Part 4 typography Learning Log

“strictly speaking typography refers to the mechanical reproduction of words through printing, while lettering implies hand rendered type, writing and calligraphy” Gutenberg press - moved from hand written to something that could be continuously reproduced (the benefit of movable type. Co-incided with the unification of the english language whereby grammar, spelling and lettering were all standardised. “Type is the name of the individual metal letters that were used in letterpress printing, these letters were cast in metal blocks with the letter in reverse on the top. Fonts are the characters in a given typeface, for example all the uppercase and lowercase letters, punctuation and symbols. Fonts come in different sizes and are measured by point size (usually written as pt). Typefaces group together fonts that are of a related design. Times New Roman is a well known typeface that will include italic and bold, uppercase, lowercase, numerals and all the different sizes of fonts it comes in. Uppercase letters are CAPITAL letters and lowercase are small letters, so named because metal type was arranged in cabinets so that it was easy to pick out letters. Capitals were in the upper cabinet or case and the small letters were in the lower case. Typography focuses on both the design of typefaces and their day-today use, while typesetting is the act of using type to create words, sentences and lines of text.” all notes from the learning guide What areas of this brief reading to I want to look into further? - What benefits were there to the Gutenberg Press other than just being able to now print things on mass? - Was the alphabet not something that was already standardised at this point? How did the alphabet develop? Obviously there is also the Roman alphabet and you have examples like th Egyptian Hieroglyphics. - When did this distinction between writing and typography start emerging? Or the change in attitude and unification between printing and type? They now seem to be two very distinc

research point “Writing is the visual counterpart of speech. Marks, symbols, pictures, or letters drawn or written upon a surface of substrate became a graphic counterpart of the spoken word or unspoken thought. The limitations of speech include the fallibility of human memory and an immediacy of expression that cannot transcend time and place. Until the electronic age, spoken words vanished without a trace, while written words remained. The invention of writing brought people the luster of civilization and made it possible to preserve hard-won knowledge, experiences, and thoughts.” (page 6)

It started off as a writing form called Cuneiform and the limitations of this were noted so it became a style of writing called rebus writing whreby ‘pictures and/or pictographs represeted words and syllables with the same or similar sound as the object depicted’. (page 11) This only expanded the possibilities of what a symbol could mean and the language, after being simplified by the Assyrians, still had 560 signs. This sounds a lot but in 1989, there were 171, 476 full entries of current words in the Oxford English Dictionary, there were also 47,156 obsolete words.

Interestingly, on some of the early examples that can be found, instead of writing from left to right in horizontal lines, the writer would start in the top right hand column and work their way down the page. In some languages it is read from right to left however, this style has evidentally grown since pictographs and basic symbols were used. There were some limitations to this though whereby images couldn’t ‘function in the same way as their speech’ so there was a need to represent these words that could not be drawn, or had multiple interpretations. (page 9)

As the Oxford English Dictionary explains though, it is hard to actually count the words. If a word has two meanings does this count as one or two words? Does the plural form of a word count as an additional word? Equally, many medical and scientific terms aren’t English. English borrows many words from the French, Italians, the language shares many words with the Germans and Dutch and Latin words are used in Law. Does these words all count as well? Since 1989, it is also save to say that there have been a lot of slang words appear. Is ‘peng’ actually a word? Then how do we now characterise words that are no longer in use?

Meggs, P. and Purvis, A. W. (2016) Meggs’ history of graphic design. Hoboken, New Jersey: Wiley. Oxford English Dictionary - https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/explore/how-many-words-are-there-in-theenglish-language/

“Writing enabled society to stabilize itself under the rule of law. Measurements and weights were standardized and guaranteed by written inscription. Law codes, such as the Code of Hammurabi, who reigned from 1792 to 1750 BE, spelled out crimes and their punishments, thus establishing social order and justice...Written in a precise style, harsh penalties were expressed with clarity and brevity.” (page 11) There were common examples that many people are aware of in terms of a symbol based language, such as Egyptian hieroglyphics. The story in regards to how we can now understand these symbols is an interesting one. Previously, they were looked at for the aesthetics, and it was until “in 1798, Napoleon conducted an expedition to Egypt in an effort to sever the English land route to India. In August 1799, his troops were digging a foundation of an addition to the fortification in the Egyptian town of Rosetta, which they were occupying. A black slab was unearthed bearing an inscription in two languages and three scripts: Egyptian hieroglyphics, Egyptian demotic script, and Greek...Scholars realized that the inscription was probably the same in the three languages and the translation efforts began” (page 12). The hieroglyphic language was constructed through a collection if ‘pictograms that depicted objects or beings. These were combined to designate actual ideas, phonograms denoting sounds and determinatives identifying categories.’ (page 15) In some ways this can now look at how we create sounds and meanings through language. Categories are defined through gendered items in German. Illustrated languages continued to develop with the first alphabet, although the inventors are unkown, it was terms the ‘North Semitic writing’ as it was found in the North area of the Semitic people region. Interestingly, as the people began to travel, known as the Phoenicians, as did their ideas of languge. Spreading their concepts and learning from others meant that ideas from the Egyptian’s Hieroglyphics were enforced into their own language concept. Equally, Cuneiform was also absorbed. The alphabets that formed were incredibly abstract in comparison to the alphabet that we have now formed. “From a graphic design standpoint, the Greeks applied geometric structure and order to the uneven Phoenician characters, converting them into art forms of great harmony and beauty. The written form of Greek, as shown in ‘The Persians’ by Timotheus, has a visual order and balance as the letters move along a baseline in an even repetition of form and space. The letters and their component strokes are somewhat standardized because a system or hoizontal, vertical, curved and diagonal strokes is used.” (page 27)

At one point, the Greeks even used a method of reading called ‘boustrophedon’ whereby one line was read right to left, then the next was left to right, and then back to right and left. The Greek language, when it first developed from the Phoenician style looked like, as we would now describe them, as upper case letters. They were based upon geometric shapes but later it developed into a more rounded structure called ‘unicals’. This required fewer strokes. “The latin alphabet came to the Romans from Greece by way of the ancient Etruscans....the latin alphabet contained twenty-one letters.” (page 29) Letters were slowly added to the alphabet until it got to the 26 that we now know. Each one was designed with a specific purpose and some were extensions of others.

‘Roman inscriptions were designed for great beauty and permanence. The simple geometric lines of the ‘capitalis monumentalis’ (monumental capitals) were drawn in thick and thin strokes, with organically unified straight and curved lines. Each letterform was designed to become one form rather than merely the sum of its parts. Careful attention was given to the shapes of spaces inside and between the letters. A Roman inscription became a sequence of linear geometric forms adapted from the square, triangle, and circle. Combined into an inscription, these letterforms molded the negative shapes around and between theme into ameasure graphic melody of spatial forms, achieving an eternal wholeness.’ (page 31)

Although these notes only provide a brief history of the use of typography, it has been interesting to look at the origins of the alphabet. The bold geometric lines of the Roman fonts is something that has inspired other artists to take on block structures and the basic line form to create more fonts.

It is difficult to completely reinvent the alphabet, something that is so universally understood, however, I wanted to look at ways in which the letters are constructed to see if there are any other ways of expressing each letter or maybe creating a typeface that is inspired by the Roman fonts.

There were a couple of other areas that interested me from the initial reading so I wanted to research a little more into these areas and leave them with the possibility of exploring them further throughout this learning log. When can we say the attitude towards typography and printing changed? Was it when the alphabet was created in its most recent form? When the Gutenberg Press was created? I don’t think that either of these truly acted as the change that we now have as designers in regards to how we treat fonts. To look at this view I found an essay that perfectly sums it up: “If modernity was implicit in printing, it was not fully or immediately realized by Gutenberg’s invention. Printing enabled modernity, but evidence of recognizably modern attitudes in typography only began to emerge some 250 years after its introduction. The decisive evidence that allows this judgement is of the readiness to articulate knowledge and consciousness.” (page 8) This isn’t to disregard the importance of the invention of the Gutenberg Press though. It allowed for massproduction of works, the standardisation of not only the grammar and language we use, but the format in terms of paper size and margin use. For the first time, a specific page could be referenced. If you wanted to share an idea with someone else, you could tell them to read page 10, previously this wouldn’t have been the case and you would have had to show them your copy to know where this idea is presented. As a result, editions could now be created where information could be added or eliminated before being republished. All of this did effect the printing world, however, the typographic world started developing afterwards as a result of these changes. Although it was great for printers to be able to mass produce writings that would enable the sharing of knowledge, there were difficulties that came with this. There was now more of a separation between the creator and his or her work. The painful task of creating a bible by hand for example, was a long one but you could appreciate the craftsmanship within this. Now, there were multiple creators who didn’t share the same passion for this one piece of work and they probably didn’t know each other. A further split happened when the role of editor was taken ‘away from the workshop and into what would become the publisher’s office’ (page 9). As this division took place ‘printing began to be opened up: its secrets started to be articulated’ (page 9). Previously, printers wouldn’t reveal their secrets so that other workers couldn’t copy their designs or take work from them. However, as more people became involved, it meant that there were more people that had to be told.

“One might also suggest, as a working definition, that this is the point at which ‘printing’ separates from ‘typography’. This distinction of terms has been latent in discussion of the matter since Joseph Moxon’s ‘Mechanik exercises’ was published at the end of the seventeenth century, but has never been fully explained. To over-simplify, the difference is between inarticulate practice with the materials of production (‘printing’), and conscious shaping of the product, by instruction (‘typography’)...when printing becomes typography is also when printing becomes modern. Printing becomes modern with the spreading of knowledge about itself: with the published description of its pracitces; with the classification of its materials and processes; with co-ordination of dimensions of materials, enabling their exchange and better conjunction; with the establishment of a record of its history.” (page 9) There are obbiously different ways in which printing has been used over the years however, there was a very standardised font that was used. The printing method didn’t have the varying options that we now have with fonts and their font families and I think this has to be an imporant distinction to establish between printing and typography. Project - The visual word

What to I think I will be exploring here?

