Stationery for School Children in Need

Currently, Brisbane North is home to over 215 families—many with multiple children—who are in desperate need of stationery for the 2021 school year’s commencement. However, Stationery Aid, a new local not-for-profit organisation with a vision, plans to help resolve this issue, at least partially.

After identifying the need to collect excess and used school stationery items in order to divert them from landfill, Stationery Aid began their mission to provide at least 100 stationery packs to disadvantaged students and families. These educational resources—inclusive of pens, pencils, staplers, glue, rulers, paints, math equipment, exercise books, etc.—will be sorted, cleaned, renewed, and then donated locally. Stationery Aid is presently conducting a pilot program in Brisbane North with the Hills Collective, Arana Hills—a team of volunteers, lead by AJ Heijns, who dedicate their time to helping our community. This year, the two organisations will measure what they receive and how much they can proudly donate to those in need. A Little Op Shop With A Big Heart

Supporting community is what Picabeen Community Association does best, and their Op Shop in Gilston St, Keperra strives to do the same.

Staffed by a wonderful team of volunteers, the Picabeen Change Room Op Shop is more than a place where you can buy fabulous, affordable, pre-loved clothing and accessories for all ages. Project worker, Gayle Brook, who supports the volunteers, says that the op shop is more like a community hub where regular customers come for a chat, browse for clothes and enjoy some time out from the daily stresses of life. ‘2020 has been a particularly challenging year for so many people who have lost jobs or opportunities to gather with family and friends. Some of our customers come in a few times a week just to sit on our green couch and socialise,’ said Gayle. ‘We have young mums who come in with their toddlers, teenagers looking FOR up-style retro fashions, women of all ages sharing life’s ups and downs, and elderly people enjoying company.’ When needed, the staff at the op shop will refer people to Picabeen Community Centre in Hoben Street, Mitchelton for practical support, such as food hampers, English speaking The official opening of the ANZAC Memorial classes, youth support, or playgroup. Spartan Spirit Shines Bright at Mitchie

Teamwork is centre to the success of The Mitchie Spartans

Rugby at Mitchelton State High School started off back in 2018, introduced by coach Suraj Jayasiriwardena. Suraj has an incredible passion for the sport and with many years coaching in both Australia and the UK under his belt, he recognizes the importance of giving students an outlet.

Upon the introduction of the Rugby clinics, there was a very slow response, with only four participants attending. However, with the support from previous Principal, Shelly Bampton, and then by Principal John Searle, he perservered with the program. The Rugby clinics were open to all students, but it was the boys that consistently attended training. Sessions were held three times a week and numbers steadily grew. Suraj decided to have a ‘friendly’ opposed session against Kelvin Grove State College and he recalls beating them 50 – 0 on a Friday afternoon in late July 2018. ‘We had students with good skill sets and the boys were learning the rules of the game quickly so we ended up entering three tournaments that year at Caloundra, Caboolture and then the Ballymore 7’s tournament,’ recalls Suraj. With these tournaments under their belt, the Mitchelton SHS team was now on the map within the rugby circles. They won their pool at Caboolture that year but their most famous win was against Canterbury College – a private school that boasted many rugby teams. That win against them at the Ballymore 7’s was one of their first ‘big’ wins. In 2019, with John back at the helm, the school acquired rugby posts and the Mitchie Oval was transformed - Mitchelton SHS was now a school of Rugby - a dream Suraj had long held! Throughout 2019, the profile of Rugby was raised within the community and a new culture at Mitchelton SHS came to life, so Suraj started thinking about a team name. ‘I thought about the essence of Mitchie as a small school that took on much larger schools in competition,’ he reminisces. ‘I came up with the idea of calling ourselves the Mitchie Spartans as it mirrored the warrior like spirit needed to overcome the adversities faced in rugby.’ With a team name in place, a logo for the new jerseys, alongside a Mascot for the school, the stage was set for the Spartans first ever Rugby Carnival and local derby against Kelvin Grove! They had two teams playing, an U15 boys and an Open Boys team. Mr Searle even gave the green light to forego lesson four of that Wednesday afternoon so that all the students from the school could gather on the oval to support the two teams. It was a wonderful spectacle as the Spartan cheers were echoing around the oval with both teams being tunnelled out by students. Both teams secured wins that day marking the birth of the Mitchie Cup! Page 6 - December 2020, The Everton Echo

This year, the team has excelled with the Mitchie Spartans making it to their first ever Grand Final for the U15 age group. Bray Park stood before them in the Grand Final and it was reported that it was similar to a ‘David vs Goliath’ situation as many of the players from the opposing team were bigger than adults! Nevertheless, in true Spartan style, the team were courageous to the end. However, the constant pressure and the fatigue eventually took its toll on the Spartans as they went down 33 – 10 to Bray Park. Nevertheless, Suraj could not have been more pleased with his teams efforts. ‘We did so well to get two tries on them, I was such a proud coach,’ said Suraj. Next year, the Spartans are looking to field a girls team for the first time as they continue to grow. This is Spartan Rugby!!

