Everton Park High Turns 60!
An update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. By Andrew McMicking, President
New Car Park for The Prince Charles Hospital
A new publicly owned carpark is coming to The Prince Charles Hospital!
The Society would like to send a special 'shout out' this month to the wonderful Everton Park State High School – which turns 60 years young in 2021! The school was originally gazetted in September 1960 as the Stafford State High School. It was renamed in December that year to Everton Park State High School and opened to students – at its location on Stafford Road – on 23 January 1961. Over the years the school has been home to some notable students, including Oscar winner and former Australian of the Year, Geoffrey Rush, rugby league identities Paul Vautin and Adrian Lam, professional squash players Michelle and Rodney Martin, and former bass player with the Masters Apprentices and John Farnham manager, Glenn Wheatley. On Saturday, 31st July the school will have its official 60th anniversary celebrations (see advertisement on page 6). For more information about the Enoggera and Districts Historical Society visit www.enoggerahistory.org
The 2021 Queensland Budget confirms that funding has been secured and planning works will begin in this financial year. This carpark is expected to finish construction and open in 2023, supporting 248 local jobs. At the time of going to press, the number of parking spaces and exact location is yet to be determined. Visiting the hospital for treatment or to see a sick or injured loved one is stressful enough, let alone having to worry about paying large amounts for parking or trying to find a carpark in the busy area. It is great news to hear that under the new system, parking costs will reduce from $22 for stays longer than two hours, to $13 for stays longer than six hours.
New Library for Everton Park!
Have you heard? Under the 2021/22 Budget, Brisbane City Council has announced the delivery of a new library for Everton Park. Stay tuned for further news in our upcoming editions of The Everton Echo!

Photo’s Of The Month
Local resident Lyn Matthews captured the beautiful sunset perfectly on a recent evening in Everton Park!
This was photo was supplied by Lynette Sims from Keperra (pictured in red on back of bike). The photo was taken at Elkhorn Street, Enoggera, in 1962. Back then, the streets were still dirt and the kids in the street used to race down the hill on their go carts and bikes - things where so simple back then.
If you have an image you would like to send in for our ‘Photo of the Month’ section, please email it through to admin@ echo-news.com.au. We are welcoming submissions from all genres, from happy snaps to historical pictures to spectacular images. So whatever your interpretation is of what makes a top notch photo, we want to see it!
Send us your views! Dear Editor, In coming months, our 93 state MPs will vote on a proposed law to introduce voluntary assisted dying (VAD). The state government asked the independent and expert Queensland Law Reform Commission to draft a VAD Bill which has now been released and will soon be the subject of scrutiny and feedback by the parliamentary Health Committee before being debated by MPs in September. The QLRC’s report and draft Bill mark a milestone in the long and hard battle to secure VAD laws for Queenslanders. Many people involved with Dying With Dignity Queensland have waged this fight for more than 30 years. Many of them could have benefited from a VAD law but have died long before seeing the latest positive developments in the law reform process. As we continue to push for VAD laws we should remember them. VAD laws have been passed in Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania, and already operate in many places overseas. But there is no guarantee the Queensland Bill will succeed. So all Queenslanders wanting a better choice at the end of life must let their local MP know that they are expecting them to vote for VAD. While MPs will have a conscience vote on the VAD Bill, they should remember that the Bill is not about them. It is about giving terminally ill people or those dying from a neurological condition a voluntary choice to end their intolerable suffering. Voluntary assisted dying will not result in a single extra death but it will mean a lot less suffering. If anyone wants to support our fight, I urge them to visit www.dwdq.org.au or phone 1300 733 818. Regards, Jos Hall, Do you have a letter you would like published? If so, we would love to hear from you! Email your letter to admin@echo-news.com.au or mail to PO Box243, Arana Hills. QLD 4054

