TOPIC DESCRIPTIONS “Trauma-Informed Approaches: What is it? And why is it different?” and “What is Traumatic Stress and How Does it Impact People?” Rachel Ramirez, MA, MSW, LISW-S All creatures have been biologically designed to respond to stress, human beings are no exception. When stress becomes overwhelming or traumatic, it has the potential to impact many parts of our lives. This can include our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relationships and view of ourselves and the world. How do we make our interactions with people who have experienced trauma helpful, supportive and healing? A trauma-informed approach designs our agencies with the unique needs of survivors of trauma in mind. Come think about how to make your agency and system more trauma-informed. Come to share, listen, learn and leave with ideas for next steps! “Working to Integrate Trauma-Informed Approaches into DV Shelter Services: CHOICES - The Franklin County Experience.” Nina Lewis, LISW-S The use of trauma-informed care is considered a best practice for working with victims of domestic violence and is becoming better understood and widely supported. What does a trauma-informed care program approach look like day in and day out in the shelter? How do program residents, community partners and funders actually know that the DV shelter program services provided are based upon traumainformed approaches and principles? Come to the presentation and find out! “The Integration of Trauma-Informed Care in the Community Outpatient Setting.” Mary Beth Gannon, PCC The focus of this presentation is to continue the dialogue of using trauma-informed care and practices within the outpatient setting. The goal of this presentation is to increase the understanding of what trauma-informed care looks like within the daily actions of an outpatient setting of Mount Carmel’s Crime and Trauma Assistance Program.
