Unexpected Closure of Cherished Local Pub

In a surprising turn of events, the Stafford City Tavern, a cherished establishment on the northside, closed its doors abruptly last month following an announcement from one of the state’s largest pub and liquor groups, Star Group.

The news left both staff and loyal patrons shocked and bewildered, with comments flooding local community groups, expressing disappointment at the closure.

Management delivered the unexpected blow to staff, revealing that the popular Stafford City Tavern would permanently cease operations. The announcement regarding the pubs closure was made via a surprising Facebook post.

Stunned employees and patrons expressed their astonishment, claiming they were caught off guard and had no prior knowledge of the imminent closure. The venue, situated at the Stafford City Shopping Centre since 2005, closed its doors within hours of the announcement. It is reported that the shopping centre’s management company, Retail First is disappointed about the closure. Both parties had reached an agreement on new lease terms that were more favorable for the tenant than the shopping centre owner, with no increase in rent.

The shopping centre, inaugurated in 1983 on Stafford Rd, housed the original tavern named The Beach House, which opened in December 2005 and later transformed into The Three Little Pigs before Star Group took over the lease in 2020. It has yet to be substantiated when a new tenant will be secured or what type of business will replace the beloved tavern.

Celebrating 60 Years of Community Spirit

Since its establishment in 1964, the Aspley Hornets Football Club has been a cornerstone of the Aspley, Carseldine, and surrounding communities.

What began as a junior club has blossomed into a multifaceted organisation, providing a pathway for players from Auskick at age 6 all the way through to Masters for those over 35.

In response to the growing needs of its players, the club expanded into senior football during the Seventies and Eighties, ensuring seamless progression for athletes without the hassle of changing clubs.

The evolution of the Aspley Hornets extends beyond the football field. From humble beginnings as a community hall, the club’s clubhouse has transformed into a thriving hub featuring a spacious restaurant, members’ lounge, bar areas, bottle shop, and versatile function rooms. With 167 poker machines, Keno, and TAB facilities, it has become a central gathering place for locals.

To commemorate this milestone, the Hornets invite the community to join them on Sunday, March 24th, from 3pm onwards for a family-friendly outdoor extravaganza. Festivities will include rides, carnival games, face painting, live music, food vans, outdoor bars, and culminate in a spectacular fireworks display at 7pm.

Aspley Hornets’ 60th anniversary celebration is not only a tribute to its rich history but also a testament to its enduring commitment to fostering community spirit and providing topnotch sporting and social experiences

Empowering Seniors with Affordable Tech Training

Brisbane Seniors Online (BSOL) is revolutionizing the way seniors and those over 50 embrace technology with affordable computer training in the Greater Brisbane area.

Tailored to the individual learner, tuition is typically conducted one-on-one in the comfort of the learner’s home, utilizing their personal computer. Remote training options are also available as needed. BSOL covers a wide array of devices, including Windows PCs, laptops, Apple devices, smartphones, Androids, and even a specialized Linux group. With a focus on individualized learning at the learner’s pace and on topics

they desire, empathetic mentors of similar age are available, with the average learner age being 74. Notably, BSOL has two learners who are over 100, proving that it’s never too late to learn.

Special Interest Groups in Digital Photography, Linux, and Apple typically meet monthly at the Woolloongabba Training Centre, with some sessions held via Zoom or a combination of face-to-face and virtual interaction. The Shutterbugs Digital Photography group, for instance, explores themed photographic topics and organizes excursions, with selected photographs featured in the monthly BSOL newsletter.

BSOL actively welcomes new volunteer mentors, particularly those proficient in teaching various devices, including Apple products. Mentor support is provided through a combination of Zoom meetings and face-to-face interactions, ensuring a supportive community for mentors to enhance their skills. Community and non-profit groups can benefit from BSOL speakers, who provide insights into emerging technology and how BSOL supports seniors and those over 50. These informative talks come at no cost to the hosting groups.

BSOL extends gratitude to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for recent funding, acknowledging their continued support over the years. New learners can join BSOL for a one-time $20 joining fee and an annual fee of $45, receiving approximately 12 hours of home lessons initially. For more information, contact 3393 2225, email bsolhq@bsol.asn.au, or visit www.bsol.asn.au

Community Rallying to Save Historic St Matthews Anglican Church

In a bid to preserve one of Brisbane's oldest and most cherished landmarks, the St Matthews Anglican Church Hall, located at 35 Church Road, Mitchelton, is hosting a car boot sale fundraiser. The initiative aims to raise funds to repair the leaking roof of the heritage-listed church, dating back to 1917, which has played a vital role in local history.

