A Trail Blazing Service to Our Community
Whether you are a mountain biker, an avid trail runner, or just enjoy a leisurely walk out in nature, I am sure many of you have experienced the beautiful trails our local forests have to offer. BUT, have you ever stopped for a minute and wondered who actually maintains the fabulous trail networks we have in our region. Well, may I introduce you to community group extraordinaire, The Northside Trail Care Alliance (NTCA) which is part of the North Brisbane Mountain Bike Club ‘Dirt Dogs’.The club formed the NTCA as a service to the wider community. The NTCA works in collaboration with the land manager Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) to maintain the MTB trail networks in Bunyaville and Samford Conservation parks and is done on a 100% volunteer basis. Funding comes from the Dirt Dogs Club and public donations for the day to day trail maintenance. Furthermore, the club applies for grants to deliver larger projects such as the additional trails that have been built in Samford Conservation park in the last three years. As you may have noticed, our local trails have received a huge pummeling in recent months with the torrential rains and flooding, resulting in massive amounts of manual work carried out by these volunteers to restore the trails to their former glory. As Ben Malatzky from NTCA explains, the club have been lucky enough to have had the ability to access the trails to get on top of the damage. ‘QPWS have been very effective in arranging for us to have access to audit and repair the trails after the weather event, many other trail networks have not been able to start volunteer work. The community response to get these trails back up and

Some heavy lifting from volunteers to restore the damaged trails in pouring rain at Bunyville Conservation Park running has been fantastic,’ said Ben. ’It is worth noting that this will have an economic return for the area, bringing a larger than normal number of riders from all around to the local area as most other trail centers are closed. The network has had an above average visitation since reopening, likely to increase during the Easter school holiday period,’ So from the whole team at Echo News and the wider community, we would like to thank you NTCA for your extensive work and contribution to the beloved trails we are lucky enough to have in our region. Safer Roads for Wildlife in Community Project Call Out! The Hills District From the Mitchelton Rotary Club
To The Local Community, During the last two years of Covid restrictions, lockdowns, floods and fires we have managed to continue the great work with our partnerships in providing support in new and exciting ways! This year, we are reaching out to our community to see if there is something you have thought of throughout the last few years that is a need in our community. This could be through social engagement, structural projects, funding for programs or helping with applying for grants, or even a new community initiative like a clean-up Mitchelton day! We are open to all ideas on a community level and would love to hear back from the people that live in and around Mitchelton and love the area as much as we do. If you do have something that has been sitting with you for a while, we are asking you to reach out to us to see if this is something we can assist in making a reality. We are a focused group of individuals with great passion to support in many ways. Please send your enquiry through to mitcheltonrotary@ gmail.com Kind Regards, The Mitchelton Rotary Club

An improved existing fauna underpass, guard rail, exclusion fencing, pedestrian and vehicle gates, along with road marking and stencilling will be installed along Collins Road in Everton Hills.
Acting Mayor Jodie Shipway said the project was another step forward in Council’s mission to ‘Go Green As We Grow’. ‘Over the last few years, we’ve retrofitted 32 fauna underpasses and constructed 26 rope bridges in key corridors to boost safety for our wildlife as they move around their natural habitat, plus more than 10,000 metres of exclusion fencing and 50 wildlife road stencils in key crossing locations,’ she said. This financial year, Moreton Bay Regional Council has set aside, a massive $57.8 million for parks and environment and $18.4 million for waterways and coastal areas in their record $743 million 2020-21 Budget. In addition, $1.8 million has been allocated for environmental land buyback initiative. Division 10 Councillor Matt Constance said Council was also working to boost animal habitats through its commitment to plant another 45,000 trees in the next three years. ‘We’ve made significant improvements for wildlife safety around Bunyaville Conservation Park, connections with the Cabbage Tree Creek Green Infrastructure Corridor Network, and there’s more in the works around the Samford Conservation Park and the Kedron Brook West Green Infrastructure Corridor,’ said Councillor Constance. The upcoming Collins Road Project will also see 364m of guard rail installed, which is vital to maintaining and improving road safety along Collins Road. Works will commence next month, and are expected to take about six weeks to complete,

