Dig into Aussie Tucker 2020 Ferny Grove this Australia Day Bowls Club Champs

Celebrations for Australia Day 2021 will be on a greatly reduced scale at the Samford Museum due to the uncertainty of restrictions surrounding Covid 19.

A long time ago when the Samford Progress and Protection Association (SDPPA) was young, moves were set in motion to establish a museum in Samford. The ultimate aim was the preservation of local history. In order to acknowledge the major contributions made by SDPPA and the community during the past 50 years, entry on Australia Day will be FREE. Australian themed activities will be available for children. Opportunities are also abound for grandparents to explain to youngsters how they used many of the objects displayed throughout the complex. There will be Blacksmith demonstrations by the resident blacksmith, Martin and machinery that has been restored by members, will be working. In addition, assistance with family and local history enquiries will be on hand. As per Australia Day traditions, Aussie tucker favourites such as billy tea, damper, a sausage sizzle and a BBQ will be available for sale. The museum will be open from 9am until early afternoon, so pop down and reminisce or share your stories and photos with members. Everyone is most welcome! For further enquiries, call 3289 2743 or Geoff on 0417 610 983. Alternatively, email info@samfordmuseum.com.au More details about the Samford Museum can be found over on their website at www.samfordmuseum.com.au

Oil Cleansing will not only clean your skin but it will also help balance the natural moisture your skin needs. Oil cleansing is a natural way to cleanse your skin of ’pollution’ - makeup, dirt, and impurities - without stripping its natural oils. The way oil cleansing works is based on the Theory of ‘like attracts like‘. Plant oils are massaged in circular upward strokes into your neck and facial skin where the oils sink down deep in the pores, attracting & clearing excess sebum and grime. The gentle massage action is wonderfully relaxing, it stimulates blood flow and it helps smooth the skin. To remove the oil, a warm to hot towel compress is applied and gently wiped away leaving your skin feeling beautifully soft, hydrated, and clean. Look for oils that are non-pore-clogging, such as the ones in the Amisi Five Seeds Cleansing Oil.

Discs, Steel and Diamond Wheels News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

The Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club will re-open their clubrooms on Thursday January 14th in 2021.

After closing the workshop in December, members were busy cleaning and repairing the lapidary machinery ready for 2021. 90% of the equipment has diamond-based wheels and saw blades which have a short life when used under club conditions. The diamond saws run in a mineral oil, which is used to reduce the heat when cutting a rock, which has to be replaced every few months. The oil which is taken out is left to settle over a period of months and 80% can be used again once the rock residue has settled. Two types of diamond wheels are used in the workshop, hard and soft diamond wheels. Hard diamond wheels, once worn down, are no longer usable. These wheels have a life of about twelve months. The soft diamond wheels have a backing of sponge rubber and an outer belt which is impregnated with various grades of diamond. These wheels generally last about twelve months but can have the outer belt replaced with fresh diamond, so their cost of replacement is generally about half of the original cost. The upstairs area has had a facelift over the Christmas break, too. Walls have been repainted and the wooden floor re-sanded

and estapoled. The fresh new look welcomes new members who may wish to join the club. You can come along any Thursday morning between 9am and midday or on a Saturday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm to have a look around. Here is hoping that conditions for organising field trips to collect cutting materials will improve in 2021! For more information, please contact John on 3351 1038 or Llyod on 3351 2093.

Summer Challenges for Home Gardener

From The Hills Organic Garden C ommunity Summer has hit with a vengeance with high temperatures and little rain. However, the rain we received in mid-December was very welcome and did wonders for the Hills Organic Garden (HOG).

The cucumbers at HOG have just started producing along with zucchinis, however the tomatoes are really struggling. The beans, sweet potatoes and rosellas are doing well and hopefully a good crop will reward the HOG community with some delicious rosella jam, along with fresh beans and sweet potatoes. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around their beautiful garden. Great Western Announces $6M makeover for Woolies

Great Western Super Centre has announced Woolworths will invest $6 million in an upgrade including a new dedicated Drive Thru Pick Up facility, with the renovations being undertaken from January 2021 to May 2021.