Keperra Country Golf Club and Just Better Care announce Partnership
Advertorial
Keperra Country Golf Club (KCGC) has announced a new partnership with Gaythorne-based Just Better Care Brisbane North as part of the Club’s recently launched initiative to connect with the local business community. Just Better Care Brisbane North, founded in 2015 by Managing Director and dual franchise owner Susanne Jones, provides aged care home support services and disability support while operating under the umbrella of global entity Caring Brands International. Ms Jones said as a relatively new business in the region, she was delighted to be partnering with the club, which has a 90year history of community reach and engagement. “I’ve been working to establish strong community connections with organisations like Keperra Country Golf Club which share the values that I embrace and the same outlook in terms of providing education, collaboration and giving back to the community, as the Club does through its charity contributions,” she said. “It’s a very natural evolution for us and we are very excited to be able to have this opportunity.” KCGC General Manager Gavin Lawrence said, “The Club is thrilled to be partnering with Just Better Care Brisbane North, which is part of one of Australia’s largest accredited providers of in-home aged care and disability support. “With their focus on delivering community education and delivering quality outcomes for their clients we believe
KCGC General Manager Gavin Lawrence with Managing Director of Just Better Care Brisbane North, Susanne Jones, they are an ideal partner, and we are fortunate to have them operating within our local community.” Just Better Care Brisbane North has come on board as a Major Partner, one of four levels of Club partnerships available. The Club has also welcomed three Supporting Partners -- longtime supporter Everton Engineering, mobile physiotherapy business Your Physio, and leisure and lifestyle benefits program provider QRI Lifestyle. Mr Lawrence said with so many people affected by COVID-19, the Club’s partnership initiative was a way to help local businesses as they reactivate and provide opportunities for them to let the community know about their services. Golf’s national governing body, Golf Australia, has reported substantial growth in the game’s popularity over the past year, with increases nationwide in club memberships and in the numbers of newcomers taking to courses. The Keperra Club, which has experienced this surge, facilitates more than 90,000 golf rounds each year and is home to more than 1400 members, many of whom live locally. Limited opportunities remain to take up sponsorship packages, with the Club in negotiations with a number of businesses. To find out more about the Club’s exciting offerings, please contact Michael Dash on marketing@keperragolf.com.au or call 3355 7744.

Second Show for The Power of 2021 set to take off! Literacy Framework
Growl Theatre is currently in rehearsals for Boeing Boeing, their second show for 2021.
Directed by Charles Langford and Brendan James, who return to the directors chair following the sold out production of Suddenly Last Summer in 2020. Tickets are already selling, so book soon to avoid missing out. Boeing-Boeing is a classic farce written by the French playwright Marc Camoletti. The English language adaptation, translated by Beverley Cross, was first staged in London at the Apollo Theatre in 1962, and ran for seven years. It was then revived in 2007 in London, and on Broadway in 2008, which won the Tony Award that year for Best Revival of a Play! SYNOPSIS: In this door-slamming comedy, an architect living in Paris has been successfully juggling three flight attendant fiancées with his housekeeper reluctantly playing romantic air-traffic controller as they fly in and out of his swank bachelor pad. But when an old school pal visits, things get rather turbulent. Schedules change, flights are delayed and chaos ensues in this whirl of mayhem and matchmaking. The play will be performed from 13th to 28th August. Commencing at 7.30pm on Friday and Saturdays, Sunday matinee is at 2pm at the Windsor School of Arts, 381 Lutwyche Road, Windsor. Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for concession card holders and $15 per person for groups of six or more. TAX TIME TIPS
from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
It is that time of year where we again turn our focus to doing our dreaded tax returns! If you still have outstanding returns to lodge, please get them done as we have seen in recent weeks the ATO really ramp up activity and following up on outstanding lodgements and outstanding debts. It pays to be compliant. Many individuals choose to do their own returns which is fine, however there is always a risk that the deductions claimed are incorrect or not claimed at all. Briefly to claim a deduction for a work-related expense: • You must have spent the money yourself and not been reimbursed. • The expenses must directly relate to earning your income. • You must have a record to prove it (usually a receipt). If the expense was for both work and private purposes, you only claim a deduction for the work-related part. Work expenses your employer reimburses you for are not deductible. Keep track of the hours you work from home (if you are required to do so), as the COVID short cut rate of 80c per hour has been extended to include this financial year, however you must be able to substantiate the hours you claim. For sole traders, companies, trusts etc the principles are the same; the cost must have been incurred to produce assessable income. It can be a minefield, and if you get it wrong, it can be costly. Accountants fees are tax deductible, so it is worthwhile getting advice.