A Bustling month at Gaythorne Bowls Club

November at Gaythorne Bowls Club has been a very active and enjoyable month for both club members and visitors.

On Friday 13th, November, the clubs new caterer Q and Co. was introduced to everyone that came to the club’s Activity Night. Q and Co. will be open to the public for meals at the Gaythorne Bowls Club on Friday and Saturday evenings. Visit their website for further details including menu and pricing. The Activity Night was a hit with the community and was one of the most successful events the club has organised to date. As well as utilising the club’s kitchen, the caterer brought along his food truck and some friends with their food trucks – so there was lots of variety to choose from. This was also the first time Gaythorne Bowls Club had organised a public event with food trucks and live entertainment and was a good learning experience for the club and the public. Barefoot bowls was also on offer, but the public response, and in particular a school group (parent and child) outing, did not leave any room on the green for the barefoot bowls! However, that was not a problem and everyone had a good evening. Gaythorne Bowls Club is a fully functioning club for bowls utilising both its greens for bowls, and as such, it is very important that the surfaces and edgings, etc. are cared for in a respectful way. This then ensures that bowlers will have the best surface possible to play on and that more public Activity Nights can be organised in the future. Two working bees were also held with club members over two days to rejuvenate Green No. 1. The first working bee was held on Sunday 8th, which involved scarifying the green surface to remove some grass, sand surfacing and then aerating the soil.

The second working bee was held on Friday 13th November and involved a very early start to wheel barrow sand onto the Green. The sand was then spread and leveled over the Green. Both working bees were very physical days and all the works were undertaken voluntarily by club members, with most of them being in their upper years. This work seems to be getting more difficult each year for the club, but the effort undertaken by the members ensures that the Greens are looking their best for the coming 12 months for members and barefoot bowlers. At the end of the 2nd day’s session, the workers were treated to a terrific and well-earned breakfast. By mid-January, this Green will be fully restored and ready for more bowls games. Gaythorne Bowls Club is a strong club that will be around in 2021 and well beyond. All members and volunteers at the club would like to wish everyone in the local community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Bocce Bus Trip to Mt Tamborine A monthly update from the Newmarket Bocce Club

WOW, what a fantastic day it was for 40 members of the Newmarket Bocce Club, when Red and White coaches took them to Mt Tamborine! Their driver was Matt and the host, the wonderful Margaret.

They left the club at Newmarket at 8.30am and travelled to a beautiful park by the Coomera River at Hope Island. Morning tea, which consisted of delicious Italian biscotti and expresso coffee, was enjoyed by all. The group then ventured off to Robert Souter Park, Creastmead, where hang gliders often take off. Although there were no hang gliders to be seen on the day, the view was spectacular - just have a look at the group below of the group to the left. Following the park visit, lunch was at St Bernards Hotel at Mt Tamborine. The view was amazing, food impeccable, and of The group enjoyed the spectacular view at Robert Souter Park course, there were real St Bernard dogs - four of them in total. After lunch, the group ventured off to ‘Gallery Walk’ at Mt Tamborine. There was about 800 metres of pure shopping pleasure with a variety of boutique shops on offer. Avocados must be in season because there were also market stalls everywhere. A few members even managed to purchase a couple of bottles of liqueurs from Castle Glen wineries! After the touch of retail therapy, it was homeward bound for the club. Beautiful Italian music was played in the background on the bus ride home and it was agreed that the whole group had a terrific time! If you want to know anything about bocce, please contact Mario 0403 257 325 or Bill 0431 458 481 Until next time, yours in bocce, Mario A delicious lunch was had by all!

