Bubblers Flow Thanks to Community Fundraising

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and escalating living costs, Everton Park State High School's Parent and Community (P&C) association has showcased resilience and adaptability, successfully achieving fundraising goals with a focus on installing chilled water bubblers for students.

Embracing a strategic approach, the Everton Park State High School P&C efficiently reached its fundraising target through just two impactful events. The first, a four-week raffle, captivated the community's attention with a coveted Thermomix as the grand prize. This engaging initiative not only generated funds but also fostered a sense of excitement and participation among students, parents, and local residents.

The second event, a Bunnings BBQ, showcased the commitment and dedication of the school community. Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic, volunteers and supporters came together to make the event a success. The Bunnings BBQ not only provided a platform for fundraising but also served as a gathering point for the school and the local community.

The funds raised from these two events were dedicated to the installation of chilled water bubblers, providing a valuable and sustainable addition to the school's facilities The successful realisation of the fundraising goals underscores the strength of the Everton Park State High School community.

It serves as a testament to the unwavering connection between the school and its supportive local community. Despite the

Serves: 4 | Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: 30 mins Ingredients To serve: • 4 small sweet potatoes, washed • 1 avocado, deseeded • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil • Juice of half a lime • Freshly ground pepper + extra for drizzling • Sour cream (reduced fat) • 1 onion, diced • Coriander leaves, • 1 garlic clove, crushed roughly chopped • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • ½ teaspoon ground coriander seeds • 400g can black beans, rinsed and drained • 1 cup cheddar cheese, reduced fat, grated

Method

1. PREHEAT oven to 200°C. 2. PRICK the surface of the sweet potatoes with a fork then drizzle each with olive oil and wrap individually in foil. Place on a baking tray.

3. ROAST for 30 minutes or until soft and a knife passes through with no resistance.

4. SLICE each potato in half lengthways and mash the insides to soften with a fork.

5. HEAT frying pan on medium heat then add oil once hot. Fry the onion, garlic and spices until soft for about 5 minutes.

6. ADD the black beans and heat through and TOP each potato with bean mixture and a sprinkle of cheese.

7 . MAKE guacamole by mashing the avocado in a small bowl and mixing through the lime juice and some ground pepper. SERVE the sweet potatoes with a dollop of guacamole and sour cream and sprinkle Alternative: Prick the surface of the sweet potatoes with a fork and wrap each one in a damp paper towel. Microwave each potato individually on high for 6 minutes, or until soft

Excitement Brews as Ferny Grove Markets Return Home

Excitement is brewing among local residents as the cherished Ferny Grove Markets prepare to make a grand comeback.

Recent speculations and rumors circulating on Facebook community pages sparked a surge of inquiries to Echo News, prompting a direct conversation with Colin, the Market Convenor, to shed light on the exciting news.

With the final approval from the Council in hand, the markets are gearing up for a monthly return on the first Saturday of each month. The chosen venue for this revival is the iconic Brisbane Tramway Museum, located at 20 Tramway Street, Ferny Grove.

Mark your calendars for the much-anticipated first market, set to take place on Saturday, 2nd March, from 6 am to 11 am.

Ferny Grove Markets have held a special place in the hearts of locals since their establishment in 1963. A longstanding attraction in the district, these markets have been a vibrant community hub, bringing residents and stallholders together.

Originally taking place every Sunday at Ferny Grove train station, the markets underwent a transition due to the new Transport Orientated Development at the station. Despite relocating to Chermside every Sunday, the return of the markets to the district on the first Saturday of every month is a welcomed addition, eagerly anticipated by locals.

The new venue at the Brisbane Tramway Museum offers a fresh and exciting backdrop for the markets, promising a delightful experience for both regular patrons and newcomers.

Sizzling Support from Bunnings Stafford An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club by Club Secretary Mario de Marco

Fundraising plays a crucial role in sustaining community groups and sports clubs, ensuring that members can continue to enjoy the offerings of the club.

The Newmarket Bocce Club, a local sporting club, is no exception to this reality. While they receive funds from membership sales, sponsored competitions, and various events throughout the year, it is still not sufficient to cover all the expenses.

