Isolation, not Abandonment

This saying has manifested into the core ethos of a new movement that has arrived on our doorstep called ‘To the Streets’. This community initiative has taken our region by storm and is the brainchild of The Hills Collective - a group of individuals that collaborate in order to enrich the Hills District and beyond.

‘To the Streets’ has been created in direct response to the COVID 19 crisis. It aims to unite our community in the face of adversity and demonstrate support on a street level. With the current social distancing and self-isolation measures locked in place, this may help combat feelings of solitude or abandonment within our neighbourhood. The movement enables neighbours to connect and look out for each other during these tough times by encouraging communication through an online medium in the form of a private street Facebook group. From there, neighbours can easily communicate with each other. Perhaps this could involve offering practical help to others, including helping to tidy gardens, taking out the bins or picking up medicine/groceries. Perhaps it may only be simple praises to encourage each other to soldier on during this pandemic. Either way, the platform is especially helpful to the vulnerable members of our society, such as the elderly. By signing your street up, you receive a ‘Starter Pack’ that consists of advice on how to safely create a private Facebook Group for your street, along with flyers (shown on the right) that can be deposited into letterboxes on your street, inviting your neighbours to the group and offering your contact details. In addition, a bucket of chalk is included to get the kids off to

a flying start by bringing colour to the neighbourhood in the form of chalk artworks on pavements and driveways! Already, this movement has spread its wings across the Hills District and Surrounds lightning fast. So fast, that by the time we went to press, a mammoth 60 streets had registered! If you are looking to ignite a spark of hope and support within our local community, sign your street up now at www. aranahills.church/to-the-streets.html You can also follow the movement on social media via www. facebook.com/to.the.streets.australia (Facebook) or www. instagram.com/to.the.streets (Instagram)

ANZAC Tribute - 2020

Lighting Up The Dawn

It was an Anzac Day dawn like no other in The Hills District and across Australia this Anzac Day.

With all official mass gatherings cancelled due to COVID-19, people were encouraged to stand on their doorstep and ‘light up the dawn’. Here we have some great shots of local residents paying their respects to our fallen in and around The Hills District. Lest We Forget. ANZAC Tribute - 2020

ANZAC Spirit- Upholding the Legacy

Although Anzac Day 2020 has passed, we thought it would be appropriate to publish this informative and thought provoking message from Mark Orreal, President of the Samford RSL. In this message, he likens how we can all apply and learn from the Anzac Spirit in dealing with the COVID crisis in one way or another today.

I wonder, if there were any ANZACs alive today, what they would make of the current Pandemic the world is facing?

I imagine our ANZACs would be able to relate to being thrust into a situation that is out of our control. I imagine they’d also respect the orders for social isolation, if that is what it takes to beat the enemy. I imagine they would not like the fact that everyone – men, women and children - are in this battle together against an invisible enemy, no matter where they are in the world. Our ANZACs fought a war from afar, trusting that their loved ones were safe back home, so I imagine they would struggle with the frontier being just beyond their front door. I also imagine they’d struggle with the inactivity and not being able to tackle the enemy head-on; they’d be bored and restless, wanting to act. I imagine they would be in disbelief that we turned on each other for the sake of toilet paper! Without doubt, they’d be in awe of the doctors, nurses, ambos, and orderlies who are once again on the front line, helping us all win a battle that we hope is winnable. They’d be horrified to think that our wonderful medicos are being treated in any way other than with total respect.

www.hillsecho.com

Sadly, they are not here to confirm or deny my musings. Regardless, I feel assured that they’d want the ANZAC Spirit – the Spirit that they fought so hard for - to live on, through us, in every individual response to this Pandemic. The ANZAC spirit is not about the battle; it is about how we conduct ourselves in unthinkable circumstances we’d rather not be in. The ANZAC characteristics in my mind are mateship, teamwork (even in isolation), bravery, doing what you say you are going to do, putting your mates first, looking out for others, facing challenges head-on, being reliable and sometimes doing what you don’t want to do. At this unthinkable time, I urge everyone to adopt the ANZAC spirit as we act together to protect our communities, to heed the advice and take responsibility. Please remember that ANZAC day is significant because the courage shown by our ANZACs on that day and throughout the Gallipoli campaign symbolised the beginning of our true national identity. Who we are as a nation was built from the ANZAC spirit - their unbelievable courage and endurance against the greatest of odds. They became ‘ANZAC legends’ because they were sent into an unwinnable situation and they fought gallantly and heroically and put ANZAC mateship eternally on the international map. We will know we have won, when we’ve found a vaccine and, more importantly, can say our ANZACs would be proud of how we met the challenge. Lest we forget. Mark Orreal, Presdient, Samford RSL