The major makeover comes as the Great Western Super Centre celebrates its 20th birthday, with Woolworths remaining the anchor tenant since the retail precinct opened in 2000. The supermarket has renewed its lease for 10 years, and the facelift will cater for the area’s growing population and customer demand for new products and services. Great Western Super Centre was acquired by Consolidated Properties Group and CVS Lane Capital Partners in March this year. The partnership is planning to undertake a rejuvenation of the whole retail precinct over the next year. Consolidated Properties Group Executive Director of Retail, Craig O’Donnell, says the transformation has been welcomed by a number of retailers and staff who have remained with the centre for many years. ‘It’s heartening to know there are several staff within the centre who have stayed for the entire 20 years. That’s the kind of loyalty and commitment to local service that makes Great Western Super Centre unique,’ he said. Great Western Super Centre boasts 15,400sqm of floor space anchored by Woolworths and Aldi, alongside six mini majors and 44 specialty stores.

Trams On Track For A Bonza New Year News and Views from the Brisbane Tramway Museum - By David Fryer

What a year that was! Just when museums and galleries were gearing up for the new Roaring Twenties, they were suddenly clobbered by Covid. Doors closed, events collapsed, and exhibits were mothballed in deep storage. Lock-down limbo was the new normal and dark clouds of despair descended like a cold wet blanket. But despite the significant Covid challenges, there were some outstanding highlights in 2020. One was a visit from the VCCQ - the Vintage Car Club of Queensland. Formed in 1955, it's the oldest vintage car club in the state and it also boasts some of the most interesting vehicles. It goes without saying that social distancing rules were strictly observed at all times, but vintage cars are often socially distanced anyway. Restorations are expensive and time consuming, so it's usually prudent to park well away from swinging doors and popping champagne corks! With 2020 hindsight in 2021, some institutions will no doubt look back and ask questions: Should we have done things differently? Could we have done better? Post-mortem debates are all very well, but the truth is the Tramway Museum did remarkably well; it could have been a lot worse. Members of the adjoining Men's Shed also rolled up their sleeves to get on with the job of restoring Brisbane's historic trams. They are the unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a good selection of rolling stock is always on track for the anticipated bonza year ahead. If you haven't already visited to the museum, you are definitely missing out. And if you have been, why not come back on one of the 'special days' to check out the other exciting exhibits?

Some of the exquisite cars on display VCCQ visited the museum

You never know what may turn up. That said, we're all hoping the Joker in the pack - Covid-19 - doesn't spoil the show in 2021....... The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by the Brisbane City Council.

Roses need attention in early summer. Have you noticed the size of blooms has diminished during the warmer weather? Well, now is the time to remove spent blooms and any dead or diseased material. Also incorporate a comprehensive program of fertilizing and spraying and you'll be rewarded with a wonderful flush of blooms next Autumn. Fruiting trees need a light application of a complete fertilizer too, and the lawn needs attention. Have you noticed small delicate orange wasps hovering over the grass? This indicates the presence of lawn grubs as the wasps are looking for somewhere to lay their eggs in the lawn grub larvae. If you think there are lawn grubs in your lawn, leave a damp bag or cloth overnight in the area. In the morning turn the bag over and the lawn grubs will be attached to it for removal. Lovers of parsley should plant new plants every six months. At this time of year, existing plants start to rot. Always pick parsley from the lower stems and this will prolong the life of the plant. The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club finished the year with the November meeting due to the COVID-19 restrictions. All going well, the first 2021 meeting will take place on 4th February at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. Kath Stumer will be the guest speaker and her topic will be Caladiums.Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and is accessible by wheelchair. For more information, please phone 3356 1256. www.echo-news.com.au

Summer Daze With the warmer months comes the temptation to

spend time in the sun. But with fun in the sun, comes the increased risk of sun damage and skin cancer.