Despite its historical significance, St Matthews Anglican Church Hall receives no funding for the necessary repairs, particularly the badly leaking roof, estimated to cost $50,000. Many local community groups, including The Hills Players Inc, The Lions Club, and Alcoholic Anonymous, call this iconic church home.

To address the urgent repair needs, the church committee has organized a car boot sale, inviting the community to participate and contribute to the preservation of this landmark. The event will take place on Saturday, March 9th, from 7 am to noon, providing a perfect opportunity for residents to declutter and support a noble cause or just come down and have a shop!

For those interested in securing a car boot space or an indoor table, pre-booking is essential. Please contact events. grovelyanglican@gmail.com to reserve your space. A payment of $25 in advance guarantees your participation in the fundraiser, contributing directly to the repair fund.

Come join the community in saving a piece of local history and ensuring St Matthews Anglican Church Hall continues to be a cherished place for generations to come. Let's make a difference together!

St Matthews Anglican Church

A little bit more of this iconic church’s history

Founded by early settlers, the Nicholsons, the church was envisioned due to the frustration of having to travel a considerable distance to the nearest Anglican church in the Valley. It was constructed on their estate, near Grovely Lodge, and although never consecrated, it has been the site of numerous baptisms, weddings, and burials since 1869. The church hall has retained its original red cedar pews, providing a glimpse into over 140 years of worship.

Bocce Bonanza with The French Connection

An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club by club Secretary Mario de Marco

Friday 9 February: What a great day for our club. I call it ‘The French Connection’. Our club was lucky enough to be the first port of call for not only Jean-Yves Peromet, National Director of France Federation and Coach but also, world and european champions Frederic Marsens and Pauline Gouilloud.

We had a welcome lunch at the club followed by two games of bocce. Representing our club in the first game was Silvio Rotili and Silva Piotto. The score was 13-4 to the French. Second game was Natale Zaini and Nadia Lazzarin. The score 13-0 to the French. The club is very proud of our players, playing the best in the world.

Bocce Australia Coach Kerrie Reitano with local players

Saturday 10th February: Another great day with The French Connection. This time at Redlands Bocce Club. Bill, Carmelo and I attended the International Coaching seminar. That was fantastic and we can bring a lot of learnings to our club. The mixed teams of Lewis Sciortino and Nevia Deklic: and Mario Menelli and Luz Van Hemmen played against the French team of Pauline and Frederik. France won the first game 13-0 and the second game was nail biting. The team of Mario and Luz lost by 1 point: 9-8. Overall it was a great day for bocce.

Sunday 11th February: Continuing with The French Connection. Sunday we had France v Australia Redlands Bocce Club. They played three disciplines, the Bowl/Throw mixed, Precision mixed and Rapid mixed doubles.

Chiara Tomasi and Anthony Parlato AUS. The Precision was 18-2 to France Barbara Jones and Enzo Tomasi AUS and the Rapid 54 hits for France and 32 hits for Australia, Daniel and Nicole Samsa AUS.

Chief referee was Joe Masalli assisted by Mario De Marco, Joe Reitano and Neil Parlato. They will be heading down to Sydney and Melbourne as well. You can catch all the action in the Bocce Australia home page. Remember: there are no losers in bocce, we are all winners.

Mitchelton Seniors Club Springs Back into Action

The Mitchelton Seniors club returns for another year of fun and festivities. They kicked off the year with entertainment from the ever popular John Cornelius and will continue to have live entertainers every week throughout the year.

Easter is fast approaching and the club has a number of Easter themed hampers to give away, an Easter bonnet parade, followed by a special lunch.

Over the break, members of Mitchelton Seniors Club sadly had to say goodbye to one of their most loved people, Lee. She was a very friendly and helpful person, always giving of herself and expecting nothing in return. Thanks to Lee’s efforts, the club enjoyed one of the best club libraries in the district.

Are you a jig-saw fan? The club has a vast collection for use by members.

It is with excitement that the club announces that the popular bus trips have returned with the March trip going to Ipswich, where they will be having morning tea followed by an escorted bus trip of the historic buildings of this city. The April 18 trip is to The Condensery at Toogoolawa, and the May 16 venue is planned to be a boat cruise on the Brisbane River. Other club facilities include on-site hair dresser and podiatry.

