What to I think I will be exploring here?

- The composition of text on a page and the effects that this arrangement can have on a viewing experience. - This will probably elaborate on what I found with the Vogue and Elle logos in terms of the effects that vertical height can have on the appearance of a font but also traking and kerning. - How do these changes effect the reading of the text?

What skills do I want to develop?

- Instead of just changing the font if it does work, I want to begin to experiment more with the possibilities of manipulating the different characteristics of a font to make it work. - At this point it is about developing the skills I have learnt throughout this part instead of learning new skills so strengthening my understanding of fonts is something I need to continue to do and perhaps look at this in terms of how it can also effect the layout. - Experimenting more with layouts, I often stick to the same ones, or looking at some very similar examples.

What do I need to make sure that I focus on during my research?

- The way in which the fonts are used to target the specific audience - Layouts of fonts and how different fonts are used in different quantities and styles in order to build a hierarchy. - Use magazines, and different categories of magazines, in order to find different ways that they present the information that they want to show. Different magazines have different purposes and focuses but the main structure can be adapted slightly to better fit my purpose.

What makes text easier to read or harder to read? Is it easy to read? Yes. Why? High contrast. Columns. Strong text. Indented paragpaphs. Text size helps create a hierarchy to know what to read. The text isn’t a large block, it doesn’t look like it is going to take long to read.

Is it easy to read? Yes. Why? Clear divide into sections. The larger capitalised letter indicates where the eye should start. Text is broken up through highlighted fonts. Less contrast here in terms of tones, so less interesting, but doesn’t mean that the readability is decreased. Indented paragraphs. By splitting it up into segments instead of wrapping the text around closer, the text doesn’t seem so dominating.

Easy to read? Yes. But too much information? Yes. There is a lot for the eye to take in here. As applied by the other magazine, there are clear columns and indents for each paragraph but also the titles arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as prominent or exciting. So although it is easy to read. Would I read it? Out of interest, no, but if it were a technique that I really needed to learn, then yes I would.

Is it readable? Yes. All of these magazines seem to have a very similar structure, and even after just looking at these few examples, I am a little bored of consistently seeing the same thing. I want to find examples that are challenging these typical structures a bit more, making the content seem more interesting. However, I guess that the purpose influences this a lot. As a gossip magazine, OK! is going to have a lot of text whereas, something like Vogue wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in the same way.

Focus point -

How is text constructed on a page to not only make it interesting but readable? What characteristics make it harder or easier to read? How do images balance with this? What is the text allignment?

Does this look like it will be easy to read? Yes. Was it easy to read? There was a lot of text which was easy to read, due to the font, but it was put into large sections that filled the width of each fold. The division of text into columns in the magazines works well however, with leaflets like this, the width is too narrow for columns but too large to have large blocks of text. The square around the text does suggest though that it will be clearly divided between text and images which it was.

Easy to read and interesting layout. Combination of two simple Serif and a San Serif font make for an easy read, nothing too complicated. Clear division into columns, two columns on the right are slightly wider. The image going into the text should be make it harder to read but the splash of colour adds interest and isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t high contrast to make it harder or too dominant.

Is this readable? The body text, yes. The heading on the image, not so much. Why is it harder to read? The white text isn’t strong enough against the texture of the jumper. A bolder font is required, something that is harsher, not quite like the ‘Stencil Standard’ font, but maybe ‘Copperplate’ would have had a nice contrast in terms of also being capitals in order to separate the elements. The italicised font isn’t as bad on the second line. But because the photo is so close up, some of the italicised font is also obscured by the texture on the jumper and as this is an even lighter font, it makes it that little bit harder to read. Although one of the images leaks slightly over on to the body text, is is a simple line which doesn’t obscure the readability in the same way.

This is a really intriguing example of where a font has been used twice within the same magazine, one time it is really clear to read, the other time, it isn’t so clear. ‘Work Smarter’ is a phrase that I found very easy to read, however, I was only able to understand that the other page said ‘Gear Winter’ once I had seen the way this font is presented for a second time.