Rates of skin cancer in Australia are high. According to SunSmart, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. We have one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world. A spot on your skin may seem unsuspecting, but skin cancer is serious. Each year, about 2,000 Australians die from skin cancer. The good news is however, that almost all types of skin cancer are preventable, and it’s never too late to use sun protection to reduce your risk. As we get older, our risk of skin cancer increases, with most skin cancers diagnosed in people over the age of 45. The important message is for everyone – regardless of age – to understand their skin cancer risk. The early detection of skin cancer is especially important for older Australians - getting to know your skin and being aware of what to look out for is vital. Look for that mark or spot on your skin that just looks unusual, different, or not quite right. If you notice any of these signs, see your doctor as soon as possible. Most skin cancer is easily treatable at the early stages. But left untreated, it can be fatal. In the summer months, our skin can burn in as quickly as 11 minutes. It’s damage that’s permanent; it can’t be undone. Although, thankfully sun protection at any age will stop more damage from adding up. When it comes to sun protection, it’s the UV you need to be mindful of, not the temperature outside. UV, or ultraviolet radiation, is a type of energy produced by the sun. You can’t see or feel UV and won’t notice the damage until it’s too late.

Consider these tips to help you be safe in the sun this summer: 1. To find sun protection times visit the Bureau of Meteorology 2. Slip on clothing that covers as much skin as possible 3. Slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen and re-apply every two hours 4. Slap on a broad-brimmed hat 5. Seek shade where you can 6. AUSTRALIA DAY FACT: MEN MADE UP THE VAST PERCENTAGE OF CONVICTS

85% of original convicts transported to Australia were male with an average age of 22, while 20 per cent of early convicts sent to Australia in the 1800’s were women.

Community Sport – Why Play It? By Georgia Wright

As a sport-lover and a writer for Echo News, I thought to myself, why not fuse my enjoyment for both hobbies together for this month’s article? For as long as I can remember, sport has always been a big part of my life. From carving up the dance floor at AMMA School of Dance as a child, to finding my strength at Moon Lee Tae Kwon Do, to calling myself an Arana Hills Netball Club player, I have never gone a period of time without sport—and I don’t plan to, either! According to research, children who dabble in sports are eight times more likely to grow up to be healthy, productive adults with stronger leadership and communication skills. Even the academic performance and mental health of young ones are evidenced to improve, along with their social abilities. But I’m sure none of these facts comes as a surprise to you. The countless benefits of participating in regular physical activity are known far and wide by all. However, the bottom line is—kids need exercise. And lucky for all the rising pocket rockets in our community, The Hills District has a marvellous array of sporting clubs on offer. With 2020 finally coming to a close, another year of opportunities and open doors lies ahead of us. For the youth in our district, the New Year Resolution of ‘getting fitter, happier and healthier’ can easily be made into a reality. They could look toward netball, gymnastics, touch football, hockey, martial arts or even the synchronised swimming lessons offered at for their dose of fun, physical activity. Dozens of sign-on days and try-outs are right around the corner, so make sure to stay informed about these dates for sporting clubs that interest your child! ___ Personally, I’ll be forever glad WHEN YOUR MENTION THIS ADVERT that I started up sport from a young age, and even gladder that I found my love for netball. ___ Some of my highest highs have been felt on the netball court, and over the years it really brought me out of my shell. So, community sport – that’s why your child should play it.