Gemstones Galore

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club As Christmas time approaches and the accumulation of gifts occur, it reminds me of the abundance of lapidary material we had to choose from in the early days of lapidary. This, of course, was in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Now fossicking is quite different from those early days as many of the deposits have been dug out or closed to fossicking because of housing developments, National Parks and ‘no go’ areas. The varieties of gemstone material in those days, within a few hours drive of Brisbane, included Petrified Wood along with Agate from Ipswich, Tweed River, Nerang River, Beerburrum Creek and Redcliffe Peninsula to name a few. Then there was multi-coloured Jasper from Wongawallen, Kenilworth and the deep green Jasper from the Tweed Valley area. Thunder-eggs were gathered in various sizes from both north and south of Brisbane. A couple of hours north we could dig Thunder-eggs outside Eumundi. To the south the variety of spots were numerous, such as in Perch Creek, Cedar Creek, Canungra and Doon Doon Creek. Much material is also imported from overseas and sold locally by Lapidary/Gemstore businesses. Also, with the assistance of online suppliers, material can be purchased from far off countries which was never available in the past. Our clubrooms will be closed over the festive period for repairs and maintenance and to give the members who open the workshop every week a well earned break. Good things come to those who wait at Mitchelton Pre-schooling Centre!

Pictures 1 & 2: The new water pump has been a hit with the children and is the ideal way to cool down in the hot summer days. Picture 3: The children are enjoying being active with the new swing sets and fort.

Patience is an essential disposition when developing projects for not-for-profit organisations. The playground redevelopment began its life a number of years ago, after extensive dreaming and consultation with children, families and staff members. Some dreams do eventuate. After delays with construction due to challenges this year and ‘supervision’ from many children, a water pump, a creek, a digging patch, a mud kitchen, rolling grass and rocks, swings, a fort and art space have all been christened. What joy! Smiles have all been on the faces of the children, parents and teachers alike! There have been some unexpected discoveries: ‘Look you can see the trains (from the top of the bridge)’, ‘It’s like being in a shower without shampoo (water pump)!’ Some children have heard the pump working, which has prompted discussions about how the fox demand driven wash down diversion pump works. Water conservation has been and will continue to be a hot topic! As a staff team, we are over the moon to have watched children’s engagement, exchange of ideas, discovery, courage, consideration of others, problem-solving and patience. Forward planning is in action at MPC. We can only thank children and families from long ago who shared their ideas for children today to enjoy. Current children are brainstorming and sharing ideas for other areas, the results of which will be appreciated by future children. The playground has certainly provided rock-solid evidence that good things DO come to those who wait!

The new outdoor area is a delight for both children and staff alike! The Everton Echo, December 2020 - Page 15

Check in on your loved ones

The festive season brings people together in celebration of the holidays and the pending new year. It is a time of generosity and opportunity to offer a helping hand to your loved ones.

While visiting your elderly relatives or friends, it is important to take note of any changes in wellbeing or living standards. A messy house, empty fridge or poor hygiene are all indications that they may be struggling and could need support. Home modifications Mobility can decline as people age, and chronic conditions such as arthritis, or injuries and illnesses can make navigating the home challenging. Take note of any parts of the home that may be causing difficulty such as stairs, an elevated shower or the backyard. Modifications can be made to aid safety such as safety switches and handles or installing a walk-in shower or a chair lift to replace the stairs. Finance management Keep an eye out for any signs of disarray in keeping up to date with bills and finances. Australian Government website ‘Money Smart’ provides ideas and services for managing expenditure in older age. It also contains information on how to access support services to make everyday tasks, such as paying the bills, a bit easier. Keeping the fridge stocked Checking the fridge is a great way to assess the daily living standard of your loved one. Physical limitations may prevent them from accessing the shops or their ability to prepare a healthy meal. It may be an indication that they need some in-home support to achieve these daily tasks.

Page 18 - December 2020, The Everton Echo

Mental wellbeing Beyondblue reports that isolation is a growing issue in older Australians. The holiday period can be a particularly lonely time for the elderly: friends and neighbours go away, doctors and community centres close, and the heat may make it difficult to leave the house. Sitting down to have a chat with your loved one to discuss how they are coping can be the most effective way to alleviate any feelings of loneliness. Physical and mental changes are part of getting older, but there are many support services that can make day-today living that little bit easier. Paired with the support of family and friends, your loved one can continue to live in their home independently for many years to come. In the meantime, we are providing many opportunities to establish and maintain a connection with women in our community to share ideas, learn from each other and enjoy social interaction. We would love to see you at one of our upcoming events:

1st December at 10am - Techno Coffee Morning • Tuesday Arana Leagues Club • Tuesday 8th December at 10am - Zoom meeting 12th December at 12pm - Lunch Arana Leagues • Saturday Club 15th December at 10am - Techno Coffee • Tuesday Morning Arana Leagues Club