- The way in which a word is constructed and the effects that font choices can have on this. - The various ways in which a word can be presented to us as an audience and how this effects the way in which it is perceived. - Maybe even juxtaposition, how can we try and contradict what a word is saying through the way in which we present it as a designer.

What skills do I want to develop?

- I want to start developing my understanding of typography and the way in which it can change the perception that the audience has of the text. - Here I think it will be less about technical skills in terms of software but something more in regards to developing knowledge and understanding of fonts. - I don’t think I will go straight into looking at fonts here, maybe some initial experimentation, but for experimentation to be successful, it needs to be informed so this will be a project focusing on this and developing an understanding in regards to how the visual word is presented.

What do I need to make sure that I focus on during my research? - The composition of text. - Noticing how the spacing can effect our perception of text. - The amount of white space that appears and the effect this has also needs to be noted.

Exercise - Playing with Words

What have I learnt from this?

- The shapes that are formed by the individual letters have their own meaning. Not only for the shape that they form but the shape that the remaining white space forms. It is this meaning that helps to change our perceptions of words or reaffirm their meaning. - On the paper examples, the colour and variations of text were not possible to experiment with. But each colour as part of the digital experiments have their own subjective meaning, something that I already understood, but I wasn’t aware of it so much with individual words. Experimenting with colours on singular words, along with looking at the way meaning is created through shapes and blank space, the use of colour and its potential was something that I am understanding more and more about. - Scale was something that I played with a little but I didn’t experiment with it to its full potential I don’t think. The scale has been selected in order to create impact instead of to be objective to any kind of true scale. What I began to realise though was how scale can impact the reader’s comfort towards a word. With some of them, if the word was larger I felt slightly uncomfortable. Snowy, for example, used varying sized letters and some sitted better than others, this was partly due to the comfort levels but considering I personally don’t like snow, I think this was being portrayed subconsciously through some of my choices. - Although there is obviously more blank space compared to occupied space in some of the digital examples, there is still a very static composition on show. This highlights that the occupied to blank space ratio is not always going to create depth if one is greater than the other. - Yes blank space can give the word meaning, but when blank space turns into psychological space, it becomes more powerful. The paper experiments don’t have this issue in the same way as there is a lot of psychological space. Not only is there a lot more blank space, but this blank space is so extensive that the shapes and space in general leaves the audience with a lot of space to subconsciously think about the word and ‘fill in the blanks’ with their own connections to the word.

The Anatomy of a Typeface

What to I think I will be exploring here?

- How a typeface is constructed as a whole but also how individual elements are constructed (letters, symbols and numbers) - How the construction of a typeface influences the way in which it is read. - How the different embellishments on a typeface and the different appearances of it change our perception of the text that is being read.

What skills do I want to develop?

- I want to be able to analyse fonts a lot closer and understand how the small changes can perhaps give off a different perception to the audience. - I want to be able to experiment more with fonts. Previously, I have only experimented with one typeface instead of the ways in which they are combined and the hierarchy that can be created through the varying fonts. - Although I try and avoid copying other people’s designs, I think layouts here are going to be a strong aspect for me to take inspiration from. It is copying them, but identifying the individual elements, the anatomy of the structure as well as the font, to then know how this anatomy can then be adjusted to a purpose. - I want to develop my understanding for different typefaces and how they can be used in different circumstances and for different audiences. Often I overlook fonts and I need to remember that these too have a target audience.

What do I need to make sure that I focus on during my research?

- The way in which the fonts are paired - looking at the weight, spacing, height, if they are the same font family, the different variations of a font family etc. - The way in which the fonts are used to target the specific audience - The way in which each font is constructed and what compliments the font combinations.

Research Point Varying characters within the basic Minion Pro Font: (This is a Serif font)

- how are the symbols constructed alongside the fonts? Are they easy to read? Have they been considered as much as the lettering? Do they exist at all? Are the embellishments the same? Do the characteristics of the font flow as well in the symbols as it does in the lettering?

On some occasions, and this is more evident on the StrongArm font, the symbols have not been considered alongside the typeface as the symbols are incredibly hard to read. Whereas, something like the American Typewriter font, this is still easy to read, the characteristics of the font follow through on all symbols that I have found and the embellishments vary very little. One font that perhaps is successful in some ways and not succcessful in others is Evogria, GoBold Extra 1 also falls in this catefory though. The weight of the lettering means that some symbols have a lot of contrast in terms of how heavy they appear. When they are then placed next to each other, although elements of the typeface are recognisable between each element, loking at it, some of the letters also don’t seem to fit which creates inconsistency in terms of the viewer’s reading experience as it becomes disjointed and harder to read in a smooth line for the eye.

Part 2 of the Research point - identifying magazine fonts

Focus here - identify the fonts that we see on a regular basis. What characteristics make them stand out from the

rest. Perhaps look into the different variations available for each font, how they are paired and what made the designers pick this font over other similar ones (use www.indentifont.com to identify which alternative ones could have been used)

The Vogue logo uses the Didot font, this also features throughout their magazine. What makes this font stand out? The way light and shadow is used in photography to highlight and mask different areas, this font uses pairings of heavily weighted lines and lighter lines in order to ease the eye around the curves. It works well as a title font without being too dominant but it can still demand the attention of the audience and be easily paired with most fonts. What other variations are available? There are 10 variations available within this family. What is it paired with? Vogue also use the Paris font by Moshik Nadav as well as more slightly lighter weighted fonts. I want to explore each combination later on so that I can fully deconstruct this typeface. Why this font? This font will dominate a cover when put at the right size but it will never dominate so much that you won’t read any other information on the cover. It balances well with many fonts as well as images which makes it the ideal font for a logo and then headings further on in the magazine.

What characterises the VOGUE font?

- Strong, straight embellishments, take the Bodoni Book font for example, on the V the lines dip slightly, the Vogue font doesn’t do this. - The G is slightly elongated, it doesn’t form a perfect circle, similar with the O it is more oval than circular. - The G also has a wide descender, it doesn’t just curve, it also then meets the base line of the other letters.

Why didn’t the other fonts work?

As I was noticing the details more and more, I noticed that none of these fonts had fully hit the mark as to what font the magazine uses. The conclusion came that the G was the hardest character to match and the only suggestion that I had found that matched was Didot, the height wasn’t quite right but this is something that could easily be changed (below with a vertical scale of 130%). The weight also wasn’t quite right on the regular version so I used the bold option from the same family and this added the additional weight that was missing from the logo.

VOGUE

A rounded font on this cover wouldn’t work as effectively. Models are known to be tall and designs often highlight this. Using a taller font, instead of a more rounded one like Bodoni URW Regular, helps to elongate the frame even more which is then matched by the other font choices that are made on the cover.

Are these fonts used anywhere else? Do they have a similar purpose?

Various versions of the Didot font exist, VOGUE has been using it since 1955, America’s next top model use it in its regular lettering (compared to the capitalised version in Vogue) and CBS have also had their own version commissioned. The extensive nature of these purposes shows that there is no set way in which a font can be used. Elle Magazine has also used the Didot font yet it manages to estbalish a very different identity to Vogue. How is this done?

Elle uses the same font but elongates it even more, this gives the font quite a different viewing experience. However, I think that really, what makes us perceive the fonts to be completely different is through two things. One, the actual word. The letters that characterise VOGUE are the G and V. The Elle logo is characterised by the L. Because these letters don’t appear in the other’s name, we aren’t able to build these connections between the two magazines. Two, the fonts that each magazine uses around the logo. Elle magazine uses heavier weighted fonts, somthing the VOGUE avoids doing. Instead the VOGUE design uses very minimal fonts, they are all very similar font style but instead they use different sizes, italics and colours to create a hierarchy. Elle, instead of creating a hierarchy through the same font family but using bold and italics, this time just multiple different, regular fonts are used. Your eye darts around the Elle cover more as there is so much information which does confuse the eye more than VOGUE does.

Why does the Didot font work in both magazines?

ELLE

Sarah Hyndman, a writer and typographer, did a survey in order to analyse how we perceive fonts in terms of price. Some fonts we look at will ooze luxury and make you want to own this expensive product, even if it costs £1. Other fonts, can look cheap and you don’t want to spend that £100 because the font doesn’t make it look a luxurious as the other £1 product. Although this isn’t a conscious choice that we make, it is something that we subconsciously do with everything. This is where the importance of visual language comes in. As designers, we need to know what connections people are going to make when they view our designs and this is all part of the research process. As part of the survey, Hyndman asked 368 to rate which font they would suggest looked cheapest and which appeared the most expensive. The conclusions came in that: “bold typefaces with rounder terminals appear cheaper, whereas lighter weights, serifs, and contrasts are rated appear more expensive”. Didot was rated the most expensive and the Cocon Bold font was rated the cheapest. Hyndman commented on her findings: “I think cultural associations have a great deal of impact. We see these styles used repeatedly in a similar context, which reinforces the links...I imagine the delicacy of the detail is also associated with craftsmanship, skill, and quality.” And “I also hadn’t expected VAG Rounded Light to be rated as so cheap, as light weight typefaces generally score as nearer to the expensive end of the scale. Clearly the rounded terminals override the light weight of the typeface.” Quotes taken from https://qz.com/555894/the-worlds-most-expensive-looking-font-might-surprise-you/

Both magazines go on to use very similar fonts by designer Moshik Nadav, they appear very similar however, upon closer ispection of the available tail details, it is clear that in fact Elle magazine uses the Paris typefacae and Vogue uses the Lingerie Typeface.

Elle Magazine

What was the focus of this research point?

Reminder - identify the fonts that we see on a regular basis. What characteristics make them stand out from the rest. Perhaps look into the different variations available for each font, how they are paired and what made the designers pick this font over other similar ones (use www.indentifont.com to identify which alternative ones could have been used)

So what have I learnt from doing this?