Electoral Boundaries - which ones are you in?
An update from the Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association Our Association is apolitical, but as the government Julian Simmonds, Liberal National Party; Peter Cossar, has a lot to do with outcomes for our community, we Australian Labor Party; Elizabeth Watson Brown, Greens; thought an explanation for new voters on electoral Damian Cooray, Liberal Democrats; Janine Rees, Australian boundaries might be helpful in the lead-up to the 21 Progressives; Bernard Wong, United Australian Party May election. The declared candidates for Dickson are: There are three levels of government - Local (Council), State (Queensland Government) and Federal (Australian Government). How these are represented are divided into ‘electorates’ and at each election, voters get to vote for the candidate that represents them in that electorate. The boundaries for each electorate are (often frustratingly) different for each level of government - meaning your ‘local’ candidates across Local, State and Federal don’t represent the exact same suburbs. Currently, the candidates for people who live in Upper Kedron and Ferny Grove are: Cr Steven Toomey (Brisbane City Council, The Gap Ward); Hon Mark Furner, MP (State member for Ferny Grove) and Mr Julian Simmonds, MP (Federal member for Ryan). Some parts of postcode ‘4055” are in the Dickson electorate, where the Federal member is the Hon Peter Dutton, MP. Similarly, parts of ‘4055’ are in Moreton Shire Regional Council. Elections typically take place every four years for Council and State, and every three years for Federal. You must be enrolled to vote. Enrollment has closed for the upcoming Federal election on 21 May 2022. For this Federal election, those of us that live in ‘4055’ will either be in the Ryan electorate or the Dickson electorate. The declared candidates for Ryan are:
Peter Dutton, Liberal National Party; Ali France, Australian Labou Party; Vinnie Batten, Greens; Alena Ward, United Australian Party; Tamera Gibson, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation; Alan Buchbach, Independent; Llyod Russell, Liberal Democrats. Source: https://www.abc.net.au/news/elections/ federal/2022 When voting, you’ll be provided with two forms called ballot papers. The ballot papers are for you to cast your vote for each of the two ‘houses’ that make up Australia’s parliament. These houses are called The House of Representatives and The Senate (also known as the Upper House). Put simply, the House of Reps is where the ‘main game’ happens and The Senate is a ‘house of review’. So, The Senate is a way of keeping the government that usually controls the House of Reps in check. Understanding how to correctly fill out the ballot papers is important, otherwise your vote may not be counted. Polling places will be open from 8am to 6pm. If you are unable to vote in person on the 21st May , you can vote early either in person or by post. Pre-poll voting starts on 9th May. Visit www.aec.gov.au for more information, including how to register to vote for the next elections. FGUKRA researches and advocates for residents to all levels of government on local issues. A Joyous Start to the Year for Keperra Golf Clubs Juniors
Juniors from Keperra Country Golf Club who are part of the club’s junior development program have enjoyed a successful start to 2022.
At the end of March, Wesley Hinton took out the Queensland's Men's Foursomes Championship for amateurs, alongside playing partner Alfie Ward (Maroochy River). The pair shot even par over two rounds at the Wynnum course to hold off the competition by two shots. Wesley’s victory came after a strong performance in January at the Junior Golf Queensland Summer Classic at Mount Coolum where he was Gross Runner Up in Boy's Division 1. Fellow Keperra junior Jack Jones took out the Gross Runner Up in the Boy's Division 2 category. January saw two-time Keperra Ladies Club Champion Caitlin Vanderkruk win the Bribie Island Junior Open championship for girls, with an excellent sub-par round of 72. The win qualified Caitlin for The Invincibles 2022 IGA Sunshine Coast Junior Masters Championship to be held in September. Caitlin has her sights set on furthering her golf career through the American College system, a path that fellow Keperra club member Emily Mahar has taken. Emily moved to the US and studied first at girls’ golf powerhouse Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix and now Virginia Tech. She made her professional tournament debut in June last year after qualifying for the 76th US Women’s Open in California, the biggest tournament in women’s golf in the world, and this year made her first appearance in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
A few of the talented Junior members at Keperra Golf Club
Ranked at 45 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, she was a late call-up to join the 72-strong Augusta field and missed the cut for the final round by only two shots. But there was a huge bonus. After the lifting of international travel restrictions her parents James and Katie were able to jump on a plane to the US to see her in action, the first time in more than two years since the pandemic began that Emily was able to see her family.