New members are always welcome, just pop along to 30 Tel-El-Kebir Street, Mitchelton on Monday mornings or phone 3355 0358 for information. Tuesday and Friday mornings we play indoor bowls if that is more to your fancy and your $3 entry includes morning tea.

Trivia Night Kickoff and a BIG Announcement

The Hills Players are kicking off 2024 with a Trivia Night on the 23rd March at 7pm at St Matthews Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. Andrew McMicking, Trivia Quiz Master extraordinaire will be the host with the most. So, if you’re a Trivia Tragic and love your general knowledge being challenged, or just looking for a fun Saturday night out, then don’t miss out. Grab a group of friends and book a table, or come along solo and the crew will find you some Trivia buddies for the night. Admission is only $10, with tables of 6-8 seats. BYO alcohol and nibblies too! There will also be raffles and lucky door prizes up for grabs. Other big news just in from the team is that after much deliberation and consideration (and just the slightest bit of angst), The Hills Players will be performing ‘A Night with Robinson Crusoe’ by Linda Aronson. So be sure to keep either the 17th, 18th, 24th or 25th May free! Stay tuned for more details via The Hills Echo or via our Facebook page. The play has been cast, but the Hills Players are always on the lookout for new blood. Young females and especially males are encouraged to join. The more diverse the Hills Players membership is, the more scripts open up for the group to perform in the future. So, if you’ve had a burning ambition to appear on stage in a non-intimidating and fun environment, they would love to hear from you. Send an email to hillsplayers@gmail.com, or come along to the groups meetings on the first Monday of the month at the St Matthews Church Hall, Mitchelton at 7pm.

Edible Garden Trail Gears Up for Its Fifth Blossoming Year

In the fertile soil of community spirit, the seed of the Samford Edible Garden Trail (SEGT) was sown five years ago.

Now, as the Trail approaches its fifth annual showcase this May, what started as a tiny seed has burgeoned into a thriving weekend of inspiration and connection for the entire community.

Amidst the challenges of summer storms, some plants have weathered the tempests, while others have flourished in the warm, humid embrace, yielding delicious fruits.

The SEGT team had the privilege of witnessing this firsthand during a recent visit to the garden of Pauline and Rob, who will once again open their edible oasis for display during the Trail weekend in May.

Save the dates for the Samford Edible Garden Trail – May 18th and 19th – a weekend set to be a celebration of green thumbs, sustainable living, and the flourishing sense of community. Tickets for this botanical adventure will sprout in March, and enthusiasts are encouraged to stay tuned to the SEGT's Facebook or Instagram for updates and information about the Trail. More than just a showcase of gardens and harvests, the SEGT has grown into a community-building initiative, cultivating not only food but also friendships. One seed at a time, the Trail has become a symbol of the interconnectedness of the Samford community.

A Beautiful Bond: Kim, the Caregiver, Transforming Lives

A shock cancer diagnosis has led to enduring compassionate support and a window to the outside world for 74-year-old Barbara Knott.

Doctors diagnosed Barbara with melanoma, giving her just eight months to live. That was five years ago!

At the time, the news plunged her into a world of uncertainty. With no family living nearby to provide the support she needed, Barbara turned to a home care provider for help with transport to medical appointments, home cleaning, grocery shopping and social support.

That’s when Barbara met Kim Long from Just Better Care Brisbane North. It was the beginning of a beautiful working friendship.

‘Kim is my primary support. She is an amazing, caring person who makes my life worthwhile. Without her I would need to be in care,’ Barbara said.

‘We laugh the whole time we are together; Kim takes me for all my medical appointments including cancer treatment and endless scans. My oncologist has high regard for her also because of the way she cares for me.’

Before she met Barbara, Kim was unemployed. Her job network suggested a career change through a Certificate in Disability and Aged Care.

‘Barbara was my first ever client five years ago,’ Kim said. ‘I wish I’d found this profession years ago. It’s just such a rewarding job in the rapport that I feel with the customers and the difference I can make to their lives.’

The pair find solace in shared moments like grocery shopping,

outings for coffee, walks along the foreshore and trips to Bunnings, where Barbara indulges in her passion for orchids.

Barbara is so grateful, she nominated Kim for a national award: the Aged and Community Care Providers Association (ACCPA) ‘You Are ACE!’ recognition.