This suggests that it perhaps isn’t the typeface that is effecting the readability, maybe a couple of letters, but it is more the way in which the text has been combined with a second typeface. Equally, the phrase ‘Work Smarter’ is more common and flows better than ‘Gear Winter’. Although the element of contrast between the two colours used for ‘Gear Winter’ does help slightly, it would be benefical to see the entire typeface as this is quite a complex one to trace with your eyes. The image does also effect the reading. As it is new technology, it isn’t an image that particularly helps us to decifer what i says. Although the image of the woman also doesn’t clearly link the text here isn’t obscured by any other text and can be read in full format.

Many of the layouts within this look book worked, I loved the way in which the typography was highlighted alongside images. The use of capitals, not just as isolated elements but also as something to overlap the image, works really well. The scale difference creates an image. Equally, playing with the orientation of the text and the way in which this lines up with each other works well on some pages, or overlapping the text with the images was also a way to create impact. However, there was one page I felt didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work so well and that is the example above. The readability of this text is difficult due to the size of the text and the colour. The text needed to have a heavier weight to it, ot it could have been rotated 90 degrees anti clockwise and put on the white section of the page on the left. This is typically only done with titles or extra details so putting some more important information here would change the typical layouts that the rest of the lookbook is challenging. However, with this page I do like the misallignment of each section as it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fit into a perfect column space like the other blocks of text do on the opposite page.

Yes this is readable, but it isn’t a comfortable read. What do I mean by this? The font doesn’t really suit the orientation that is has been put at. The gaps although beneficial and work when landscape, the abruptness of this doesn’t quite work with the ornate image. I understand that this is the font that features throughout all of the ELLE publications, however, there are other ways this could have been worked. This wouldn’t have had to compromise the size of the text, but it could have been placed over the image, perhaps the dark section in the top right of the image. This would have meant that the image would have become left alligned but the text could have been half black and have white so that it was visible over each section. Looking through the rest of the lookbook, this isn’t a style that they have particularly used elsewhere. However, I think it is needed because out of all the layouts, this is the most expected I found. The layouts within this book are always so interesting, the balance between images and text is perfectly achieved, but this one layout is something I expected to see which makes it just a little boring. I know this isn’t the focus of the assignment, but I wanted to also look at the bigger picture in terms of how photography and text work together.

Is this readable? Yes. What makes it work? For once it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t down to columns in this lookbook! There are still indented paragraphs however, the indents are small. The fact the allignment has also not been set to fully justified means that there is some of the white space left for the eye to take a pause. Although the white block has been used to make the font visible against the intense background, the eye still needs some break from this text. If it were fully justified the white wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the same benefit. Although it would separate the two elements, the text would now also seem very intense so these small sections act as a nice pause.

What did I love about the style of these two articles so much?

Part of the reason I wanted to highlight these articles is because I love the way they have been presented but as part of this I also need to look at why the typography helped the design. I have never seen designs like this feature in a magazine as they all usually follow the same layouts that I showed early on. However, these are not scared to be bold, the use of an electric yellow rectangle, that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually change positions is used playfully so that you think it keeps shifting when really, it is the images and text that change the perception. Although some of the text does bleed outside of these lines, it is still readable between the two segments. This may take a little bit of adjusting to however, to help with this, the information is split into columns to make for an easier read. In particular, I really like the yellow that featured down the middle of the pages in the first article. To begin with, I though that these were cutting off words but once I looked closer, I realised that it had this effect due to the fully justified allignment. I have never seen it used so carefully crafted and it encourages the eye to read every piece of information that is on the page. And although these pages do have a lot of information, the way it is presented doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it seem this way. It is exciting and playful so you want to absorb every bit of information that you can from it.

Is this readable? In part yes. The title font works in a way however, I think there needs to be a bit more contrast than just the colour. I looked at an example previously that worked because there was a large size difference alongisde one was a capitalised version, and the other was lowercase. The italicised part of this works really well but I am a little unsure of the title. Although you can work out what it says, the legibility of individual letters (especially the N) isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t very easy.

