, we have welcomed three new members to our ranks, Kath Sibley, Gary Moore and Veronica Dick. New members are the lifeblood of Community Service organisations, providing more hands to spread the load and a valuable resource for new ideas. As you know, ‘Covid-19’ has changed the world as we know it. Lions catering via Sausage Sizzles, Hot Chips and Donuts at Community Events, Harvey Norman, Bracken Ridge Train Miniature Rides and Bunnings has been suspended until the end of May. Our face to face meetings have also been suspended, with business now being conducted via email and Skype. Adversity brings out the best in most and I believe we will see Australians at their best again - helping those in need while making sure we adhere to the Government’s health requirements at this time. Please remember you can contact your local Lions Club if you need help while conﬁned to home due to Social Distancing or Self Imposed Isolation. As Lions, we will help out where we can. Consolidated Properties Group and CVS Lane Capital Partners have kicked off the new year with the $84.5million acquisition of the Great Western Super Centre in what is the second largest neighbourhood centre sale in the last 12 months. The new buyers are certainly not newcomers to the retail industry, with this purchase increasing the pair’s retail portfolio to approximately $485 million. This includes seven complete shopping hubs under renovation or in the pipeline throughout South East Queensland. This purchase was attractive to the duo due to the shopping centre being located in an established neighbourhood with high growth corridors – there are more than 1,500 new homes planned in the surrounding area. The Arana Hills Library is temporarily closed for a little bit of TLC! Over the next few weeks, our much loved local library is receiving a roof replacement along with refurbishments and is scheduled to re-opened on Monday 18th May (weather permitting and subject to current COVID-19 crisis). Tramway tools are not for the faint hearted! Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed

The Brisbane Tramway museum had intended to tell everyone about their planned Heritage Festival Event in this issue but, as part of Australian Heritage Festival, it has been cancelled this year by the National Trust. Not surprisingly, in light of the current virus. The museum was going to integrate tram rides with rides in a 50 year old BCC bus and tours through our Restoration Workshops. Maybe another time . . In the meantime, normal operations are still going on. Among these, maintaining the ﬂeet of trams is paramount. Passenger (and staff) safety is always at the forefront of everything that the museum does. Keeping 60—100 year old vehicles in safe running order is no small task. Thankfully, the museum has a dedicated and knowledgeable team to carry out this important role.

To ensure that the museum complies with the highest standards, they come under the scrutiny of The Ofﬁce of The National Rail Safety Regulator who sets the standards for maintenance (and other matters). Headed by Chief Mechanic Geoff Hayes—seen under tram # 429 in the photo above —the team checks every tram after the Sunday running, especially any anomalies reported by crew. No matter how insigniﬁcant they may seem, they still get checked. A regular maintenance regimen has been established over the years to ensure all maintenance is carried out on time. Many of the tools the mechanics use are original and are as old as the trams they are designed for. Some of these were hand-crafted by blacksmiths—the designers Chief Mechanic Geoff Hayes hard at work. were not shy about using heavy bolts and nuts back then! Mechanics had to be strong simply to handle the tools. The museum can always use more Electric Fitters, Fitters and Turners and mechanics of all trades. The bees knees of our ecosystem

from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Nadine Shaw is the guest speaker at the scheduled meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club on Thursday, 7th May. She will be talking about the important role bees play in our ecosystem.

The guest speaker is a long-time beekeeper and honey producer as well as an accomplished product, lifestyle and food photographer. Her love of gardens and growing her own fruit and vegetables led her to Northey Street in the mid 1990's where she studied Permaculture Design. This is also where her awareness of bees began to grow. She started with native stingless bees and fell madly in love - one hive quickly became two. She joined the Northside Beekeeping Association and over time, with solid mentoring and new found wisdom, she became a knowledgeable apiarist running up to 24 honeybee hives. Nadine is an advocate for the important role bees play in our ecosystem and takes pride in teaching their vulnerabilities in our modern world. She shares her joy of beekeeping and reveals a little of their world to you, as our survival depends on theirs. This month (April) is a time to observe and remedy anything that's going wrong in our gardens. Keep an eye on Hibiscus. Look for aphids and mites on new growth. Each day pick up and dispose of spent blooms to minimise the effects of the hibiscus beetle. Look for swelling or lumps on citrus tree branches. This could indicate gall wasp attack, in which case the offending branch should be removed before the wasp eggs hatch. Put the cuttings in the garbage bin. Lawns will need attention too, for fungus attack such as dollar spot, lawn grubs and and weed seeds. Towards the end of the month spring, ďŹ&#x201A;owering bulbs should be planted. With all the uncertainty and restrictions generated by COVID-19, the Hills Players are disappointed to announce that they will be postponing their annual Trivia Night.