TAX MATTERS

from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

It is that time of year where attention turns to end of year celebrations and work functions. If you are an employer there is no such thing as a free lunch (or dinner), so just be aware of possible Fringe Benefit tax issues. FBT (Fringe Benefit Tax) Legislation provides that a Christmas Party holds the characteristic’s of a meal entertainment or recreation benefit, and therefore, may be fully or partly subject to a FBT liability. Further to any FBT liability, will your business be entitled to an Income Tax deduction or be able to claim GST credits on the costs incurred? Under the actual method, a Christmas party held offsite is only subject to FBT on meal entertainment and recreation benefits on the portion of the expenditure that relates to employees and their associates, clients and suppliers are exempt from FBT. Whilst FBT is not payable on the costs associated with clients and suppliers income tax deductions and GST credits are generally not allowed and therefore can only be claimed on the portion of the expenditure subject to FBT. Meals (food and drink, including alcohol) provided to current employees on site during normal work hours are exempt from FBT under the property benefit exemption, however their associates will remain subject to FBT. Another available exemption is the minor and infrequent exemption, where the notional taxable value of a benefit is less than $300, including GST per employee or their associate. The minor benefit exemption can be applied eliminating any FBT payable on the Christmas Party. In calculating the benefit per person, a per head apportionment can be applied to the total cost of the function to determine if the minor benefit can be applied.

Making by hand to connect the past with the future

Do you have memories of your grandmother’s or mother’s sewing room? A place of quiet creativity and wonder with all the shiny bobbins, colourful threads and carefully folded piles of fabric waiting to be turned into something! Since 2014, The Nest Community in Everton Park has received many wonderful donations from people who can’t bear the thought of throwing out their mother’s or grandmother’s prized possessions once they have passed away. In some cases, the donations also inspire participation. ‘We had a gentleman bring in all of his mother’s sewing equipment. He saw what we are doing here and was inspired to follow in his mother’s footsteps and learn to sew! One of our volunteers, Pauline, has been working one-on-one with him to take him through the basics,’ says Nest Community CEO and Co-founder, Roz Fenson. One of the Nest Community’s guiding principles is to create intergenerational connection and their volunteers do just that with their weekly Learn to Sew classes. Ms Fenson says, ’Every Saturday from 10am -12pm we offer Learn to Sew classes. We have a fleet of sewing machines, many of them top quality older machines that have been passed on to us from deceased estates. We currently have a group of eight year olds who are learning to sew from our volunteers – many of whom are old enough to be their grandmothers! It’s wonderful to see skills being passed on to our future generation of makers.’ With the Nest Community’s Haberdashery Thrift Shop providing a treasure trove of low-cost patterns, fabric, notions and thread, there is no better place to take up this crafty past time and connect with like-minded people. To find out more about The Nest Community’s regular sewing and craft workshops, visit Eventbrite or www.nestcommunity. org.au

Scout it Out Loud!

So every month, Enoggera Scouts put together an article to explain different aspects of the Scouting movement. But this month we decided to hand over the reins to those who know best – Scouts! In a series of candid interviews with some of our troop, we explored why they enjoy Scouts. Lucas – Scout Patrol leader, aged 13 (joined Enoggera Den as a Cub) ‘I really enjoy Scouts because I am able to learn important skills, ranging from broad problem-solving down to really practical stuff such as to all kinds of different knots. The thing I enjoy most is that I have made and kept some really great friends and we get to chill out, talk, learn, play games and generally get out and about. I must admit I am not a fan of all the paperwork though!’ Mackinnon – Assistant Patrol Leader, aged 13 (transferred to Enoggera Den as a Scout) ‘Scouts is like a regular get together with your friends, but where you learn things. Some of the best things we learn are during activities and on camps, where we have to organise all the equipment, activities and menus, and then do the shopping, packing and setting up. Of course the down side is the unpacking! Especially when tired Scouts don’t really listen to what an assistant patrol leader is saying.’ Elizabeth – Scout, aged 11 (just moved up from Cubs) ‘I value the fun and the good company. We play lots of games which is really enjoyable. Like all kids, sometimes my fellow Scouts can lose focus and act a bit silly, which can be annoying. But I guess that’s all part of the Scouts learning to be young leaders.’