Is this readable? Yes. This is some really strong typography combinations here in my opinion. The fact that both the heading and sub-sentence are italicised is something that I rarely consider however, by varying the weights and overlapping the text with the photograph, the combination works really well. The use of columns and indented text works well again on the body text.

Text often highlights the starting letter, making it larger and in a more elaborate font however, I have never seen it done in this way before. It is strong, demands attention, and the rest of the text works its way around the lettering offering it some blank space so that the quantity of text no longer appears too dominant.

The use of a white text box here doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the impact that it had within the lookbook however, the bold colours make the large chunks of text appear a little more interesting.

Summary of what makes something easy to read:

- Columns to break down large blocks of text. - Indenting paragraphs on columns - distinguishes paragraphs but doesn’t break the linearity of the column too much, better than having lots of small rectangles across the page by using a full line break. - High contrast between foreground and background. - Strong, demanding, clear text. - Hierarchy being established between text and elements. - Clear dividers between sections. All of these are very stereotypical ways of making it easier to read. Although these are often the most successful, I wanted to look at some more interesting articles to see how they make it more attractive but still keep this element of readability. It is safe to say some use the same techniques but some are more successful than others.

What makes it harder to read?

- Varying Column lengths - Text overlapping the image ( I understand that the colour helps to add a splash of colour and it is an interesting overlap but it contrasts the clean cut nature of the rest of the article). - Lack of contrast between text and image (on the right the text is really hard to read for the title). - Intricate and unclear fonts - Obscuring text by putting more text on top.

Other ways that it is easy to read:

- Most use Sans Serif fonts for the body text as this is easier to read for many. - Boxing in fonts - creating divisions between sections. - Carefully positioning text in proportion to images. - Placing text on ‘quieter’ parts of an image (like the image directly above this). - Or blocking out the image by using a white block so the text doesn’t get interrupted by the background and becomes easier to read. These methods all seem to use one column and indent the paragraphs, this is a very typical approach and would normally seem quite boring but each of these layouts makes it seem more and more interesting despite using the same methods on how to make text (the main bulk) more readable.

Exercise Lorem Ipsum Focus point -

This was me trying to work out the dotted font, but the identifying program struggled in trying to identify what it was. These were the top suggestions which obviously donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work.

A simple search for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;dottedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; seemed to produce more accurate results, the top results were not the most accurate however, I think Le Havre Layers Dotted is the closest match but maybe not the N.

The font indentifying website was actually really helpful on this scenario as it came up with the correct suggestion and this was itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only one. I knew the font was available in bold form one of the pages so the brutal type fits as the body text for this article.

I originally measured the different columns out however, the final measurement didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work in terms of having 2cms between the edge of the text and the page (as indicated by the small rectangle) I realised that due to the binding of the magazine, it would be hard to tell what size the paper actually is and therefore, I decided to work backwards as I knew the edge measurement and the text measurements were correct but the yellow segment wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t so, as can be seen on the next page, I made some alterations to make sure that this was correct.

1 inch = 6 picas = 72 points = 25.4 millimeters This measurement came in useful when trying to work out the different sizes of the fonts although the gaps between the lettering here doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look like it is the 1.5 spacing as suggested so I may have to change the leading of the text. SHINE A LIGHT is 3cm high = 30 mm (30/25.4) x 72 = point size = 85pt

I was quickly able to identify that the main font was Didot, from my research in a previous exercise, and this was used even for the lowercase of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Hollywood portfolioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. However, I was unsure on the main body text. There were multiple options here but I concluded that Adobe Casion Bold was the font that Vogue use.