The event scheduled for 4th April 2020 will be postponed to a later date (yet unconﬁrmed) later in the year. Stay tuned for further information in future editions of The Hills Echo. Unfortunately, for the same reasons, the Hills Players have also had to make the decision to delay the performance of the play ‘Always A Bridesmaid’ that was planned for June 2020. Rehearsals for the comedy, set in America's Southern State of Virginia, had begun in earnest and the cast were really enjoying bringing the characters of Kari, Libby-Ruth, Sedalia, Monette and Deedra to life each week. Until there is more certainty on performance dates - ideally towards the end of the year - play rehearsals are on hold. Here’s to hoping that fears surrounding the COVID-19 have well and truly subsided by then! The Hills Players will be sure to keep you informed. Arana View Club Meetings Postponed Arana VIEW Club will not be holding their regular monthly meetings due to the restrictions placed on everyone as a result of COVID 19.

In May of the same year, through the generous support of local Queensland MP’s, the building arrived at Samford Museum. There was also a tiny waiting shed from Camp Mountain Station incorporated into the Grovely building. This had come about following the closure of the Dayboro line beyond Ferny Grove. In WWII, soldiers based at the Grovely Army Camp in Dawson Parade travelled through the station. Following fund raising to finance the work undertaken by our volunteer members, the building was secure within 18 months. A successful Q150 (Queensland 150 years celebration) grant made it possible to fit out the former Grovely Station building into a War Memories tribute to Service personnel who served in all wars, especially those from Samford and surrounding districts. On the 8th November 2009, this permanent acknowledgement of sacrifice and service was officially opened, just in time for Remembrance Day. This tribute can be viewed during a visit at any time. Numerous files dedicated to Service Personnel and ANZAC related books, eg WW2 in Pine Rivers, can be read when the museum returns to normal opening hours. Samford Museum is closed until after Easter when the situation will be reviewed. Anzac commemorations at the museum have also been cancelled. Stay savvy with your super - sit and wait!

Many people are worried about their superannuation and investments. Logging into accounts and seeing at least 10% gone from their balance in just a couple of weeks is confronting.

For some people, this could be $10,000, $50,000 or even $100,000 or more. This first and most important thing? Don’t panic and make a drastic change. During the Global Financial Crisis, we saw markets fall over 50%. Many superannuation balances fell 20-30% over that time. Those who didn’t panic and left it as is enjoyed significant growth on their investments and superannuation balance over the next 10 plus years. Those who panicked during the GFC and sold their investments or switched to the conservative or cash option, missed out on so much of that recovery. The statistics and data show us that on the whole, those who make changes will be worse off. So, what else can you do? You should review your superannuation or investments and make sure they are low cost. The higher the fees are that are being deducted during this time, the less that remains invested for the eventual recovery. This also extends to your insurance premiums that might be deducted from your superannuation. Perhaps see if you can reduce the cost of your insurances or pay for them directly. You could also look at this from a positive angle. After every market crash comes some form of recovery. You could look to benefit from this. That could mean making additional contributions to your investments or superannuation while the prices are down. When asset prices fall, expected returns increase. This suggests that you will experience even better

growth as we see the recovery. For the bold, look to switch to a more aggressive investment option during this time. Some people might even take this opportunity to start an investment portfolio. This will require access to cash or the ability to secure an investment loan. The benefit will be an investment journey that begins after prices have been discounted. This year is going to be a challenge for many people for various reasons. Most importantly, take care of yourselves and those around you. Try your best to stay healthy. Times will get better and we will revert back to normal life. Keep longer term goals in focus. It’s important to not let the current events distract us from our longer-term financial planning strategies. Samford Swimming Champ Tackles Rottnest

Joep Buijs taking on the Rottnest Channel

Joep Buijs describes setting foot on Western Australia’s Rottnest Island after swimming 19.7km non-stop from the mainland as a rock-star moment.