- It is the small details that make the differences between fonts. Fonts can appear the same yet be so different in terms of the context they are placed in or the small details on the tails of letters can alter the way we view a font. - There are cultural associations linked to text that we have before even reading the text. Each font gives off it’s own identity in terms of what it is paired with but Hyndman’s study shows that when it is taken back down to basics, some fonts already have the preconceptions that it is cheap or expensive. - A font doesn’t just have to be changed between bold and italics to look completely different, the vertical scale can completely change the way a font appears. Changing the G from a curved letter to an oval characterised the way the Vogue logo has been established since 1955.

Time to look at another magazine

Now using Identifont.com to identify a font from a magazine instead of using a search engine to find out! What characterises the font I am looking at?

I am yet to identify this typeface but in order to do this, a few questions need to be answered first. What makes this font stand out? The bold strong lines of the logo are mirrored within the rest of the fonts that are on the front cover, because there are only two used and they are the same font family. The way hierarchy is created is through the text size and colour, as well as the individual boxes to separate stories.

What other variations are available? Clearly there are already 2 that I can establish from the front cover, any further variations are not yet clear. What is it paired with? As mentioned above, the cover only uses the one font. This is a bold, capitalised font that is Serif in nature. It doesn’t try to stylise the stories and instead lets the writing do the talking instead of having too much of a preconception about the font by using something that may look cheaper. In my opinion, this is quite a cheap font but when compared to Didot, the master of expensive fonts, anything will.

The website’s suggestions for the main font were as follows:

Futura Condensed Bold

Futura Futuris Bold

Twentieth Century Bold

Twentieth Century Condensed

Futura PT Condensed Bold

Futura PT Condensed

Futura Futuris Extra Bold

OK!

Twentieth Century Condensed Bold

Futura Condensed Bold

Twentieth Century Condensed Bold

Luckily, having a full magazine meant that I was able to answer the questions accurately for the body text. However, as explained on the next page, I struggled to still find a match.

Interestingly, there are no close matches for trying to find the font for the main chunk of text inside the magazine. However, the closest match is:

Iridium Although the capital J isn’t right, this is the closest font I could find.

Other suggestions included:

It is clear that none of these fonts are the right one for the body text of OK magazine. This is where search enginges like this one aren’t always helpful as the results can vary so much.

What have I learnt from this so far?

- That although some fonts look very similar, there are minor differences between them and it is these small differences that can make the world of difference between why you pick one font over another. - That when selecting a font it is important to look at the whole font instead of just the letters you think you will use. Because if you fall in love with a font, want to continue using it before finding out that it has very limiting symbols, it can cause issues, especially when a client has also fallen in love with the font. - When pairing fonts, it doesn’t have to be two different contrasting ones, a really interesting dynamic is created between the capitals of a font for one line, and the lower case lettering for another line. - Typography is one of the easiest ways to create visual hierarchy. Looking at the magazine covers, your eye is drawn to the size, the different fonts and the different colours. Each one is carefully balanced, something I am sure I will experiment with later on, in order to guide the reader through the text in a specific order.

What other fonts are around me? I mentioned before that fonts can look very similar, but they often have very small differences between them. This is the case with many fonts as commericially they can get copyrighted. The Game of Thrones font for example is one that will have been copyrighted just for the franchise. I do have a version of the font, and it is incredibly close, but to the untrained eye, no one would know any differently. They would think that this is the same font when in fact it isn’t. I was travelling around London and looking at the numerous advertisements that were put in the Underground station. One font that particularly stood out to me was the poster for ‘The Lion King’. This poster isn’t the exact same one that I saw, there were too many people to try and take a photo on the underground! But it started making me think of what other fonts am I aware of that look similar to this? So first off to identify the font...after a little bit of a Google search, someone suggested Lithos. It is similar but not quite the right font, of course this would be copyrighted. I guess this makes Lithos the first similar font though. Another similar font is Perciles Pro.

What fonts do Social Media platforms that I use use?

First off it is important to note that the font changes depending on the platform of the device being use as different devices have different fonts available. - Facebook: MAC is San Francisco and Android is Roboto -Twitter: MAC is Helvetica Neue and Android is Roboto -Instagram: MAC is San Francisco and Android is Roboto. -Snapchat: MAC is Avenir Next and Android is Roboto -Pinterest: Mac is San Francisco and Android is Roboto. I expected a lot more variation! Normally you would expect something different from each platform in order to distinguish themselves from the rest but if they are all the same, what makes us characterise these platforms as different? I am assuming the colours play a large role in this. Album covers often get forgotten about now and I have to say, they have some of the most inspiring designs on them! The balance of typography on the Walk the Moon album shows that you can use 3 different fonts on one cover and they don’t all have to be different styles (eg. light, bold and regular). The closeness in terms of the font family’s between the first two fonts is evident but it isn’t so strong that an element of contrast is created. This serves well in terms of the background image as there is strong contrast here and having more contrast created within the typography would have created something that would have clashed too much. Whereas, through the choice of fonts, the cover works incredibly well. This second cover by Mura Masa is not an album I listened to but the use of typography on it is something that I always enjoy and this isn’t actually because of the fonts chosen but due to the playful nature in the way that they have been displayed. By cutting fonts in unsual proportions and splitting them up, or creating a list at the side of the cover (a list of songs normally goes at the back and not the front) as well as playing with the vertical and horizontal planes on other text elements, it encourages the viwer’s eye to explore every pixel on this page. At first I would have perhaps said that this was a very basic cover without much interest however, after looking at each individual element, I have begun to appreciate that this is all working up to a bigger picture and is actually incredibly successful in what it is doing.

Having spent some time looking closely at typefaces, has your appreciation of them increased? If so in any particular aspect? Do you think that understanding more about how typefaces are constructed will be useful to you in future? Make notes in your learning log.

Reflection After looking quite closely at different fonts in the last few exercises and research points, I think it is safe to say that my appreciation for all the small details has increased. It is really interesting to look at all the small details and see the impact that this has on an overall font. It isn’t just about the individual letters but also how it appears as a whole. Being able to notice these differences helps me understand more about the appearance but to take this a step further, this exercise was perfect. For a few of the letters I originally would think that it would be constructed one way but I quickly realised that this wasn’t the case. Being able to view the font so differently again was an important way of realising how true it is that each individual element needs to be carefully considered even to form the most basic fonts. Being able to do this exercise after noticing these finer details within some lettering has definitely helped and I will begin to look more closely at not the difference in appearances but how each letter is formed. For the more simple fonts it is clear to see that this will play another part in why there are differences between different fonts and their letters. It is weird to see me getting excited over the smallest details with fonts now! It was something that I often didn’t experiment with much or just kept playing around until it looked right and now I can start to see a difference in the way I look at these. I know what a font perhaps needs or takes away so I can start looking closely at the fonts to notice exactly what will or won’t work for my design.

Vernacular Typography

I wanted to look at examples of vernacular typography that are around me now, but I also wanted to look at examples that perhaps I didn’t take much notice of before. In one article I read about vernacular photography it mentioned that although grafitti is a form of vandalism and is often hidden within cities, it is a really interesting way to look at the culture and trends around a city. Looking back through photos, there are very few photos of shop fronts or any examples of typography but there are more examples of grafitti. This obviously attracts my eye, in Oxford, where I am from, there is very little graffitti and it isn’t the pleasant kind if there is ever any, it isn’t made to look like an art form. The fact that the art work on the Berlin wall is often replaced also allows the audience to see how the work is developing and the styles changing. However, when artwork is only touched up instead of being changed, it is clear that this style still remains. The MIND THE STEP font is something we are all used to seeing as we commute and there isn’t exactly anything special about it. Instead it is just a bold font used to grasp the audience’s attention and try to steer them away from danger. This works for its purpose. However, I do not think that the coffee shop sign works at all. The imperfect nature of the font contradicts what the sign is trying to say. I understand that everyone will have a different interpretation of what the ‘perfect’ font is but they could at least have it on a straight line! It just looks like a poorly informed choice of font that is based upon boldness instead of anything else. What I have noticed through my observations is that my eye is drawn to, or there are a lot of examples around me that are Serif fonts. For the purposes that each one has, it is understandable that Serif fonts are the easiest to read, and on safety instructions, having a clear and bold font is paramont. The Serif font also makes sense on the IKEA posters, the minimalistic characteristics of Swiss design would not encourage any other use of font, something that is straight to the point, a bit like their furniture. However, I expected a more ornate design from the nail bar sign. It is once againvery straight to the point and here, the sign would have probably benefitted from having some scriptted fonts or something to show more detail, to mirror the detail that nail technicians have to pay when doing more ornate designs. I noticed that my eye is drawn to very similar fonts, and it is not the style of font that I usually use, examples that don’t mirror my own designs. This is perhaps a point for me to notice. I often like to complicate my designs, something that I am still doing, and I think noticing the importance of simplified messages within advertising and verancular examples, like this research point has encouraged me to do, is an important development in the way I look at the visual language that is being employed in order to clearly portray a message.

What different areas have I managed to explore here and develop?

- My understanding has developed for how a font is constructed in terms of singular elements and how individual letters are formed, but I have also seen how the anatomy of a font impacts the way it is viewed as a whole when more and more letters are combined. - Coincidentally, I was able to explore one typeface in more depth through my selection of magazines. Unknowingly picking two magazines that use the same font but adapt them differently shows how much an identity can be adapted through small changes. - Equally, I was able to develop my understanding for how to combine fonts and how different fonts with the same typeface can change the perception of what you are reading as an audience. - Instead of just looking at what I see around me and judging it I like it or not, my eye is becoming more refined and deconstructing why these adverts may work better than others. Often it is the font that effects it and this is something that I used to overlook - I am beginning to be able to trace exactly where my eye is going and why it is going here, working out why the hierarchy works in this way or why fonts compliment each other or don’t work for the purpose.

Have I developed the skills that I set out to at the start?