Bringing this back to the focal point of the exercise: Focus point -

deconstruct the magazine down to the core elements, what makes it easy to read? What perhaps dictates the purpose that this article has? What are the borders like for printing? Why do the fonts balance well? What kind of hierarchy is established? But most importantly in relation to typesetting - how is the text laid out? What is the allignment like? How is it arranged on the page? How is it arranged in the columns? In many of the examples I have found, magazine articles are split into columns and the text is set at full width without hyphenation. This leaves very clean lines on the page. If the text were to be constantly jolted, then the smooth lines wouldn’t be created and it would create a very uneasy reading across the page. By setting it out like this, the audience is able to create a continuous flow over the text instead of trying to focus on the constantly shifting forms of the lines. In order to create some breaks for the eye, the paragraphs are indented. This highlights that it is a new paragraph, but once again the formation of the columns isn’t completely broken down because there are not entirely empty lines featuring across the page. Two comments that I would really like to highlight: - On the previous article, the text goes right up to the yellow boxes. At first I was slightly confused by this and I was surprised when the text easily flowed from one line to the next in terms of the text actually made sense. However, I do think this gives the impression of a slightly cramped page. The indents of paragraphs are small and subtle which makes the text appear like an even larger section to read. Then, especially the large white border on the left hand side of the spread seems a little out of proportion. Admittedly this isn’t a design I would have considered doing, because it does seem very cramped, however, with a few small adjustments it could work for multiple different purposes. For example, this could be completely changed to be used for an academic journal. In order to do this though, I think I need to develop my understanding for the grid structure and how this is employed across pages. - Not all columns need to be full width alligned. The text at the side of Nicole Kidman’s article doesn’t fit this common theme. However, it works. Why does it work? It works because the blank space is left at the side of the page so it eases your eye in and out of the blank space before going into the blocks of text. It is also a subtle way of mirroring the flow of Kidman’s dress on the other page as all other fonts are very strong, alert and harsh on the edges, they may be Sans Serif in nature but they are still quite harsh fonts.

Changing the leading and increasing the size makes the layout work more successfully. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interesting to look at these changes as I would have perhaps looked at the old version and just said it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work instead of making these small changes so that it did.

What have I learnt at this point?

- I always thought magazine layouts were very similar however, this is because I kept reading the same kind of magazines. Now that I have expanded this slightly, and through this exercise, I have been able to deconstruct what makes an effective magazine layout and what can make it a bit more interesting. - These two magazine layouts were selected because they are made up of components that I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually piece together and being able to construct them in this manner made me realise why they did work. It made me start looking at basic layouts differently and trying to think of a way to make it more visually stimulating whilst keeping the same information. - Magazines like to use typefaces that have multiple options, so using one family for both the heading and sub-heading and then something different for the body text. - A font may not look right but play with the different options of kerning and leading as this can transform the way a font appears on a page. There are so many different ways to change the appearance of a generic font and this is one way, alongside looking at what typeface it gets paired with. - Text plays a much bigger role than I often gave it credit for! Sometimes I just read it but now I am starting to not only read the text but read the font and what effect it has on the page, how I read the individual words etc. This change will help me develop my designs further.

Exercise Hierarchy

The visual hierarchy here seems a little confused. Although the sections help divide the page, my eye isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t immediately drawn to the main title, the contrast of the yellow attracts me to these titles and I find myself ignoring one of the sections as well as the reading what the overall concept of this page is.

Headings seem to use a San Serif font, it is quite simple and they add emphasis in other ways - the example above uses a colour clock. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to start using colour as part of this exercise as the emphasis is currently on the type, so I need to look at ways of working with this more directly.

Focus point - How does text create hierarchy? Identify whether a font looks taller than it should naturally or whether other characteristics have changed. Identify other elements that create hierarchy and how this HELPS the font, remember the focus is the font here.

I went back to the other examples and realised that I had missed the important part of using a San Serif font and very quickly the appearance of this was transformed.

The focus here is Typography and Hierarchy. No hierarchy has yet been created with just one font so this needs to change. Full text choices need to be experimented with in order to learn about hierarchy.

Firstly, it was really interesting to see how the smallest change within these layouts could effect they way it was viewed so much. Some combintations worked really well, whilst others needed continuously changing.

Why does each combination work?