A ‘Food Garden’
After last year’s first Samford Edible Garden Trail was a sold out success, the organising committee knew that this year would have to be bigger and better than ever!
After all, last year’s trail had a last minute surprise arrival on the day, with Costa Georgiadis from ABC’s Gardening Australia flying up from Sydney that morning to light up the faces of young and old by sharing his contagious passion of gardening with visitors, locals and to his own audience nationally with live feeds all day. It’s no wonder then, the garden trail has had more locals step forward to offer even MORE diverse food gardens to open to the public this year. If you weren’t familiar with The Samford Edible Garden Trail, it all started out in 2020, where a group of local mums created the concept of locals opening to the public their amazing backyard edible gardens and how to grow food and share this knowledge with the community. So, with lockdowns putting things on hold, they started filming and sharing online instead, and the concept caught on not only locally, but also nationally and internationally. So much so that in 2021 the first live trail was held. Fast forward to May 2022, the group are still filming and posting their virtual tours online, AND are getting ready to open the doors to now 13 inspiring diverse edible gardens and small scale farms for the inaugural Open Day Weekend that will span over 2 days on May 14 and 15 this year. But there is MORE to the Trail than just the 13 diverse gardens on show. For people wanting to take some of the gardens home with them, Milen farm, a local urban community farm, will be hosting a farmer’s market, and open up an area to picnic among the produce with pre-paid hampers, rugs, a busker, and kids activities. There will also be an art exhibition featuring local artists in the community HUB at Samford and local cafes, and restaurants will be getting on board too and connecting with local farmers to offer a special menu item created from local produce. Whats more, the famous Samford Patisserie will be enticing ticket holders to sample their goods by offering ticket holders a complimentary coffee. Don‘t forget too to grab a tour of the gardens, and watch live demonstrations from garden hosts with surprise guests on the days! Details and ticketing information: Ticket sales for the 2 day Event on Saturday and Sunday May 14th & 15th, running from 9am-3pm can be found at https://events.humanitix.com/samford-edible-garden-trail2022-open-day With the purchase of a ticket, attendees will be sent a local map of where to begin the trail. Pricing: One Day $10, or $15 for a two day adult pass. Kids visit Free. The Hills Echo, May 2022 - Page 13
A Home Away From Home
The difficulty in finding appropriate accessible housing is an ongoing issue for many ageing Australians, those who live with disability and those who care for them.
A recent scoping study by the Australian Human Rights Commission found that given the increasing prevalence of disability, an estimated 60 per cent of homes will, at some point, be occupied by a person with disability or injury. The study, published earlier this year, found that because so few homes are designed to meet the needs of people with disability or older Australians, there are numerous problems with existing housing options. These include poor access, unsuitable internal layouts and a lack of other qualities such as good light and connections to outdoor views. To help get around the issue without breaking the bank, increasing numbers of families are looking at building bespoke ancillary dwellings on their properties. What is an ancillary dwelling? Sometimes referred to as mini homes or cabins, but more commonly known granny flats, these buildings are typically a one or two-bedroom self-contained housing unit located on the same block as a larger dwelling. Condensed into a smaller space, they offer all the features of a regular home, including a kitchen, bedroom, living room and bathroom. What are the requirements for building a granny flat? The requirements vary from state to state, but essentially there are several guidelines which you must comply with to determine if a granny flat can be built on your block. Discuss your options with your council, as there are various restrictions and policies to comply with before commencing. It can take
anywhere from 10 days to 12 or more weeks to receive approval, depending on your council. What costs are involved? CoreLogic data shows that building a granny flat on your property can help boost its value by as much as 30 per cent – but just remember, you get what you pay for. Granny flats have been advertised for as little as $10,000 but for that you will get barely more than a shell. Realistically, you should expect to pay anywhere from $40,000 to more than $150,000 – depending on your requirements. What needs to be considered before building your granny flat? When deciding on orientation, be sure to take into account the climate and what direction your backyard faces. By orientating your granny flat appropriately and analysing your heating and cooling requirements, you can ensure you maximise its energy efficiency. What are the core design elements to consider? While individual needs will vary, you will need to make sure your chosen provider is able to meet any requirements you have. This is likely to include a safe continuous and step-free path of travel from the street entrance and/or parking area to the granny flat, plus internal doors and corridors that facilitate unimpeded movement between spaces. Avoid Tax Traps if your property was damaged during the floods
With recent floods affecting many properties within our local community, if you are a homeowner or investment property owner, it is important to be aware of the tax implications when it comes to insurance payouts, re-builds, and repairs. If the insurance company repairs or rebuild your main residence, and you move straight back in at completion you do not have to worry. However, the complications begin if the property is not fully covered by your main residence exception, or you received a payout and moved on (without rebuilding). As an investment property owner there are several factors to be considered, depending on whether you receive an insurance payout and you re-build, the re-build or repairs are paid for by the insurer, if only repairs are carried out, and if plant and equipment are replaced by you with insurance proceeds. If you are unsure of the tax implication for your individual circumstances, we recommend you consult with a professional tax advisor to ensure you get all your allowable tax deductions and avoid any nasty tax traps.

