The Ritual HQ Difference
Ritual HQ have been in the Hills District for just over two and a half years and have established themselves as something different in the fitness industry, not only inside of the gym, but also in the local community. On site, their personalized approach to membership is helping give confidence, support and direction to those who may have once felt lost inside a gym. Every member is provided with a personalized training program and access to small group training classes that are limited in size to allow for high quality coaching - not just instruction. Ritual HQ is home to an experienced team of six coaches that know their members names, provide high quality one-on-one and group training, as well as specialized nutrition advice. For these reasons, this is an extensive and complete fitness service.
www.echo-news.com.au
In the community, Ritual’s own “RHQ Army” can be found at local events lending a spare set of hands where they are needed most. From the Easter Egg Hunt at Teralba Park to school breakfasts, fetes and colour runs, this team of volunteers - made up of coaches and members alike - have been helping community events run with a little more manpower. This is based on the Ritual HQ owners’ strong belief in giving back to the community. Helping members establish habitual training and nutrition habits, providing a highly personalized service, and giving back to the community are just a few characteristics that define Ritual HQ as a different experience in your search for health and wellbeing. Why we need to see exercise as medicine for the brain
By Duncan Grant, Exercise Physiologist, Pine Rivers Private Hospital
Typically, when people list why they exercise they reference weight loss, fitness or strength. Rarely does depression or anxiety treatment make the list. This is no surprise given that for many years talking therapies have been the go to for treatment of these conditions. Exercise enthusiasts regularly preach the mood benefits of exercise and we are now blessed with a wealth of research on this topic to back up the feeling. A dive into the research suggests two things; exercise to be an antidepressant with both short-term and long-term benefits; and a sedentary lifestyle to be a depressant. Many studies report high fitness levels to be a protective factor against development of future depression and anxiety and this makes sense when we consider our ancestral hunter and gatherer roots. A look in to the daily lives of a hunter and gatherer makes it quite evident that we were made to move. Hunter and gatherer tribes on average walk/run 6.5km - 15km/day, quite a stretch for the average westerner working in an office bound environment, ever so reliant on technological and mechanical conveniences. A recent study by the Lancet found the physical activity levels of Australian teens to be some of the worst ranked in the world coming in at 140 out of 146 countries according to WHO physical activity guidelines. Whereas a health report that came out in 2015 found 30% of adults are considered sedentary. So why is exercise effective in improving depressive and anxiety symptoms? The answer can be summarised into two categories; physiological and psychological. When you
www.echo-news.com.au
start to exercise your body goes into flight or fight mode, a situation which causes an influx of neurotransmitters into the circulatory system which best enhances our ability for survival. Many of these neurotransmitters, better known as endorphins, stimulate and enhance the brain in profound ways. If you are a novice to exercise, or active hobbies in general, it is normal to be nervous and unsure about where to start. Arguably, this is where the most powerful mental benefits can be achieved. Willingly choosing to expose yourself to something physically challenging and achieving personal goals builds self-efficacy and with it, a boost in confidence to overcome difficult challenges. This is where we see the most addictive and powerful mood benefits. We need to think of exercise as medicine for the brain. So, if we should be thinking of exercise as medication, how much, how long and how often should we be doing it? Current guidelines for exercise are geared towards improving our physical health and as such, we lack clear guidelines on what is necessary for achieving good mental health. Studies have shown as little as 10-15 min bouts of exercise can reduce stress, depressive symptoms and improve self-esteem in adults. The research clearly shows a dose-response relationship, suggesting the more you exercise, the greater the benefit will be. The best prescription I have synthesised from the research is as follows; something is better than nothing however, more is generally better. To be able to support our patients in achieving these goals, this year Pine Rivers Private Hospital has opened of a new exercise room available to inpatients during their stay. The exercise room, which includes a treadmill, bike and cross trainer, was installed due to overwhelming patient feedback. Our aim is to better assist patients in achieving a comprehensive plan for their mental health goals, including exercise. We also encourage our Inpatients to take part in our Walking Towards Wellness group which takes patients on a 30min walk around the area, using this time to take in surroundings in a mindful way – being aware of what is happening and how they are feeling during this time. Exercise duration and frequency aside, it is important to find something that you enjoy. Whether this is walking, running, swimming or boxing – take the time to find something that makes you want to go back! To find out more about the programs that Pine Rivers Private Hospital has to offer or to discuss our inpatient programs please contact 3881 7222 to speak to our Intake Team. Fabulous Physical Fun studio PIVOTS, with Virtual Fitness Classes