New Novel Hitting the Streets by local author! The sheer number of talented youngsters we have in our community is incredible and Georgia Wright from Arana Hills is one of them. At the young age of 16 years old she has successfully brought her dream of writing and producing a novel to a reality.

You may remember Georgia from the July 2019 edition of Arana Hills local, Georgia The Hills Echo, in which she Wright - author of Love Hurts wrote an article about the silverlinings in our community. Since the ripe age of thirteen, Georgia has shown extreme dedication to her dream and snatched every sliver of free time to work on bringing the world of her novel to life. This month, she is thrilled to announce that the fruit of her labour is ready for harvest. Her book ‘Love Hurts’ has hit the streets! Under the category of Young Adult fiction, Love Hurts follows the tale of a wallflower, Maddie Garcia, who finds herself thrown into the eye of a social whirlwind. Whilst chasing after the boy who makes her heart flutter, she simultaneously battles to find her feet and avoid treading on anyone’s toes. Along the way, Maddie discovers exactly why love hurts. ‘I’ll never forget the night Maddie Garcia wandered into my mind, carrying on her shoulders a story of fleeting romance and self-growth, which I began writing the very next day,’ explains Georgia.

‘The novel’s construction wasn’t always a breeze. However, watching the puzzle pieces of Love Hurts slot together to form an incredible final product sure made every second worthwhile. Maddie will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I hope she’ll soon hold a place in yours!’ To read more, grab your copy from amazon.com.au (through Amazon Kindle) or via https://inhousebookstore. com.au/products/love-hurts For further details visit Georgia's Instagram page @ georgiawrightwrites or email georgiawright@iprimus. com.au

How to get a Wasp’s nest to buzz off! from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

Until the restrictions in connection to the Coronavirus are lifted, meetings of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club have been cancelled. When it is possible to resume normal activities, the club will continue to meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on the first Thursday of each calendar month (except January). The contact number for phone enquiries is 3356 1256.

While some of your usual routine may have been interrupted, giving attention to gardening remains important. Be aware that wasps are active just now. They are building nests in places that provide shelter, such as eaves or steps or arching branches. Just a slight disturbance near a nest releases a fury of attacking insects, so be aware of danger. Should you notice a nest, keep clear of it until the wasps are drowsy. In the early morning or at dusk, spray them with an insect spray. Keep well away until there is no more activity, then destroy the nest. Sometimes the wasps will rebuild in the same area, so be vigilant at all times. By now, spring flowering bulbs and annuals should all be planted into prepared garden beds which should be well mulched to keep the soil warm and moist. One example is a Cyclamen. These plants are like a substitute for a bunch of flowers and the expectation of saving the bulbs to replant next year are too good to be true. However, to extend their life, regularly remove spent blooms and leaves and place the pot plant outside in the cold night air. In addition, Cyclamens do not require a lot of water.

David Robert Livett

In very sad news, President of the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. Dave Livett passed away on 8 March 2020 after a year-long battle with liver cancer. He was aged 80.

Dave was born on 16 April 1939 in London, England – on the eve of World War II commencing. He would often comment in later years that some of his earliest memories as a boy was him and his family enduring German bombing raids, and coping with war-time David Livett restrictions, during those dark days of the 1940s. UNUSUAL HOBBIES ‘MATCHWORK’ by Donald Willsher