Socialising in Retirement
Forming social connections during retirement is important, as it provides a sense of friendship and support for retirees.
Healthy relationships are necessary at every age, but the importance of socialising for retirees cannot be overemphasised. Regular social interactions can help keep retirees mentally, physically and emotionally healthy, whilst fending off difficulties inherent to loneliness. Joining a social Club like Probus provides retirees the opportunity to socialise with likeminded people in their local communities. There are over 1,500 Probus Clubs across Australia and New Zealand. There are also many ways that socialising can help improve both our cognitive and physical health. These include: Reduced stress. Retirees who are socially active tend to handle stress better. This leads to improving their cardiovascular health and immune system. Longer lifespan. High levels of socialising can help increase longevity. More fitness. Retirees with diverse social connections are more likely to exercise regularly. This can lead to a myriad of physical, mental and cognitive benefits. Reduced risk of depression. Consistent socialising reduces the likelihood of retirees experiencing depression caused by loneliness. Less anxiety. Similar to depression, retirees who socialise more experience less symptoms of anxiety.
www.echo-news.com.au
Greater self-esteem. Socialising helps retirees be better engaged, growing their confidence and sense of worth. As these health benefits contribute towards significantly improving the quality of life for many retirees, it is important to find an appropriate way of maintaining a healthy social life. The good news is that Probus is starting a new Probus Club in the Arana Hills District and we extend you a welcome to come and experience this club! Find out more about the new Arana Hills District Probus Club by calling Barbara on 0402 850 367 or Merv Richens on 0420 373 162. Visit www.paqnetwork.com.au for more details.

Come and Discover Willmore!
Willmore Kindergarten is hosting its annual Open Day on Saturday 21 May, 9 to 11am.
An event for past, present and future families and friends to come and meet our wonderful teachers, explore our beautiful community kindergarten and experience Willmore in action. Willmore Kindergarten & Preschool is a not-for-profit, community-run kindy. As you walk through the gate, you will feel how warm and welcoming our space is. It's where individuality is celebrated, children and families are loved, nurtured and heard, and where everyone is accepted. Because of these integral values, children can be passionate learners. Willmore offers a program where we believe children to be strong, capable and competent. They are great researchers and we work alongside them to learn and discover. We see the early years as a crucial time in a child’s life where lifelong learning patterns are established. We want the children in our care to grow with the knowledge of how to be empathic, thoughtful, considerate of others and their world, and to have a voice in their community which is valued. We want the children to feel great about themselves and to develop their identity as both individuals and members of a group. We believe that children learn best in a play based environment where abundant, open ended materials are available to enable the children to express their many languages for learning. We regularly use the word safe with the children to ensure that is how they feel at all times when at Willmore. We believe that children need to feel safe and connected in order to learn. The curriculum offered at Willmore is a collaborative venture, negotiated with children and developed by fully qualified early childhood professionals. Willmore’s teaching team

are passionate about advocating for young children and are influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach, Vygotsky and Bruner. Your child's curiosity, enthusiasm and love of learning will continually be encouraged by staff. We are connected to our community and have long established partnerships with businesses and schools. We support the community with thoughtful endeavours which enable the children to have a voice, to make a difference. Willmore Kindergarten boasts beautiful natural outdoor spaces for the children to discover and explore in. We believe it's essential for their wellbeing and development to be connected to their environment and spend a large proportion of the day outdoors. We imbed sustainable practises in our program through recycling, our worm farm, gardening and caring for all of the living elements in our space. At Willmore Kindergarten you will discover the extraordinary in the ordinary. We look forward to exploring with you!

