welve years after his birth in the small town of Boaz, Ala., Chris begged his mother for his first guitar after watching music videos on MTV. He joined his first band at 15. At age 20, he loaded his musical gear and whatever else would fit in his van and hit the road. For the next few years, Simmons roamed the Southeast playing rock ’n’ roll and blues in bars and house parties ... anywhere people would listen. In 1997, he joined the Atlanta Southern rockers “Cadillac Voodoo Choir.” While on tour in Texas with the Voodoo Choir, Chris fell in love with the musical mecca of Austin. He now lives just south of Huntsville, Ala., in the rural Lacey Springs community when he’s not traveling with his band, “Royal Blue.” His interest in guitar was initially sparked by ANGUS YOUNG, guitarist of AC/DC. His longing for more knowledge of the blues and the roots of rock ’n’ roll, led him onto CHUCK BERRY, ERIC CLAPTON with

Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes and DUANE ALLMAN and the Allman Brothers Band. It was these guitar legends that inspired him to study the older blues pioneers like ROBERT JOHNSON, MUDDY WATERS, FREDDIE, ALBERT AND B.B. KING. “Johnson is at the top for acoustic blues, Waters for the real electrified blues, the 3 Kings when it comes to the blues solo guitar,” Simmons says. His favorite singers include: OTIS REDDING, PAUL RODGERS, FREDDIE KING, BB KING and MUDDY WATERS. “Leon Russell has been a huge influence, as an entertainer, songwriter, singer, world traveler ... I learned so much. I am blessed to have been a part of his band.” Chris has been playing music and traveling and performing professionally for about half of his life. During those years, and especially the past 5 years on stage with Leon, he’s covered the globe, making music, friends and fans at every stop. 5

sher says her voice is like fine wine; Shakira says she is the perfect singer with the perfect pitch and tone; Rick Hall of the legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala., defines Shawna P as likely “The best soul singer I have ever heard”; Adam Levine says, “This girl’s just a bad ass”; and George Clinton calls her “The Long Lost Queen of Funk.” Shawna P has a big voice and a personality to match. She is The Queen of the EarthFunk Tribe, The Funk Preacha, Pure Mother Earth Energy. She calls her original blend of music EarthFunk Muzik and refers to her supporters as the EarthFunk Tribe. Shawna P not only has a powerful voice, she’s an accomplished singer/ songwriter. In 2013, Shawna P was among more than 50,000 hopefuls to audition for Season 4 of NBC’s hit show “The Voice.” She was just another singer vying for her chance at success. Then the big call came and she found herself in Hollywood among more than 230 hopefuls. Then, after executive auditions, the

contestants were whittled down to 130, prepped and ready to sing their hearts out to the backs of four big red chairs seating four current mega stars in the music industry ( Blake Shelton, Usher, Shakira and Adam Levine of Maroon 5). The unique grit and power of Shawna P’s voice turned two of those big red chairs -- Adam Levine’s “You have a voice on you. We want what you got” and Shakira’s -landing her a spot on Season 4 of “The Voice.” Needless to say, Shawna P’s life changed forever. America immediately fell in love with the Southern funk, soul rocker from Alabama and so did international superstar Shakira, whom Shawna P strategically chose as her mentor. As Shakira said, “Your voice needs to be on the radio today. You are exactly what we are missing. You have so much rock & roll inside of you.” Shawna P did not disappoint her fans or her coach, charting in the Top 200 on iTunes, and gracefully beating out the competition to make it to the top 32 out of 50,000 singers who initially auditioned for the show. Shawna P has been writing and interpreting her own songs for years and even secured a coveted publishing deal while performing with the Muzik Mafia in Nashville, where she lived and honed her craft for 12 years. While living and performing in Nashville, Shawna P shared the stage with great artists such as Kid Rock, Charlie Daniels, George Clinton, Big & 7

Rich, Gretchen Wilson, James Otto, Scott Weiland (of The Stone Temple Pilots), Donnie Van Zant, Robert Randolph and even recorded a duet of her original song with the legendary Michael McDonald. Rolling Stone magazine said “Shawna P mopped the floor with her rendition of Janis Joplin classic “Piece of My Heart.” She even received a personal message of praise and support from vocal phenomenon Kelly Price. More importantly, at the age of 45, she has encouraged people of all generations to never stop dreaming and never stop believing in their dream.

TONEY BOYS

We look forward to seeing you at on June 28th at the Southern Rock & Roll Blues Show & in the meantime “keep it between the ditches ya’ll!

T

he Toney Boys are brothers O.G. and C.W. Toney, who are originally from Nashville/Brentwood, Tenn., and reside in Alabama. They are an original riffbased Southern rock/funk/blues band that focuses on delivering a positive message in a soulful way. O.G. and C.W. grew up surrounded by musicians including Larry Gatlin (neighbor), Dolly Parton, Jerry Reed, Waylon Jennings, The Judds & Ronnie Milsap. The Boys started writing songs in the ’80s and ’90s. (David Crunkleton drums & Joel Cassel guitar). A fire in the early ’90s burned down the band’s rehearsal studio two weeks before a show. All that remained after two years of practice were ashes and a rehearsal tape of the planned show. The music died, careers and families began. Almost 20 years later in 2012, upon the urging of friends and fellow musicians, the salvaged rehearsal tape was taken to Nashville producer Gary “Brotherman” Branchaud of Joyful Sound Co. The result was a 10-song project featuring some of Nashville’s finest

- O.G. & C.W.

musicians: “Brotherman” bass (Percy Sledge, Hank Jr., and Kenny Rodgers to name a few), Tony Haan Jr. on lead guitar (currently with 7 Bridges), Phil Rue B3 on organ (Marshal Tucker band), John Hall on piano (the Platters) and Geno “the monster” Weatherby on drums. The Toney Boys went on to play live with the same musicians that worked on the project, along with one of the greatest drummers in the world, Chuck Tilley (TV show “Nashville,” Lee Greenwood and currently plays with the group Alabama). In late 2013, a Nashville musician/ songwriter & highschool friend of O.G. advised the band to “go out and experience the wealth of talent Nashville has to offer.” The Boys took the advice and started meeting, playing and recording with other Nashville artists and producers, leading to new songs being recorded in Nashville by producer Scott Allen Smith and featuring the musical talents of Steve Sheroan. The Boys have assembled a touring/gig band of local Alabama musicians to promote their music. The Toney Boys are singer/songwriter 11

O.G., guitarist C.W. and Brian Works, bassist Vic Dunavent and drummer Tim McCain. The Toney Boys are releasing two digital EPs. “THEN” features six songs (from the 10-song project of ’80s-’90s material) and “NOW” featuring five songs written over the past two years. All songs on “THEN” were originally recorded live by Shawn Conley at Red Alert Studio in Gallatin, Tenn. The songs on “NOW” were recorded separately. The “THEN” & “NOW” digital EPs are available for fan downloads at The Toney Boys ReverbNation page and will be released to the public at the Southern Rock & Roll Blues Show on June 28 at the Bama Theatre.