Selecting a Kids Sport can be a Balancing Act

With so many sports on offer, it can be hard for parents to know what to enrol their children in. Nevertheless, gymnastics may be the answer. Gymnastics is a great foundation program for all sports as it develops fine and gross motor skills, strength, coordination and balance, whilst also allowing children to socialize in a fun, engaging environment. Mitchelton Youth Club (MYC) runs a number of gymnastics programs for children of all ages, however their Kindergym program is helpful for children before they go to school. Kindergym is a physical and social development program for children aged approx. 2-5 yrs. based on gymnastics skills and apparatus. This unique program is built around your child’s coordination and development, but also builds self-esteem, as they have full control over their body movement. As with all the gymnastics programs that take place at MYC, the Kindergym program is taught by accredited coaches and is fully affiliated with Gymnastics Queensland and Gymnastics Australia. You can be fully assured that this club knows what they are doing when it comes to gymnastics. Having been established in 1941, this not-for-profit organisation has been proudly supporting the community through sporting & physical activity. Nonetheless, although the club is steeped in history, Lauren Maidens, Club Manager of MYC tells us they are truly equipped for the 21st century. ‘Since the club was established almost 80 years ago it has gone through many transformations in its time. We now offer modern facilities, world class coaches along with a user-friendly customer portal where clients can easily book into program sessions,’ explains Lauren. If you are looking for an opportunity to try out the Kindergym program, MYC is hosting a ‘Kindergym Activation Day’ on the 21st January. There will be a ‘Kinder class’ for ages 2-3yrs from 9am – 10am and another ‘Pre-school/Prep class’ for children ages 4-6yrs from 10am–11am. These classes are completely free (*terms and conditions apply) and a cute little Gymnastics Queensland t-shirt is offered with each child’s registration. You can reserve your spot via the customer portal at https://app.iclasspro. com/portal/mitchie or alternatively call or email the club on manager@ mitcheltonyouthclub.org. au or call 3355 7900. * KinderGym Activation Day Terms and conditions: Local residents only. Let your kids dance their way to good health

There are many reasons parents choose to enrol their children in dance classes—for the health benefits, to expand their creativity, or simply because they love the art of dance. Dance classes can teach a child self-confidence, self-discipline, poise, and grace. But most importantly, dance is fun! A locally owned and operated dance school, Madonna’s has been delivering children’s dance classes since 1991 and has seen the development of skills and confidence in hundreds of their students over the years. ‘Dancing is so much fun for kids. It allows them to stay active in a fun and exciting way and they also develop important social and emotional skills without even realizing it,’ said Leita Gentner, Director of Madonna’s Dance School. ’Over the years I have seen kids forge lifelong friendships through dance, and grow as individuals within our studio’s.’ So, if you’re looking to increase your child’s self-esteem, improve their social skills, and help them develop great habits for life, why not enrol them in a dance class at Madonna’s today? The studio offers affordable classes from a variety of genres for children aged 2.5years to seniors. In addition, all classes are taught by experienced and qualified teachers in air-conditioned studio’s at Arana Hills. For more info, call Leita on 0401 498 800 or visit their fully equipped centre at 1156 South Pine Road, Arana Hills.

Hockey Season 2020 – Different / Good

Although the pandemic created great disruption for the whole community, including sport, the support that came from all levels and areas of government for Pine Hills Hockey Club has been huge, effective and appreciated. Combined with background work done by volunteers, ongoing field maintenance carried out by council, funding for sanitisation supplies from the Qld Government and policy direction from the Hockey Associations, the club remained strong, viable, adaptable and safe. Members remained faithful in the knowledge that they would return to play the game they love following whatever guidelines necessary. What a joyous return, and the season was truly – different , but good! When training finally resumed and play got under way the club almost did not need lights – the bright shiny happy faces of our players practically lit up the field! However, there was another surprise waiting… Pine Hills Hockey Club successfully gained the sum of $50k, through the Moreton Bay Regional Council COVID-19 Community Infrastrucure Revitalisation Grant. This allowed completion of the upgrading of field lights from halogen to LED and for the installation of a remote arming station (eSwitch). Because of this grant, members will benefit from top quality lighting and more efficient power usage that will lower electricity costs and also allow for easier, safer access for volunteers when turning on/off the lights for many years to come.