Having a guess! What’s arrived from the Qld Museum
Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) values children investigating, discovering and asking questions. We subscribe to Queensland Museum and each fortnight, new items arrive. It provides a wonderful opportunity for children to look closely, wonder, discover and build knowledge. Another learning opportunity undertaken by children is to guess what the ‘hidden’ museum item could be. To have a guess you have to be brave. Brave to speak up. Brave to accept that their guess may not be right and that’s okay. Many children become braver, the more that guessing is practised. When the museum item is revealed, children can share what they know, what they would like to find out and how they might find out the information. This is thinking scientifically. The children wondered where these animals lived in the ocean. Drawing the museum exhibits helps children to learn more about the animals. Come along to our upcoming Open Day on the 4th June to find out more about our programs A Dugong arrives from the museum! at MPC.

60 years on for Everton Park Kindy!!
C&K Everton Park Kindergarten is so very excited to be celebrating our 60th Birthday this year!
To kick off celebrations C&K Everton Park Kindergarten is holding an Open Day/ 60th Birthday celebration on Saturday 4th of June from 9am to 12noon. There will be free entertainment and face painting! Over the past 60 years many children have passed through our beautiful kindy and we have now had generations of families attend. Over the years many families have contributed to building our beautiful kindergarten since it opened its doors in 1962 on 28 Fallon Street, Everton Park. The Kindergarten Association was formed at a public meeting at St Jude’s Hall in 1957 and after much collaboration and fundraising, a lease was signed with the Brisbane City Council for the land, and a loan of 3,457 pounds started the building project. We are very grateful to the dedicated, determined families who started this journey that has provided 60 years of early childhood memories for so many locals. The community at C&K Everton Park Kindy have turned a plain building with limited trees (see picture on the right) into a beautiful rainforest for our children with playground structures, sandpits, vegetable patches and natural gardens that attract many of our native wildlife! We have also developed a huge store of toys, books and resources for the children over the last 60 years. At Everton Park kindy, children get to experience the beauty of nature and they can be seen climbing our treehouse, observing wildlife, watering the gardens, reading, playing dress-up, building, creating and so much more.

Education
We are lucky at C&K Everton Park Kindy to have a wonderful staff with a passion for education. Once our educators start with us, they often stay on for many, many years. Our Group 2 Teacher/ Co-Director Mrs Lindy Diacaris has taught at C&K Everton Park for over 35 years. Teachers are qualified early childhood educators with years of experience. Our class structure allows ample quality time with the children, due to the higher-than-average staff to child ratio. We have been lucky enough to connect with one of our first students from the class of 1962. Glenys kindly shared a photo of our first ever Kindy class. Where have the years gone!? If you have any fond memories of C&K Everton Park Kindergarten, we would love you to share your photos and stories. Please email us at history@epk.asn.au. Giving our youngest citizens a big voice News Report
A New Member At Our School!
Written by Sanni, Sibella, Evie, and Sarah, students at St Williams School Grovely There’s a new member in our school! His name is Hugo. Surprisingly, he’s not a student or staff member; he’s a therapy dog! He’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Poodle - a Cavoodle who is very well trained by our Guidance Councillor, Mr Bird. He brought Hugo to St William’s School at the start of this year. All the students adore him and love seeing him do all the tricks he’s been taught by his beloved owner. Hugo meets with us every Tuesday. If you’re stressed, worried or sad you can go and see Mr Bird and Hugo. Hugo is so cute and cuddly that all your worries will instantly disappear. Hugo is still a puppy and is very energetic, so Mr Bird takes him on a walk every morning before they come to school. In our opinion we think that Hugo as the therapy dog is a huge success at St William’s School. Mr Bird thinks that Hugo here at St William’s is helpful and brightens people’s day. He also thinks that Hugo is really good for our mood and health. Hugo loves exercise so if people find it hard to sit still and pay attention in class, they can even go for a run with Hugo. Hugo also helps teach students their social skills. We love that Mr Bird has brought Hugo to our school!

