There is a lost relationship between architecture and meaning. Architecture is not limited to its functional obligations: its responsibility as a source of shelter. Although important, the focus has shifted to architecture’s ability to provide an experience, prompt memories and evoke desires. This demonstrates a social need for meaningful architecture or architecture of personal expression. The connection between architecture’s desire to provide and support a need for identity, and the overall execution of such, is lacking, resulting in architecture that is shallow. Through the application of symbolism a deeper identity can be created. From a holistic understanding of architecture’s ideals and intentions, metaphorical connections can be formed and a designated message portrayed.

thesis project camelot museum
concept The new Camelot Research & Visitor Center aims to create an architectural identity that reinforces the memory and legend of Camelot and King Arthur. The design emphasizes the importance of the flattened peak that was once home to Camelot by encouraging guests to experience the entire site from every point, therefore, the program of the Research Center and Visitor Center will be divided into seven buildings and one open, entrance pavilion. This creates a relationship between the site new Center by placing each of the buildings along the major vista lines that radiate from the existing well. The new Center will tell the story of Camelot not only through its organization but also through the architecture of the complex. Therefore, the design incorporates distinctive castle characteristics that are transformed and filtered throughout the entire Center. As a result, meaning is contained within every design element that restores the mythical legend of Camelot.

concept The concept for the design of Microsoft’s XBOX 360 retail store is a pulse. When Microsoft started designing the XBOX, as a company they wanted it to be an entertainment experience powered by human energy. By incorporating the elements of a pulse, the source of human energy, into the design, the XBOX retail store will embody Microsofts goal of its gaming system. The diagonal line will be incorporated into the major features within the store where as the segmented horizontal line will be integrated into the product display . Also, the image Microsoft has created for the XBOX 360 will be incorporated into the store so the products become cohesive within the space they are displayed. The circle as well as soft, rounded edges will be fused with the elements taken from the pulse. Various tones of grays and lime greens will become the color palette for the retail store.