Rise to the Challenge with Phoenix Netball

Last year was a year like no other, where we all learned to pivot and netball distancing rules entered into our everyday lives. Keeping 1.5 metres apart and ‘no contact’ became normal off court.

However, Phoenix Netball Club adjusted to the situation and feel fortunate to have still participated in a season of club Netball at Downey Park. Hands and equipment were thoroughly sanitized, training schedules modified and game times altered. It was also a year when the club turned 10! This year, Phoenix Netball will extend their 10th birthday celebrations into 2021. They look forward to a new season catching up with returning players, coaches, families and welcoming new members to their wonderful club. It is in this spirit that they invite members of the community to join them! Phoenix Netball trains during the week at Tramway Street, Ferny Grove and plays Saturdays at Downey Park Netball Association, Windsor. They welcome all players 7.5 years or older (born after 30/06/2014) and support the development of their youngest players (7.5 – 10 years) in the NetSetGo (modified rules) competition and competitive competition from 11 years – Opens (born 2010 or earlier). Registrations open online mid January and an information and uniform night will be held on Thursday 28th January 5pm – 7pm at their courts. Trials for our competitive age group (11 years – Opens, born 2010 or earlier) will be held Saturday 30th January and Saturday 6th February at our courts. Gearing up for a bright 2021

Brisbane Academy of Dance is excited to open its doors for 2021 on Saturday 23rd January.

2020 was a year like no other, having to shut our doors, transform to a fully online training intuition within a day, and then learning to convert our normal way of dance into the new life that COVID 19 has given our community. As a studio we were incredibly grateful and proud of all the support and new triumphs our students were able to achieve during this time. Without this, we would have not be able to continue doing what we love as dance teachers and as a dance studio. We look forward to a bright and promising 2021. Instilling passion for dance and improving technique whilst having fun is important to Brisbane Academy of Dance. We work to provide a positive environment to grow and develop and we focus on instilling self- expression, discipline, and the hunger for dance. We welcome all members of the community to come and see our big state-of-the-art studios and join in the taster classes on our Open Day on the 23rd January from 10am - 2pm. See actual decline in turnover test. • 31 January 2021 – for JobKeeper fortnights 21 and 22 only (from 4 January 2021 and 18 January respectively 2021), we are allowing employers until 31 January 2021 to pay their employees (meet the wage condition). • The sooner you complete and submit your decline in turnover and business monthly declaration, the sooner we can process your JobKeeper payment. (Source: www.ato.gov.au) Understandably, it is difficult to shift your focus back onto business after the Christmas break. However, now is the time to consider tax planning. If you are in business, how is your business performing? Will you have a tax issue come June? It is not only just about tax you also need to understand how profitable your business has or has not been and look at the areas where improvement can be made. If you are an individual taxpayer, consider having your employer salary sacrifice some of your pre-tax wages into super (ensuring you do not exceed the cap). Is it time to consider an investment property perhaps?