After swimming for just over 6.5 hours, the 51-year-old Camp Mountain local stood on the sand and was greeted by wild applause from his team, including coach Codie Grimsey, wife Kerry and his two children Jake and Lily. Having grown up a competitive 50 metre breast stroker, the Rottnest Channel Swim was Buijs’ ﬁrst solo marathon swim. While conditions leading up to the February 22nd event had been calm, they soon deteriorated once the swim was underway. ‘The night before and morning of were perfect conditions,’ Buijs reported, then added ‘the wind was in the back and the current was in favour, but after we started, the wind changed and the sea became choppy. It ended up being in the slowest 25 percent of swims they’ve ever had. In hindsight, under these circumstances, I did a good time.’ After battling through the conditions for hours, he could ﬁnally see the island in the distance. This was to be a blessing in disguise. However, seeing the island meant you were still a few

hours away from ﬁnishing. ‘It’s tough mentally,’ he admitted. ‘The last 500m felt like 5km. Everything was sore. He trained in four-week blocks and swam up to 30km a week. Training consisted of pool squad sessions and open water swims on weekends. Buijs said that swimming with like minded, experienced people helped him stay motivated. ‘It makes such a difference to train with swimmers who have done something like that before. It makes it feel like a normal thing to do,’ he joked. The Rottnest swim was intended to serve as a stepping-stone for Buijs to do other world famous ultra-distance swims including the English Channel. Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (damage to the nerves in the limbs) is one of the most common and debilitating complications of diabetes, affecting up to 50% of people living with Type 2 and 20% of Type 1 diabetes. Damage to the longest nerves (those in the limbs) can impair the body’s ability to send messages between the brain, muscles and organs. This can result in symptoms such as pins & needles, numbness, tingling, muscle pain, ‘burning’ (usually in the feet) and poor balance. These symptoms can also make exercise painful and sleep difﬁcult, which can lead to tiredness, weight gain and an increased risk of having a high blood glucose level. Adequate sleep, regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are important strategies for people living with diabetes to remain healthy. When these strategies are interrupted, further complications can arise. The good news is that early diagnosis, medical interventions and healthy steps can help to either avoid or stop the progression of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy. Nerve conduction studies can accurately identify Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy and exclude some other underlying conditions. Regular testing (usually recommended annually) is vitally important to monitor the progress of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy. However, some GP’s may be reluctant to make referrals for nerve conduction testing, due to the high out-of-pocket expense often incurred by patients. Recently, MBRC’s Green Infrastrucure team have been monitoring a number of the Fauna Rope bridges across the region, including the fauna bridges at Collins Road in Everton Hills and the other at Bunya Road in Arana Hills. Over 800 photos have been triggered at these two locations alone between July 2019 and Feb 2020 proving these fauna bridges are receiving a great deal of use by our furry friends! A Moment of Joy at Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre

Recently, the children of this local pre-school centre were lucky enough to witness the glorious moment a staff member fed one of their furry friends- a possum!

As a pair of beady eyes peered out at them from inside the centre’s ‘possum box’, the children quietly watched the timid creature nibble a piece of apple, a raspberry and a blueberry off the twig their teacher offered it. At Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC), time is taken to develop a level of appreciation amongst the children for the ﬂora and fauna they share the space with. The natural environment and its sustainability are strongly valued by the whole staff team, which evidently has a ripple effect on the children they teach and care for. Some children are inherently nature-lovers and are keen to investigate the environment on their own. Others aren’t as much and feel more at ease with an adult close by. Nonetheless, MPC’s staff endeavor to make the most of the plentiful learning opportunities the natural world has to offer. Should they be feeding a wild animal? Is granting the children access to seeing wildlife up close and personal worth the risks? Of course, there are always ethical decisions to make regarding the situation. children’s’ faces as they watched the possum eat the fruit certainly indicated that they felt a connection to the animal. COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic Dear Robin, Why do we do the things we most promise ourselves we won’t do to our children. I feel really awful and a bad mother for behaving the way I do. My husband defends our daughter and says I’m far too harsh on her. I hate to say this but I ﬁnd her irritating. Bobbie is eleven years old and honestly she is a good kid, she does everything asked of her and causes very little trouble. She is always there as mother’s little helper. I might think that I was just one of those women who really doesn’t take to being a mother. I can’t say that because I feel very differently about my son who is no-where near as ingratiatingly willing to please and basically seems to be his own person. That I feel about and behave in the way I do with my children disturbs me. I just hate myself when I hear out of my mouth hurtful words towards my daughter that are nearly identical of those my mother said to me. Sometimes I am able to stop myself, but most of all I do not want to feel this way about my daughter. Dear Jackie, What is really important is that you are aware of what you are doing. to your daughter, is it because her behaviour reminds you of yours as a child. How hard did you try by being a good girl to win your mothers’ approval and love. How did her harsh words effect you? Is the memory of this the reason for your promise to yourself to behave differently. You use words like “ingratiatingly willing to please” – as distinct from your sons’ independence and “sense of his own person”. Does your daughters ‘neediness’ to please remind you of your own futile efforts and that cost to your young sense of personhood? Is a perceived preference toward your son about your own unconscious want for your daughter to be less like you were? Is it a reminder of that, that causes you to retaliate by using mothers words? Maybe you want your daughter to ﬁght back in a way you could not. Without self judgement, allow these ideas and others like it to simmer. The ones that give you a body hit are the ones to take note of. Understanding why we are doing what we are doing is the ﬁrst stage of being able to let go of unwanted behaviours. This is not an uncommon pattern of behaviour, one as a child I personally witnessed with two friends. These two friends were the recipients of similar behaviours and said, each after becoming a mother of two boys; “Well that is it, the cycle’s ended. With two boys I am not in danger of doing what my mother did to me”. Behavioural patterns from our childhood are deeply encoded. They are our models. You have your mother’s model of how to parent a child that behaves as you did. Where you differ is that you are aware of it, are conscious of not giving into it every time and that you do not want this for yourself or your daughter. You also have your husband’s awareness and support in this. Use this. Instead of ‘judgement’ feel compassion for your inner child that was so inappropriately hurt. Through your daughter and the more compassionate understanding of her needs for love and the way she seeks it from you, allow yourself to love and heal the inner child of your childhood. Give to this inner child and your daughter what your mother could not give to you. Discuss all the aspects of this openly and honestly with your husband. He could be a wonderful support in helping you both work out and obtain your desired goals. Robin