The club extends its heartfelt gratitude to organizations like Bunnings, which has been a steadfast supporter, allowing them to host sausage sizzles. One particular Bunnings store, located in Stafford, has been collaborating with the Newmarket Bocce Club for several years now.

The Bunnings team demonstrates a high level of professionalism in organizing the sausage sizzles. They go the extra mile to ensure that the club has everything it needs for a successful fundraising day. The Bunnings Stafford team's commitment to the cause is truly commendable.

However, the success of these fundraising events would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of the Newmarket Bocce Club's team of volunteers. Approximately 10 volunteers come together to create a well-organized roster system throughout the day, ensuring smooth operations.

While the sausage sizzles are undeniably enjoyable, it is essential to recognize the hard work put in by the volunteers.

Three or four team members are present throughout the entire day, tirelessly ensuring that everything is stocked and running seamlessly. Their work ethics and dedication contribute

The Newmarket Bocce Club takes great pride in and is immensely appreciative of the individuals who generously volunteer their time to support the club. Local Ladies Celebrate Half a Century of Friendship

By Georgia Wright Thursday the 18th January, 2024, marks 50 years since a group of local ladies met while teaching at Ferny Hills State School in 1974. A group who, to this day, remain in close contact and cherish their lifetimes’ worth of memories made together.

To commemorate this milestone, the ladies held their annual reunion lunch at the Everton Park Tavern—a tradition they have made sure to continue for all five decades of friendship.

Georgia Wright, Echo News’ journalist, was fortunate enough to pop in for this year’s lunch and listen to their beautiful stories.

The seven ladies in attendance— Jan Cameron, Elizabeth Kriesch, June Nowitzki, Lesley Twigg, Kath Kaminski, Geraldine McLaughlin, and Wendy Cornford—were more than eager to reminisce on their favourite moments spent together.

Wistful and smiling, they shared tales of travelling on dirt roads in “trusty Volkswagen Beetles” to reach the schools they taught at, navigating the 1974 floods together, and even training for a sort of Ninja Warrior program as a means of fundraising for a new school hall!

Interestingly, the lunch was as much of a trip down memory lane for the ladies as it was a history lesson for Georgia. She learnt that back in their day, Ferny Hills State School was a two-teacher, one-building school that was considered suitable for country service. It was mortifying, as well, for Georgia to learn that female teachers were formally forbidden to wear Continued on page 5 trousers to work. Instead, skirts and stockings were mandatory uniform. As well, when Elizabeth began her career in 1968 at Virginia State School, she used a chalkboard to teach her students, who each had handheld slates to write notes on. Funny enough, her last leg of teaching was during Covid, when her job was reduced to running classes online via Teams meetings.

“Computers hadn’t even been invented when I first started teaching!” Elizabeth explained, shaking her head at how much times have changed.

Another huge culture shock took place when the ladies spoke of getting paid in cash, or enveloped cheques that they had to collect from the bank each week, rather than through online bank transfers.

But history lessons aside, it was the unconditional love the ladies had for each other and for their careers that shone through most over lunch. Despite many of the ladies having reached retirement, it sounded like a conflicting task for them to leave behind teaching. All seven of the women began working as teachers as soon as they graduated from school and did not switch careers once. All seven, as well, managed to pass on the teaching torch to their children, effectively raising the next generation of passionate teachers! As it turns out, their children have all known each other since birth, as the ladies used to host a playgroup together as young mothers! Forty odd years later, they still remain in contact.

Before Georgia took off, the ladies all nodded along as Elizabeth shared with her that the most important thing you can do in life is maintain contact with old friends. She believes that carrying your loved ones through all phases of your life can help you remain in touch with your own identity. For there is no reason to neglect your most treasured memories—and people—no matter how many years have passed. They are part of you, after all.

Probus Club Marks 30 Years of Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship

The Combined Probus Club of Bridgeman Downs, a vibrant community for active retired and semi-retired individuals, proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary in June 2023. With a robust current membership of 82 members, the club continues to thrive, embodying the Probus spirit of Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship.