Some of the ladies from the Fabulous, Physical, Fun family
In late March, along with many other businesses, studio owner, Bonnie Cunial, was required by law to close until further notice. ‘Pivot’ is a popular buzz word. A business needs to make a significant change to survive during a forced closure, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Bonnie says that her clients’ health and wellbeing were her priority, and she wanted them to maintain their fitness during the closure. She quickly sprang into action, with the help of staff and trainers, to offer a private Facebook group, and filmed classes from her normal timetable. It was a steep learning curve but she even offered new classes, such as Tai Chi, Chi Ball and Cardio Dance. Now that the doors are open again, face-to-face classes are available. Bonnie says her clients already use the MindBody software to book classes, so it made sense to upload the videos to their newly developed platform, as an extra service for clients and potential clients. Often it’s convenient to do classes at home when the time suits, or on holidays. Many clients are unable to attend due to child care, lack of transport, or waiting for tradespersons. In September, there’s a special introductory price of only $14.50 a fortnight. This provides full access to the Virtual on Demand Library, with over 40 classes, and is ideal for beginners to intermediate. For more information call Bonnie on 0413 600 502, or to view the face-to-face timetable, visit www.fabphysicalfun. com.au . Additionally, there is currently an exclusive SPECIAL OFFER taking place where clients can ‘Try any 3 classes for $39’. So what are you waiting for?!

A Local Fitness Studio for Everyone!
It can be daunting taking the first steps back into fitness, however local fitness studio, Exquisite Fitness is a place where everyone is welcomed. At Exquisite, all levels of fitness are catered for, plus there are a huge variety of classes on offer from Bootcamps to Strength, Yoga, Pilates, Barre, plus so much more! Gym owner Nerida Smith has been a personal trainer in the area for over seven years and has always been driven by a passion for bringing health, fitness, energy and vitality back into people’s lives. ‘I am a huge believer in mixing up how people train and combining both resistance/weight training with short, sharp bursts of cardio activity for both re-sculpting and defining the body. This type of training not only keeps you interested, it also keeps the body guessing. This way it doesn’t fall into a comfortable state where it becomes less effective at burning calories and keeping the metabolism fired,’explains Nerida. In addition, the studio also boasts caring and friendly personal trainers who take a direct interest in you, your body, your goals, your circumstances and any obstacles that may get in the way of you reaching your goals. At Exquisite Fitness, you will be welcomed by a super supportive community of men and women who will support and cheer you on in order to achieve your own fitness goals. To top it all off there is a huge, friendly, colourful and air-conditioned creche that is fully decked out with books, colouring activities and a smart TV. Feel the Booty Burn with Barre
With a name like ‘Booty Burn’, you know your heading into a class with a bit of sass and clearly a lot of burn in the backside to boot. However, all puns aside, this new workout program, now offered at local fitness studio Exquisite Fitness, is rapidly gaining recognition and followers in the local area, and it is not hard to see why. The foundations of ‘Booty Burn’ are derived from ‘Barre’ - a class that originates from the ballet discipline, however no dancing experience is required! The class is a combination of dance, pilates and yoga all merged into one. The Barre method uses your own body weight for resistance and focuses on small, deliberate movements that focus on specific groups of muscles - specifically muscles that aren’t used in other workouts. Therefore, you're in for a fitness session that will work muscles you've never thought you had! Classes are all very low-impact, making it perfect for all body types, for people recovering from injuries, and even for pregnant ladies. Whats more, if done regularly, Barre fitness classes can work to deliver athlete-like strength, but with the long, lean, sculpted body of a dancer. Exquisite Fitness recently completed construction of ‘The Bliss Barre’ - a custom-built barre studio complete with air-conditioning where their popular ‘Booty Burn’ classes are held. For class times or more information, visit exquisitefitness. com.au or call Nerida on 0403 000 585