Coronavirus Update

I want to update you on what the Government is doing to slow the spread of coronavirus to save lives in Australia. Practicing good hygiene and keeping a healthy physical distance between individuals is our most powerful weapon in ﬁghting this virus and saving lives. The Government has introduced new measures to help stop the spread and will be regularly reviewing these. This information is up to date at the time of writing, 23 March 2020. For the most up to date advice please check www.health. gov.au regularly. In summary, the Government: • Is introducing new measures as of 12pm, 23 March 2020, which will see the closure of all: m Pubs, registered and licenced clubs (excluding bottle shops attached to these venues), hotels (excluding accommodation). m Gyms and indoor sporting venues. m Cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs. m Restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/ or home delivery. m Religious gatherings, places of worship or funerals (in enclosed spaces and other than very small groups and where the 1 person per 4 square metre rule applies). m These measures also apply to outdoor spaces associated with the above venues. m Isolated remote community hubs are not included in these restrictions.

• Is urging everyone to avoid any non-essential travel and to stay in their local community wherever possible. • Has closed the borders as at 9pm 20 March 2020 to all non citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family members (spouses, legal guardians and dependents). • Is requiring all travellers coming from overseas to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival. • Has introduced a level 4 travel ban: Do not travel to any country. • Is urging schools to remain open until the school holidays and for parents to send kids to school, unless sick. This is in accordance with the latest health advice. • Is asking people to continue good hygiene practices and to refrain from handshaking and hugging and practice social distancing wherever possible by remaining 1.5 metres apart. • Has introduced visitation restrictions at aged care facilities. • Is bringing in stimulus packages to help people and businesses survive this crisis. Club closed until the end of April

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club Last month the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club spoke about the various clubs who hold Gem Shows. The shows have a wonderful supply of rocks and gemstones for sale both by the Tailgaters and the dealers. Unfortunately, due to the current situation with crowd gatherings, a lot of these shows will not be going ahead this year. Under the circumstances, the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has also closed their workshop and clubrooms until the end of April for the safety of their members. The situation will be reviewed again at the end of April. However, if you feel this type of hobby interests you, please do not hesitate to get in touch with either John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093. They will be only too happy to have a chat to you about the workings of the club. Of course, when the current situation in the world subsides and things return to normal, feel free to come along and have a look at their facilities. You will be most welcome. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its rooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove. Under normal circumstances, the workshop is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from 12 noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also usually open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm.

The work of government continues

The Queensland Government has taken decisive action to ensure public health risks are minimised and the operations of government agencies and services can continue legally and safely during the rapidly evolving crisis. Local food supply

There is no need to panic buy food or toilet paper. Over 88% of Queensland is agricultural land. We are the largest producer of vegetables in Australia with our farms producing 97 per cent of Australia’s bananas alone. We are the biggest producer of tropical fruits with our fruit basket including pineapple, mango, mandarin, avocado and tomato. Queensland also produces over 50 per cent of Australia’s beef. The Palaszczuk Government has amended the law to allow our supermarkets to restock 24/7 so that all of Queensland’s vast array of amazing food will be available to us when needed.