Edition One

When my mother died, I was very young. We had a to set too many matches at one housekeeper whose husband made coffee tables with time as they will move! match designs as the top. If any readers are interested in Many years later, when I was laid up with a carbuncle for a couple of weeks and looking for something to do, I remembered the matchwork and made a tray during that time. That was in the early 1960’s. Since then, I estimate that I have made more than 40 coffee tables or trays and more recently, I have turned to pictures and clocks and have even replicated a wedding photo. By invitation, I have exhibited my work at ‘Working With Wood’ shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra in 2014 and 2015. My wife and I spent nearly 14 years full time in a caravan travelling and this was an ideal hobby for those times as it requires no workshop, simply a folding table, some matches, scraper blades and some glue! I only use Redheads and for a time, Woolworths Home Brand Matches. Home Brand matches were made in Indonesia from a brown timber and were thus good for obtaining contrast without having to stain the matches as seen in this chessboard. Two of the major works were made during the years we were travelling—the village of Donnsville and a picture of a wolf (top right image). More on these in later editions. To anyone interested in getting started in this hobby, I suggest keeping to simple designs until you develop your skills and techniques. Geometric designs are easiest as you only have to worry about straight lines and edges—no curves! Another tip is to make sure you do NOT use too much glue and don’t try

‘Telephone Trees’ branching out support locally

Out & About with the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club - By Paul Ryan As a significant community service organisation in the Hills District, the Golden Valley Keperra Lions (GVK) have a large number of members in the most vulnerable Covid-19 age group. We are keenly aware that ‘Social Distancing’ is extremely important.

What this means for our club is that instead of face to face meetings, most communication is completed by email – which is extremely efficient but also extremely impersonable! No matter our age or position in life that being of a mum, dad, child, grandfather, grandmother, working, not working, retired or something in between, we all have feelings and a burning desire to feel needed and valued. With this in mind, the GVK Lions have started an old fashioned ‘Telephone Tree’, where our members phone a number of other members and simply ask ‘RUOK’ (are you ok) and is there anything I can do for you? You will be amazed how rewarding this exercise can be as it can provide; personal touch, verbal interaction along with a feeling of hope, security and connectedness for both the caller and the recipient. So, while social distancing means we cannot touch or be in close contact with others, we can still be social over the phone. Why not make a list of your family and friends that may be isolated in these current times and give them a call? You will be amazed how mutually beneficial this will be. Remember, if you cannot help your friend or family member, contact your local Lions club who will be able to assist. Email gvk@lionsq3.org.au or call Paul Ryan on 0409 688 675.

Boardgame Nostalgia From the Enoggera and Districts Historical Society

However, who out there also remembers Risk, Squatter, The Game of Life, Pay Day or Poleconomy (being played above)? What about Rum Rebellion, Test match, Scotland Yard, Lose Your Shirt, Buccaneers or Park and Shop? The Enoggera and Districts Historical Society would love to hear peoples’ memories of playing boardgames indoors from years gone by. Visit our Facebook page and post a photo of a game (if you still have it!) and write a comment about what made the experience so special. Please remember, while the society has had to postpone a number of activities for the foreseeable future, you can still stay in touch by emailing enoggerahistory@gmail.com or visiting our website www.enoggerahistory.org Take care everyone, Andrew McMicking, President

Boardgames are a great chance for the family to bond. Here are some local youngsters enjoying Poleconomy

With current COVID-19 restrictions in place, and the community needing to stay indoors for much of the time, who else out there is reaching for a good old-fashioned boardgame? It is a great opportunity to bond with the family and, in the process, bring back some lovely memories of years gone by! There’s a few famous staples we all know and love, and indeed grew up with – such as Monopoly, Scrabble and Cluedo.

The Hills Players

Forty years and oh so fabulous!

The Hills Players look forward to treading the boards again Although The Hills Players can’t report on current events due to the Corona restrictions, their archivist, Ann Johnston has shared this wonderful submission. It is an article that appeared in The Hills Echo back in March 2000 about how they began! The Hills Players Inc has been providing good family entertainment in the Hills District for 20 years and they're still going strong! The amateur group was formed in 1980 at Ferny Hills State School with the idea of using the amenities hall as their home. At that time the hall was not completed but it was soon realised that it would not be suitable for the type of theatre the group was performing. It would also be beyond the Players' means as a struggling group of players to meet the fees asked. The Players then moved to The Hills Neighbourhood Centre at James Drysdale Reserve, but this was also unsuitable. The first production was staged at the Arana Hills Community Centre (Bargo Street) where the players had to erect their own stage using school drama boxes and offcuts of carpet and Players dressed in a caravan (all in together) outside the back door. The programme was shared with a local dancing school and it was quite a success. The Hills Players were off and running! Fortunately, Father Daley at St. Williams Catholic Church was sympathetic to our plight and offered St. Williams at a very nominal rental. The old church was to be our home with a stage being built by parishioners and husbands of the theatre group members. Father Daley even brought in some old theatre seats he‘d acquired from one of the theatres in town which was being renovated and the Players thought they were just ‘it’! The original aim for The Hills Players was to perform affordable live theatre to their district. This is still the case and they will be back treading the boards once the world is well again.

