The site is located on the edge of Alleghany river at the intersection of 7th street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard. It is situated in the midst of the Pittsburgh Cultural District with several historic landmarks around.

This concept of the housing was to provide a design that can help residents maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes nutritional, physical and mental health. We kept in mind the hybrid work lifestyle that people have trying to adapt post the covid-19 pandemic. The public program in the building are set in such a way that people have access to healthy groceries, ready meals, gym, mental therapy rooms and an indoor greenhouse park: all at one stop which they also call their home. The greenhouse at the top is maintained by the residents. The greens crawl into the therapy rooms as well. They gym and the cafe on the ground floor are open for oublic access as well.

The residential units have fixed modules catering to services like kitchen and bathroom but the bedroom and the living spaces can be jumbled around to change in studio, 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom with or without balconies depending on season in Pittsburgh.

A Breathing Machine

This studio unpacks an architectural entanglement with extraction, exploitation, and capital to explore emerging models for transformative socio-ecological praxis (In this context, Praxis refers to the processes and mechanisms through which Just Transitions are developed, communicated, and realized). Understood in its broad socio-ecological context, architecture is a form of ‘worldmaking’—buildings consume vast amounts of resources, entail labor and material extraction both visible and invisible, and also harbor the hopes and aspirations of communities often spanning generations. What tools, methods, and frameworks might the architect be equipped with, to enable new modes of worldmaking situated in ethics of care, a socio-ecological praxis that implicates both formal and political processes?

The aim of this greenhouse proposal is to facilitate a transitional phase in the Homewood community through the revival of a vacant manufacturing building into a co-operative market and conservatory, creating opportunities for employment, community building, and access to resources.

SHE IS IN-CHARGE

The electrical trade has historically mostly been occupied by men, one out of 50 electricians is a woman. And these women are observed to be more motivated and dedicated. Added to that, they seem to be thriving and are proud of their work. A part of the reason for gender bias construction industry might be due to how men and women are raised. While boys are typically playing with tools, cars, and other “male” toys, girls are being encouraged to play more with female stereotypical toys. Apart from this, the construction trades, in general, are valuing and demand an idea of “toughness” in leadership. Some perceive men as predominantly more strong, consciously or subconsciously. They have a higher chance of being hired or even applying in the first place. But, in the case of electricians, the work is not as physically challenging compared to other trades. Even then, males get an upper hand because they might be expressing this so-called stronger attitude. In addition to this, not forgetting many unpleasant experiences that some women have had in the trades. The elephant in the room – women, transgender, and gender nonconforming construction workers have frequently experienced verbal and physical harassment by their colleagues. Inappropriate things are said to them on a job site making them feel uncomfortable, unwanted, and disrespected as an authority or leader despite their skills and qualifications. Some are also chalked up as “locker room talk” — using vulgar or explicit language.

Indian Institute Of Heritage Conservation

The conservation & restoration of cultural heritage focuses on protection and care of tangible cultural heritage including artworks, architecture, archaeology and museum collections. The program situates itself in the context of the World Heritage city of Ahmedabad. It engages with the historic built environments, urban histories, theories and contextual design approaches. The target group of people would be – students and tourists. The Heritage conservation Institute would cater around 500 – 600 students for their post gradtuation amd diploma. It will also offer short courses with certificates and also hands-on workshop courses. The footfall during the workshop/ seminar or a temporary market may vary from 800 - 900 people.

The intent of the design was to incorporate public activities like seminar and exhibition spaces into educational activities like architecture studios and material workshops. As the site is located on the banks of river Sabarmati and is adjacent to the Riverfront Walkway, it is easily accessible for the local visitors and the tourists. A 3 x 3 m module was repeated and intersected multiple times to create different volumes on a number of different levels. This created various interactive points which were not only physical but also imply a sense of transperancy to the entire project. Green pockets of 3 meters and 6 meters are included at every point such that a hierarchy of Wcourtyards is created from private to public spaces.