Lunchbox Essentials - Balancing energy, mind & mood In 2021, Samford Health & Wellbeing Support (SHAWS) is excited to launch a new series of health and wellbeing educational events. The group will be hosting workshops with different health professionals to support you with new connections and your wellbeing. The first in the series of workshops is the 5 Top Lunchbox Essentials which kicks off on Saturday 30th January at 10am. The workshop will be presented by Alana Maxwell, Nutritionist, who will discuss health and wellbeing in the lunchbox for balanced energy, mood, and minds. Alana will be demonstrating food examples, sharing tips, and explaining how to balance energy, reduce fatigue, improve mood and behaviour with food. Alana is a qualified nutritionist and mum of three primary and teenaged children, living in Samford Valley. Alana manages a Nutrition and Wellbeing clinic for mums, teens and children at Samford Valley Medical Centre, teaches cooking programs for teenagers with ASD & ADHD and teaches private cooking classes to inspire and coach healthy dietary change. Her journey to nutrition was driven by her own digestive challenges and her children’s allergies, intolerances and behavioural challenges. Now, Alana loves supporting exhausted mums, teens and children. As life’s stresses cause deviations off the healthy pathway, Alana loves helping people navigate their journey back to healthy patterns. It is her mission to educate, coach and inspire healthy nutrition and wellbeing changes for better health, mind and mood. The workshop will take place at the Samford Community Hub, 2204 Mount Samson Rd, Samford Valley and the cost is only a $5 donation. Bookings are essential by the 25th January, as 3855 1367 spaces are limited so please email clerin@bigpond.com to reserve your spot. 18 Dallas Parade, Keperra www.keperraphysio.com.au Other future workshops hosted by SHAW’s to look forward to will be HANDS ON TREATMENT FOR ALL YOUR SPORTS, WORK based on: Finding your own sense AND LIFESTYLE NEEDS of purpose in life, How to make and maintain connections, Stress management, Health & Diet, Beauty & Personal Care, Complementary Medicines, Personal Finance & Budgeting plus many other forms of workshops to support you. NEW YEAR / NEW YOU

The importance of self care

You work hard to take care of your family and friends, but how much time do you actually invest in taking care of yourself? Making your needs a priority will help you—and the others around you—experience a better quality of life. If you frequently feel run down, stressed, overwhelmed or tired, make sure you spend some time on YOU. Here are a few health tips: Prioritise exercise Taking just 30 minutes out of your day to exercise can get your heart rate up, strengthen key muscle groups, release endorphins to give your mood a boost and help you get in shape. Eat for health Make a meal plan for yourself or just cook up larger batches of healthy recipes when you have time, so you always have something when things get busy. Your Curves coach can help with strategies for healthy eating. Sleep Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night to tackle the day with more energy and motivation. Relax on purpose Meditation and relaxation exercises may help you wind down after a busy day and feel more grounded.

Diet and Nutrition Where to start?

So you want to focus on nutrition and need some help getting started? Taking good quality, targeted nutritional supplements can give you the boost you need to set off on the right track. Whether you need some advice on ways to support muscle recovery, or feeling flat and need a boost, come and see the team at Compounding Pharmacy in Keperra to discuss a plan. Experienced pharmacists Blaine and Tahnee have a special interest in nutritional medicine and can offer you some great advice. Weight gain is usually on most people's agenda. Before you jump into the latest juice cleanse, keep in mind that there are some common underlying conditions which might be contributing. For women in the age range of 45-55, putting on weight despite doing all the right things, it could be your hormones. The team at Compounding Pharmacy invite you to come and have a 30-minute hormone consultation with Tahnee to explore if your hormones might be working against you and what you can do about it. In addition, have you been putting off discussing persistent pain in 2020 and decided you need to do something about it? Pop in and the the knowledgable pharmacists to chat about new options that have become available. They also have some of their our own compounds that are safe and effective to use alongside other medicines and therapies. Checking in with your doctor at this time is also a great idea to ensure all your screening is up to date, like skin checks, yearly blood tests, cervical and mammogram screening. All of these fantastic services are available at Keperra Compounding Pharmacy. Call 3355 3905 or email info@compoundingpharmacy. com.au

Reformer Pilates – What’s all the Fuss Over?