- I want to be able to analyse fonts a lot closer and understand how the small changes can perhaps give off a different perception to the audience. - I want to be able to experiment more with fonts. Previously, I have only experimented with one typeface instead of the ways in which they are combined and the hierarchy that can be created through the varying fonts. - not yet achieved this through the exercises within this part however, I have been able to take note on ways that I can experiment with fonts, not just throuh typefaces but changing vertical heights that will transform the reading. - The potentials shown through the Didot font is definitely something that has helped with this, but I think this can be pushed further throughout the rest of these exercises. I understand the anatomy of the font now but yet to identify how the different anatomys, the small changes, will effect the audience that it is suitable for.

These pointers all still need some development as these steps taken so far are just small steps in terms of understanding typography as a whole.

Different typefaces

What to I think I will be exploring here?

- How to categorise typefaces - Fonts that may work well together and some that just shouldn’t be paired with each other. - What characterstics make a font fall into a certain category.

What skills do I want to develop?

- I want to be able to develop my understanding of different fonts, how they are structured and what makes them stand out or contrast from another font. - This is more about developing what I started to understand in the previous part.

What do I need to make sure that I focus on during my research?

- The different variations that are available for different typefaces. - The way in which they change appearance if the characteristics are changed in terms of vertical height etc. - Similar fonts, ones that could solve smaller issues. Say I didn’t like the A on one of the fonts, finding similar fonts that solve this issue.

Exercise: If The Face Fits

I wanted my font book to be easy to find for future reference so I made it as a completely different document (I will put access to it on my blog). And instead of separating each category, I wanted to colour code the document as this was a better visualisation method for me. Doing this means I can flick through the whole book and be open to suggestions of other fonts instead of being adament that a San Serif font will work when maybe there is a Serif font that will work better.

A short story in a woman’s magazine entitled “I thought I loved him; now I’m not so sure”. The story is 1300 words long so you will need to identify a text font and a headline font.

What am I aiming to achive with this font? This exercise and project is emphasising the importance of looking at the purpose of a font so I need to continuously ask myself this question. The idea of romance, although it is in question, could be portrayed within this title. If I decided to portray the idea of uncertainty instead, the way in which this wold look would be more glitch like, uneven gaps and wouldn’t provide for an easy read within a magazine. Women’s magazines typically try to use a romantic font. To already give this impression before even reading any words suggests that it will be a good read and everyone loves a bit of romance within a women’s magazine. Heading Fonts:

I thought I loved him; now I’m not so sure - Red Velvet

I thought I loved him; now I’m not so sure - Savoye LET I thought I loved him; now I’m not so sure - Snell Roundbound Which works best?

At the moment I think it is safe to say the two demos don’t work very well. This isn’t just because there are no symbols (because it is a demo version) but also I don’t think that they compliment the story. They are quite difficult to read although I do like the way ‘loved’ is written within the Red Velvet font. Between the other fonts, I’m not quite sure which works best which is why it may be best to work with these 4 alongside the body text. The way in which they appear larger on a page and with other text can influence the way the eye sees this so I think it is best to use this as a next step in order to develop the font. Just as side notes I like the weight of the Nueva Standard Condensed Italic however, I am not sure if this would appear too heavy at a larger size. The Savoye LET is very vertical and although this can be adapted, the I wouldn’t appear as elegant as it does with the Snell Roundbound. I am not sure the entire font of the Snell Roundbound works though. The didot font is a really nice font but I can’t decide whether I like it within this context or whether I like it because I do love the fonts that appear in Vogue magazines.

I was able to come up with a shortlist with these however, I still couldn’t quite work out what would look best and what would look too much within a larger context. This was more in terms of the title fonts than the body text as I was very happy with the Iowan Old Style font. For this reason, I started looking more at other articles.

Ok Magazine in particular has a different layout for each section that they have. It seems like the layout is never changed too much, this makes it easy for a quick flick through the magazine. Very few people read this from cover to cover so making the layouts so easy to dissect helps with this kind of reading. Title wise, the font always remains the same and a second font is used to expand on the title a little more instead of having to read the body text. In this case it works, the titles are often a quote from the article, which this one also is, but I think that maybe using two fonts could work well, to show the contrasting nature of the two parts of the quote.

Something like this, like I found in a Vogue magazine, could work really well. The combination of two fonts works really well here although the fact the two fonts are intertwinned is a little less effective. The choice of words that are presented like this are very simple words but with sentences like the ones that need to be portrayed here, they wouldn’t work.

now I’m not so sure Although I had liked just using one font, I couldn’t help but keep thinking that I was trying to romanticise the second part of the sentence when this really shouldn’t be the case. Therefore, I tried combining the two fonts and as you can see this begins to work a lot better

Extra Details

What did I realise as I was designing? What have I learnt at this point?

As I was designing this and being hypothetical with my fonts, I realised that I had made a point on a previous exercise - it is all well and good creating a smaller version of something but you always need to be reminded of the bigger picture and put everything within the context that it is going to be displayed in. Doing this with this article really helped as it reminded me that a lot of magazines actually do use two fonts for their titles, there is usually a happier font and perhaps one that is a bit harsh to act like it is going to tell the audience some home truths. Equally, presenting the text within columns gives a different impression to showing the text in one large chunk. For this reason, it was important to use Lorem Ipsum to notice the effect this would have on the way in which the body text would appear. Luckily all of the fonts that I had planned did work well together in larger quantities and font size. But to make sure that it really would work as a magazine spread, I also added in areas for extra text or images as the pages looked a little bare without these specifically designed areas and this then influenced the way that the text is read. - Fonts do have their own settings to have italicised lettering. This works better as the font isn’t being forced to fit a style, instead it has been designed to be like this (instead of just using the angle option on Indesign). However, sometimes in order to combine two styles there needs to be a compromise as long as it doesn’t look too forced. - I’ve learnt that it is actually ok to put two fonts together in the same sentence. The grammar helps separate them as too elements and as long as it isn’t all on one line and instantly switches, there can be a nice element of contrast that is created. - Throughout this exercise I want to try different ways of approaching tasks in terms of typography. With this one, it was through creating a list of fonts that could potentionally work based upon what I have pictured in my head. As I started working, this became incredibly overwhelming as I realised there were all these fonts that could work and I felt like I had to try every option. I think this can be clearly evidenced within this learning log as I try to show everything and anything. What I really need to do is pick out a couple of fonts that I could start pairing together and then switch them out as I go whilst I work out that maybe a want a font that is a little more weighted or something.

What do I set out to do with these font choices?

- It needs to be legible but inviting and encouraging to help out (bold, dominating fonts aren’t inviting) - The Artistic Flourish needs to stand out a bit more, it needs to be a visual representation of the wording. Although both the text and the font will be enforcing the same message, for the purpose of a leaflet this is important (as I found in assignment 2, it isn’t always beneficial but here it will be needed).

TO OUR CHURCH? This time, where I am just trying to focus on one part of the typography, I am struggling because I can’t picture the other elements with it. The second two fonts are working better but the emphasis on the ‘artistic flourish’ aren’t quite right, it stands out for the wrong reasons and I don’t like them being on separate lines.

What did I try between these designs? I needed something that was bold but not too dominate as everything else was quite light. Gobold had the height I wanted but it was too heavy so I went with their Hollow Bold instead as this didn’t have as much weight to it.

What have I learnt at this point?

- Although for a mock up you don’t always need to create the final product, here the image was really important as part of the flyer and I felt like this helped to develop the typography more. - Outline fonts can be a really good way to break down information so that it doesn’t seem so intense, even just having 4 regular fonts can sometimes be too much for the eye. - In my opinon this still doesn’t quite work however, I can’t work out why. Maybe it will help to continue with the exercises throughout this part and revisit it at a later date to work out what it is that doesn’t work. Is it that there are 4 different fonts here? The colours? The lack of visual hierarchy?

What was the title of this section? Different Typefaces Am I fulfiling the aims that I identified?

Reminder - I said I need to focus on developing my understanding of different fonts, how they can be adapted, how the categories effect the way in which they are paired and what actual categories there are for fonts. I have definitely experimented with fonts at this point, working out which not only fulfil the purpose but going on to investigate what looks good together. Through this, I have begun to notice the difference that it makes adding in columns but not only this feature, but also how wide these columns are then made. Equally, the size comparisons of the font can sometimes make the font appear heavier than the original viewing so this all changes the way a typeface is used and interacted with. This explores typefaces more than I thought I would be doing in this part however, it is interesting to see how the context can change all of this. Like I found with the Vogue magazine, the font can appear so different through a few small changes and the context. For this reason, it was important to make sure that the fonts were placed within a mirrored context during the design process.

What do I still need to work on throughout this exercise?

For some combinations, I’m still not quite sure why they may work or may not and I think I need to investigate this more. I have an understanding of the anatomy of the typeface and the way in which it can be presented in multiple ways, but I still can’t pinpoint why some things do and don’t work. This is about developing my visual language skills.

Not keen on the first font and the combination of 4 fonts hasn’t worked previously? May be worth trying but not every sentence needs s different style. The balance between heavy and light fonts is ok however, there is no in between font, nothing to ground the texts as regular.

4 )ALL FREE JUST COME ALONG It now seems to have gone in the other direction, there are a lot of fontas that are just waiting in the middle instead of creating any kind of impact. With a poster that doesn’t create any impact, it isn’t going to sit well with this kind of audience.

4There)ALL FREE JUST COME ALONG is a better balance here between each element and no font is too similar although this works in some ways, it may

be interesting to have some fonts that are quite similar as there is still some interest there but the amount of contrast is then reduced. As this goes back to the issue that I first mentioned about possibly having too many fonts on one page.

4I think)ALL FREE JUST COME ALONG this is getting closer to what it needs to be. The fonts are paired on 1 &3 and 2&4 in terms of being bold fonts

and slightly lighter fonts however, they still are very clearly their own font without much similarity. This helps to being the overall poster together however, I now need to see how this appears on a poster of the correct size in terms of dynamics between each element.

Reminder - I said I need to focus on developing my understanding of different fonts, how they can be adapted, how the categories effect the way in which they are paired and what actual categories there are for fonts. One thing I wanted to try and do throughout this is try different methods for building up different font combinations. So far, I have found this method the most helpful so instead of creating individual lists of suitable fonts, I pick 4 and keep switching them around until they work. This is helping me understand the effects that each font has on being paired with different fonts in a more successful way than previously tried.