Combination 1 -Engebrechtre, Althea and Adobe Casion Pro The Engebrechtre font is bold in nature with more emphasised capitals. It grabs the attention of the audience and the San Serif font choice compliments the Althea font. This is because the contrast between weights creates a hierarchy that the eye follows in terms of what to read first. Althea has a slight script nature to it as a Serif font. Italicised lettering didn’t work well with Engebrechtre however, it needed the soft curves in order to often the harsher lines. Casion Pro doesn’t have the same kind of height as the other two fonts, which suits its purpose as a body text. If all fonts were elongated, then the eye would have been strectehd too far over the page so this font works well for grounding the other donts. Combination 2 - Bodoni 72 Oldstyle Bold, Bodoni 72 Oldstyle Book Italic and Baskerville. Although the San Serif font worked well as a title font, I did want to try a Serif font. This one has the bold nature that was required and the tails on the letters are thin so the Serif nature isn’t too dominant, the bold typeface is the primary focus. As I noticed in the Vogue magazine, and as then highlighted by my information pack, it is common to use similar fonts, well the same font family for headings and sub-headings but changing the styles. Here this worked, using the lighter italic option contrasted yet compliments the main font. This creates a strong hierarchhy and if the fonts were the other way around, the bold font would be too much and a lighter font wouldn’t grab the attention of the audience in the same way. Baskerville has the curved lettering that is shared by the other fonts meaning there isn’t a large quantity of harsh lines to contrast the other fonts. However, the capital letters do have some autorit and add interest to the body text as well instead of being plain and boring to read. Combination 3 - Bodoni 72 Oldstyle Bold with 72% slant, Bodoni 72 SmallCaps Book and Adobe Casion Pro. Although combination 2 does work, I thought there wasn’t something quite right about it so I used the same font family for the heading and sub-heading before coming up with an alternative combination. This one is a little more interesting and there are harsher lines features by using the Small Caps font. However, by changing the body text font back to Adobe Casion Pro, there are some softer lines compared to Baskerville which helps to both emphasise and soften the other two font choices. Maybe the best combination out of all of them would be to have combination 2 but with the Adobe Casion Pro font.

I went into some shops to have a look at specialist computer magazines however, I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take photos of the articles. However, I was able to make the following notes on the topic:

- Mixture of serif and sans serif for titles - Black and white with an accent colour - each section has a different colour - Clear divides between each section - Generally quite heavily weighted fonts - Formulaic structure - Same font families between headings - 2-3 columns on a page They had a very similar appearance to some of the camera magazines that I have previously bought therefore, I am able to start experimenting with this concept a little more. I know the way I like to make things look, however, I need to start considering the purpose more as the target audience of these magazines wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t appreciate the approach that I would possibly take.

Why does each combination work?

Combination 1 - Azonix 32pt, The Bellovia Sans 18pt, Apple Symbols 12pt It is common in computer magazines to use a very strong Sans Serif font. I don’t want to make the stereotype but the audience don’t want to see all the frills of a script font or maybe even some Serif fonts. Therefore, it is important to find a slightly more interesting Sans Serif font to use that will create some different layers to each font. I had wanted to avoid using two capitalised fonts next to each other, however, the heights and weights of Azonix and the Bellovia Sans work really well together. The strong but slightly squashed nature of the heading font is complimented by the then light and elongated nature of the Bellovia Sans. Alongside this, Apple Symbols seemed like a good middle choice of font. Looking at it now, the font is ever so slightly heavier than that of the Bellovia Sans and in some cases it wouldn’t work, however, here is still works as the middle font establishes itself as a sub-heading in others ways which doesn’t ruin the visual hierarchy that is created in order to show the reader what order the text needs to be read in. Combination 2 - Baron Neue 40pt, Baron Neue Italic 17pt, Apple Symbols 12pt This combination starts to focus on using the same font family throughout an article as this was something that the information pack said was often a good thing to focus on within an article as it allows for each element to flow. Overall the heading font works really well but there are a couple of letters, especially the I that I would have liked to change. This is more of a personal choice though as otherwise the font fits really well with the purpose. Using the same font family for the sub-headings, just changing it so that the font is italicised, works well for consistency but there is no longer the contrast in terms of weight, and both fonts are again capitalised. Although this goes against everything that I said worked for combination 1, where the contrasts in height and weight make it a successful combination, the body text of Apple Symbols now sits more clearly within the visual hierarchy as the weight is clearly the least heavy out of them all, something that would typically be characterised for a body text. This is what makes it work well, there is the flow between each typeface, it doesn’t have to use 3 different fonts which can get confusing for the eye, and a visual hierarchy has been established through this. Combination 3 - Built Titling SemiBold 47pt, Built Titling Italic 20pt, Apple Symbols 12pt Although I knew the previous combination worked, I wanted to find something that would give more contrast in terms of the weight of the heading and sub-heading. The Built Titling font gave me this opportunity as the font is still clearly the same however, it isn’t so closely linked on this occasion. Once againg the Apple Symbols font softens the weight and height of this combination which ground the work within a better scenario. These typefaces work to my advantage in terms of what I have seen in other computer magazines as they are bold, to the point, and don’t have to many serifs and tails that would just not suit the technology style.