Ellendale offers virtual house and land experience

A range of virtual tools have launched for those considering purchasing a homesite or house and land package at the Ellendale community at Upper Kedron, allowing them to view the community, sales centre and home designs from the comfort of their current home.

While the Ellendale Sales Centre and Display Village remains open by appointment-only, new technology means prospective homebuyers can chat to the team over video or phone call and can choose to take a 'virtual' tour of the streetscapes and homesites from their own devices via a new platform on the Ellendale website. The new technology has launched as the latest stages, Silver Leaf and Myrtle, reach completion, meaning buyers wanting to secure a homesite that is ready-to-build on now have a range of titled lots to choose from. The final homesites are also now selling in the community's boutique Cedar Glen release, where house and land packages are available from just $579,700, providing an entry level option for those stepping into the market or rightsizing to a low maintenance home. Peter Starr, Senior Development Manager at Cedar Woods, which is developing Ellendale, said they are continuing to receive strong enquiry for the homesites, with buyers recognising the opportunity to buy a homesite now and be able to construct a home and move in before Christmas 2020. ‘The enquiry for homesites at Ellendale remains strong, with buyers finding they have more time at the moment to put into researching the right community, lot and builder for them,’ he said. ‘They are looking to connect with the sales team to answer their questions and guide them through the process and our focus is on ensuring we continue to deliver the same great customer experience, even if it is virtually, in the current environment. ‘We have just finished construction on our latest releases, which means new homes are about to start construction very soon and those who want to secure titled land, where they can start building whenever they are ready, now have more options available to them at Ellendale.’ Mr Starr said Ellendale featured both traditional lots and split and sloping homesites, which provided the opportunity to create bespoke homes that benefited from expansive views across the surrounding national bushland and captured cooling breezes. Homesites now available at Ellendale range from 359sqm to 760sqm and are priced from $355,000, with lots in the boutique Cedar Glen release sized from 319sqm and priced from $305,000. Local pharmacy offers tailored treatment for menopause relief

A new treatment approach is bringing menopause relief in Keperra.

For many women, menopause symptoms like disrupted sleep, irritability and weight gain feel like they’re taking over – putting women in the back seat when it comes to making choices about how they live their life. Worse still, traditional treatment options are limited and often ineffective. But, thanks to a new way of thinking offered by Keperra Compounding Pharmacy, help is at hand. ‘The simplest way to explain it is: our bodies are all different, and menopause impacts every woman differently. So, it makes sense that we each need unique treatment options’ said Pharmacist and Menopause Consultant, Tahnee Simpson. ‘Menopause disrupts the careful balance of hormones in your body. That imbalance is what creates those frustrating symptoms, which can negatively impact women at home, at work and particularly in their relationships. ‘The specific balance of hormones is unique to each person, which is why generic solutions often prescribed don’t work for everyone. ‘By taking the time to understand how menopause is affecting the individual person, we can play a role in offering a personalised treatment program that addresses their unique needs and the unique hormone balance their body is craving.’ Working alongside a local doctor experienced in supporting women who are struggling with their menopause symptoms, the Keperra pharmacy has already helped a number of locals to regain balance and vitality.