Limitless Facets to Lapidary News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
There are many aspects to the Lapidary hobby. If someone joins a Lapidary Club they will be amazed at the branches of the hobby which they can be involved in.
Firstly, there is cabochon cutting. This can be either to create a collection of cabochons of various material and sizes or fit the cut stones into ready made jewellery pieces. These ‘findings’, as they are called, come in standard sizes such as 30x40mm and 30x22mm and are available in gold and silver. There is also the option of making your own jewellery from silver wire and silver plate. Then there is slicing collected stones. If they are suitable, polishing the faces of the stones to form a collection. Stone halves need to be perfectly flat and smooth in order to then be polished. Depending on the size of the cut stone, they are generally ground down with silicon carbide grit, starting off with coarse and ending up with fine before being polished on a leather buff with polishing powder. There is also ‘tumbling,’ which are small stones in a barrel with added water and silicon carbide grit. Generally, these barrels are composed of a hard material, like poly, and of at least a 20cm diameter. The barrels rotate on a set of rollers and need to be continuously going for weeks at a time in order to grind the stones smooth. It is advisable to pre-shape your stone to the desired shape you wish the end product to be. Next month we will discuss other aspects of the Lapidary Hobby which you may be interested in. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has its clubrooms located at 46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove and is open every Thursday from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing rocks and from noon to 3pm for silverwork. It is also open on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The Club caters for Gemstone enthusiasts in the North Western region of Brisbane. However, if you feel this type of hobby interests you, do not hesitate to get in touch with John on 3351 1038 who will be only too happy to have a chat to you about the workings of the Club. Warwick Brown
Director Farmer Browns Pizza & The Farm Shack Farmer Brown’s Pizzas, has earnt its title as one of the area’s most popular mobile catering services in The Hills District, but how did it all begin? The answer is Warwick Brown, a man who spent his childhood living the farm life on the outskirts of Dayboro. From chasing cows, to getting chased by cows, to stacking motorbikes and learning how to gracefully fall off horses, Warwick sure made the most of it. The food especially. In the Brown household, meals were always fresh and jam-packed with flavour due to the numerous veggie patches and fruit trees on their doorstep. However, once childhood was over and Warwick had gained experience working in management, he set out to chase his dream of operating his own small business. Pizza was his passion, and Warwick wanted to share it with our community. December 2015 marked the official launch of his fully licensed, mobile wood-fired pizza set up, Farmer Brown’s Pizzas. All the ingredients are fresh as day, some home grown and some sourced locally. With Warwick’s dedication and young driven team, the business has thrived over the past 6 years, enabling the business to not only add 5 trailers to the Farmer Browns fleet, but also to launch a permanent brick and mortar pizza store in Ferny Hills—the Farm Shack. Not to mention, the booming business has since earned itself a pretty significant following. With a menu full of

favourites such as Ham and Pineapple, Margherita, and Pepperoni, to fresh new tongue-tinglers like Pesto Pizza, Tandoori Chicken, and Nutella and Marshmallow, Farmer Browns Pizzas has generated a huge community-wide hype, with 3000 loyal Facebook followers and glowing reviews sprinkling the page. Warwick and his pride-filled staff are renowned for their catering skills, their customer service, their personal interactions with patrons, and their ability to deliver molto bene meals to all. The team usually caters for events such as parties, festivals, special occasions, weddings, and fetes. Their mantra is product and service, strongly believing that if you serve a great product with exceptional service, everybody wins. Clearly, Warwick and his dream have come a long way. Farmer Browns Pizzas is now fortunate enough to be booked out most Saturday nights for a few months in advance and The Farm Shack is thriving. His team of nearly 20 staff are his pride and joy, as they all take so much care in what they do. Best yet, with all his success in the suburbs, Warwick never abandoned his roots; he still lives out at Dayboro with his partner and their 2 cattle dogs, a border collie Kip, and a cat Gus. The Farm Shack is open 4pm-8pm Tuesday to Sunday, and its crew welcome the whole community with open arms—and pizzas galore!