How do reviews appear in magazines? The title and details of the author and location are one font and then the body text is another font. Use this and possibly have it in italics instead of in quoted marks.

My original thought was to use a font that linked to the book itself for the review, however, after looking in OK! Magazine, I realised that this was incredibly specific and trying to create an identity across the review section within a magazine wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be done by using multiple different fonts. For this reason, I need to make selections of fonts that could be used on multiple covers instead of just the one.

Combination 1 - Nueva Standard Bold Condensed 47pt, Nueva Standard Condensed Italic 30pt, Optima regular 12pt. The Serif nature of Nueva Standard establishes itself in a position of authority over the body text. This isn’t to say that a Serif font has authority over a Sans Serif, there are a lot of other factors that influence this appearance. This is mainly due to the bold font, combined with italics, and the size comparison. My initial thought with a book review was to use the font that is used on the book however, in a weekend magazine, you want each section of the magazine to have a style that not only links to the rest of that issue but other issues so changing the font each week will not establish this. The lightness in terms of weight o the sub-heading font works really well as an intermedium between the 2 fonts. 1 and 2 share the same font and then 2 and 3 share a similar weight. This is what makes the combination work so well as the fonts all link, don’t have obvious juxtapositions and create a strong visual hierarchy through the slight differences that do appear. Combination 2 - Bodoni 72 Bold 40pt, Bodoni 72 Book 30pt and Palatino regular 12pt This combination is a little similar to the first option. However, the small differences do create a slightly different impression. Firstly, the main header font doesn’t have such height whereas, the sub-heading font does have this height. Having the Bodoni 72 book font as a regular style (not bold/italics/only capitals) does mean that this height issues a strong authority. In some ways this contradicts the main font however, personally I think it works well. The weight establishes a visual hierarchy that highlights that the text should be read first. The height of the sub-heading font establishes it second in the visual hierarchy but it also emphasises that it is an important piece of information to read, after all you do need to know the author’s name. If the 2 fonts weree too close, then the information wouldn’t be able to differentiate itself. The final font is a perfect combination of the two. It sits in between the two varying heights which is where it was important to establish this visual hierarchy so that the body text wasn’t read second (after the sub-heading). Interestingly, all 3 fonts are a Serif. I will be the first to admit that this wasn’t a conscius choice. However, it does keep the flow going scross all 3 fonts which is why this combination is successful. Combination 3 - Gobold thin light 47pt, Gobolg thin light italic 30pt and Chaparral Pro 12pt With the Gobold font, it is really important to get the size comparisons right. Although this is important for every font, the Gobold font gets bolder as the font gets bigger so doing this was something that I really needed to consider with this process. The height helps to assert the authority a title needs without using a traditional bold typeface. And then using a regular typeface without the same kind of height helps to ground this combination, which is why it works. The San Serif nature of Gobold also makes it work better. Although a Serif combination works on the others, there is something about the Gobold font that works for this purpose. Maybe it is because I have seen OK! magazine use a more intriguing San Serif font so Gobold also seemed to fit this theme. Although I think their font is too squashed compared to the body text which is why I subconsciously, I picked one with more height.