‘We’re lucky as a compounding pharmacy, we can work with a doctor to create personalised treatments to meet each patient’s unique needs.’ ‘I’m so passionate about helping the women in our community. If nothing else, I want every woman to know you don’t have to suffer through menopause. If the one-size-fits-all treatment options you’ve been offered in the past (like antidepressants, herbal remedies or sleep aids) haven’t worked, then consider looking at treatment approaches that focus more specifically on you and your body’s needs.’ ‘You’re unique, your treatment should be too!’ For more information or to book a free consultation, visit the store at 10 Dallas Parade, Keperra; or visit compoundingpharmacy.com.au/menopause

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, Jane and I have been the best of friends for the past 13 years. Last September Susie and her family moved onto our street. I did the neighbourly thing, invited them over, introduced her to our friends and in particular Jane. Jane and I invited Susie out with us regularly, but soon it became obvious to me that Susie was Jane’s new best friend. They started going out together and leaving me out. Susie would always let me know where they had been together. I have been terribly hurt by this but thought in time the novelty would wear off and things would normalize. Two weeks ago though Susie came and told me something very personal and private that had happened to Jane a few years ago. Something Jane has never told me, yet she told Susie. Susie finished the tale by saying “Jane told me in confidence and made me promise I would not tell anyone but I thought you as her friend should know. Again I am extremely hurt and even feel betrayed to think that Jane trusted Susie above me. I feel really concerned for Jane’s reputation because if Susie will tell me and break Jane’s confidence who else will she tell? I don’t know what to do. As Jane’s friend should I warn her? If Jane challenges Susie about this, will that cheese Susie off and make her more liable to gossip? Or will the thing happen that I am really afraid of, the messenger, me, will get put into the middle and shot? I really don’t want to lose Jane’s friendship. Gaye Dear Gaye, As you can now most certainly testify, secrets, because they cross boundaries cause a huge amount of damage. Sharing of confidences is an age old human way of bonding and cementing friendship. When confidences become ‘secrets’ that can be used to manipulate, divide and conquer as you are experiencing here, they are treacherous. Now you feel you have been forced into a position where you think you have to sort their mess out. Did you let Susie know as soon as she said it was a ‘don’t tell’ secret, that you did not think it was appropriate for Susie to be breaking Jane’s confidence even with you.?The issue that you have to sort out for yourself alone is why you want to do what you want to do. For example, you want to tell 1. Because she will find out what a mistake she made choosing Susie above you (motive, revenge/validation.) 2. Because you are genuinely concerned for Jane and think she should know. Your action may be the same but it is your intention that is all important. Alternatively you could choose to remain silent. a. because of the consequences you fear ie. Confrontation, loss, manipulation etc. My question here is, how good is this friendship you are valuing above your peace of mind and integrity? Is it worth it? What do you have to learn from this about your own self value? b. Because you have succeeded in letting go of the hurt and have reached a place in yourself where you no longer take their stuff as a personal attack on your self worth and are prepared to let it go and let them sort it out. If you come from this place you could be surprised at what you may say to either party and what you are prepared to let go of.

I can do it! Building Independence

‘I did it!’ may have been familiar words for you and your child during their toddler years.

Do you remember the joy they experienced when doing something for themselves? Perhaps, even the look of persistence and determination on their face? At Kindy, we like to encourage that independence and persistence when children participate in various aspects of the kindy day. In these changed times when many children are staying home, encouraging independence becomes particularly important. ‘All in this together’ is a very familiar phrase. During family conversations, deciding on who could do what household jobs could be a way that each family member feels a sense of responsibility and means of helping each other. Initially, children may need a little support to try something new. However, with each passing week, children will become increasingly independent with these tasks. Everything new takes time to become familiar and a part of the everyday. What joy to see children beam with pride as they move towards doing these tasks more independently. As children master new routines and skills, they see themselves as capable and competent. It builds an ‘I can’ attitude. Sometimes it’s hard for adults to resist the urge to do things

But, if we want to build the ‘I can’ attitude, we need to allow children to do things for themselves. Dispositions such as independence, having-a-go at something new, persistence and resilience are foundational for a successful transition into school and for life. When the Covid 19 pandemic resulted in schools providing the opportunity for ‘Learning From Home’, Mount Alvernia was ready for action. Parents were provided with easy-toread guidelines on what this would look like, students had the chance to trial their specific environments, and teachers ensured that they were ready to utilise the already present online platforms that were available. The staff at Mount Alvernia understands the need to continue to offer quality education, no matter what the circumstances are. Our response to the pandemic shows that the importance of enabling all students to continue to achieve at their best is not under-estimated. We have ensured that students are looking at the positives this experience has brought, noting that reinforcing self-motivation, time management, and resilience will augur well for future endeavours. Our vibrant community is thriving, with a variety of initiatives. The Community Zone on our college intranet provides students, families, and staff ideas and ways to keep physically and mentally healthy, stay connected, and have fun during this unusual time. The Book Bus allows students to order resources online which are then delivered and collected from three central locations weekly. This occurs in a safe, contactless environment. We, of course, look forward to welcoming our students back on campus when it is safe to do so, and also to welcoming prospective members of our community on-site. In the meantime, if you would like to attend a ‘Meet the Principal’ online session or obtain further information about the College, please contact Camilla Horn at the College (hornc@mta.qld. edu.au; ph 3357 6000).