Pilates is the ideal way to get in shape. It’s low-impact, strengthens your core - and from one class to the next - you’ll constantly be learning and evolving. At Reform Studios, our team provides the best experience possible. Our goal is to create a studio you love and a place to learn and grow, right here in Mitchelton. Perhaps you are in your early or late 40’s. You haven’t exercised much since having your children. You feel somewhat weak and out of shape. And you constantly struggle to find the time to do something for yourself – including exercise. You want to start exercising but you worry you may hurt yourself. You worry about timing. And you feel you need guidance on where to begin. So, what sets us apart from all the other studios offering Pilates in Brisbane? Why are we the best? And why should you try us out? We Emphasize Community Generally, the exercise habit is hard to adhere to. It’s not breaking news. We’ve all done it. You start a new exercise program. You stick with it for a few weeks. You get bored. So you quit - it happens. At Reform Studios, we understand life gets in the way. But we aim to support you no matter what. We want you to succeed. Our instructors bring patience, attention, and warmth to each and every class. You’ll want to keep coming back. Each class offers an opportunity to learn and grow. After 6 months, you’ll still be learning, we all are. And we encourage our community to grow together. We keep it fun and exciting, so you won’t get bored – and most importantly, you won’t give up. We’ve Got Options Have you recently injured yourself? Or maybe you experience regular knee or back pain? The good news is we offer both fitness and clinical options. No matter where you’re starting point is, we believe you can reach all your goals and more. We believe that Pilates changes lives and we want you to become a stronger, healthier, and happier version of you.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Reform Studios!

I really look forward to my classes every week. Scott and the team are amazing instructors - they pay attention, they’re very friendly and welcoming and they understand everyone’s limitations and are able to adjust the workouts to fit in with everyone.

Sing with Serenata in 2021! Make 2021 the year you take your singing beyond

the confines of the driving seat of your car or your shower!

The Serenata Singers, a community choir based in The Gap, is holding an Open Night at 7.30pm on Monday 22nd February in the auditorium of The Gap Uniting Church, 1050 Waterworks Road. This is an excellent, COVID-safe opportunity to learn more about the choir, observe and join in a rehearsal, and meet the choir members. Even if you can’t make it to the opening night, don’t worry, the choir welcomes new members at any time! After a rough 2020, which saw the choir cancelling all performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the group is looking to make a strong bounce back in 2021. The choir, which sings a variety of popular, traditional, spiritual and show tunes, had entered 2020 with exciting plans and high expectations. In addition to a packed concert schedule, a special 50th anniversary reunion function was planned and a special ‘history page’ was added to its website. Then, just as rehearsals were getting into full swing, the COVID crisis hit. The Serenata Singers were particularly hard hit for several reasons. Choir singing is a particularly risky group activity during a pandemic and there have been a number of cases of COVID outbreaks in choirs in the USA. Furthermore, a significant number of choir members are in the ‘high risk’ category due to their age. Finally, the choir generally performs for people in retirement and aged care facilities – visits to which were, of course, curtailed. Nevertheless, you can’t keep a good choir down. Throughout the year members were kept informed and entertained through a weekly email newsletter, fortnightly Zoom rehearsals were instituted and, late in the year, COVID-safe ‘live’ rehearsals re-commenced. Choir members finally got a performance opportunity when they participated in Christmas carols at the Samford Christmas Markets. The choir is looking forward to the future and expects to enter 2021 stronger than ever. If you can hold a tune and are interested in joining them, you would be most welcome. For more information, you can check out their website https://serenatasingers.org.au/ or drop them an email at serenatasingersthegap@gmail.com

2020 - Certainly a year to reflect on

By Paul Ryan from the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club

2020 was a year of challenges for most people with the COVID 19 pandemic being likened to the N1H1 or Spanish Flu in 1918.