What did I realise as I was designing? What did I learn?

- As I have realised here, 4 fonts is definitely too much so maybe this is something that I need to look at in the previous design as this could solve some of the issues. - Unintentionally here, the fonts get lighter in terms of weight as you go down the poster. I think this has actually worked out really well as it means that your eye naturally works its way down the frame and this is the order that the information needs to be read in. Although the visual hierarchy could easily be altered in terms of what images are added, it is important that the text also plays on this. - The text doesn’t have a very interesting layout which to me, would be considered slightly boring however, for the target audience I think it works perfectly. It is functional, has all the necessary information and there isn’t much to distract the eye - it is to the point. - With typography I did think it would be hard to have a target audience for each font however, I am learning that it isn’t the font itself, it is how it is used on the page, how it is paired with other elements and the visual hierarchy that is created as a result. From this point, you will be able to identify if the font fits with the target audience, and your vision for the poster.

What is the intention with this font?

- It needs to look like a party kind of font, it needs to be fun, exciting and have the association with a good night out. - There are normally lots of fonts being combined (there are so many on some of these leaflets) so it is important to create a visual hierarchy that balances these out. - Strong enticing font for the header, perhaps a curved font will work well for part of it. One single font could also be used just in different sizes or one with multiple font options (it looks like the Kasbah one uses a font similar to GoBold and it’s various

I started trying to make a list of fonts that I thought would work, a technique that I had used earlier, however, because of the style of fonts, and I knew that I would need to be able to see the balance between each element, that this wasn’t going to work. With this design, I need to go straight into the design process digitally instead of planning. Although planning and visualising ideas on paper works for many projects, this one is a bit more complex to balance. PLEASE NOTE: to fit more on a page I have made them slightly smaller however, the final showcase of the design is the correct size.

What have I learnt at this point?

- What was interesting with this final design is that I needed to include as many fonts as possible really. The style of invite that was specified within the brief wanted this club style flyer and in all the ones I have seen, there are multiple fonts that have all been balanced in order to create a visual hierarchy. - Perhaps it was made a little more difficult here as this had more information on it that a typical club flyer would have, however, the balance is still there, even if there isn’t as much size difference between the texts as I would perhaps like. - It is important to get the tones right and as the font changes, as will the way the colour works. Sometimes a colour can seem really bold but when placed on to a new font, this impression will change. This is where it is important to draw on the practices of another part of the module, looking at tints and shades. Changing them ever so slightly so that the balance is still there is important as neither element should be compromised. - Giving height to fonts is important. Changing the smaller details of a font doesn’t mean that you are changing the font, but giving it a little extra height is sometimes important to make it have the effect that you want. Ideally, over the rest of this module, and particularly part of the module, I will build up a collection of fonts that is naturally a little higher on some letters as stretching them with the generic settings on Indesign, doesn’t always produce the results that it should. - I still need to learn and experiment with balancing multiple fonts because, as the last couple of exercises have proven, I am not quite sure that I have achieved it just yet.

Compared to the others within this exercise, this one brief has helped me explore the title of DIFFERENT TYPEFACES more as I have been balancing 4 fonts alongside each other. Although some of the others did have a few selections, each sentence here has a completely different font, none of them are similar in any way. With the other designs, they worked best if two of the fonts were very similar or there was one text used for a larger block of text. However, with club posters, there aren’t blocks of text and each piece of information is often given a completely different typeface, they don’t have connections between the two. As I was encouraged to experiment with more and more fonts on this poster, it was able to test my ability to combine them and then also push the boundaries of the title to see how many different typefaces I could combine.

What makes text easier to read or harder to read? Is it easy to read? Yes. Why? High contrast. Columns. Strong text. Indented paragpaphs. Text size helps create a hierarchy to know what to read. The text isn’t a large block, it doesn’t look like it is going to take long to read.

Is it easy to read? Yes. Why? Clear divide into sections. The larger capitalised letter indicates where the eye should start. Text is broken up through highlighted fonts. Less contrast here in terms of tones, so less interesting, but doesn’t mean that the readability is decreased. Indented paragraphs. By splitting it up into segments instead of wrapping the text around closer, the text doesn’t seem so dominating.

Easy to read? Yes. But too much information? Yes. There is a lot for the eye to take in here. As applied by the other magazine, there are clear columns and indents for each paragraph but also the titles aren’t as prominent or exciting. So although it is easy to read. Would I read it? Out of interest, no, but if it were a technique that I really needed to learn, then yes I would.

Is it readable? Yes. All of these magazines seem to have a very similar structure, and even after just looking at these few examples, I am a little bored of consistently seeing the same thing. I want to find examples that are challenging these typical structures a bit more, making the content seem more interesting. However, I guess that the purpose influences this a lot. As a gossip magazine, OK! is going to have a lot of text whereas, something like Vogue won’t in the same way.

Focus point -

How is text constructed on a page to not only make it interesting but readable? What characteristics make it harder or easier to read? How do images balance with this? What is the text allignment?

Does this look like it will be easy to read? Yes. Was it easy to read? There was a lot of text which was easy to read, due to the font, but it was put into large sections that filled the width of each fold. The division of text into columns in the magazines works well however, with leaflets like this, the width is too narrow for columns but too large to have large blocks of text. The square around the text does suggest though that it will be clearly divided between text and images which it was.

Easy to read and interesting layout. Combination of two simple Serif and a San Serif font make for an easy read, nothing too complicated. Clear division into columns, two columns on the right are slightly wider. The image going into the text should be make it harder to read but the splash of colour adds interest and isn’t high contrast to make it harder or too dominant.

Is this readable? The body text, yes. The heading on the image, not so much. Why is it harder to read? The white text isn’t strong enough against the texture of the jumper. A bolder font is required, something that is harsher, not quite like the ‘Stencil Standard’ font, but maybe ‘Copperplate’ would have had a nice contrast in terms of also being capitals in order to separate the elements. The italicised font isn’t as bad on the second line. But because the photo is so close up, some of the italicised font is also obscured by the texture on the jumper and as this is an even lighter font, it makes it that little bit harder to read. Although one of the images leaks slightly over on to the body text, is is a simple line which doesn’t obscure the readability in the same way.

This is a really intriguing example of where a font has been used twice within the same magazine, one time it is really clear to read, the other time, it isn’t so clear. ‘Work Smarter’ is a phrase that I found very easy to read, however, I was only able to understand that the other page said ‘Gear Winter’ once I had seen the way this font is presented for a second time.

This suggests that it perhaps isn’t the typeface that is effecting the readability, maybe a couple of letters, but it is more the way in which the text has been combined with a second typeface. Equally, the phrase ‘Work Smarter’ is more common and flows better than ‘Gear Winter’. Although the element of contrast between the two colours used for ‘Gear Winter’ does help slightly, it would be benefical to see the entire typeface as this is quite a complex one to trace with your eyes. The image does also effect the reading. As it is new technology, it isn’t an image that particularly helps us to decifer what i says. Although the image of the woman also doesn’t clearly link the text here isn’t obscured by any other text and can be read in full format.

Many of the layouts within this look book worked, I loved the way in which the typography was highlighted alongside images. The use of capitals, not just as isolated elements but also as something to overlap the image, works really well. The scale difference creates an image. Equally, playing with the orientation of the text and the way in which this lines up with each other works well on some pages, or overlapping the text with the images was also a way to create impact. However, there was one page I felt didn’t work so well and that is the example above. The readability of this text is difficult due to the size of the text and the colour. The text needed to have a heavier weight to it, ot it could have been rotated 90 degrees anti clockwise and put on the white section of the page on the left. This is typically only done with titles or extra details so putting some more important information here would change the typical layouts that the rest of the lookbook is challenging. However, with this page I do like the misallignment of each section as it doesn’t fit into a perfect column space like the other blocks of text do on the opposite page.

Yes this is readable, but it isn’t a comfortable read. What do I mean by this? The font doesn’t really suit the orientation that is has been put at. The gaps although beneficial and work when landscape, the abruptness of this doesn’t quite work with the ornate image. I understand that this is the font that features throughout all of the ELLE publications, however, there are other ways this could have been worked. This wouldn’t have had to compromise the size of the text, but it could have been placed over the image, perhaps the dark section in the top right of the image. This would have meant that the image would have become left alligned but the text could have been half black and have white so that it was visible over each section. Looking through the rest of the lookbook, this isn’t a style that they have particularly used elsewhere. However, I think it is needed because out of all the layouts, this is the most expected I found. The layouts within this book are always so interesting, the balance between images and text is perfectly achieved, but this one layout is something I expected to see which makes it just a little boring. I know this isn’t the focus of the assignment, but I wanted to also look at the bigger picture in terms of how photography and text work together.

Is this readable? Yes. What makes it work? For once it isn’t down to columns in this lookbook! There are still indented paragraphs however, the indents are small. The fact the allignment has also not been set to fully justified means that there is some of the white space left for the eye to take a pause. Although the white block has been used to make the font visible against the intense background, the eye still needs some break from this text. If it were fully justified the white wouldn’t have the same benefit. Although it would separate the two elements, the text would now also seem very intense so these small sections act as a nice pause.

What did I love about the style of these two articles so much?

Part of the reason I wanted to highlight these articles is because I love the way they have been presented but as part of this I also need to look at why the typography helped the design. I have never seen designs like this feature in a magazine as they all usually follow the same layouts that I showed early on. However, these are not scared to be bold, the use of an electric yellow rectangle, that doesn’t actually change positions is used playfully so that you think it keeps shifting when really, it is the images and text that change the perception. Although some of the text does bleed outside of these lines, it is still readable between the two segments. This may take a little bit of adjusting to however, to help with this, the information is split into columns to make for an easier read. In particular, I really like the yellow that featured down the middle of the pages in the first article. To begin with, I though that these were cutting off words but once I looked closer, I realised that it had this effect due to the fully justified allignment. I have never seen it used so carefully crafted and it encourages the eye to read every piece of information that is on the page. And although these pages do have a lot of information, the way it is presented doesn’t make it seem this way. It is exciting and playful so you want to absorb every bit of information that you can from it.

