TYPEFACE BOOK Editorial Design, Illustrator, InDesign
GOAL The National Park Typeface Booklet is a visual examination of the National Park typeface which was created by the Design Outside (DO) Studio in 2012. It was designed in InDesign with elements brought in from Illustrator and goes in depth into exploring the history and anatomy of the typeface while celebrating America’s National Parks.
PROCESS I knew from the beginning that the illustrations had to stand out from the first moment the viewer looks at the booklet. I came up with the dye-cut design to showcase a little “teaser” of each page on the cover to entice the viewer to flip through and reveal the rest of the illustrations and my content. Printing was definitely one of the biggest challenges I faced with this project. My process included a lot of trial-and-error and prototyping. I spent more time sketching out my ideas by hand and prototyping them with blank paper than I did actually designing on the computer.

HIDDEN PVD Web Design, Content Management, Wordpress
GOAL Hidden Providence is a blog about the weird and unusual historical sights/landmarks that are in the city of Providence. I was inspired by the delightfully strange and unusual history of Providence, RI. The style of the blog reflects that strange, unusual feeling that goes hand in hand with the city of Providence. All of the colors and typefaces in the site have been inspired by what I’ve seen around the city since moving there in 2018. The layout and design showcases the content and posts in an organized and easy to navigate way.
PROCESS While creating the blog, my biggest challenge was operating within the confines of Wordpress and the Twentytwenty theme. There were limited customizable options so I had to make every design decision count. My main goal was to make the design and layout of the blog yield itself to the content. I wanted the writing, information, and imagery to be the focal point and the visual styles would just compliment it. Additionally, all of the content in the site, including photography, had to be completely original.

THE RED PLANT Logo Design, Branding, InDesign
GOAL The Red Plant is a fictional vegan, sustainable restaurant which required branding and a menu design. The logo was created in Illustrator but I used InDesign to design the menu, business cards and subsequent grid layouts. To ensure that my design was as clean as possible I utilized a 3 column grid for my content which was all aligned to a consistent baseline grid.
PROCESS I knew that the Red Plant would be a vegan restaurant which prides itself on being ethical and sustainable. So obviously, I needed to design to a very specific audience. The typefaces, materials and colors I choose highlight the core values of the brand - the menu would be printed on recycled paper and there wouldn’t be any bright flashy colors that remind the viewer of big corporate chains. Every design decision was carefully made to reflect the sustainable practices of the Red Plant.

GRANITE Editorial Design, InDesign, Typography
GOAL Granite is a fictional minizine about New Hampshire (the Granite State). Each issue focuses on a different aspect of the state whether it be a geographical region, town, attraction, historical aspect, etc. This issue was about the state’s capitol, Concord, which happens to be where I grew up.
PROCESS Content was king with this project; I was required to include an article, interview, advertisement and original illustration as well as a JWU ad on the back cover that adhered to the school’s graphic standards and style guide. I did a lot of research and looked at examples of other magazines to try and get an idea of how to lay out my text. Additionally, I was also very inspired by New Hampshire itself. The audience for this minizine would be people like me, who are from New Hampshire or have a personal attachment to it. So, I wanted all my design decisions to be inspired by the state and to speak to it’s history, land, and charm.

VAGOR & TREK Web Design, UX Design, HTML & CSS
GOAL VAGOR is a fictional hotel chain that’s geared toward adventurous travelers and explorers. Every aspect of their online presence is dedicated to enriching your vacation/ travel experience. I was tasked with designing their website in a way that made all their information easy to navigate and inviting for potential customers.
PROCESS The hypothetical audience for this company would be avid travelers. To them, experience is the most important thing. I had to keep that in mind while working on this project, it needed to be easy to navigate but it also needed to provide a fun, memorable precursor to the user’s vacation. The imagery and colors suggest a sense of adventure and they lead the user down the page. I designed the site and accompanying mobile app completely from scratch using HTML and CSS. I also used Foundation to help me with grid layouts and other aspects of the site.

SYNTAX & EAVES Print, Illustrator, Typography
GOAL These type posters were designed to showcase two specific fonts: the humanist sans serif Syntax, and the tranitional serif Mrs. Eaves. Each poster was designed to give the typefaces a unique style while also including a brief history of the font and it’s typography anatomy. PROCESS With this project, I really wanted to explore new typefaces and broaden my horizons which is why I chose the fonts, Syntax and Mrs. Eaves. They are both very well designed but not as popular or well known as Helvetica or Baskerville. Each poster showcases the typeface as well as creating a unique, visual style for the font. It was important that my research for this piece was incredibly thorough. I really needed to understand each typeface so I could design the poster and have it really fit with the aesthetic of the font.

FOCUS & STAY CALM Typography, Hand drawn, Illustrator
GOAL Focus and Stay Calm is a piece that visually explores the principles of design and the use of typography within one quote. At first, it was intended to be a hand drawn piece but, while I was assembling my portfolio I decided to revisit the piece and redesign it digitally.
PROCESS The original piece had to be completely done by hand - nothing was to be designed on a computer. But, it also had to include a minimum of 5 different fonts, which took a lot of planning. It’s no small feat to find 5 fonts that don’t clash and design them in a way that compliment each other. It took a lot of sketching and planning beforehand and when it came time to redesign it digitally I looked back at my original sketches and research for reference. I kept many of the same design elements I used to create the original drawing in my resdesign.

PADDLING PARK Logo Design, Branding, InDesign, Illustrator
GOAL The National Park Typeface Booklet is a visual examination of the National Park typeface which was created by the Design Outside (DO) Studio in 2012. It was designed in InDesign with elements brought in from Illustrator and goes in depth into exploring the history and anatomy of the typeface while celebrating America’s National Parks.
PROCESS The goal of this project was to design a typemark for a fictional company of our choosing and create a brand around it. I created the fictional company Paddling Park - it’s a nature park that preserves ducks and their natural habitats. I designed the logo on Illustrator and wanted it to draw people in and make it seem like Paddling Park is a great place to come if you want to relax, learn or become more connected with nature.