That is one reason why we are awarded the Rate My Agent, Agency of the Year for Everton Park and McDowall so regularly.” Justin has lived all of his life in the area, having grown up in Peppard St in McDowall, and now building his own family with his partner and 2 small boys, still in McDowall. Why Not Practice Tips for a wonderful Yoga at Picabeen? winter garden
Exciting things are happening at Picabeen in July.
Picabeen welcomes Lexi, who is running the second Yoga class at the centre on Mondays at 9.30am. Lexi has shared a little bit about herself and her journey into the disciple of Yoga: ‘I started yoga a few years ago with my yoga teacher - her name is Siobhan. I also did Yoga with my sister and some friends, and I fell in love with it!’ revealed Lexi. ‘I like yoga because it makes me feel happy and safe. My favourite poses are child’s pose and pigeon. I like everything about those poses and the feeling I get inside. My dream job is to teach yoga; it has been a life dream. Now I have finished my teacher training, I want to teach other people, including people with a disability. I want to share the culture of Yoga, teach people and bring joy to everyone else.’ Lexi believes that having Down Syndrome is a special ability to have. People with all abilities are welcome to come to her class which will start on Monday 21st June, 9.30am. People with support workers are also welcome to attend, please call 3354 2555 to reserve your spot. The Tuesday Community BBQ is always popular and helping create networks for those who may feel isolated or vulnerable. It is a great chance to have a hot meal and connect with your local community. Picabeen is seeking volunteers to aid the smooth running of their weekly BBQ. This might include cooking, preparing food, greeting people, setting up/packing away. The BBQ runs at noon on Tuesday and volunteers are usually required for two hours. Picabeen is also delighted to have partnered with a bakery for bread donations. If you have weekend availability, Picabeen is seeking a volunteer to collect the bread and deliver to the centre. It is anticipated that this shall only take an hour of your time. Picabeen is a not-for-profit community organisation supporting locals. The centre is located at 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to Picabeen so they can make a difference in your community.

From the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club
If Covid restrictions are not in force, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on Thursday, 5th August. The guest speaker, Barbara Beerling, will talk about ‘Roses in General’. Barbara is a qualified horticulturalist who specialises in roses, fruit trees, pruning, disease control and plant identification. At this time of year, to maintain steady growth in your garden, apply liquid fertilizer to your vegetables and flowering plants. Look for swelling on branches of citrus trees. This could indicate the presence of the citrus gall wasp and should be pruned away and deposited in the rubbish bin, not the compost heap. If you want to plant deciduous trees and shrubs or citrus trees, now is a good time to do it. Take care to make sure the union where the tree has been grafted to the root stock is well above the mulch level, and do not feed them for 4 to 6 weeks, otherwise the new growth could end up with leaf burn. Watch out for powdery mildew on your soft leaf plants or vines. A spray with one part full cream milk and ten parts water should correct this. At the June meeting, the exhibitors presented a beautiful display of choice material. A Highly Commended Award was given to Bernie Corvi for her cut of an Orange Triumph Rose. The hall is situated in Trundle Street, Enoggera and is accessible by wheelchair. Meetings commence immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, phone 3356 1256

The Art of Barefoot Bowls
An update from the Gaythorne Bowls Club Our long time coach, George, at Gaythorne Bowls Club has always stressed on bowlers, and particularly new bowls members, the importance of ‘Rolling The Jack’. This also applies to anyone wanting to become a better barefoot bowler.
A lot of bowlers at any club can often be seen quickly going onto the green and immediately rolling the Jack (with hardly any forethought about what they are doing) and almost as quickly turning around without watching where the Jack eventually stops. But don’t follow those moves. Instead, consider following the 3 simple steps below and amaze your friends at how accurately you can roll the Jack down the white line and to the length where your team leader (Skip) wants it placed. The simple act of rolling the Jack, to start a match or an end, controls much of the game by choosing a length that is favourable to the bowlers in your team. Ok, firstly, place the Jack on the palm of your left hand then close the fingers of your right hand together around the Jack. Reverse this if you are left handed. This ensures that the Jack is basically at your fingertips making it very easy for the Jack to roll out of your fingers onto the green. Secondly, looking at the centreline of the mat, stand on the left side of the mat with both feet together pointing straight ahead and possibly with your right shoulder over this centreline of the mat. Again reverse this positioning if you are left handed. Unlike bowls, the Jack does not have bias so it will go straight in the direction you roll it. Finally, looking at your skip who should be standing on the spot to where the Jack is be rolled, take a normal step forward whilst your arm is moving backwards and then follow through with your hand and arm straight towards the aiming point. At this time, you should also be trying to bend your knees to get as low as possible to the green to ensure the jack just rolls out of your hand onto the grass in a very fluid movement. With just a little practice, you will find that you will soon be able to roll the Jack with confidence and accuracy and your friends will then ask – “How did you do that so well? Gaythorne Bowls Club is located at 18 Prospect Road, Gaythorne. For more information about the club call 3855 2725 or visit their website at www.gaythornebowlsclub.com.au Til next time – happy bowling from all at Gaythorne Bowls Club