Final word When asked what they would say to a parent considering Scouts, our trio’s responses were all quite similar: Come along and have fun! Bring some friends as well! It’s a great experience because it will teach you valuable life lessons. You have a chance to meet new people and learn new and useful skills like survival skills and first aid. Plus, you will develop more into your own person, learn leadership in its many forms, and built skillsets for a future job. Find out more So there you have it. War Chronicles from Our Veterans

Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that, as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history, as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries.

In collaboration with This Story, The Hills Echo is delighted to bring you the second edition of our monthly segment that showcases just a few of the veterans whose full stories can be found at the Queensland State Library (short bio's are available on the This Story website at www.thisstory.com.au). If you are a veteran and would like to share your story, This Story would love to hear from you, email jeff@thisstory.com. au or call 0439 661 448

Ronald Haysom

19/01/1925 - 24/06/2020 I Born Northgate, Melbourne

Ron joined the Australian Army Signal Corps after the bombing of Darwin in 1942. He later was sent to New Guinea, Borneo and Singapore. Ron shares some of the more vivid and tragic memories of what he saw in Borneo during the war, and met over 2000 Australian POWs in Changi prison before helping to care for them as they sailed home to Australia. Ron also shares the horrors that haunted him, then identified as ‘war neurosis’ (now known as PTSD), and his subsequent shock treatment in 1964. Ron credits the tremendous support of the DVA in the past 50 years as a comfort to him and his lifestyle. In his interview, Ron mentions how growing older alone can be pretty lonely, having outlived his beloved wife and many of his mates. We got to spend a great deal of time with Ron at his home in Sunnybank in the past two years but sadly he passed rather suddenly in June this year. He has left an indelible imprint on us here at This Story.

Cynthia Clifford Born 16th October 1923 I Born Kalgoorlie, Western Australia

Cynthia was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, but has been enjoying her twilight years at Fairview Retirement Living at Pinjarra Hills in the western suburbs of Brisbane. This feisty, courageous woman didn’t want to join the services as an administration officer even though she was highly experienced in this field. Instead, Cynthia decided to join the Artillery. As a gunner, Cynthia was responsible for putting the predictor and height finder data into the 3.7 inch Anti-aircraft guns at Leighton Battery on Buckland Hill, Mosman Park. Cynthia has a tremendous sense of humour, always has a smile on her face, and is a delight to all staff and residences at Fairview.

Alan Brown

21/03/1922 - 27/05/2019 I Stanthorpe, Queenland

Alan was born in Stanthorpe, Queensland. He joined the Airforce in 1941 with a mission to become a night fighter. Upon enlisting, Alan met his eventual copilot and best mate, Vic ‘Possum’ Whitfield. “Poss” as he was known, was a master of astro navigation and the two were the first Australians to land in Greece after the German occupation. Alan and ‘Poss’ flew 100 missions from bases in Africa to behind enemy lines in Greece and Italy, often delivering top secret officials to key destinations. Sadly, Alan’s mate ‘Poss’ succumbed to an illness just a few weeks after being discharged together from the service and passed away. Alan received a special commendation and gift from the Greek Prime Minister, Andreas Papandreou, in a private ceremony at World Expo ‘88 in Brisbane. Alan continued his love of flying after the war, founding gliding clubs across the Sunshine Coast area of Queensland. Alan spent the last years of his life in a home overlooking the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast perched high on a Nambour hill, and passed away in May of 2019 Page 24 - December 2020, The Everton Echo

Numbers up for Arana VIEW

A monthly update from the Arana VIEW Club It was great to see numbers slightly up at the November meeting of the Arana VIEW club.

The cent auction went off well with proceeds going towards supporting their Learning for Life students and the Smith Family activities. The guest speaker at the November meeting, Jo Neary, gave members a wonderful insight into the wonderful work the Zephyr Foundation does with supporting children. The December meeting will take place on Wednesday 2nd December at 10.15am for 11am start. Arana VIEW would love to see everyone really get into the Christmas Spirit and come dressed in their best Christmas outfit. There will be entertainment by musician and singer Pam Hodgson, so bring along your best singing voices! The club will hold its first 2021 meeting in February and this meeting is the Annual General Meeting. There are some vacant positions on the committee so please think about becoming more involved in the club. Contact Carol on 3355 5349 before Monday 30th November if you are attending the December meeting. Hopefully life will return to some normality in 2021. We welcome new members, so why not come along?

GRAB THAT GRANT!

Welcome to ‘Grab that Grant’, a monthly column which provides invaluable information about accessing and applying for funding. This information is brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall, founder of the Little Carolyn McCall Project Management Company.