Established in June 1993, the Bridgeman Downs Probus Club stands as a non-fundraising organization, focusing on creating a supportive and enjoyable environment for its members.

Monthly meetings are a highlight, featuring guest speakers who delve into a diverse range of topics, covering history, healthy living, legal information, and more.

The club’s allure lies in its extensive array of activities, catering to varied interests. From day trips, BBQs, special lunches, dinners, theatre outings, to cruises, the Bridgeman Downs Probus Club ensures a calendar packed with engaging events. Special interest groups, including gardening, craft, men’s and ladies’ luncheons, Majhong, and the Armchair Traveller group, contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the club.

The yearly short and long trips, eagerly anticipated by members, add an extra layer of excitement. Recent trips have taken members to witness the mesmerizing sight of turtles hatching in Bundaberg and to delve into the world of black opals in Lightning Ridge during a 6-day excursion.

A shining success in fostering camaraderie among Probus Clubs in Brisbane’s north side is the yearly Friendly Trivia Quiz. This annual event allows members from various clubs to come together, furthering the Probus spirit and creating lasting connections.

SignOn for local sports We are fortunate to have so many community-minded sports clubs in our region. In this feature we showcase some of our local clubs and provide information regarding their upcoming Sign On days, events or classes.

Falcons Spread Their Wings

The last two years have seen the Ferny Grove Falcons grow by 30% in their overall registrations, tripling the number of female players. Further growth is anticipated for the 2024 season with the Club retaining majority of its 2023 coaching team.

In the 2023 season the AFL Club fielded 3 superstar teams; 2 U8 teams, 2 U9 teams, U9 and U11 girl teams, a mixed U13’s team, a U17’s boys team, a Senior’s team, as well as both women and men’s Masters teams. A huge boost for the Club in 2023 was fielding their first women’s Masters team.

The Club aims to have the same number of teams and representation for the 2024 season, in addition to being able to field teams for the U10’s and U11’s mixed team, girls only U13’s and U15’s competitions, and an U15 boys team. Whether you are young or young at heart, there is a place for you to play AFL with the Ferny Grove Falcons.

The Ferny Grove Falcons is a proud AFL local community club, nestled up on the hill behind the tramway museum on Tramway Street, opposite the Ferny Grove Police Station.

The Club has its origins from 1991 with their initial home ground being the Ferny Grove State High School. The Club has come a long way since 1991 and is considered to be an integral part of the wider Ferny Grove community which extends to the surrounding suburbs of Upper Kedron, Keperra, Arana Hills, Samford, Grovely and Ferny Hills.

Celebrating 32 Years of Success

Nobody imagined that 32 years after conception, The Hills Echo would still retain its popularity as a community newsmagazine in The Hills District and surrounds.

It all began in January 1992 when the very first Hills Echo edition rolled off the printing presses in Warwick and bussed its way to Ferny Hills. Those were the days of light tables, wax guns, photocopiers to increase/reduce logos and layout sheets. Yes, it was typeset on a computer, but ads were made up individually - printed out and then pasted into the blank boxes left vacant on the typeset page. It was hot work, bent over the light table wielding the hot wax gun in the middle of a Brisbane summer!

Full colour was only a dream as it involved specialised film to be made by a graphics company which incurred added production costs. Instead, spot colour was available and the first edition boasted two spot colours - red and yellow. Each spot colour required a clear acetate overlay over the layout sheet and precise, fiddly placement to ensure the “colour” stayed within the black lines beneath. That light table was so very important!

The Hills Echo commenced at the beginning of desktop publishing when computers replaced hot metal type.

But the predecessor of The Hills Echo started in a more primitive fashion. The Advisor was the first community publication in the Hills District. With local historian Melva Welch as its Editor and chief organiser, The Advisor was produced by the two local Progress Associations - The Arana Hills Progress Association and The Ferny Hills Progress Association. All work was voluntary from the writing of articles, sale of advertising, printing and distribution.

