hive

noun : a place filled with busy activity : a community, collaborating and working together to achieve a common goal

Austin, Texas DESIGN 06 | TAMIE GLASS | SPRING 2016 Hive is a co-working space for Austin Music Industry Professionals. The campus is designed to accommodate a variety of working styles, foster collaboration between musicians and industry professionals, and encourage community within the Austin music industry. The space will be cross-generational and cross-genre, finding a balance between the different facets of Austin’s unique aesthetic while remaining appropriate for a place of business and productive work. Austin, Texas is known for both ‘keeping it weird’ and its reputation as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’. The city is a cultural melting pot, blending politicians, hippies, musicians, artists, a world-ranked University, hipsters, and a budding tech-start-up community. Reflective of its diverse population, the Austin aesthetic achieves a blend of quirky, grunge, and sophistication, and the residents celebrate the notions of ‘going local’ in everything from fresh foods to purchasing art from street venders. The interior of Hive celebrates the unique culture of Austin, and its thriving creative community by collaborating with local artists, designers, and fabricators for custom furniture, artwork, materials, and architectural pieces. A focal ceiling feature frames high-energy areas, driving circulation and visually symbolizing the hub’s collaborative intent. Re-purposing speakers as an architectural feature responds to the city’s eclectic music history in a contemporary method, simultaneously providing acoustic absorption and generation as needed. The use of reclaimed wood, sleek lines, organic geometries, bright colors, and funky artwork combines to establish a quirky, yet refined, modern--and signature Austin--take on retro design.

This hub would, as a result, boost the Austin Music Industry through means of access, collaboration, and the injection of industry professionals who have historically been based in Nashville.

[BDJ CRAFT WORKS] AUSTIN, TEXAS Furniture designer Brian David Johnson has made a name for himself with his unique ‘resin and grain’ technique. All BDJ Craft Works pieces are handmade from sustainable harvested domestic hardwoods. Johnson allows grain patterns to guide the path of the resin inlay, so each piece is unique.

[SARABI STUDIO] AUSTIN, TEXAS “To create something complex is easy. Simple is difficult. Minimal is brilliant. Sarabi Studio, dedicated to the handmade process of creating custom minimal design, specializes in the production of elegant, timeless furniture and architectural pieces. I propose a collaboration with Sarabi Studio to design the exterior patio landscape--a series of custom steel Tatami planters and two Linear benches, of custom length, powder coated with the same red as the exterior railing.

[ROADHOUSE RELICS] AUSTIN, TEXAS Neon artist Todd Sanders is an Austin novelty. Known for his vintage-style designs, Sanders crafts eclectic neon signs with durable modern materials and specialized weathering techniques. Custom signs throughout the Hive interior liven up the space and emphasize the modern-retro aesthetic.

BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART DESIGN 03 | TAMIE GLASS | FALL 2014

Assigned with redesigning the entry and atrium of the Blanton Museum of Art, I began by drawing inspiration from the complex culture of Austin, Texas. Identified by its active nightlife, live music, and an appreciation for local outdoor attractions, I aimed to transform the Blanton atrium into a sleek, unique space where visitors could pause, gather, and appreciate the atrium skylight. An organic system of stairs transverses the atrium, accommodating a small bar, seating platforms and view points with varying levels of privacy. Integrated stadium seating faces a small stage opposite the stairs, and faceted walls create an immersive atmosphere designed to energize the expansive space and accommodate a variety of visitor demographics.

UNITED NUDE RETAIL SPACE DESIGN 04 | CLAY ODOM | SPRING 2015

Inspired by the avant garde fashion label, United Nude, this outdoor installation reflects immersive, innovative design qualities embodied by the UN brand. The faceted skin of the installation wraps ergonomically across the structure to create wall and ceiling conditions in places, while receding in others. A secondary interior skin emerges from the floor plate to form a central column for displaying UN product, revealing and distorting visibility at specific points. The installation is brought to life as sunlight creates a continuous interaction of light and shadow. The slightly sloped condition of the floor plate encourages circulation throughout the installation, creating a dynamic, immersive visitor experience.

SCULPTURE GALLERY DESIGN 02 | SMILJA MILOVANOVIC-BERTRAM | SUMMER 2014 | 05 WEEK DURATION Tasked with designing a gallery to exhibit the work of sculpture artist Jean Tinguely, the gallery design proposes to abstract the boundaries between interior and exterior space—creating an inviting atmosphere as kinetic as the sculptures exhibited. Located in a 17’ wide alleyway, the gallery provides an urban connection between a busy street front— South Lamar—and the peaceful scenery of Shoal Creek. The narrow gallery gradually opens to an expansive three-story atrium, flooding the space with diffused natural daylight and emphasizing the kinetic movements of Tinguely’s sculptures. A prominent outdoor stair invites street traffic to engage with the gallery patios, each providing access into the building, cultivating an organic visitor experience.

IMMERSIVE CALLIGRAPHY DESIGN 05 | NEREA FELIZ | FALL 2015 Beginning with the study of the Maarten Baas ‘Clay Bookshelf’, I became intrigued with the concept that , abiding by his construction method, clay could defy its natural characteristics and embody any form. The challenge of this studio was, inspired by our shelving precedent, to develop a display system to host a curated collection of objects of our choosing. The collection would be displayed in the Visual Arts Center on The University of Texas campus. I curated a series of handcrafted calligraphy brushes by contemporary artist, Ying Zhou. The brushes, each unique, reflect the handcrafted essence of the Clay Bookshelf. Building from two dimensional graphic studies, the exhibit brings calligraphy to life as planes of lines wrap around visitors, immersing them in an enchanting display of contrast, light, and shadow. Suspended from the ceiling grid, the planes compress and expand to accommodate structure, circulation, and to host the displayed brushes.

TILE DESIGN CONSTRUCTION 02 | TAMIE GLASS | SPRING 2015 As a participant of a ceramic tile workshop, I designed and fabricated the tile based on a series of basic geometries. Glaze can color, waterproof and strengthen ceramic tiles. The combination of matte black and gloss black glaze, in a 1:1 ratio, results in a satin or leather-like finish. The three dimensional angles of the geometric tile softly reflect light, giving the tiles an interesting quality of depth and dynamism and changing their appearance as light moves across a space.

INNOVATIVE REUSE CONSTRUCTION 02 | TAMIE GLASS | SPRING 2015

Challenged to design an innovative wall assembly with minimal ecological impact, we decided to utilize reclaimed, synthetic baseboard material from a local source. Due to the questionable composition of the baseboard material, it cannot be readily recycled. The recovered baseboard was cut into strips, woven together, and mounted on a wooden frame to create a 2’x2’ modular system. We developed two variations of the modules: a standard weave, and a disrupted weave pattern in which the material is allowed to twist and form loops, emphasizing the natural tendencies of the material. The durability and antimicrobial nature of the material make the system suitable for indoor or outdoor use, and, intended to be modular, designed for flexibility. Although the baseboard material has longevity, the modules are intended to be easily disassembled at the end of the product life cycle. The rubber-quality of the baseboard material encourages easy separation of the strips, frame, and staples. Mounting hardware can be reused and the wood frame and staples can be recycled, indicating the modular wall assembly system as a zero waste product.
