These artifacts will be accessed for various exhibits throughout the life of the Gallery Tower and the artifacts will be rotated throughout the facility into various exhibitions in the designated galleries. Through visiting artists and designers, the Gallery Tower will offer after school youth, intermediate, and professional development programs for students, adults, professionals, and educators with programs after-school and for senior citizens in partnership with area community organizations.

This detail study allowed for the exploration of the exterior envelope and faรงade of an existing building. Research through construction photography, personal observation, and basic line drawings helped to recreate the atrium space of 41 Cooper Square, in a large detail model as well as a series of detail drawings. Chicago Gallery Priest river community and recreation center will be the catalyst for this struggling north Idaho lumber town to revive itself from a decreasing job market and struggling economy. Sited on the under utilized industrial brown-field site of the Priest River waterfront, this project will revitalize the community to take part in their redevelopment by providing a place where the community can once again gather and discuss issues related to the area.

elliptigo Passive strategies for design include vegetative panels along the exterior faรงade to help insulate and manage storm water. The rock climbing tower also acts as stack ventilation for the recreation spaces. Glazing is positioned to allow for pristine views of the river as well as optimal natural daylight throughout the space with operable louvers of shading devices.

Sliding storage lockers keep test bikes out of the way perched on industrial C hangers, yet easily accessible when needed for a test ride with potential clients. Translucent acrylic panels on individual sliding tracks allow for an area of the workspace to be isolated for meetings & collaboration, yet provide an open studio space when the doors are collapsed.

Experiencing more than four years of diligent design and prototype development, the ElliptiGO 8S bicycle has become the world’s first outdoor elliptical bicycle. This type of bike allows the user to engage in a low impact, high intensity workout, similar to that achieved on a normal elliptical machine. This emerging company based out of Solana Beach, California, needed a work environment for its employees that is as adaptable and flexible as their product itself. Moveable partition walls, sliding storage for test bikes, and an open floor plan provide the needed support for the ElliptiGO staff.

Perforated, corrugated steel acts as a partition envelope throughout the office space, providing a physical barrier from the customer, yet maintaining a semi transparent visual barrier for privacy. This allows contact for the marketing department and engineers throughout various stages of product development and client involvement

Chicago Gallery As homelessness is a drastically rising epidemic in our country, designers have an ever-increasing responsibility to help bring dignity to those finding themselves living this unfortunate way of life by providing humane areas of shelter. Sited in Chinatown Park, the object was to create a small-scale shelter that provides a sense of privacy while being exposed in the public eye of Washington D.C. These units are designed to sleep an individual comfortably, along with space for personal belongings. The solid roof and wall system is composed of a steel-framed eco-resin polycarbonate material; containing at least 40% post consumer recycled material. The wall portion system includes LED light strips to gently illuminate the wall and provide visual interest and safety throughout the night. These units are designed to be independent throughout the urban landscape or be arranged in a variety of different ways to form a cluster.

Exquisite New York is the culmination of the University of Idaho Summer Seminar in Manhattan. The book is a collection of “Living” and “Still” fragments taken from the cultural immersion in the city. These fragments include photographs, sketches, watercolor, poems, and quotes collected by the students. My role in this project was as Graphic Editor; designing the cover, spread layout, final photo editing, and composition of the book. http://issuu.com/katieolin/docs/nyc_final

This graphic is a comparative analysis of two landscapes in Moscow, Idaho, using mapping as a vehicle of discovery. The two areas compared in this graphic include Main Street, Moscow, Idaho, and a section of ID-HWY 8 near the Idaho-Washington border. The graphic compares the food and alcohol consumption of Moscow patrons by analyzing the geographical location of each business, the maximum occupancy of each establishment, peak business hours, and total hours of operation. Data collected by Veronica Finney and Holly Colvin.

elliptigo The College of Art and Architecture hosts many architects and design professionals throughout each academic semester. As a student graphic communications correspondent, my responsibility includes providing awareness to students and faculty of upcoming lectures. Recently I have been responsible for creating overall lecture series posters and individual flyers for the visiting professionals for Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 as well as an awareness postcard to be distributed to Alumni of the College.

I have always had an intense interest and passion for the natural world. As a child, I was lucky to experience and discover the vast expanse of wilderness that Idaho’s geography has to offer. I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor’s of Science in Architecture, May 2010, and am now pursuing my Masters of Architecture, as well as LEED AP certification.

The context of my life experiences has provided me with a deep and unyielding respect for the wild places still left in the world. My curiosity for the built environment has taught me to consider space and form related to the human experience, as well as a consciousness that specific design choices can have a serious impact upon the world, positive or negative, built and natural alike. I am interested in how the natural world can be successfully integrated into the current and future built environments to create sustainable and responsible design for the future of urban context.