We were encouraged to stay at home, practice social distancing, increase our personal hygiene regime and wear masks. Businesses were forced to shut their doors, employees worked from home and schools sent children home to be home schooled. Governments and Places of Worship Churches had to hold virtual sittings and major sporting and social events were held without crowds. Community organisations were also severely affected as they could not raise funds or provide their assistance when required. While we all want to kick 2020 to the curb, I believe it will be seen as a defining year in Australia’s History. We can be proud of our Federal and State Governments, their health departments and swift actions that helped contain the virus along with the financial support offered that assisted the population and many businesses. We can be proud of health care workers who placed themselves in danger to help those who contracted the virus. In addition, our medical researchers worked around the clock to find a vaccine and workshopped ideas with others around the world. Furthermore, businesses reinvented themselves and found way to keep their staff employed, and universities and schools found new ways to engage their students minds. While COVID is not over yet, congratulations to everyone for the part they played in containing this virus. Australia had a population of 5 million in 1918 and around 15,000 people died due to Spanish Flu. Today with a population of 25.5 million to date, we have recorded 908 deaths. Finally, a big thank you to the community for their support of Lions Clubs Christmas Cake sales and thanks also to our Lions members for staffing the stalls Remember, we also need new members to help with our programs. If you are interested in community service, give me a call or send me an email, I’m happy to discuss. Email gvk@ lionsq3.org.au, call 0409 688 675 or visit www.lionsclubs. org.au

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, My husband remained with the same company for 30 years and had a very responsible and stressful position. From reports that I have had over the years it appeared that he was very good at his job and valued. He retired six months ago and I suppose he expected a golden hand shake and a big tra-la-do but it ended up being just a few drinks after work with the boys. I was sympathetic at first as he was angry and resentful at what he felt was shoddy treatment for his years of loyal service. I think he is depressed because he mopes around the house, does not want to do anything and gets upset because I want to go out, do stuff and be with friends who are certainly better company than he is at the moment. I tried to encourage him to put himself out there for part time consultancy which was something he was talking about before retirement. He used to play golf but now he says his back is not up to it. For me a future with him is looking pretty scary. Jack used to be fairly outgoing but now he is almost a recluse and it’s putting pressure on me. I thought I would be able to enjoy our retirement and now it’s just the opposite. I fear I am becoming as resentful as he is, but at him, and I don’t know how to stop it. Valerie

Dear Valerie, It certainly does appear that you have found yourself in the same space as Jack. Your story lines may be different but the reaction of resentment and its effect is just the same. Both of you feel robbed in some way. You, of the retirement you envisaged, and Jack of a sense of self worth that was not validated or as he sees it, appreciated by the company he worked for. Both of you are reacting the same way to a situation and behaviours of others that ultimately you have no control over. I am hypothesizing that what Jack perceives as a lack of recognition of himself is smacking hard on his self esteem. He may even feel that his life’s work has been wasted. Others’ approval equals self approval. Lack of it equals self doubt, if you let it. We have all been here. Think about what situations make you doubt yourself. For men an important part of their self definition and worth is held in their ability to provide, be it for their family, themselves or in valued services to an employer. Jack’s idea of this has been challenged and he is struggling with it at a time when so many other things in his life are being redefined because of that lousy thing called ‘ageing.’ I suggest a visit to your GP and counselling to support you both through this. The development of a robust self esteem to get us through these huddles requires a cultivation of honest self appraisal and a lessening dependency on the approval rating of others to feel good about who we are and for the value of what we have done. Acceptance of ‘what is’ and gratitude for what we have, along with the above goes a long way in disabling resentment. Understanding how your life’s challenges have affected you and reflecting on what you have learnt (or not) from them, may be the place to start in giving more room and the possibility of change in the space that you and Jack have found yourselves in. Keep coming from heart, listen, just listen, to really understand what this person is feeling. Rather than attempting to supply answers affirm what you have heard and understood. The sensitive use of questions that show empathy and allow deeper reflection is a more effective tool for possible change than our eternal need to use the ‘fix it’ mode. Too much fixing leads to feelings of frustration and helplessness. Both of you are faced with the choice to let resentment take the joy out of your lives or you could restate what you value in yourself, the other, your life and set yourself goals that will express these and when you make that happen, a lot of things will start changing.

Robin

The Ferny Report by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove Get Ready 2020 was a year like no other. Unlike many parts of the world, in Queensland we have been fortunate to have the ability to move around and see loved ones over Christmas and enjoy the fruits of living in the paradise which is our great state. The new year period always brings challenges, however, and this year is no different.