Our vision is to develop and support young women to live their faith in today’s world, commit to life-long personal and intellectual growth, care for the earth and all of humankind, work towards justice for all, and build community wherever life takes them. You are warmly invited to join us for a private tour or one of the Meet the Principal events throughout the year. Please email Camilla Horn at enrolments@mta.qld.edu. au, or go to mta.qld.edu.au/visit-us, to schedule your visit. 82 Cremorne Road, Kedron Ph 3357 6000

from the Arana Hills & Districts Senior Citizens Club Inc

PLASTERER

As we have suspended all activities due to the COVID-19 crisis, we thought that we would send through a brief history of our local club. On the 4th August 1980 a small group of over 50’s booked the Hill’s District Community Centre for what was the beginning of the Arana Hills & Districts Senior Citizens Cluc Inc. The club has never looked back with hundreds of seniors having utilized the club since it was born. Many of the members come from Ferny Grove, Mitchelton, Enoggera, Everton Park, Albany Creek, Stafford, Bardon as well as the Hills Area. Meetings are held every Friday from 10am to noon. Activities included Bingo, Hoy and Beetles to name but a few. Occasionally, concerts take place along with talks on various topics, for example the RACQ and Vision Aids. A card group also plays every Friday. On Wednesday and Friday afternoons there is the opportunity to play indoor Mat Bowls from 1pm to 3pm. During the year members can also enjoy bus trips to destinations such as the Darling Downs Zoo, Majestic Theatre and Pomona. Furthermore, there are also three or four day trips to Stanthorpe & Tenterfield, Lightning Ridge, Kingaroy, to name a few. We wish a speedy recovery to all of our sick members. Please give us a call if you need any further information. Till next time, Mike 0406 601 589

ANZAC DAY

Anzac Day brings back great memories for me and whilst we were unable to gather this ANZAC Day, this year was one of the most moving ANZAC Day’s I’ve been involved in. My Dad served in the Navy during WW2 and every year, my family would attend the annual parade at Gaythorne RSL Club. This year, instead, thousands of us lit up the dawn together Laying a wreath on behalf of the by standing at the end of our driveway, or community I represent. Lest We Forget. living room, to remember those who served. Neighbours all along my street paid their respects with the Last Post echoing around the suburb. Haunting but poignant. Thank you again to those we gave so much for our country and to those who continue to serve. RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY PROTECTIONS Recently, the Palaszczuk Labor Government announced a Renter Protections Package that would significantly disadvantage landlords and sections of the property industry. These new tenancy laws were completely unfair and imbalanced. The LNP worked closely with stakeholders, including the REIQ, to secure a fairer framework and together we launched a strong campaign against the State Labor Government. I am happy to say, the Government relented and a more balanced bill was passed in parliament to ensure there are protections for both landlords and tenants. Local school improvements continue

I am pleased to report all the State Schools in the Ferny Grove Electorate are now fully air conditioned with the final units being installed in mid-April. Furthermore, the Department of Education is taking advantage of fewer people on our school campuses at present to go all out to complete the planned works at our local high schools. Mitchelton State High School is the site of a major new IT lab with major renovations to basketball courts, the school hall and its aging canteen. Ferny Grove State High School, meanwhile, will be home to a 2,000+ seat performing arts and sports complex which will enable the school to host major events as well as a whole-of-school assembly. Bryant Building Contractors are doing an amazing job in

I was excited to receive a report from AFL Queensland that the new change rooms have been fabricated by Brisbane company Ausco and will shortly be installed at the Ferny Grove Sports Fields. While the AFL has spearheaded the project, the multi-use change rooms will be used by all sports on site and have been designed to meet the Australian standards for both male and female use by all codes. When sports resume at the Ferny Grove Sporting Fields Cricket, Hockey, Netball and AFL will have a new facility ready and waiting to be used.