Good Reef!News It’s Curtin’s for Clunkers. & Views from a Tramway Muse
Have you ever wondered where all those clapped-out clunkers and bald tyres go? Or the beaten-up boats and rust-bucket barges that have passed their use-by date? Well, you may be surprised to hear that hundreds of old car bodies, more than 20,000 spent tyres, and dozens of rusty boats have been dumped into Moreton Bay over the years; and it was all done with the blessing of successive State Governments. Curtin Artificial Reef is located just offshore of Cowan Cowan, a humble hamlet on beautiful Moreton Island. It's one of several artificial reefs created for recreational purposes - fishing and scuba diving. The clutter of old clunkers was followed by hundreds of abandoned shopping trolleys, navigation buoys, over 1000 tonnes of concrete pipes, a huge dry-dock gate, and even a historic Brisbane tram that was dropped from a Chinook helicopter in 1981! Brisbane trams only come in two sizes: big ones and whoppers. FM Tram 502 was a true whopper, still weighing a thumping 8-tonnes even after the heavy under-carriage was removed. Fortunately, the RAAF Chinook was a whopper chopper in its day and it managed to deliver the discarded people parcel without any collateral damage along the way. Tram 502 made quite a splash on her watery debut, but it was all over in seconds. The old lady quickly disappeared to join a long line of decrepit shipwrecks and crumpled clunkers that litter the sea floor. Divers recovered the lifting straps soon after the drop and they reported that a large groper had already claimed the driver's cab! The old lady has lost some weight over the years as she gently decomposes between a brace of ancient whaling boats. You'll need full scuba diving gear if you want to climb aboard today, but if that sounds too challenging, you can visit 502's cousins at Ferny Grove. Crabs and lobsters may be in short supply, but the museum has plenty of bottled water. And if that sounds a tad lame, you can take your own bubbles and a pair of floppy rubber flippers to boot........

Camp Mountain Commemorations
History
An update from the Samford Museum So much has filled our calendars in recent weeks, however two special events are noted in this article.
May Day 1947 was the day the Custom’s Department organised a picnic train bound for Closeburn that became derailed at Camp Mountain. May 2nd 2022 marked the 75th anniversary of the disaster. Last month, at the location of the crash on McLean Road South, Camp Mountain, a memorial plaque is present which can be visited at anytime. Furthermore, on Monday 2nd May, Samford Museum commemorated the tragedy with an Open Day. Mothers’ Day holds special significance to all. In earlier times, Samford was a very rural area and during flood events, the region would become isolated and medical assistance was not easily accessed when new arrivals made their entry into the family. With the recent floods still fresh in our minds, this lady’s account of her parents’ trip to hospital can be visualised. Dad told us the story of his daughter who was born during very bad weather in February 1931. He came in for the evening and it was raining heavily. He even said he would not send his dog out on a night like this. At about 11pm Mum said it was time to go to hospital. As all the creeks were flooded the only way out was to use a railway punt to Ferny Grove to meet an ambulance. Mum used an umbrella to keep herself and her hospital port dry. He didn’t say, but I guess they got to Samford by horse and sulky. For Enquiries about the Samford Museum please call Geoff on 0417 610 983

Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson
We’ve been through a lot together in the past couple of years. Our community has faced the difficulties of pandemic and devastating flooding. But through this adversity, we’ve seen the community come together to support one another in times of need. We are now rebuilding our economy and our local community. Australia’s post-COVID recovery has been among the strongest in the world and unemployment is nearing a 50-year low of below 4%. This election will have real consequences for Australia’s economy – and our local community. Now is not the time to risk our economic recovery and national security with Labor. With growing global threats and uncertainty, the Morrison Government has strengthened our Defence Force by making the largest investment and expansion of the ADF during peacetime - to keep Australia safe. To build a stronger future we are: • Delivering even more high-skilled, well-paying jobs. • Delivering lower taxes for workers and small businesses.
• Reducing your cost of living to make it easier to pay household bills. • Making record investments in health and education. • Investing in the roads, rail, bridges, and dams Australia needs. Locally, we are building more commuter car parks at Ferny Grove train station, flood proofing Youngs Crossing, rolling out the next stages of the new university at Petrie Mill creating thousands of jobs and delivering better roads. We are also upgrading community facilities like our PCYCs and many of our parks are being renewed. The alternative is Anthony Albanese and Labor with their higher taxes, higher unemployment, and cuts to our Defence Force and national security. We can’t risk our recovery with Labor. With your support, the Liberal National team will continue our plan for a strong economy and a stronger future.