The final product was a collection of stories and advertising printed on different sized and coloured paper and held together by a staple in one corner. It was printed on a spirit print press where the handle was turned for each page of copy. Volunteers assembled once a month to print, collate and staple The Advisor all ready for distribution. Further volunteers would collect their copies and distribute their allotted area.

Whenever newcomers settled in The Hills District they would be visited by a greeter who would welcome them to the local area, answer any questions and leave them a Welcome Pack which always included the latest copy of The Advisor.

But all good things come to an end eventually. Volunteers became scarce and more and more people were discovering The Hills District as a great place to live. The President of the Arana Hills Progress Association, Bruce Smith sought the assistance of a local publications company, R.P.K. Publications, who agreed to typeset The Advisor and print it professionally. The Advisor changed its format to an A4 magazine with spot colour and centre staples. The Progress Associations were still in control of the writing of articles and sale of advertising. This arrangement continued for some time until once again, the scarcity of volunteers saw The Advisor run at a loss and its final edition was printed and distributed in December 1991.

Roger and Lyn Fryer, owners of R.P.K. Publications, recognised the benefits of a local community newsmagazine and saw the potential for further growth and success. While on a family holiday over that Christmas period, they planned, costed and devised schedules which saw the birth of The Hills Echo. The January 1992 first edition of The Hills Echo was 24 pages in A4 size, printed on 40 gram newsprint. The same format as The Advisor but with a new masthead and layout.

The print run was 3,500 which covered the whole of The Hills District plus Ferny Grove. The sale of advertising supported the cost of production and the distribution was done professionally into letterboxes and businesses.

Thirty years later, The Hills Echo print run is now 14,500 copies, covering an almost identical area and is now owned

by Katie Maclean of MAC Group Publications Pty Ltd - a local independent publisher. The paper still retains a very local flavour and has continued to conquer many local hearts within the Hills District and surrounding suburbs.

Furthermore, to keep up to the times, The Hills Echo is now a multi media platform, comprising print and digital media including a popular website (www.echo-news.com.au), social media, an app and enewsletter. In addition, she now also has two sibling publications - The Everton Echo and The Eatons Echo .

Back issues of The Hills Echo can be found in the Arana Hills Library and the State Library. They provide a walk through the history of The Hills District, showcasing developments, politicians and achievements of many talented citizens. It is the only local newsmagazine now servicing this community and its popularity continues to grow with constant contributions from local groups, loyal advertisers and readers.

David’s extensive 24year career in Building and Construction reflects his journey that began with an apprenticeship at the age of 16. After successfully completing his apprenticeship, he took a significant step in acquiring his builder’s license.

Local Albany Creek legend, 17-year-old James Wraight from Padua College has been making big waves with a unique approach to raising awareness and funds for the domestic and family violence foundation, Small Steps 4 Hannah.

Small Steps 4 Hannah was established by Sue and Lloyd, parents of the late Hannah Clark, and her three children who tragically lost their lives when their car was set on fire by Hannah's husband on February 19, 2020. The foundation has tirelessly worked to raise awareness about domestic violence, resulting in legal changes that recognize coercive control as a form of abuse. In the face of a growing incidence of domestic and family violence, the foundation emphasizes the importance of education and awareness.

joined an online challenge – a handstand every day for 19 days that was brought to his attention by local running group Run With Rob. Hoping to use his leverage as a national gymnast, the goal was to raise both funds and awareness for Small Steps 4 Hannah. James created a GoFundMe page and, alongside his mother, embarked on a journey to visit numerous Brisbane landmarks. At each location, he held a handstand for either 19 seconds or took 19 steps on his hands. In his first year, James raised an impressive $1500, and in the second year, the amount nearly doubled to $2500. The culmination of his efforts was marked by a generous $1000 check presented by his college principal to Sue and Lloyd on the final day of the challenge.

Determined to extend his support, James is now gearing up to take part in a remarkable endeavour organised by the Small Steps For Hannah Foundation – a Guinness Book of Records attempt to host the largest group handstand ever. Calling on participants from various backgrounds, including gymnasts, dancers, cheerleaders, builders, bakers, and even candlestick makers, Small Steps For Hannah hopes to assemble a group capable of holding a handstand for a mere 5 seconds – with straight legs and locked arms.

