Hello! My name is Katie Desmarais. I am passionate about design, people and adventure. My design journey began when my desire to serve and to create intertwined. In my first few years of college I learned how working and serving through Habitat for Humanity could bring joy to so many, including myself. Throughout the past years of design school I have experienced a wide variety of opportunities to bring my passions to life and utilize my skills to help others.

A Passage Through Tradition Fall 2014 | Third Year Studio | Funerary Design Location: Florence, Italy Requirements: Develop a mausoleum that embodies a family’s values and traditions while serving as a space of remembrance. Concept: With a focus on tradition, history and values the design concept is based on a family valued grieving tradition that breaks up the mourning process with three significant events. The first is the passing of the family member, the second is a six-month family remembrance gathering and the third is a 12-month peace gathering. The design mimics this tradition by creating space to represent the three benchmarks while encouraging connectivity and peace with moving forward. The use of repetition, direction and shape aided in the space planning to create a space that guides the grieving process, provides comfort, and celebrates life. Skills: Concept development, space planning, Google Sketchup, Rhino, 3D printing, Adobe Suite

Like running into your next door neighbor in line, the environment should provide necessary opportunities for spontaneous interactions. These casual meetings help to increase the sharing of ideas and the growth of community culture within a workplace.

How does one grow? Just as the barista learns to build your favorite drink at your local shop, one must be surrounded by elements that will teach and inspire them. This can be incorporated through many means of health & wellness, as well as different learning opportunities.

Study Abroad 38

An Exploration of Culture Winter 2014 | Study Abroad | Thailand and Cambodia A three-week journey through Southeast Asia, specifically, Thailand and Cambodia opened my eyes to the vibrancy of the world. This adventure challenged my thinking, allowed me to adapt and to embed myself into unique cultures. This experience brought zest to my design language and has provided critical insight to humanistic needs around the world. Requirements: Develop a video of the cultural experience with value as the research driver. Concept: With a focus on value, a group of classmates and I discovered the importance of the natural world in Southeast Asia. We played, meditated, climbed, biked, hiked, kayaked, and explored Thailand and Cambodia to understand Buddhist values and how they are reflected within built design and daily life.