This meaning behind the words ‘Cor Infinitus’ define heart’s courage and infinity. Courage is needed by the families to face each day moving forward after a loved one has taken their life and their hearts need to share rather than hide their pain. Infinite is the magnitude of loss felt by families when a loved one takes their own life & the amount of time left without that person. Cor Infinitus is completely inclusive of all individuals, eras, services and circumstances, the Cor Infinitus symbol is the only symbol, apart from the Australian National Flag, to represent all those who have served our country since federation. THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove Terry White Chemmart Arana Hills tops the list!
Since the third dose booster of the COVID19 vaccines have been approved for use in Australia the Arana Hills pharmacy staff have delivered over 16,000 doses into locals’ arms! What an amazing effort! Congratulations to the hard-working staff and thank you to everyone who has rolled up their sleeves.
Hills Carnivale
Hills Carnivale will be back bigger and better again this year in George Willmore Park on Saturday 28 May. I will be there all afternoon, so drop by my stall and say gidday!
Ferny Grove State High School ready to throw some shade
I caught up with Peter from Terry White Chemmart Arana Hills while I was getting my flu shot and saw the amazing number of vaccines the pharmacy has delivered. At the end of April, I dropped into Terry White Chemmart Arana Hills to get my annual flu shot and was amazed to discover that Hills District pharmacy is the number one pharmacy in Queensland for dispensing COVID19 booster shots.
The Palaszczuk Government has provided tens of millions of dollars for this and future generations of Ferny Grove State High School students through the provision of new specialist classrooms, science labs, kitchens, woodworking, and metal shops as well as a new sports and performing arts hall. However, Education Queensland generally does not fund shade sails or playgrounds directly – so P&Cs are forced to come up with the funds. Late last year Peter Cossar approached me to ask what he could do for our community. The Ferny Grove State School P&C has been looking at installing shade sails for students for the past few years. Peter joined me at the school to let me know the good news that if Labor is elected, Ferny Grove State High School P&C will be provided with $125,000 to install new shade sales as an election commitment.
Peter Cossar giving me the good news for Ferny Grove State High School students.

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc
The Gem Club Workshop is open for inspection by anybody who may wish to become a member or just see how we do cutting and polishing of Gemstones.
We are open from 9am- 12noon on a Thursday morning for Lapidary work and 12 Noon to 3pm for Silverwork enthusiasts. We also have a Saturday afternoon session for Lapidary from 1pm to 4pm. Our Clubrooms are situated at 40-46 Ferneydell St Ashgrove. The centre point of our workshop is our Diamond saws. We have seven Diamond Saws of various blade diameters from 4 inches to 24 inches. These saws are used for cutting faceting material into smaller pieces (4 inch saw) to the 24 inch saw which is used to break down large pieces of Gemstone material, such as Petrified Wood, Rhodonite and Jasper. Once these pieces are broken down on the 24 inch saw they can be cut into slabs on the 12 inch and 14 inch saws. These ‘slabs’ generally, around 1 cm in width, are used to be made into Cabochons or Free Forms. They are finally trimmed to shape on the 10 inch “trim” saw we have. This saw runs in a mixture of a cutting fluid which is mixed 10 to 1 with water. The larger saws 24 inch down to 12 inch, generally are lubricated in mineral oil to keep the blade cool and flush out the saw cuts. The oil has to be changed a couple of times a year, when the “mud” builds up in the sump of the saw. When changed, the oil is left to stand and settle and can be re-used again later on. If you require any more information about the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc. please contact John on 33511038. New members are always welcome.

Rosella Jam Is Ripening To Go! An update from the Hills Organic Community Garden
Our members are working hard getting the beds ready for planting and looking forward to sewing some seedlings. This is the start of a busy time at the garden keeping the new plants well watered and free of weeds. However, the end result is a wonderful crop of fresh vegetables. The Rosellas are just starting to fruit and bottles of Rosella jam are being shared amongst our members. Rosella jam is always in demand as you can’t usually purchase it at the supermarkets. Our Napoli squash are still producing well, and of course our chillies and sweet potatoes are serving us well. At the moment the herb garden has flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives. Let’s not forget the passionfruit that are well fruited and hopefully we will be able to enjoy them before the cockatoos discover them! Some vegetables are best grown from seed to avoid transplant shock. Examples of these are; carrots, peas, beans and radish that are best grown from seed but must be thinned out to allow enough space to grow and mature. Snow peas, beetroot, silver beet, baby spinach and tomatoes will be on our list of plantings and we look forward to getting them into the ground and watching them grow and mature. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier - so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm. As well, they attend to the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980 for information.