Robots Arrive at Local Hospital
The robotic surgical assistant Da Vinci Xi has arrived at North West Private Hospital in Everton Park, helping support the latest surgical capabilities.
The da Vinci Xi system allows the surgeon to control the da Vinci robot from a console. The surgeon’s hand movements are translated to perform tiny movements within the body in real time. The system also offers optimised 3D vision, magnification and motion tremor control which are designed to help the surgeon with greater dexterity and precision. The robotic technology will help empower surgeons with minimally invasive surgical options for patients. The robotic Dr Meade working with assistant will be used for a Da Vinci Xi variety of procedures, including colorectal, urology, gynaecology and general surgery. Colorectal surgeon Dr Brian Meade performed the first surgery utilising the Da Vinci Xi robot at North West in mid-May. ‘For me, it’s about instrument advancements – it enhances ergonomics and my visualisation of tissues. It’s much easier to control instruments and optics, and it improves dexterity and suturing in tight spaces,’ Dr Meade said.

An update from the Newmarket VIEW Club
Just a few of the teddy bears set for the children in Cambodia
The founder of the Cambodia Clean Water and Toilet Project is Darrel Steer, who was the guest speaker at the Newmarket VIEW Clubs meeting in May.
Darrel went to Cambodia in 2015 for a holiday and he has not moved back home since! While there, he witnessed the poor standard of living and poverty throughout the rural villages. He observed that there was no access to clean water creating unsanitary living conditions and illness. Volunteers here in Australia knit up teddy bears to give pleasure to the many children in the Cambodia Clean Water and Toilet Project. Post COVID lockdown, people are seeking the opportunity to connect with others in the community. VIEW needs to make sure the organisation is in the forefront of the minds of those who are looking to expand their horizons. Make new friends and give back to the community. The Newmarket VIEW Club is part of a network of over 300 clubs and 15,000 women throughout Australia. Our members used raffles and donations to raise funds to continue to support the six students following The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program, by sponsoring their school activities. These children were among the hardest hit during school shutdowns, as many didn’t have the right tools they needed to learn from home. If you wish to know more about the Newmarket VIEW Club, email us on newmarketview@gmail.com or ring Heather on 0437 343 163 or Jean on 0438 177 176

Situated within their beautiful, heritage listed Queenslander home, The Nest Haberdashery offers a unique shopping experience. Can social connectedness improve mental wellbeing?
As we're living longer and healthier lives, the link between social connections and mental health has never been more important.
Many older people living in Australia are reportedly living in better health than ever before, they are also living longer lives. Part of leading a healthier, happier, and longer life means maintaining our social and mental health so by staying connected to the people and activities we enjoy can positively impact our overall health. Staying connected to the people and activities we enjoy can positively impact our overall health, especially as we get older. According to beyondblue, about 10-15 per cent of older people experience depression. Maintaining your social health not only improves your mental wellbeing, but it can also be a protective factor against anxiety and depression (beyondblue, Connections Matter, 2018). A regular lunch date with friends, volunteering for a local organisation, or taking up a new sport or hobby are just a few ways to get out and about. Circumstances can sometimes prevent people from engaging in their regular activities, but there are ways to overcome this. Sharing a cup of tea with someone in the comfort of your home can make all the difference, especially a regular catch up a few times a week. Our staff can sit down with you to discuss the activities you’d like to get more involved in. Looking for more opportunities? Here are some more ways we can provide social and lifestyle support:
Recreation and social engagement Do you want to get more involved in activities in your local community? If there is an activity or event you would like to get involved in, our staff can work with you to make it happen. Our team is passionate about assisting our customers to participate in the activities they enjoy. Companionship for social events We always want you to feel supported to lead the life you want. Our companionship support services mean our Support Professionals can accompany you to attend social events and support you to engage with your family and friends at home or in your local community. Travel planning Whether you’re travelling locally, out of town or interstate, we can provide staffing support. Our local, national and global network means you can access quality care and support in many destinations. Transport and mobility If you just need help getting from A to B, we can help you arrange transport and mobility assistance. This might mean organising transport to medical appointments, weekly brunch with friends, family celebrations and special occasions, or local community meetings and events. Call us on 07 3056 0777 to find out how Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD can provide support at home and in the community, including personal care, respite support, and social and lifestyle support for older Australians, and people living with disability. The celebratory concert at The Gap Uniting Church
The Serenata Singers presented a belated 50th anniversary concert for family, friends and former members of the choir at The Gap Uniting Church on Saturday afternoon, 29 May 2021. In 1970, The Gap and District Musical Society was founded. In 2020, it achieved its 50th anniversary under the name Serenata Singers. Just as activities to observe the occasion were being planned, COVID-19 arrived in Australia and it became necessary to defer any celebrations. Indeed, 2020 saw the choir cancel all its scheduled performances. Better late than never! The choir was keen to return to performing and relished the opportunity to sing in front of an appreciative audience. Under a slide show of photos from the choir’s history, the choir presented a varied program of medleys from Broadway musicals, folk and rock songs. A highlight was the choir’s performance of “Singing with Friends”, an original composition composed for the choir by Lynette Reville. Guest performances included a violin solo by Ran Luo, a saxophone number from Angus Campbell, and a piano duet by Lois Cutmore and Alison Siemon. The audience joined in enthusiastically with the community sing-a-long numbers. After the concert, there was a ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake and much conversation and catching up over coffee, tea and cakes (following COVID-safe guidelines of course). A chronology/history of the choir and photos/ images from past years can be accessed on the choir’s website https://serenatasingers. The delicious cake was enjoyed org.au/ by all