Is this readable? In part yes. The title font works in a way however, I think there needs to be a bit more contrast than just the colour. I looked at an example previously that worked because there was a large size difference alongisde one was a capitalised version, and the other was lowercase. The italicised part of this works really well but I am a little unsure of the title. Although you can work out what it says, the legibility of individual letters (especially the N) isn’t very easy.

Is this readable? Yes. This is some really strong typography combinations here in my opinion. The fact that both the heading and sub-sentence are italicised is something that I rarely consider however, by varying the weights and overlapping the text with the photograph, the combination works really well. The use of columns and indented text works well again on the body text.

Text often highlights the starting letter, making it larger and in a more elaborate font however, I have never seen it done in this way before. It is strong, demands attention, and the rest of the text works its way around the lettering offering it some blank space so that the quantity of text no longer appears too dominant.

The use of a white text box here doesn’t have the impact that it had within the lookbook however, the bold colours make the large chunks of text appear a little more interesting.

Summary of what makes something easy to read:

- Columns to break down large blocks of text. - Indenting paragraphs on columns - distinguishes paragraphs but doesn’t break the linearity of the column too much, better than having lots of small rectangles across the page by using a full line break. - High contrast between foreground and background. - Strong, demanding, clear text. - Hierarchy being established between text and elements. - Clear dividers between sections. All of these are very stereotypical ways of making it easier to read. Although these are often the most successful, I wanted to look at some more interesting articles to see how they make it more attractive but still keep this element of readability. It is safe to say some use the same techniques but some are more successful than others.

What makes it harder to read?

- Varying Column lengths - Text overlapping the image ( I understand that the colour helps to add a splash of colour and it is an interesting overlap but it contrasts the clean cut nature of the rest of the article). - Lack of contrast between text and image (on the right the text is really hard to read for the title). - Intricate and unclear fonts - Obscuring text by putting more text on top.

Other ways that it is easy to read:

- Most use Sans Serif fonts for the body text as this is easier to read for many. - Boxing in fonts - creating divisions between sections. - Carefully positioning text in proportion to images. - Placing text on ‘quieter’ parts of an image (like the image directly above this). - Or blocking out the image by using a white block so the text doesn’t get interrupted by the background and becomes easier to read. These methods all seem to use one column and indent the paragraphs, this is a very typical approach and would normally seem quite boring but each of these layouts makes it seem more and more interesting despite using the same methods on how to make text (the main bulk) more readable.

Exercise Lorem Ipsum

Focus point -

deconstruct the magazine down to the core elements, what makes it easy to read? What perhaps dictates the purpose that this article has? What are the borders like for printing? Why do the fonts balance well? What kind of hierarchy is established? But most importantly in relation to typesetting - how is the text laid out? What is the allignment like? How is it arranged on the page? How is it arranged in the columns?

This was me trying to work out the dotted font, but the identifying program struggled in trying to identify what it was. These were the top suggestions which obviously don’t work.

A simple search for ‘dotted’ seemed to produce more accurate results, the top results were not the most accurate however, I think Le Havre Layers Dotted is the closest match but maybe not the N.

The font indentifying website was actually really helpful on this scenario as it came up with the correct suggestion and this was it’s only one. I knew the font was available in bold form one of the pages so the brutal type fits as the body text for this article.

I originally measured the different columns out however, the final measurement didn’t work in terms of having 2cms between the edge of the text and the page (as indicated by the small rectangle) I realised that due to the binding of the magazine, it would be hard to tell what size the paper actually is and therefore, I decided to work backwards as I knew the edge measurement and the text measurements were correct but the yellow segment wasn’t so, as can be seen on the next page, I made some alterations to make sure that this was correct.

1 inch = 6 picas = 72 points = 25.4 millimeters This measurement came in useful when trying to work out the different sizes of the fonts although the gaps between the lettering here doesn’t look like it is the 1.5 spacing as suggested so I may have to change the leading of the text. SHINE A LIGHT is 3cm high = 30 mm (30/25.4) x 72 = point size = 85pt

I was quickly able to identify that the main font was Didot, from my research in a previous exercise, and this was used even for the lowercase of ‘The Hollywood portfolio’. However, I was unsure on the main body text. There were multiple options here but I concluded that Adobe Casion Bold was the font that Vogue use.

Bringing this back to the focal point of the exercise: Focus point -

deconstruct the magazine down to the core elements, what makes it easy to read? What perhaps dictates the purpose that this article has? What are the borders like for printing? Why do the fonts balance well? What kind of hierarchy is established? But most importantly in relation to typesetting - how is the text laid out? What is the allignment like? How is it arranged on the page? How is it arranged in the columns? In many of the examples I have found, magazine articles are split into columns and the text is set at full width without hyphenation. This leaves very clean lines on the page. If the text were to be constantly jolted, then the smooth lines wouldn’t be created and it would create a very uneasy reading across the page. By setting it out like this, the audience is able to create a continuous flow over the text instead of trying to focus on the constantly shifting forms of the lines. In order to create some breaks for the eye, the paragraphs are indented. This highlights that it is a new paragraph, but once again the formation of the columns isn’t completely broken down because there are not entirely empty lines featuring across the page. Two comments that I would really like to highlight: - On the previous article, the text goes right up to the yellow boxes. At first I was slightly confused by this and I was surprised when the text easily flowed from one line to the next in terms of the text actually made sense. However, I do think this gives the impression of a slightly cramped page. The indents of paragraphs are small and subtle which makes the text appear like an even larger section to read. Then, especially the large white border on the left hand side of the spread seems a little out of proportion. Admittedly this isn’t a design I would have considered doing, because it does seem very cramped, however, with a few small adjustments it could work for multiple different purposes. For example, this could be completely changed to be used for an academic journal. In order to do this though, I think I need to develop my understanding for the grid structure and how this is employed across pages. - Not all columns need to be full width alligned. The text at the side of Nicole Kidman’s article doesn’t fit this common theme. However, it works. Why does it work? It works because the blank space is left at the side of the page so it eases your eye in and out of the blank space before going into the blocks of text. It is also a subtle way of mirroring the flow of Kidman’s dress on the other page as all other fonts are very strong, alert and harsh on the edges, they may be Sans Serif in nature but they are still quite harsh fonts.

Changing the leading and increasing the size makes the layout work more successfully. It’s interesting to look at these changes as I would have perhaps looked at the old version and just said it didn’t work instead of making these small changes so that it did.

What have I learnt at this point?

- I always thought magazine layouts were very similar however, this is because I kept reading the same kind of magazines. Now that I have expanded this slightly, and through this exercise, I have been able to deconstruct what makes an effective magazine layout and what can make it a bit more interesting. - These two magazine layouts were selected because they are made up of components that I wouldn’t usually piece together and being able to construct them in this manner made me realise why they did work. It made me start looking at basic layouts differently and trying to think of a way to make it more visually stimulating whilst keeping the same information. - Magazines like to use typefaces that have multiple options, so using one family for both the heading and sub-heading and then something different for the body text. - A font may not look right but play with the different options of kerning and leading as this can transform the way a font appears on a page. There are so many different ways to change the appearance of a generic font and this is one way, alongside looking at what typeface it gets paired with. - Text plays a much bigger role than I often gave it credit for! Sometimes I just read it but now I am starting to not only read the text but read the font and what effect it has on the page, how I read the individual words etc. This change will help me develop my designs further.

Exercise Hierarchy

The visual hierarchy here seems a little confused. Although the sections help divide the page, my eye isn’t immediately drawn to the main title, the contrast of the yellow attracts me to these titles and I find myself ignoring one of the sections as well as the reading what the overall concept of this page is.

Headings seem to use a San Serif font, it is quite simple and they add emphasis in other ways - the example above uses a colour clock. I don’t want to start using colour as part of this exercise as the emphasis is currently on the type, so I need to look at ways of working with this more directly.

Focus point - How does text create hierarchy? Identify whether a font looks taller than it should naturally or whether other characteristics have changed. Identify other elements that create hierarchy and how this HELPS the font, remember the focus is the font here.

I went back to the other examples and realised that I had missed the important part of using a San Serif font and very quickly the appearance of this was transformed.

The focus here is Typography and Hierarchy. No hierarchy has yet been created with just one font so this needs to change. Full text choices need to be experimented with in order to learn about hierarchy.

Firstly, it was really interesting to see how the smallest change within these layouts could effect they way it was viewed so much. Some combintations worked really well, whilst others needed continuously changing.

Why does each combination work?

Combination 1 -Engebrechtre, Althea and Adobe Casion Pro The Engebrechtre font is bold in nature with more emphasised capitals. It grabs the attention of the audience and the San Serif font choice compliments the Althea font. This is because the contrast between weights creates a hierarchy that the eye follows in terms of what to read first. Althea has a slight script nature to it as a Serif font. Italicised lettering didn’t work well with Engebrechtre however, it needed the soft curves in order to often the harsher lines. Casion Pro doesn’t have the same kind of height as the other two fonts, which suits its purpose as a body text. If all fonts were elongated, then the eye would have been strectehd too far over the page so this font works well for grounding the other donts. Combination 2 - Bodoni 72 Oldstyle Bold, Bodoni 72 Oldstyle Book Italic and Baskerville. Although the San Serif font worked well as a title font, I did want to try a Serif font. This one has the bold nature that was required and the tails on the letters are thin so the Serif nature isn’t too dominant, the bold typeface is the primary focus. As I noticed in the Vogue magazine, and as then highlighted by my information pack, it is common to use similar fonts, well the same font family for headings and sub-headings but changing the styles. Here this worked, using the lighter italic option contrasted yet compliments the main font. This creates a strong hierarchhy and if the fonts were the other way around, the bold font would be too much and a lighter font wouldn’t grab the attention of the audience in the same way. Baskerville has the curved lettering that is shared by the other fonts meaning there isn’t a large quantity of harsh lines to contrast the other fonts. However, the capital letters do have some autorit and add interest to the body text as well instead of being plain and boring to read. Combination 3 - Bodoni 72 Oldstyle Bold with 72% slant, Bodoni 72 SmallCaps Book and Adobe Casion Pro. Although combination 2 does work, I thought there wasn’t something quite right about it so I used the same font family for the heading and sub-heading before coming up with an alternative combination. This one is a little more interesting and there are harsher lines features by using the Small Caps font. However, by changing the body text font back to Adobe Casion Pro, there are some softer lines compared to Baskerville which helps to both emphasise and soften the other two font choices. Maybe the best combination out of all of them would be to have combination 2 but with the Adobe Casion Pro font.

