Basic Concepts and Vocabulary about Fair Trade Biodiversity The wide range, great numbers and diversity of species. Certification To say in a formal or official way, usually in writing, that something is true, correct or authentic Chocolate The most popular confection whose basic ingredient comes from cocoa seeds. Consumer Someone who buys goods for personal use Cooperative The independent voluntary union of people to cover common needs and achieve common goals. Developing countries The countries which are often described as “Third World countries� and show low rates of financial, industrial or technological growth. Economy The process or system by which goods and services are produced, sold, and bought in a country or region Employment A particular work, the human activity that aims to produce a product, material or spiritual Environment The set of natural, social and cultural conditions in which individuals live. Exploitation Using someone or treating someone unfairly to serve one’s personal interests or benefit


Basic Concepts and Vocabulary about Fair Trade Logo A graphic representation or symbol of a company name, trademark, abbreviation, etc., often uniquely designed for ready recognition. Organic products The products which are grown without the use of toxic chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides. Plantation A big stretch of land where crops of the same type are grown. Producers The people who are employed in the production of goods, commodities and services, which aim to cover human needs. Rights Legal, social, or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement, according to the legal system. Slave Trade The trade of human slaves. It was developed along with slavery. Slavery The institution that legalizes the treatment of people as commodities Society The set of people who live together abiding by certain rules. Solidarity The sense of caring about or helping each other and being united among people who share common interests and goals. Sustainability The production of goods which involves preserving natural resources and natural balance for the future generations. Transcaction The exchange of goods or money to cover human needs.