Tim Mander MP and Cr Tracy Davis attend the Sorry Day Ceremony at Teralba Park Sorry Day The Sorry Day Ceremony held at Teralba Park, Everton Park is getting bigger and bigger each year – in fact, I believe it’s the largest gathering in Brisbane. This is an important annual commemoration to help raise awareness of the Stolen Generations and assist in the process of healing and reconciliation. It was encouraging to see so many schools and community groups represented. I want to thank the Teralba Park Stolen Generation Support Group for hosting this special event and for inviting me to read the pledge. Gambling Community Benefit Fund Congratulations to Everton’s recipients of round 108 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund! THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
2021/22 State Education Budget This year’s state budget continues to deliver on the strong record of investing education Ferny Grove constituents have come to expect. All of our state schools will share in the $9.76 million announce in the budget with a range of classroom renovations and repairs at the top of the list. Mitchelton Special School comes in for special attention with the provision of new, much-needed specialty classrooms and time out areas. Early planning for the new building is now well underway with final plans expected later this year. This is something the Mitchie Special School Parents and Citizens have been crying out for and something I am proud to deliver on. Round 108, Gambling Community Benefit Fund Congratulations to Grovely State School P&C who are one of three Ferny Grove electorate not-for-profits who have shared in over $75,000 in Round 108 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Grovely State School will put the $35,000 they have received in this grant round to replace their aging school playground. The fund is offered to registered not-for-profits five times per year. For more information, please call my office on 3535 7100. Transit Oriented Development (TOD) construction to commence in July The long-awaited Ferny Grove TOD will use the footprint of the existing Ferny Grove Railway Station carpark to construct
the multi-level carpark as well as new retail, dining spaces cinemas, and even a new day-care centre. Construction will commence in late July and will inject around $140 million into our local economy and will boost local employment by more than 1,400 full time jobs. Over 700 of those jobs will be during the build with over 700 extra ongoing jobs in the precinct once the build is complete. It is important to note that around 230 car spaces will be unavailable during the multi-level carpark build – which is expected to take around 13 months. Once complete, commuter parking at the station will increase by more than 40%. Hills Chamber of Commerce Big Breakfast The Hills Chamber of Commerce is back to hosting its annual Big Breakfast charity fundraiser after last year’s COVIDenforced hiatus. This is a great opportunity to network with other business and community leaders while raising some much-needed funds for worthy organisations. There will be multiple raffles with fabulous prizes and a generous plated breakfast. To book tickets, go to: https://bit.ly/3xAT1Sf. Queensland Day Sponsorships Each year on 6 June, communities across the State celebrate Queensland Day – the day Queensland officially separated from New South Wales in 1859. Applications are now open for the 2022 Queensland Day Sponsorship Program. Grants of up to $15,000 (exclusive of GST) are on offer to not-for-profit, non-commercial associations, local governments and school P&Cs that are running initiatives to promote social, cultural and economic benefits to the community, encourage public participation and showcase our great State. For more information, or to download the 2022 QDSP guidelines, visit the Queensland Day website at www.qld. gov.au/queenslandday. Applications close 5pm, Tuesday 31 August 2021.
Each year I have the privilege of hosting school leaders at Queensland Parliament for a BBQ and tour. There were some highly focused future leaders in this first group from last month. I look forward to hosting the rest of our schools in the coming months.
