SIAPS 11th Annual
Summer Summit July 21 - 26, 2014
welcome
“Welcome to the 11th Annual Summer Summit Program, “Interweaving: Connecting Our Stories” at the University of Calfornia, San Diego! We are very excited to have you here, and we look forward to meeting you and experiencing this program together. Throughout the program you will experience life in the college dorms, participate in various workshops and have the opportunity to interact with current high school and UCSD undergraduate students. You will also get the chance to participate in a special showcase performance, talent show, and much more! This year, our theme “Interweaving: Connecting Our Stories” touches on the importance of sharing our stories as a tool of empowerment and a vehicle of change. We hope to validate our intersecting identities and experiences through dialogue, activism, and group facilitation. Through the power of storytelling interwoven throughout the week, we hope to create a space of learning and growth that will acknowledge that though each person’s background and experience may differ, the struggle is similar.” Finally, we hope that you leave this program with a sense of community and with a reflection of the importance of what it means to “Connect Our Stories”. Thank you once again for being a part of this program and we hope that our long lasting relationships continue to flourish even after this program is over. Many fun and challenging experiences await you, so remember to learn something new, challenge yourself, meet new people and have tons of fun! In Solidarity, Summer Summit Planning Committee 2014

Back in high school I used to be on the wrestling team, and during the season of my junior year, I cut a ridiculous amount of weight every week. I was emotionally, physically, and mentally broken down during this time, and it took me to a new low. This experience was pretty unique because it helped me realize the determination and sacrifice it takes to be the best. Yet, it also helped me understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I think through this experience it I matured, and grew as an individual.

I am one of three proud children from an immigrant family. I find strength through the struggles I have been through and continue to go through.
chris cabading My name is Chris Cabading and I am a 5th year at UCSD. I’m a proud FilipinoAmerican who LOOOOOOOVES food! I’m extremely inactive; less physical work the better. However, one of my hobbies is playing volleyball but that’s about it. I love going on new food adventures with friends. Plus, chillin’ with friends is what I do best. And besides those two things, I’m always on tumblr ranting or reposting things or dancing in my room like I’m one of Beyonce’s backup dancers. I’M A SUPERSTAR! “I didn’t choose the Ratchet Life. The Ratchet Life chose me.” - Chris Cabading

Otherwise I commit my time to student organization such as Alternative Breaks Damar, Kaibigang Pilipin@, and Kamalayan Kollective. This upcoming year I will be a First Year Discussion Leader at Muir, an intern for SPACES, and a supervisor for UCSD’s Main Gym. My passions thrive in the realm of social justice, volunteering, and education outside of the class room. I plan to focus my professional life after college in non-profit work and community work.

I have a dog. My typical shower jam is somewhere in between the Muppets and Beyonce. A celebrity I’m crushing on right now is myself. My favorite ice cream flavor is Green tea. I am part of UCSD’s Asian and Pacific Islander Student Association (APSA) because I love being with community. Community has always been a space that challenges me to become a better student leader while also connecting me to so many awesome, generous, knowledgeable and fierce people. In my experience, I’ve learned that everyone has a beautiful story to share. My wish for summer summit is that I get to hear yours!

I am excited to work with SPACES and Summer Summit because it provides me with the opportunity to work directly with students similar to myself (first-generation college student from a low income household). Attending college was an important goal for me, but navigating the college system was not easy since I did not have family who understood the American educational system or the college application process. I benefited from programs similar to Summer Summit, and as a professional I now hope to be a resource for youth to help them with their educational aspirations. Hobbies: Some of my hobbies include cake decorating, cycling (I have done the RosaritoEnsenada Fun Ride for the past five years), hiking, and most recently stand up paddle boarding.