Scheduled for Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Hannah’s Place Memorial Park in Camp Hill, the record-breaking attempt aims to bring together over 400 handstand enthusiasts.

Not only will participants potentially etch their names in the Guinness Book of Records, but they will also contribute to a noble cause by raising funds to combat Domestic and Family Violence.

Registration for the event is open, and interested individuals can sign up by scanning the provided QR code or visiting the official event website.

So please join this extraordinary initiative, where a few seconds of balance can make a significant impact on the fight against domestic violence.

This popular Early Intervention and Equine Assisted Learning Centre is nestled in the scenic Mount Samson area of Brisbane, and was founded by Equine Assisted Learning professional Anne Pearson. Field of Dreams Carer’s Sessions 2024

Carers can now access monthly self-care sessions claimable through NDIS. These sessions offer a blend of learning about self-care strategies, peer connections, and therapeutic activities.

Participants enjoy herbal tea or coffee on arrival, engage in group bonding, and choose from therapeutic art, art journaling, craft activities, or interaction with therapy horses.

Field of Dreams-Early Intervention and Support introduces Play 4 Therapy in 2024, a specially crafted program supporting parents and carers with children experiencing developmental delays or disabilities.

The program, starting on January 31st, 2024, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, offers structured routines focusing on fine and gross motor skills, sensory play, music, and rhymes. Parents and carers also receive follow-up activities for home or childcare.

Community Unites in Generosity in Honor of Emily Borg In our December editions, you may recall a story published across our magazines regarding fiveyear-old Emily Borg, a cherished member of the community, who tragically passed away last year.

Diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, Emily's condition was initially mistaken for a viral infection.

However, further tests revealed a grapefruit-sized tumor in her abdomen, swiftly spreading The beautiful Emily Borg to her spine, bones, and head.

Despite undergoing intensive chemotherapy and surgery, complications arose after a successful tumor removal, leading to a rare infection that her weakened immune system couldn't overcome.

In honor of Emily, her family organized a local Christmas toy drive for children at the Queensland Children’s Hospital which exceeded all expectations. What began as an aim to contribute 500 gifts for the children at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, resulted in an overwhelming collection of over 1500 presents, marking an incredible threefold achievement.

The week before Christmas, these gifts found their way to the Queensland Children's Hospital, bringing joy and comfort to the young patients. Nurses at the hospital, particularly those who had cared for Emily, gratefully accepted the generous donations.

The outpouring of support was so immense that the donated presents surpassed available storage space. In response, a decision was made to continue the spirit of giving throughout 2024 by pledging monthly donations of 100 presents to the Oncology ward, a touching gesture in memory of Emily.

One poignant moment involved a special donation to a brave young boy named Mateoh, who has bravely battled Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) and hemolytic anemia for four years. Mateoh's mother recalled fond memories of Emily's cheerful demeanor and her melodious singing from

Nurturing the Tranquil Lull

An update from the Hills Organic Garden The festive season has come and gone and, once again, our garden is now almost in holiday mode with very little growing at the moment.

Summer is a very quiet time at the garden apart from carrying out maintenance over these hotter months. Weeding the beds, mowing and whipper snipping are high on the list of tasks in order to keep the garden looking good. With the amount of rain we have had recently the grass and weeds are almost out of control.

Our members are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and an inviting place to work as well as welcoming visitors who often come down to have a look at our garden.

As we do not have much growing at the moment, most of the beds will have a good rest over the hotter months . However, come March the fertilising and composting will start in preparation for winter planting.

This is an exciting time for members as they choose what they would like to plant around April and ultimately consume when harvest time comes around in August/September.

The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3pm - 5pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance.

You will find the group at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors.

There will not be a speaker at the February meeting as the Annual General Meeting will be held. It will be a chance for members to socialise and catch up after the Christmas break. by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove Delivering for public transport A major component of the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development is the integration of Bus services. Keen eyed locals will have noted the activity in the old Conavella angle parking area where a new bus component is being installed.