Top 5 Group Exercises for Seniors
The Ekka westerly’s have died down and the warmer weather is just around the corner, so why not consider a new, gentle group activity to get out and about? Many of these activities are available in our local area, at community halls and private businesses, and you will be sure to find like-minded folks out looking for social connections as well as to get their bodies moving. Tai Chi - is a gentle Eastern exercise that can provide benefits including flexibility and muscle strengthening. There are no special equipment needs to commence Tai Chi so look for a local group or even a DVD from the local library. Yoga – there are many forms of Yoga to suit all fitness levels, including chair-based yoga if you are not too steady on your feet. The benefits from a regular yoga practice do not only improve your body, they can also improve your mind with reduced stress and anxiety being a common side effect. Classes are prolific in most neighbourhoods and there are even free classes held outdoors by Moreton Bay Regional Council from time to time. Walking Group – there are many groups based in our
Page 28- September 2020, The Hills Echo
community that have regular, organized walks; new walkers of all fitness levels are always welcome. Ask around your friends and family for a recommendation, start your own group, or try the Heart Foundation website at www.walking. heartfoundation.org.au Pilates – traditional Pilates is a low-impact activity originally created to rehabilitate wounded WW1 soldiers. It looks to improve core strength, balance and posture by using resistance from your own body weight, a stretchy band and ring, or a more advanced level Pilates reformer machine. Aquatic exercise – the warm water of an exercise pool provides a low-impact and low-weight-bearing way to exercise, reducing the risk of injury, stress on the joints, and most importantly, reducing the risk of falls. Regular aquatic exercise can lead to improved muscle mass, increased strength and general fitness, as well as being an effective way to recover from injury. Many local swimming pools have organized classes for differing ages and fitness levels. Also, before embarking on any type of new physical activity, please consider if it is appropriate for you and have a chat to your GP. Getting out and about is a big part of life, and our team can support you in being part of the activities and events that matter to you. At Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD, we offer a range of services, from companionship to transport, to helping you attend work, volunteer commitments, social outings, family gatherings, recreational activities, community events, and more. We can provide support for just a few hours, or on a regular basis. It’s up to you.

What is compounding and how can it help you? Go back 50 years and every chemist was a "compounding chemist", mixing creams and tinctures up "just for you". Although the fundamentals of compounding remain the same, the art and science has been modernised. Digital scales, mixing machines, powder mixers, and ointment mills mean we produce high quality, accurate medicines in our lab in Dallas Parade, Keperra. "Compounding medicines involves making a specific medicine to the special requirements of an individual person,” according to Keperra Compounding Pharmacy owner Tahnee Simpson. "That may mean turning a tablet into a liquid for children, making a cream with multiple ingredients to reduce the need for separate products or producing capsules of a medication because the offthe-shelf version is unavailable. We can also make products that may be available overseas, but the product is not yet available here in Australia." Owners Tahnee Simpson and Blaine Woods both have special interests which have seen them undertake extensive training in women’s health, men's health, thyroid problems, auto-immune conditions, pain conditions, dermatology, cosmeceuticals and veterinary medicine. "Cosmetic medicine is a special focus for us at the moment,”Tahnee says. “We’re working closely with Dr Jeni Wellington at Keperra Medical Centre, who specialises in treating skin problems such as ageing skin, pigmentation, rosacea and acne with personalised products designed specifically for the individual." Dried Mango v’s Fresh Mango
Dried mango is a true tropical delight! This treat lets you enjoy the luscious, sweet taste of real mangoes anytime and anywhere. Rich in vitamin A, B-complex vitamins, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, dried mangoes can be a wonderfully healthy addition to your diet. However, although dried mango may be a convenient alternative to fresh mango, it is significantly higher in sugar and calories. Dried mango packs over 300 calories per 80g portion (compared to 53 calories in 80g of fresh mango), and over four times the amount of sugar, at 63g per 80g portion. Although dried mango does have have many benefits, it is always wise to watch your portion size and perhaps opt for fresh mango where possible.
