A Natural Advance in Cladding From our Forests to your Home

The mark of responsible forestry SGS-COC-0889 Š 1996 Forest Stewardship Council A.C.

The Best Finished Weatherboards Cortex is a 100% factory finished weatherboard system. This provides you with the best finished weatherboard, and reduces your maintenance and cost of ownership without compromising on style. Cortex has a solid, engineered, preservative treated timber core. It is a natural advance on the traditional bevelback weatherboard system that has successfully clad New Zealand homes for over a hundred years.

Why Pre-Finish? All painted cladding systems rely on the paint to protect the substrate from harsh sun and weather. The traditional method of applying a coating whilst the board is on a home means your home gets an inconsistent coating that is very reliant on the surface preparation and application method. This affects the durability of the finish and may mean more maintenance.

Cortex is designed to reduce maintenance and deliver you a lasting finish. Our factory applied Acrylic Coating System™ (ACS) delivers a consistent 120 microns to the exposed surfaces of each board. This ensures each board delivers consistent performance across its lifespan. The ACS finish delivers a good looking, smooth finish that manual application can’t match.

Innovative Assembly System Cortex effectively re-launches the traditional timber weatherboard onto the market with a smarter and more sophisticated approach. To deliver a pre-finished weatherboard we had to create an innovative assembly system that includes a unique fixing system, a weathertight concealed joint, and an improved corner jointing system. The Cortex system also comes complete with scribers, cavity closers and flashings. The system is fully documented to enable easy specification and compliance for everyone in the approval circuit. Concealed Fixing System

Improved Flashings

The concealed fixing system means there are no visible external fixings and also eliminates any exposed penetration of the 120 micron finish ensuring that the finish retains its integrity. The system uses an innovative engineered nylon bracket and a 6 gauge screw.

Along with these key innovations we have also replaced other flashings with new designs after testing existing systems. The new flashings provide improved weathertightness and moisture management whilst creating a streamlined installation.

Cortex External Corner Joint

By transferrring the traditional design into 6061 aluminium we have improved the weathertightness and created a more elegant solution by reducing the section width by half.

Concealed Vertical Joint Concealed Fixing System

The screws and brackets combine to offer better board to board assembly and installation whilst the 300mm spaced diamond fixing pattern, dramatically increases strength and wind resistance over existing nailed systems.

The concealed vertical joint provides maximum flexibility without the risk. It creates a seamless join that is also weathertight. This solution protects against moisture ingress and uses two rear brackets on either side of the joint to provide stability and strength.

Cortex Cavity Closer

Designed for Disassembly Another benefit of the new assembly system is the fact it has been designed for dissassembly. This is both environmentally sound, and provides a means to rectify any accidental wall damage over the life of the house.

External Corner Joint The corner joints provide a modern interpretation of a boxed corner. Internal and external corners are given a contemporary new look with aluminium extrusions which finish the system and add another layer of protection for at-risk junctions. Cortex Concealed Vertical Joint

From Our Forests to Your Home

Cortex is manufactured, treated, painted, and installed by one company. The engineered timber substrate is grown in our forests and is manufactured and installed on your home by us. This provides you with a single point of trust and accountability, no outs. Cortex is manufactured in Hawkes Bay by Pacific Wood Products (PWP) from sustainable NZ plantation forests that are managed under the internationally recognised Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) requirements. Cortex is your sustainable exterior cladding choice. Forests represent one of the most effective carbon sinks and their natural cycle of carbon absorbtion and oxygen production are an asset with the growing concern about climate change. Timber offers a low environmental impact material that has a proven history. Cortex is produced in a closed loop manufacturing plant where all waste is recovered and used to provide power for production and steam for drying kilns. It is truly a product with our future in mind. Cortex is produced using state of the art technology and quality control that ensures we have a consistent and stable substrate for the weatherboard core. All accessory components are produced in New Zealand by international class manfuacturers providing top quality product every time. Cortex is preservative treated to H3.1 by a production facility audited under NZS 3640. This provides a durable weatherboard core that will last. The product is factory finished with a primer, undercoat and then finished with two acrylic top coats to deliver a 120 micron finish. Cortex has an innovative, engineered assembly system that enables a quicker and more accurate installation system. Our trained installation team ensures that the product is installed to specification and signed off once complete. One of our QC team will check the installation and warranty it, the warranty and other care information will be sent to you after you have settled in or back in (if it’s a renovation). All part of our customer care programme.

Because we understand painting a house is a big decision, we’ll send you a sample of your final colour choice three weeks from production to enable you to double check your initial selection.

Our supply and install service provides support in the selection and final choice of colour. Because we understand painting a house is a big decision, we send you a painted weatherboard colour sample three weeks from production to enable you to double check you initial selection. If you change your mind at this time, we will send you a new sample to make sure you are totally happy with your final colour choice. We also provide guidance on safe durable colours. Over many years the ultra violet spectrum in sunlight breaks down the acrylic resins in all paints, which causes fading and reduces the thickness of the paint coatings. This is common to all painted surfaces regardless of product performance claims. We recommend the range of Resene ‘Cool Colours’ that are scientifically proven to perform in New Zealand’s harsh climate, protecting your investment.

FAQs Why is Cortex lower maintenance? Most weatherboards need to be painted every 7 years; Cortex is guaranteed* maintenance free (excluding washdowns) for a period of 10 years due to its consistent 120 micron dry film thickness, concealed fixing system, and integrated accessories delivering superior weather resistance.

Can I paint over Cortex? You sure can, ACS is an acrylic system and can be painted over with all major paint systems without diminishing the underlying ‘Factory Finish’.

Can I touch up Cortex? Yes, just like any other cladding product it can be touched up if there is superficial damage, in fact we even give you a test pot in case the need arises.