Kicking off 2021 on the Right Foot

As we all come hurtling towards the end of this very interesting year, it’s nice to look back and reflect on the some of the amazing feats we have achieved in 2020. We don’t often take the time to really appreciate our past accomplishments. This reflection period is important to build our energy and to be able to visualise the success we can create in 2021. A Program & Grant Strategy is something that I would recommend every community organisation create at the beginning of the year. Like a Business or Strategic Plan, it helps to focus your intentions. In a Project & Grant Strategy, I like to start with a mini organisational review, then move onto developing program concept notes that align with you vision and then put together a funding plan so you can get your program funded. Organisational review I usually kick off the process by drawing out an organisation’s strengths. It forms the best foundation for creating programs. I use the SOAR (Strengths, Opportunity, Aspirations and Results) analysis tool and also look at the wins you have had throughout the year. I love process and understanding how something works! It’s really interesting to draw the process you take to create supportive partnerships, manage donor relationships, seek funding and measure outcomes. Is your process clear and easy? Program concept This is the exciting bit! This section results in a series of program concept notes that could involve little tweaks or larger expansions of current programs or creating new programs that are aligned to your vision. It helps everyone in your organisation stay on the same page when it comes to funding opportunities. The narrative of the program including the program summary, activities, and outcomes – can all be used in grant applications. Funding plan I always create a 12-month plan of grants. It can be hard to respond to grants as they arise because of the quick turnaround times, but there are some grants that are released at a similar time each year. If you haven’t already signed up for a grant seeking platform, then this is something to add to your ‘ToDo List’! I like to use The Grants Hub, but there are other

www.echo-news.com.au

amazing grant platforms out there that also offer affordable yearly subscriptions. On a side note, I just wanted to acknowledge all our amazing non-for-profit and for-purpose organisations out there. For the hours upon hours of hard work they have put in during this very unusual year—I say thank you! We all appreciate everything you do for our community!

We Are Here To Help!

The Everton Echo provides a platform for local community groups, organisations and clubs to share news and promote their events to our local area. The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Member of Parliament again this term.

Lions Christmas Cakes

Thank you

It has been my privilege to be the member for Ferny Grove for the past five years. It is my honour to be given the faith to represent you in Queensland Parliament for another term. I have been humbled by the genuine outpouring of trust and affection many people have shown me during the campaign this year. Thank you to the electors of Ferny Grove for your support. Thank you to my staff who work so hard to deliver the outcomes people need. Thank you to the tireless volunteers who have believed in what we are seeking to build. Further, I was very fortunate to retain my portfolio of Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and add to that Minister for Rural Communities. Queensland grows the best clean, green produce and fibres in the world and employees hundreds of thousands of people in the agriculture sector. Our Ag industry is the envy of the world and I will never tire of telling everyone of that fact. Queensland is well-placed to deal with the recovery from COVID because of the strong decisions by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the dedication and professionalism of our Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young and all who have served to keep us safe. My staff and I are now back in the office delivering the same hard work and dedication we have shown in the past to improve local services and schools and to fight to build a future where opportunity is enlarged for all.

Following my own Christmas tradition by selling Lions Christmas Cakes – with fellow Lion Brett Murphy at Great Western.

As we approach Christmas in a year like none we have ever had before there are still some things which remain constant. Lions Christmas Cakes is one of those things. Christmas cakes have been a major fundraiser for Lions Clubs since 1965. Proceeds from the cakes are donated back into the community supporting a number of good causes from blindness prevention and aged care to youth programs and everything in between. This year the Golden Valley Keperra Lions will be selling cakes at Bob Cassimaty Park at the following times: • Sat. 5th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sun. 6th December – 8.30am to 11.30am • Sun. 6th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sat. 12th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sat. 19th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm • Sun. 20th December – 8.30am to 11.30am • Sun. 20th December – 11.30am to 2.30pm

It’s always an honor to join with others and pay respect to Australia’s servicemen and servicewomen at the Gaythorne RSL Remembrance Day service. I want to also thank those who are currently serving our country and for the families that support their loved ones in this service. Let us never forget those who gave so much – and let their courage and dedication be an inspiration to us all.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

What a year! 2020 will go down as one of those years never to be forgotten. My thoughts go to those who have been severely impacted by COVID-19 whether through ill-health or their employment. Surely 2021 can only get better. Amongst this pain there is always some good to celebrate. For me, 2020 will be the year that my wife and I were blessed with three additional grandchildren ... one on election day! With this, from my family to yours, may you have a joyous Christmas and a healthy, happy new year.