Once stage two is completed, the bus stop will serve for the remainder of the build before the bus station is integrated into stage two of the build.

Delivering for our schools All of our local schools’ minor upgrades and Christmas maintenance backlogs are now completed – just in time for the start of the school year. Also this year, all classrooms in Queensland have been air-conditioned, providing our staff and students a better environment for them to get on with the business of teaching and learning.

Ferny Hills State School’s Amenities Block upgrade is well underway with stage one demolitions now complete – ready for the new retaining wall and foundation work. I dropped in to catch up with the foreman Alvin and Principal Brad Geisel to inspect the latest developments.

Inspecting the Conavella Street Bus Station Build Looking at plans for the Ferny Hills State School’s Amenities Block upgrade Delivering for sport Round 10 of the Queensland Government’s FairPlay vouchers, valued up to $150, is now open. The FairPlay program is open to eligible children aged between five and 17 and is designed to help reduce the cost of sports memberships, registration or participation fees, and ease cost-of-living pressures.

MAKING ENOGGERA WARD AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO LIVE An update from Cr Andrew Wines, Enoggera Ward

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and I are committed to keeping Brisbane moving. We are doing this by focusing on a modern multimode transport plan.

The Council controlled Enoggera and Kelvin Grove Roads have had a number of improvements made to them, that have made them handle more traffic more efficiently. The problem is, and this has shown up in community surveys is that the State owned Samford, South Pine, and Wardell corridors are the real problem. I, and the Brisbane City Council proposed the North West Transport Plan. This plan provided the best way to address to provide new subterranean roads and northwest rail, Metro to Aspley and new bus services. While the plan is very large, one of the road tunnels has been adopted by the Queensland Investment Corporation and will be finished this decade.

Kelvin Grove/ Enoggera Road

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is focussed on keeping Brisbane Moving, by improving The Kelvin Grove/Enoggera Road Corridor. We will be focussing on getting people home sooner and safer by improving the operation of the network, upgrading a number of intersections through the corridor to improve travel time, and bus convenience and reliability. I will also continue my campaign to improve the Queensland Government owned Samford, Wardell, and South Pine Corridors.

Enoggera Ward Office is now a drop point for Baby Give Back. Baby give back is about giving new life to baby gear you don’t need anymore.

Safe School Precincts for Enoggera Ward

I have always been committed to improving safe access to our local schools. That is why I am continuously working to secure funding to upgrade Safe School Travel infrastructure. With the funding I have secured, safety improvements are being planned at Oakleigh State School, Mitchelton State School, Mitchelton State High School, Newmarket State School and Windsor State School. Making it easier and safer for our community to access local schools is part of my ongoing commitment to improve our suburbs and make Enoggera Ward an even better place to live.

The Schrinner Council has a rolling program of works which sees our bikeways and paths have lighting installed, making them safe and useable during the evening. In recent years we completed sections of the Enoggera Creek Bikeway, and we are looking at ways to extend lighting on the Kedron Brook.

The 2022 floods slowed progress on the new Kedron Brook lighting, as we had to restore the lighting that was damaged in the floods, but we are now preparing to get this work started again.

People should rightly feel safe in our community, and I hope that this investment in our bikeways and paths does that.

With more than 43,000 Queenslanders desperately waiting for social housing, it was very disappointing to hear the State Government had made no progress in working out how the Pinkenba Quarantine Centre could be used to house those desperate for a roof over their head.

This centre has sat dormant for the last two years with 500 beds. When you add this to the $220m that was wasted on the 1000 bed Wellcamp facility in Toowoomba, it’s clear the State Labor government is offering very little but false hope.

Additionally, with the costs of private rentals soaring and record low vacancy rates, the situation is becoming more desperate.

As the shadow minister for housing, I am determined to increase the supply of houses … in all categories.

The LNP has put solutions on the table to ease the Queensland Housing Crisis, including prioritising infrastructure partnerships with local government to unlock more land for housing, unleashing the community housing sector and setting KPIs and delivering social housing projects on-time and on-budget.