Dickson News from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

A Message from Peter

Thank you to everyone in our community who commemorated ANZAC Day this year. Although we were not able to attend the services like other years, many in our community rallied to commemorate ANZAC Day at home. It was fantastic to see so many photos online of people in our community on their driveway with candles participating in the RSL’s Light Up the Dawn campaign or others baking ANZAC biscuits to commemorate ANZAC Day. Thank you for supporting our veterans and serving defence force members. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you. Peter

The JobKeeper Package

The Federal Government passed the JobKeeper package through the Parliament on 8 April 2020; it is the biggest economic lifeline in Australia’s history. The JobKeeper program will help Australia weather an economic storm, by keeping Australians in jobs and keeping businesses in business. Over the next six months, an estimated six million eligible workers will be supported, with payments of $1,500 per employee, per fortnight before tax, paid through their employers. Already, around 750,000 businesses have registered for JobKeeper. By keeping this connection between employers and workers, we will help our economy bounce back. JobKeeper payments will be available to full-time and parttime workers, sole traders and casuals who have been with

Page 32 - May 2020, The Hills Echo

their employer for more than 12 months. Business turnovers will need to have fallen by 30 per cent or more to be eligible for the payment. If you would like to find out more please go to https://treasury. gov.au/coronavirus. This is part of our ongoing economic plan to ensure the livelihoods of Australians are protected during and after the coronavirus crisis. For the latest information and updates on COVID-19, please visit Australia.gov.au.

You Can Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19 by:

• Using a range of social distancing and hygiene measures. • Refraining from hand shakes and other close contact, and standing 1.5m from each other wherever possible. • Practicing good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitiser that contains at least 60 per cent alcohol. • Not touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow. • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily. • Staying home if you are sick and don’t expose others. If you are unwell with flu-like symptoms, do not go outside your property or home, do not go to work, school or shops unless it is essential. • Getting vaccinated for influenza this season. It is not yet known whether COVID-19 could significantly increase the risk of influenza infection.

NEW JOBKEEPER PAYMENT TO KEEP AUSTRALIANS IN JOBS The $130 billion JobKeeper Payment will help keep Australians in jobs as we tackle the significant economic impact from Coronavirus. The payment will be open to eligible businesses that have been significantly impacted by Coronavirus. The payment will provide the equivalent of around 70 per cent of the national median wage. For workers in the accommodation, hospitality and retail sectors it will equate to a full median replacement wage. The payment will ensure eligible employers and employees stay connected while some businesses move into hibernation so that they can both bounce back stronger on the other side. Providing an historic wage subsidy to around six million workers Workers will receive a flat payment of $1,500per fortnight Ensuring employers and employees stay connected during this time Eligible businesses can apply for the payment online at ato.gov.au

Q Print and Signs

COVID-19 STORE STATUS - YES, we are still open! We will still be operating as normal from Wednesday March 25. With respect to the social distancing, we will be limiting the customer waiting area to no more than 5 customers at a time. We have closed the middle cash register to ensure we maintain the required space, so wait times may be slightly longer, and we would appreciate card payments where possible. Continual cleaning of the shop will continue to ensure the health of our staff & customers where possible. We are deeply saddened though that some of our business customers will be ceasing trading (either temporarily or permanently) with these latest measures imposed by the government. If you are an affected business by having to close, or require the social distancing signage printed, we are happy to assist. Where possible, we'll still stock what supplies of cleaning products & sanitisers from our suppliers as stock becomes available. Please make special note that if you feel the price is too high, please do not blame (or name) us, as we put very little (generally 5-10% markup on these products to assist with wages of serving you, we certainly aren't doing this for the money). This markup is considerably less than our standard stocked lines, and is more of a convenience for you, our loyal customers. The considerable increase in cost is originated from the manufactures of the alcohol & bottles/tubes, of whom the blame & naming should be directed to. I will endevour to keep all informed as new information comes to light in regards to any service amendments to Q PRINT & SIGNS. Ph: 3351 5554 www.qpas.com.au