ACCPA CEO Tom Symondson says home care workers like Kim can change lives but are in short supply.

‘There’s a massive shortage of carers in Australian aged care and the beautiful friendship between Kim and Barbara shows just how rewarding a career it can be,’ said Mr. Symondson. Kim says her three children and three grandchildren are “tickled pink” with the recognition.

Nurturing the Tranquil Lull

An update from the Hills Organic Garden

With the dry weather and hot temperatures, our garden is looking a little depleted and unproductive. It is just too hot to plant anything, so we have decided to rest the beds until the cooler months around April/ May.

Mowing and weeding are constant chores despite the dry weather, so there is always work to be done.

We are quite excited to have a couple of flowers on our dragon fruit vine, so hopefully, eventually, we will have some fruit. March usually sees us starting to prepare the garden beds for April/May plantings. They need to be topped up with fresh soil, fertilizer, and compost and allowed to stand for a couple of weeks before planting. We will alternate plantings, making sure we do not grow the same vegetables in the same beds as last year.

Our members are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and inviting, a place to come and work, as well as welcoming visitors who often come down to have a look at our garden. The HOG community is a friendly group that offers people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden.

Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additionally, they also attend the garden throughout the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off-Leash Dog Park. Membership fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for a family, and $10 for juniors. Visit www.hog.org.au, search for "The Hills Organic Garden" on Facebook, or phone 0415 856 532 for information. We look forward to meeting you.

Friendship through Gardening

Autumn Gardening in the Sub-Tropics

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

As the sweltering heat of summer begins to wane, gardeners in the sub-tropics eagerly welcome the arrival of Autumn—a season that brings relief and an opportunity to revitalize outdoor spaces. This month, we bring you ideas to help embrace the beauty of change in your green haven.

Choosing the Right Plants:

The milder temperatures and reduced humidity (thank goodness!) of Autumn in South-East Queensland create optimal conditions for certain plant varieties. Consider introducing flowering plants such as marigolds, pansies and snapdragons, which thrive in the moderate climate.

Soil Enrichment:

Autumn presents an excellent opportunity to nourish the soil in preparation for the upcoming growing season. Adding organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, will enrich the soil and improve its structure. This soil preparation sets the stage for vibrant and flourishing gardens in the months to come.

Embracing Autumnal Colours:

An update from the Stafford Garden Club

Garden beds in Spring at HOG

The Stafford Garden Club has started 2024 with a flourish. On Thursday, 7th of March we are off on a garden ramble to see local gardens and to enjoy morning tea. Then we will be planning the bus trip to Kalbar for the Sunflower Festival on 19th of April. The speaker for March 21st is a representative from Rocky Point, manufacturers of premium quality potting mixes for nurseries, farmers and home gardeners. As we get to the end of our moist summer, now is the time to plan new things in the garden. If you can remove weeds before they set seed, you’ll save yourself years of weeding. We meet at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St, Kedron. We meet at 9.30am for Morning Tea, to buy from the plant stall and to admire the exhibits on the bench. The meeting starts at 10am. Visitors and new members are welcome. Find us on Facebook at Stafford Garden Club Brisbane. Our email is staffordgardenclub@gmail.com

While the sub-tropics may not experience the dramatic colour changes of deciduous trees, Autumn still brings an opportunity to introduce a spectrum of hues to the garden. Choose plants with vibrant foliage or flowers in shades of red, orange, and yellow to create a visually stunning display. Popular choices include crotons, coleus, and ornamental grasses.

Autumn gardening in the sub-tropics offers a unique and rewarding experience for enthusiasts. By selecting appropriate plants, enriching the soil and embracing the vibrant colors of the season, gardeners can create a lush and thriving haven that celebrates the beauty of change in this distinctive climatic region.

Our next meeting at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (entrance via Trundle St) will be on Thursday 4 April at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Entry is $5.00 and morning tea is provided. Visitors are most welcome. Feel free to contact us via email at mitcheltongc@gmail.com or find us on Facebook @ mitcheltongardenclub.

Samford Road Upgrades

THE FERNY REPORT

The intersection upgrade on the outbound lane of Samford Road which will create a right-hand turning pocket into Glen Holm Street in Mitchelton will commence in March. Once complete, this will improve the flow of afternoon peak traffic as motorists will no-longer be held up by one or two cars waiting to turn right into Glen Holm.

