01 | Ventus Nidum | meditation pavilion about the project

Pavilion Ventus Nidum (a winds nest Latin) stands for the meditative experience of the user while being in the middle of the scene where horizon is the main element - a field. Instead of being a focal point from far away while standing, user is guided to lay down towards ground.

The build structure is made out of CLT structural frame and Siberian larch deck cladding. The use of raw natural materials blends it into the scenery, surfaces is warm to touch and ages well under the stress of elements during seasons of Nordic climate .

The user is introduced with 5 spatial composition elements: pathway, slope, shelter and endpoint, where the arrangement of the elements allow to experience diverse types of meditation with main idea - to be in a state of harmony but not get bored.

site characteristics The concept of the project is to build the building according to the spatial nature of the plot with differentiated terrain height marks and the topological characteristics of the school requiring correct room orientation according to daylight and maximum safety from the street.

colour The inner yard is housed on a green roof with porous rubber pavement playgrounds with detail elements which features skylights to illuminate the basement. Skylight structures are brightly colored and serves as spatial accents and playful outdoor furniture for children which make the inner yard a spatially and visually stimulating environment.

safe, innovative and playful environment The inner courtyard separated from the street with classroom volumes is one story higher than the ground level, so a green slope is created connecting both levels. It serves as a place for skiing during wintertime.

03 | The Key | concert hall in Riga about the project

music & noise As site is closely linked to cargo port terminal the main idea of identity for the acoustic concert hall is to soften the surroundings of the possible port's noises by streamline architecture resembling harmonious melodies of the music.

site characteristics Andrejsala is former industrial area of Freeport of Riga now legally included UNESCO world heritage site of Riga Historical Center with developed masterplan (2009). Although site is still strongly degraded urban area, it is a popular among alternative and high-end crowds as restaurant and nightlife area as well as the beloved sunset sightseeing spot easily accessible from city’s old town and embassy district.

revitalization The Key in context of Andrejsala is an important cultural building proposal which serves as the key element of unlocking the revitalization process of the local area by developing already lively urban waterfront and integrating it into built structure with pedestrian slopes and steps surrounding main entrance plaza. Historic heritage is integrated into development by implanting new functions into existing infrastructure. Industrial infrastructure of the port is adapted for new urban public waterfront with yacht docks and preserved old cranes for authentic site character.

view from a cruise ship deck

Design acknowledges building free-standing nature with no so main or secondary facades, moreover - building is seen even from above because of regular Riga - Stockholm cruise ship schedule. The view from the ships deck provides excellent exposure of the building, public urban waterfront and historic architectural heritage nearby. This was on of the strongest argument in favor of choosing the site bearing in mind possible tourism and economical benefits in context of Riga and Baltic region. 21 39

about the project

48

Affordable modular apartments in the suburbs of Riga for young families with landscaped backyards. The building ensemble consists of 2 two-apartment houses and 1 twin house, a total of 6 apartments. The plot is crossed by power lines and the goal of the development was to design strictly along the boundaries of the power line protective zones as well as to save large existing maple and oak trees nearby. Both 2 apartment houses, Dreimaņu 1 and Dreimaņu 3, provide compact 2 bedroom apartments with a fenced yard area, terrace and roofed car parking for 2 cars with bicycle and other household storage space. The twin house in Dreimaņu 5 design is more spacious 3 bedroom apartments with terrace, balcony and car garages and separate utilities room.