90 Years Young & Still Going Strong
An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club During the Christmas-New Year recess, a foundation member of the Mitchelton & Districts Garden club, Berenice Corvi, had her 90th birthday, making three club members over this age.
At the April meeting, on behalf of the club, Margaret Morrow, the club patron, presented Berenice (Bernie) with a floral arrangement of chrysanthemums and carnations. Despite the bad weather beforehand, club members’ show bench entries were commendable. Hedi Marshall received the ‘Champion Award’ for a magnificent potted flowering orchid. May is the last month of Autumn. Already when the sun is not shining there’s a chill in the air. Sub-tropical and temperate climate indoor plants would benefit from being placed outside at night a few times. If you are considering planting fruit trees, nurseries have new stock available. A well drained sunny position with lots of organic material in the soil is required. For areas where space is limited, dwarf fruit trees will cater for your needs. Given correct conditions they will grow and produce successfully in large containers. Azalea growers will Bernice with her 90th notice buds getting Birthday Cake fatter for flowering in spring. If the buds are turning brown or dropping, this could indicate petal blight fungus. You should be able to control this if fungicide applications begin straight away. Have you noticed about dusk, the intensity of mosquito attacks? Mosquitoes transmit disease, so always protect yourself from bites by using an insect repellent or covering your bare skin. Check no water is in vessels in your yard, e.g. pot plant saucers, or forgotten pet dishes. Don’t be concerned about the water in the cup of bromeliads as these plants provide a chemical to prevent mosquitoes breeding. All being well with the COVID situation, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on Thursday, 2nd June. Guest Speaker, Barbara Beerling, will talk about ‘Repairs to Flood Damaged Gardens’. Being a qualified horticulturist, Barbara specialises in garden problems, disease control, plant identification, roses, fruit trees and pruning, so her advice, will be invaluable to those present whose gardens were damaged during the February/ March floods. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Morning tea is served at 9.45 a.m. and the entrance to the hall is at 36 Trundle Street, Enoggera. The club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Come Meet Our Local Cake Decorators An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association
What fun we had at our April Meeting and welcomed several interested new members.
We had a workshop afternoon and learnt how to make small flowers using basic tools found in the kitchen. We then added them to a small plaque suitable for an Easter or Mother’s Day cake. The May meeting has been brought forward a week and will be held on the 14th May as our venue will be used for the Federal Election on the 21st May. Robyn will be showing us a popular technique called ‘Bas Relief ’ after a short business meeting. We meet at the Arana Hills Community Hall on Dawson Parade commencing at 1pm. We are a branch of the Queensland Cake Fay, an original member of the Decorators Association club, demonstrating the flowers at and we aim to foster and improve the art of cake the last meeting. decorating and sugar craft by providing the opportunity for an exchange of ideas and skills. Each meeting we have some form of sharing, either a workshop or a demonstration by a member or guest. Check our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com for more information. New members are always welcome.

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN
THUMBS UP to my thoughts on the election. ‘No matter who you vote for — you still end up with a politician.’ THUMBS DOWN to bullying and harrassment being outlawed in all workplaces except Parlaiment House. How did the nasty Labor ladies get away with it for so long. A new speaker of the House needs to be stronger and better in touch. THUMBS UP to the Broncos supporters still believing good things are just around the corner with Kevvy and million dollar Adam. The corner may just have a long road in front of it! THUMBS DOWN to a Europe that sits by watching Putin destroy cities and lives in Ukraine. Someone needs to step up soon because Joe Biden and the US are firmly sitting on their hands. THUMBS UP to Clive Palmer stumping up another pile of cash to have a go at the Federal Election. It adds humor to a boring monologue and means at least the Greens are not the only clowns in the parade. THUMBS DOWN to billions being promised to SEQ for buses and trains for the Olympics when we cannot even fund efficient hospitals. THUMBS DOWN to Qld Government Integrity Commission that appears designed to make sure nothing untoward is seen, heard or done. ‘Blind Freddy’ know there is more than a bad smell in the Government, so someone needs put on his ‘BigBoy’ pants and get the job done.
