Superficie-al is a refugee center that provides resources to refugees coming to Spain from the Middle East. Often times, a refugee’s only source of hope comes in the form of a cell phone. By creating an interactive surface, the building challenges the perception of media and what a building is supposed to be. The center employs an existing plaza and parking structure and, by lifting the surface, allows visitors to experience the spaces underneath. Similar to how technology creates a lifeline between the refugees and their future lives, Superficie-al provides a physical, continuous loop. Energy flows through the building as sunlight enters the space, is converted to electricity, and powers cell phones. The hope comes from the thought that the refugees no longer have to worry about the most basic sources of life and energy.

INTEGRATION utilizing passive systems Given Madrid’s hot, dry climate, this proposal aims to maximize passive strategies in order to provide a space that is comfortable year-round. By transforming the existing unused garage space and adding a large roof to make an open-air, shaded plaza, the building will only require 23% conditioned space.

LETTER BOX introduction to craft
F2018, Prof: David Pastre The letter box was designed and crafted as an introduction to wood working. The box was constructed using miter and spline joints, with the wood first being planed, joined, and glued, before the pieces were cut. The wood used is white oak and sapele. The design inspiration for the box came from wall mounted mail boxes. The details of sapele against the white oak, in the elevations, alludes to the elegance of an envelope.

CHANGING TIDES | S2017
CHANGING TIDES charleston, south carolina
S2017, Prof: Julie Wilkerson Changing Tides is a National Parks Service visitors center for the Gullah Geechee. Using the changing shore as inspiration for the form of the building, the free circulation comes from the movement of people along the shores. The forced displacement of the Gullah Geechee from Africa to the East Coast coincides with the established culture along highway 17 in the southeast. A second skin of steel and fabric are layered onto the exterior of the building, reminiscent of ships and docks; the museum acting as a safe harbor for those visiting.

The Carrefour at Clemson is a farmers market serving the local Clemson community. Special consideration was given to the typical farm stand/ flea market vernacular. From this, the structure was altered to allow a differentiation of height and light. In addition to the farm stalls, a small residence and cafe were included to strengthen the sense of community.

REFLECTION | S2016
REFLECTION genoa, italy
S2016, Prof: George Schafer presentation: American Library Association Annual Conference group: Brayton Gregory, Katie Kowalski Reflection is a library and media center located in Genoa. The geometries of the space were heavily influenced by the aqueduct-type retaining wall bordering the site. The wall’s arches influenced where each bay was located within the library, creating programmed spaces. The concept of the library was primarily reflection. An underground river would be brought to the surface, allowing for literal reflection of the water and surfaces. Programmed reading spaces, within the core of the building, would be wifi free. These reading spaces bring personal reflection to the space, allowing individual time amongst the busy community.

COMMUNITY chicago, illinois
F2015, Prof: Robert Bruhns Community is a mixed use apartment complex. The first two floors are mostly public, with the additional five floors being private and raised off the ground. Each apartment stands individually, providing each tenant with private exterior space as well as shared space. The layered courtyards took shape from the typical u-shaped housing in chicago. The result provides a community atmosphere without loosing a sense of privacy.

Woodland Peace is a visitors center and retreat located in the Woodland Cemetery. In response to the rich history of campus, the visitors center houses a museum on the lower level with a small library and reflection room on the second level. The geometry corresponded to the verticality of the surrounding pine trees. Clerestories and windows were added to provide light. Bamboo was installed in planters to maintain and filter the light. Steel was chosen as a cladding in response to the colors of campus in the surrounding brick and clay.

S2019, Prof: Ufuk Ersoy, Dustin Albright Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries (CEDC) group: Andrew Collins, Katie Kowalski Poze is a living learning center being proposed for the mountainous village of Cange. Situated along the existing Route 3, the center interacts with this busy street. The street extends into the terrain of the site, creating terraces that act as both floor plates and roof plates. The conditions of the street as a market, place of interaction, and source of transportation also extend into the program of the spaces. The building will be cooled using natural ventilation and a solar chimney. Artificial lighting and air conditioning will be supplied by solar panels. Water will be collected from the site and stored for future use, as a connection to fresh and clean water is an important feature in Cange.