Samford Road in Ferny Hills from Lomandra to Camp Mountain Road is about receive a major safety upgrade starting in February or March this year. The works will include road resurfacing, additional guardrails, shoulder widening, wide centreline treatments to reduce the potential for headon crashes, drainage improvements, green infrastructure installations and lighting and concrete islands at the Camp Mountain Road intersection.

Together these two upgrades for Samford Road represent a $25 million investment in congestion-busting and safety improvements for our community. I campaigned hard for these investments and I’m proud to see the work commencing. Both projects will be completed by early 2025 – weather permitting.

UTI Treatment at participating pharmacies

Queenslanders are now able to access advice and treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) through their local participating community pharmacy. This represents a nation-leading expansion in access to healthcare, and it means

Congratulations to Ken and the staff of the newest Bakery & Café in our community – Little Uncle Bakery at Ferny Grove Shopping Village. Fantastic food, great coffee and excellent service!

Queenslanders won’t have to suffer the painful symptoms of a UTI while waiting for a doctor’s appointment.

School Results

Queensland has seen the highest result for Year 12 State School students since 2008. Last year 98.7 per cent of Queensland’s Year 12 State School students achieved their Certificate of Education or a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement. Our record investment in education is delivering for our students and for Queensland’s future economy.

Local School hall tenders announced shortly

The major upgrade to Patricks Road State School hall will get underway soon with the tender for the builder expected to be announced in March. The hall upgrade will include a new performance stage, multi-purpose arts and music spaces, storerooms, an undercroft area, a multi-purpose room and lift and stair access to the undercroft and the oval.

Oakleigh State School’s hall project has picked up again with the Education Department calling for tenders to complete the multi-purpose hall in the Ashgrove-based Primary School. Last year the Lloyd Group, who were working on the project, went into administration with the majority of the project yet to be completed. I welcome the news a new construction company will soon pick up where Lloyd left off and deliver the hall Oakleigh needs.

Both hall projects are expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2025 school year and represent another $20 million investment into our local schools – bringing the total invested in our local schools to over $80 million since I was elected in 2015. And we’re not done yet!

MAKING ENOGGERA WARD AN EVEN BETTER PLACE TO LIVE

Congestion Busting

We recognise the demand that the State controlled South Pine Road & Samford Road traffic puts on the local area. Brisbane City Council is committed to busting congestion and improving traffic safety and efficiency. We are working hard toward a network solution.

Council is delivering two congestion busting projects in Enoggera Ward. The first location is the Sussex Street and Osborne Road intersection which will focus on improving travel flow and operational efficiency at the intersection, taking pressure off Northmore St.

The second location is the Shand St and Sicklefield Road intersection. This project will include changes to line marking treatments to improve queuing capacity on Sicklefield Road. Also, a review of the left and right turn movements at the signalised intersection. Council expects these changes will improve travel flow and operational efficiency at the intersection.

The works within this Congestion Busting Program will go some way towards responding to these concerns while improving safety and travel time reliability in a cost-effective way.

Outdoor Cinema in the Suburbs

In February, Council hosted a free Movie in the Park event

at Dorrington Park. Thank you to the Bunya Lions for their supporting in hosting a sausage sizzle at the event. It was wonderful to see so many families utilising the park facilities and making the most of the outdoor movie experience.

Local Businesses

The Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and I visited Blackwood Street and engaged with some of the local business owners and reaffirming the City Council‘s commitment to supporting small businesses in the community.

Everton Electorate School Leader Inductions

Congratulations to all the 2024 School Leaders from Enoggera State School, Everton Park State School and Everton Park State High School who were recently inducted into their roles. It is a honour and a pleasure to be involved in some of these ceremonies to see the future leaders supporting their schools and taking their responsibilities seriously. I wish them every success.

What’s Happening in Parliament

Last week was the first parliamentary sitting for 2024.

LNP Opposition focused their questions on the youth crime crisis and the increased electricity charges Queenslanders have been hit with.

The LNP has been pressuring the state Labor government to ensure there are consequences for criminal actions. The alleged murder at Redbank Plain shopping centre has sent shockwaves through all communities. Action must be taken now. The independent auditor-general recently reported that

the failure at the Callide Power station nearly 3 years ago is a contributing factor to the increased electricity costs we are all experiencing. It’s imperative that the state government gets cracking in fixing this breakdown as soon as possible to help relieve the cost-of-living pressures Queenslanders are currently experiencing.
