Is The Mac App Store the Kick Apple Needs? Apple computers are known for their "creative" stuff, like iMovie, Final Cut, etc. Gaming has traditionally been quite lax on the platform. While a few games have made the leap, the vast majority are still exclusively available on the Windows platform. For many developers, Windows has been the only gaming platform for a long time, so why change now?
The Mac App Store just might be the thing to change all that, however. Many of the quirky games that have been developed for iOS are making their way over to the computer side of things, such as Angry Birds (which runs surprisingly well there). The App Store also makes finding games easy; I didn't even know there was a port of Call of Duty 4 on the Mac until I saw it as a featured app. It’s just point, click, and buy, making it easy to get that impulse purchase and download. There are some technical reasons why Macs aren't known for video gaming as well; mostly their graphics card drivers aren't optimized for gaming, so developers have to work around that. But the availability of small, quick game purchases is what has made the iOS platform's gaming so successful. Duplicating that success on the Mac computer may be exactly what the App Store is looking to accomplish.