I went into some shops to have a look at specialist computer magazines however, I couldn’t take photos of the articles. However, I was able to make the following notes on the topic:

- Mixture of serif and sans serif for titles - Black and white with an accent colour - each section has a different colour - Clear divides between each section - Generally quite heavily weighted fonts - Formulaic structure - Same font families between headings - 2-3 columns on a page They had a very similar appearance to some of the camera magazines that I have previously bought therefore, I am able to start experimenting with this concept a little more. I know the way I like to make things look, however, I need to start considering the purpose more as the target audience of these magazines won’t appreciate the approach that I would possibly take.

Why does each combination work?

Combination 1 - Azonix 32pt, The Bellovia Sans 18pt, Apple Symbols 12pt It is common in computer magazines to use a very strong Sans Serif font. I don’t want to make the stereotype but the audience don’t want to see all the frills of a script font or maybe even some Serif fonts. Therefore, it is important to find a slightly more interesting Sans Serif font to use that will create some different layers to each font. I had wanted to avoid using two capitalised fonts next to each other, however, the heights and weights of Azonix and the Bellovia Sans work really well together. The strong but slightly squashed nature of the heading font is complimented by the then light and elongated nature of the Bellovia Sans. Alongside this, Apple Symbols seemed like a good middle choice of font. Looking at it now, the font is ever so slightly heavier than that of the Bellovia Sans and in some cases it wouldn’t work, however, here is still works as the middle font establishes itself as a sub-heading in others ways which doesn’t ruin the visual hierarchy that is created in order to show the reader what order the text needs to be read in. Combination 2 - Baron Neue 40pt, Baron Neue Italic 17pt, Apple Symbols 12pt This combination starts to focus on using the same font family throughout an article as this was something that the information pack said was often a good thing to focus on within an article as it allows for each element to flow. Overall the heading font works really well but there are a couple of letters, especially the I that I would have liked to change. This is more of a personal choice though as otherwise the font fits really well with the purpose. Using the same font family for the sub-headings, just changing it so that the font is italicised, works well for consistency but there is no longer the contrast in terms of weight, and both fonts are again capitalised. Although this goes against everything that I said worked for combination 1, where the contrasts in height and weight make it a successful combination, the body text of Apple Symbols now sits more clearly within the visual hierarchy as the weight is clearly the least heavy out of them all, something that would typically be characterised for a body text. This is what makes it work well, there is the flow between each typeface, it doesn’t have to use 3 different fonts which can get confusing for the eye, and a visual hierarchy has been established through this. Combination 3 - Built Titling SemiBold 47pt, Built Titling Italic 20pt, Apple Symbols 12pt Although I knew the previous combination worked, I wanted to find something that would give more contrast in terms of the weight of the heading and sub-heading. The Built Titling font gave me this opportunity as the font is still clearly the same however, it isn’t so closely linked on this occasion. Once againg the Apple Symbols font softens the weight and height of this combination which ground the work within a better scenario. These typefaces work to my advantage in terms of what I have seen in other computer magazines as they are bold, to the point, and don’t have to many serifs and tails that would just not suit the technology style.

How do reviews appear in magazines? The title and details of the author and location are one font and then the body text is another font. Use this and possibly have it in italics instead of in quoted marks.

My original thought was to use a font that linked to the book itself for the review, however, after looking in OK! Magazine, I realised that this was incredibly specific and trying to create an identity across the review section within a magazine wouldn’t be done by using multiple different fonts. For this reason, I need to make selections of fonts that could be used on multiple covers instead of just the one.

Through this exercise, I have started to realise the positive efffects that it has to use the same font family (for headings and sub-headings) on the viewing experience.

Why does each combination work?

Combination 1 - Nueva Standard Bold Condensed 47pt, Nueva Standard Condensed Italic 30pt, Optima regular 12pt. The Serif nature of Nueva Standard establishes itself in a position of authority over the body text. This isn’t to say that a Serif font has authority over a Sans Serif, there are a lot of other factors that influence this appearance. This is mainly due to the bold font, combined with italics, and the size comparison. My initial thought with a book review was to use the font that is used on the book however, in a weekend magazine, you want each section of the magazine to have a style that not only links to the rest of that issue but other issues so changing the font each week will not establish this. The lightness in terms of weight o the sub-heading font works really well as an intermedium between the 2 fonts. 1 and 2 share the same font and then 2 and 3 share a similar weight. This is what makes the combination work so well as the fonts all link, don’t have obvious juxtapositions and create a strong visual hierarchy through the slight differences that do appear. Combination 2 - Bodoni 72 Bold 40pt, Bodoni 72 Book 30pt and Palatino regular 12pt This combination is a little similar to the first option. However, the small differences do create a slightly different impression. Firstly, the main header font doesn’t have such height whereas, the sub-heading font does have this height. Having the Bodoni 72 book font as a regular style (not bold/italics/only capitals) does mean that this height issues a strong authority. In some ways this contradicts the main font however, personally I think it works well. The weight establishes a visual hierarchy that highlights that the text should be read first. The height of the sub-heading font establishes it second in the visual hierarchy but it also emphasises that it is an important piece of information to read, after all you do need to know the author’s name. If the 2 fonts weree too close, then the information wouldn’t be able to differentiate itself. The final font is a perfect combination of the two. It sits in between the two varying heights which is where it was important to establish this visual hierarchy so that the body text wasn’t read second (after the sub-heading). Interestingly, all 3 fonts are a Serif. I will be the first to admit that this wasn’t a conscius choice. However, it does keep the flow going scross all 3 fonts which is why this combination is successful. Combination 3 - Gobold thin light 47pt, Gobolg thin light italic 30pt and Chaparral Pro 12pt With the Gobold font, it is really important to get the size comparisons right. Although this is important for every font, the Gobold font gets bolder as the font gets bigger so doing this was something that I really needed to consider with this process. The height helps to assert the authority a title needs without using a traditional bold typeface. And then using a regular typeface without the same kind of height helps to ground this combination, which is why it works. The San Serif nature of Gobold also makes it work better. Although a Serif combination works on the others, there is something about the Gobold font that works for this purpose. Maybe it is because I have seen OK! magazine use a more intriguing San Serif font so Gobold also seemed to fit this theme. Although I think their font is too squashed compared to the body text which is why I subconsciously, I picked one with more height.

Assignment What to I think I will be exploring here?

- I will be bringing together everything that I have learnt about typography with this exercise so I need to explore the anatomy of a typeface and the benefits some choices would have over others, exploring different typefaces in combination with each other, the typesetting that I give my text and the hierarchy that is established between each one.

What skills do I want to develop?

- I want to be able to focus more on designing things from scratch, no layouts to copy or to establish what fonts are used but establish the identity that I want to create for this magazine. - Logo design will be a key thing, it is something that I often struggle with so this could be interesting. - Creating thumbnails and hand drawings is something that I avoid doing but with this I think it will really help. - Layout skills. Trying to keep things simple and making sure it is readable as I always overcomplicate things and I don’t want this to happen here!

What do I need to make sure that I focus on during my research?

- Other magazines and how the covers are designed, how hierarchy is created on these, the text combinations they use and what is the basic information required. - Layout designs. How do different magazines design the inside of their magazines depending on the purpose? - Remember to focus on the purpose and target audience so that everything can be targetted towards them.

What is a type foundary?

Before digital distribution of materials became posible, a type foundary was the place that people would go to buy the parts for their letterpress printing, specifically the typefaces and individual lettering. Now these companies still exist but they generally distribute fonts digitally. The fonts are designed by specific font designers either within the foundary or as a freelancer.

What is a specimen sheet?

A specimen sheet would have the font printed out on to the sheet so that designers could see how it would appear when printed and how each element was constructed. It would show the font at different sizes and with different options in terms of bold and italic. This would be something that a deisgner would receive if they were thinking of purchasing the font. Now this is all done digitally and sometimes you can even download a demo to see how a preview version would look as part of your design.

Milieu Grotesque

Milieu Grotesque displayed their fonts in a very different way to any other type foundaries. When you hover over a font in this list, it shows you all the options that are available and once you click on the font, you are able to see all the fonts close together. This works well as a display method however, as you will see as you go through the next few pages, this is one of the few foundaries that do not offer the ability to change the size and spacing of the fonts. This opportunity to customise the font to see if it would fit your project is an important feature when trying to select a font and instead Milieu Grotesque don’t offer this potentional, or even the ability to see every letter of the alphabet in each font.

The layouts of this website are generally just more interesting than any other I could find.

camelot

This ability to investigate a font more helps someone make the decision about a font. The use of specimen sheets has now decreased and therefore, the websites need to offer the same information. Although a specimen sheet couldn’t be customised or experimented with in this way, this shows the benefits that computer developments have had on typography whereas the other one is even more limiting than a specimen sheet.

I understand that you need to show work to highlight how a font can be used, and displaying it in this manner suggests that the font can still be used on your project. However, again the layout it quite boring and you don’t have the focus of the font whereas, showing the details of each font next to a project with Milieu Grotesque, at least the focus is constantly brought back to the typography.

