UP NORTH

Wisconsin, Fall 2013 Inspired by Jens Jensen’s writings, I drove north from Chicago to rural Wisconsin where he used to escape the city to seek inspiration from the natural landscapes. I documented the experience through photographs and writings.

Front Cover: MICRO SITE SURVEY

Overlook Field School, Summer 2017 In Collaboration with Flora Chen This 6’ x 6’ plot survey depicts values of different elements and qualities on the ground. Some of these elements are tangible materials (moss, twigs) while others are ephemeral (moisture, wind). Through the use of different amounts of pressure and ink and layering of meticulous marks, nuanced instances and location of each element were recorded.

The SW Corridor of Barbur Blvd design aimed to provide multi-modal transit as a means of propelling economic growth and neighborhood revitalization. A site analysis was conducted, including GIS parcel & zoning data and building massing modeling in Rhino The goals of Arterial Urban Center sub area were to slow traffic down, create a pedestrian friendly area, provide new types of building typologies for the area including mixed residential & co-working centers, and provide aesthetically pleasing stormwater facilities to encourage local business investment and social interactions on the SW Barbur Boulevard commercial corridor.

Strawberries, mountains and water relate to the town’s history and pride and were motifs driving the design. The plaza would be used for community gatherings and would include a stage for summer concerts, beer garden patio, terraced steps and a water feature for children to play in. 8

FLORENCE FIRST HARVEST COMMUNITY GARDEN City of Florence, Oregon January - August 2013

Project Designer & Director with 30 local volunteers Covered in Siuslaw News, Issue No. 61. July 31, 2013. Built on an unused city owned-lot, the goal of the project was to promote sustainable development, increase food access, crime prevention & community partnership in the city of Florence. Using local demographics and food security data, a proposal was written and presented to City Council, which highlighted the economic, aesthetic and community benefits of building the garden. The proposal was unanimously approved, and with the help of about 30 volunteers, the garden was built and is still thriving today. 12

FILTERS

Overlook Field School, Summer 2017 Filters was inspired by the convergence of the bright orange oxide and the clear river water at the borehole in Old Forge. Robert Irwin wrote there is no separation between object and its environment - that they are completely interlocking. In this case, the panels have absorbed the landscape. Through exploration of use of screens and light to create rooms, the scrims filter the view through a spectrum of color and light. There are moments of distortion and clarity as one moves through the panels or rooms, looking backwards and forward. The final panel, however, provides a true confluence or overlapping of conditions that are no longer mutually exclusive - orange/clear; disturbed/pristine; waste/beauty.

CHANGE THE COURSE: NEW PRECEDENTS FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN VULNERABLE NEIGHBORHOODS Portland Mercado | Portland, OR University of Oregon MLA Studio, Spring 2017 Team members: Yang Ye, Laurel Sleeper & Cameron Yegge Outdoor spaces designed by me; building renderings by others.

The goal of this project was to provide a new precedent for culturally attentive affordable housing for populations with a history of being displaced and forgotten through decades of housing and development practices in Portland. The FosterPowell neighborhood is an epicenter for gentrification and actions must be taken to ensure people are not left behind. The main components of our design include: three housing typologies for varying family sizes including multi-generational households, a courtyard for social gatherings, and a work/ study space for teenagers and budding entrepreneurs to work. 16

HYBRIDS

Denver, Colorado UC Denver MLA Studio, Fall 2015 The scope of the project was to explore the application of patterns onto a public plaza near Cherry Creek, to create hybridized conditions of different materials and experiences. The design was meant to create thresholds and cues to stay, making this barren transient space more of a destination with opportunities to linger and enjoy.
