Opening of new FOLF course (April 27th) Vík Extreme Sports are celebrating their brand new FolfCourse, or Frisbee Golf at the Syngjandinn in Vík behind the Gistihúsið Ársalir Guesthouse. The fun starts at 17:00 and a blazing hot barbeque will be lit up with grilled burgers for the folfers and onlookers sponsored by Vík municipality. Hike around Hamragarðaheiði above Seljalandsfoss ( April 27th) A hike with magnificent views in all directions. The hike ends at Núpur south of the Eyjafjöll mountains. The hike guide is Einar "WAPP - Walking app" Skúlason, who will be leading participants on with expertise. Starts at 10:00. Description: Cars parked at the road to Hamragarðaheiði north of Seljalandsfoss. The hike starts on the road up the mountain to the gravel mine used for the Landeyjahöfn docks to the south. From the mine the walk continues east until the edge of the mountains above the farm Hvammur with a view over the Westman Islands. From there the hike proceeds over Smyrill mountain until reaching the heights above farm Núpur with a view east towards Mýrdalshreppur municipality. The hike finishes down the slopes along Íra riverstream and it's beatiful waterfalls. Distance 16 km, elevation ca 500 m and the walking time around 5-6 hours. The hike is relatively obstacle free but the elevation and distance can be challenging for those with limited training/physique. Price is kr. 2500 for the hike and bus to the starting point. Treasure hunt with Vatnajökull National Park (29. apríl) Monday 29th of April the Vatnajökull National Park in cooperation with Katla Geopark offers a treasure hunt around Skaftárstofa visitor centre in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The treasure hunt will be active while the visitor center is open between 09:00-14:00. All are welcome! Everyone who finishes the hunt gets a special prize
Hike on Þríhyrning with Midgard Adventures (April 30th) The mountain is around 680 m high and stands alone and isolated on the outwash plain of Markarfljót river close to Hvolsvöllur town. In clear weather the mountain offers magnificent views of the beautiful surrounding area. Distance from Hvolsvöllur is around 18 km. Total time is around 4 hrs, where the hike itself is around 2,5 hrs. Remember to bring a snack or lunch to enjoy on the mountain. Description: 17:00 – Meeting point at Dufþaksbraut 14 in Midgard Base Camp at Hvolsvöllur. Midgard offers coffee, tea and baked goods for the hikers prior to departure. We will gather and drive in personal cars and/or a car from Midgard Adventures depending on the numbers. Hike cost is 1000.- kr and is paid at the start. Kynningarviðburður RURITAGE miðstöðvar í Kirkjubæjarstofu ásamt heimsfrumsýningu stuttmyndar um Mr. Moss. (April 30th kl 19:30-23:00) Introduction & launch of the RURITAGE Rural Heritage project funded by the EU within Horizon 2020. We will go over the project goals, the work done so far and the opportunities that will open up for the individuals and communities within the Geopark. In cooperation with Friður & Frumkraftar, Vatnajökull National Park and Hotel Klaustur, there will be a worldwide premiere of the shortfilm about Mr. Moss which will be celebrated afterwards with a delicious custom local cake. Happy hour, local refreshments and music - Dont miss out! A day of Education & entertainment at Þorvaldseyri info centre (May 1st) Starts at 13:00. The event is hosted at the future information centre of Katla Geopark by route 1 where the famous centre Eyjafjallajökull Erupts was before. Interesting lecturers from Katla Geopark, The Icelandic Forest Service, the Environmental Agency and others on the geology, protection, forests and various topics within the Geopark. A photo exhibition by Kat Deptula from Vík will pride the walls. Program draft: – Opening words. – Katla Geopark & the work – indroducing the Geopark and the projects. – Presentations from our partners on the work within Katla Geopark – Coffee break. Light refreshments included. – Geolocial characteristics of Katla Geopark in connection with analysis of mantle convection under the tectonic plates. – Geo VR – Virtual reality gear to try for those who dare! Hike with a ranger from the Environment Agency around the geosite Dyrhólaey (May 1st) The hike starts at 15:00 at the parking on Lágey. Rangers invites you to take a walk with them in Dyrhólaey nature reserve. The rangers will tell you about the interaction between humans and nature, explore the bird life and flora which is very diverse in Dyrhólaey. The walk starts at 2 pm at the parking place in Lágey. The walk is about 1,5 km one way, and will take about two hours. It´s recommended to be in good shoes and dress according to weather.
MUGISON concert at Midgard Base Camp (May 3rd) 21:00 Iceland‘s beloved Mugison will be playing a concert at Midgard Base Camp as part of his tour around Iceland. The show starts at 21:00. A feast for the ears from one of Iceland‘s most popular progressive artists! Guided tour with geologist at LAVA Centre in Hvolsvollur (4. maí) Sigurður Jón Björgvinsson, a renowned Icelandic geologist will lead guests through the magnificent geology of Iceland with an emphasis on Katla Geopark. Two guided tours will be open during the day at 14:00 & 16:00. The tours will be in Icelandic. The Offroad Dance, lead by Kaleb Joshua at Njal‘s Saga Centre – May 4th from 21:00 - 03:00 (4. maí) Njal's Saga Centre. FREE admittance and open until 03:00. A cooperative and magnificent end to the GEOweek! The dance is part of the Formula Offroad competition in Hella. The competition is by many considered to be the most extreme form of 4x4 off-road racing. . Don‘t miss this one!