Grilli Type

The initial interest with these fonts is there in terms of the home page, but one each font is expanded, there is too much going on to be able to visualise how one individual font will look within your own project. Although I do like the idea of type foundaries and their concept, I am unsure whether these websites showcase the font to its full potentional. Obviously you want to show that the font can be applied to any project, but this doesn’t look interesting or appealing. Some designers may like this but I want to be encouraged to be playful with their designs and this doesn’t do that.

General Magazine Covers

What’s in common between these magazines?

-Bold, captivating title. The title doesn’t have to be fully in view though. Sometimes an image will obscure it slightly. What works for these is that they are well known magazines so the style is easy to identify and the title therefore doesn’t always need to be viewed in full but I need to make sure that mine can be. - There isn’t a minimum or maximum amount of surrounding text that should be used. The Billboard magazine uses minimal text whereas Men’s Health uses a lot more. The balance that therefore has to be created between each element is judged differently. - The pairing of the typography is interesting, because previously the information pack said that going above three fonts can get complicated, which I do agree with. However, many of these actually use a lot more. The magazine doesn’t need to be simplified too much however, for a typography based one, it is perhaps best to keep it minimal as there isn’t the same amount of content to put on the cover like the Men’s Health magazine.

typography Magazine Covers and based projects

Pointers that I can take forward:

- Keep it simple. - Only have a few elements and build a strong visual hierarchy between each element. - Engaging colours that elevate the type. - Show the potentional of typography, some people won’t realise how much there is to experiment with it, so won’t buy the magazine and you are trying to encourage them to pick it up. - Have clear positions of where the text should and shouldn’t be placed. - Most of the covers actually have very few elements so keep it this way. Keep it simple, with an interesting layout that showcases information.

Not as sleek or strong as the other design.

How do people write about texts? The Designers: A new revolution of type inspired by the fashion in the City of Light like the city it’s named after, is elegant, vibrant, and full of life. Influenced by the Parisian fashion runways, its sleek and stylish design offers styles in different weights: Regular and Bold with 4 styles per weight. In addition to upper and lowercase letters, this luxurious family boasts stunning numerals and symbols that rely on a strong mix of complementary high contrast line strokes. This gives the perfect balance to each form. This typeface is ideal for headlines in fashion publications or luxury brands. Paris Typeface utilizes the traditional Latin letterforms and refashions them with innovative shapes that create a typeface as classic as the city it honors. Moshik Nadav about his Paris Typeface https://moshik.net/pages/paris-typeface-moshik-nadav-fashion-magazines-fonts-typography

After reading this, I’ve realised that perhaps this isn’t what I am supposed to be writing about, instead what makes a font interesting. Therefore, lets start looking at research for this instead.

Research what makes a font interesting? Whether we notice them or not, there are numerous fonts around us. Some look more similar than others, some have a universal connection. But what actually makes this font interesting? The look of a font is one thing, the scientific reasoning behind a font is another and it is this combination that makes a font interesting. How do you view the Sans Serif font used for the LinkedIn logo? Why Sans Serif? The sharp edges are considered professional as it is clean and business like, especially highlighting the characteristics of LinkedIn to connect with other professionals. The Disney font is something completely different. It is a script font that can be universally understood, we know it is the Disney logo and immediately we all connect it to our favourite Disney movie and potentially our childhood. However, if you dissect each element, especially the D (that looks like a G) or the y (which looks like a p), it is actually quite a difficult typeface to read. However, when you look at how we often read words, it becomes clear why this logo actually works. Normally, the way in which your eye naturally reads text is dependent on the pace at which you read, the information that your brain will actually take in is based upon when you pause in a text. Unknowingly your eye will pause slightly after every 7-9 letters and perhaps the most intriguing point is that LinkedIn is 8 letters long. This situates itself perfectly within this limit. Facebook is also 8 letters long. Google is only 6 but does this make a difference that it is presented as a Serif font? And Instagram is also in a Serif font, this is 9 letters long. Disney is also 6 letters long. This means that your eye could pass over the word without really processing it and I think this is exactly what happens when the logo is seen. Because the font is actually quite difficult to read, it is less about reading each letter individually to get the meaning but the movement is traced and universally understood to link to the nostalgic Disney movies. There seems to be no set way in which marketing uses fonts in connection to Serif or Sans Serif fonts, or their letter length. It is purely driven by the identity that the company want to portray, and how each font constructs its lettering.

So how is a font actually constructed? Each font is made up of several elements. Some will take the more traditional approach to lettering whereby, there will be similar strokes, serifs and bowls that appear on multiple letters (a stereotypical Serif font). Whereas, some others will take a more abstract approach, script lettering is slightly different between each one and some typefaces even just use shapes in order to mimik the forms seen in Serif and Sans Serif fonts. Each one is constructed slightly differently, even if they are in the same category, or look very similar. So how exactly is a typeface constructed? Roman lettering used to use squares in order to form each shape. This doesn’t mean a square was used within each one but each letter had to fit into the same size square (for capitalised letters) so that there was some consistency when it came to hand writing. Metal blocks from the Gutenberg press always had this regular construction and it was something that the Roman’s also wanted to sue as it allowed for an easier read. It wasn’t even as though the shape had to visibly appear. As shown in the illustration by Pacioli, shapes could also be used as erasers to leave serif marks at the bottom of some lettering. The Egyptians constructed their fonts through pictograms, this had no strokes, serifs or bowls as we now see in fonts but this shows that the construction of fonts can take on multiple different methods. However, even with pictograms, there were some forms that overlapped between letters. What about characters? Question Marks? The question mark is another one of those universal symbols, like mentioned with the Disney logo. Everyone knows what it means but how did it become a symbol that everyone knew meant that someone was asking a question? There is no evidence to show which theory developed into what we now call the question mark however, there are two theories that vary slightly but both have potential. Theory 1 - the Cat’s tail. Theory 2 - a Latin origin. (I already know which one I would believe). The Egyptians were known to worship cats and the question mark has been linked to the way in which a cat’s tail some times shapes itself. In an inquisitive manner, this shape of the tail was adopted to put at end of sentences when a question was being asked. Similarly, the exclamation mark mirros the shape of a cat’s tail when it is shocked, so this is where the exclamation mark then comes from. But if symbols have derived from cats, how did the @ symbol come about? The second theory appears to have more of a concrete reasoning. It is said, although not confirmed, that in the Middle Ages, to show that a question was being asked ‘quaestio’ (the Latin word for question) would be written at the end of the sentence. As this could get quite tedious, it was then shortened to qo. These two were later placed on top of each other and the development of the question mark appeared.

Without designing the layout, I am unsure of how much text I will actually be able to fit on to the page. For this reason, although this isn’t the final text, I thought it best to transfer on to designing the spread.

Too much to fit on one spread. Needs to be kept short but all of this information is in the brief so will have to put it over two spreads.

The Wired m a g a z i n e provided a lot of inspiration for the inside information. There was a lot of potentional within these layouts and they showed the information I needed in an interesting way without looking too much. Images weren’t placed within them much though so I struggled trying to get the position of these correct.

What have I learnt from this assignment?

This assignment really helped to enforce what I have learnt about typography. When I now say typography, I am not just meaning the fonts that I select, but also considering the layouts and the way in which the text is displayed in terms of typesetting, font sizes and heights, as well as the columns and indentation of text within this. I would like to think that I was quite comfortable experimenting with fonts before this assignment, however, sometimes I struggled to pick out exactly what I was trying to achieve with a certain typeface or why something wasn’t working. Now, after looking at typography and the anatomy of fonts a lot closer, I am able to understand why certain fonts achieve the desired look more than others. This isn’t to say that I have learnt everything that there is to know, but I am starting to gain a better understanding of how typography works. Before this part of the module, I often over looked the purpose of typography. I hate to admit but I thought that it was more about it looking good with the rest of the design. However, after completing these exercises and the assignment, it is clear that typography plays a much bigger part. The font itself has a purpose and it needs to fit in with the purpose and target audience of the brief. Slowly, I am starting to realise this and how the small changes and combinations made between different fonts can help fulfil the brief more successfully. Pairing fonts was something that I always just did through trial and error. Through the exercises, I have been able to do it with more purpose and focus so that I can establish combinations that work, whether this be by using the same font family or different typefaces. Designing things from scratch was definitely something that I thought I would struggle with, however, by using methods outlined in a previous part of the module, I was able to establish some ideas through the drawing of thumbnails and researching other publications. It was interesting to see how I look at the same covers that I have looked at previously but noticing how I now noticed different elements because my personal focus had shifted.

Did I develop the skills I wanted?

I did, it isn’t just about developing skills but strengthening my knowledge around something as simple but effective as typography. I was able to develop my understanding of how fonts are constructed, both as individual letters but also as a whole typeface and the effect the font choice can have on the reading of a block of text; why we have preconceptions of some fonts over others in terms of some maybe looking more expensive that others; how font combinations can work within a space and what other factors influence the choices of font, for example, colours, column structure, page size; and finally I was able to develop my layout design skills. I always play around with how something should be structured, I would like to say I have quite a strong curatorial eye in terms of photography, however, in this final assignment being able to design a magazine spread tested me in a new way. I enjoyed the fact that it didn’t work and trying to find a solution. Taking inspiration from other magazine pages really helped me with this, especially as I picked magazines that had less stereotypical layouts and they too wanted to push the boundaries, like I enjoy doing. But this time pushing the boundaries is done within the guidelines, it is still clear to understand and it is about making the text more readable. In order to develop this further, I think I need to begin to understand the grid structure more. This is something that came up during a small article I was reading for a different part of this module and I am now realising the importance that it will play within designs like these for creating work with strong senses of hierarchy. What I have found over this module though is that I am beginning to understand that hierarchy isn’t just about what is dominant, it is about using the visual language to guide the eye around the frame and each component is a tool used to do this. Images, text and colour are just some of the ways that hierarchy can be changed and as each part develops, I am designing work that understands this more. I don’t think I am quite there yet though, there are some areas that I need to develop further in order to fully understand the process that I am undertaking. If I can find some additional reading to add this development before the final part of the module, I think I will notice a strong difference in the way I engage with visual language.
