GLENN MURCUTT STUDIO DUNN’S SWAMP RECREATION CENTRE Dunn’s Swamp is a historically rich area in Wollemi National Park, New South Wales. This scenic area is known for its naturally sculpted mass of pagoda rock formations, and contrastingly open landscape. The concept behind my scheme was based on this feature of ‘layering of the site’. The recreation centre is designed to be treated as a ‘transparent’ space, perfectly balanced inbetween the solid pagoda rocks, and the open water. The brief was to create a recreation centre for 32 students/adults + 2 teachers (including room for disabled access), and a private residence for a caretaker and his family. Besides residental features, it is to also cater to the needs of day-visitors. 3

This concept of transparency was adopted to allow for visual as well as physical interaction of the occupants with the entire site, in a private manner. The flexibility in my design allows for a maximum of 8 guests in a room (a singular ‘pod’), or a minimum of 2 in each room (depending on whether the visitors are a group of students, or families/ couples). Private meeting spaces were also designed inbetween two pods, which allow guests to mentally immerse themselves in the water. The dining hall, being a more public space, has uninterrupted views of the entire site on all three sides.

Efforts were made to keep all energy and environmental systems hidden from the public eye. Through extensive research, waste and water re-use systems were chosen. As for electricity, solar energy was chosen to be the best system for the particular site. Although the building is composed of solid walls and planes, every space offers a unique experience of the landscape, thereby immersing the occupant entirely in every aspect of the extraordinary context.

BONDI APARTMENTS + RESTAURANT A site in North Bondi was chosen, in order to design a block of 10 modern, luxury apartments, along with a fine dining restaurant. Being a site known for its heritage buildings, extensive site study was done in order to study and maintain the local characteristics of the site; egress and access standards were strictly followed, along with other rules layed down by the Building Code of Australia. The primary aim was to design a modern piece of architecture, that also adhered to the laws of the local council. 11

The unique shape of the site stood as inspiration for my ideas. The chosen concept was based on interlocking volumes and spaces, thereby allowing every apartment to be spaciously planned out, yet with each and every one enjoying the beautiful view of Bondi beach. The splay in the balcony of each apartment has been designed in order to protect each occupant’s privacy. This particular angle and splay was chosen based on a study of the solar path - in order to also protect each apartment from the blazing afternoon sun.

I also played with, and tested numerous other concepts and models to study light and shadows, along with the benefit of pitched roofs - collecting rain water. The buildings have been set back in front, for complete privacy from the street, and also to allow for acoustic privacy from the restaurant below. A garden with walkways and ample seating encourage interaction between residents, and allow for large gatherings and outdoor barbeques. Walkways around the central courtyard and between the buildings (on the first and second floors) were not only designed to facilitate guests to enter their apartments, but to also serve as an aesthetic element that defines the apartments.

DOUBLE HOUSE + GALLERY
The brief was set to in order for us to study the particular relationship between private living and a commercial gallery. My clients were siblings, who also ran a gallery together. Having a sister of my own, I took their relationship personally, and drew up a challenge. The precedents I chose to study were Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, and Adolf Loos’ Villa Muller. I combined Loos’ principles of simplicity in form and intrigue in function along with Le Corbusier’s principles of simple, free facades in order to design interlocked houses. The gallery lies free from this complexity. The glowing façade speaks openly to the general public.

The interlocked houses are separated by private gardens in the centre, open to the sky (one belonging to each sibling), and allowing natural light to wash the interiors completely. However, the residences remain transparent yet private. The open public gallery, also boasts of naturally diffused light and an airy feel. It begins and ends with a view of Sydney city and beyond.

BUILT PROJECTS AUSTRALIAN TIMBER DESIGN WORKSHOP FURNITURE DESIGN TEAM The Australian Timber Design Workshop was a two week design and build experience, where 40 participants were asked to design and build a gardening tool-shed along with furniture to facilitate outdoor learning for a clientele ranging between Kindergarten kids, through to Year 6 students. Being a part of a group of 6, that represented the furniture design team, my design was chosen. Since the client base was ranging, the idea behind the design was to allow for children of every size to find a spot to sit on, that would particularly suit their size. The design also accomodates a larger group of children to sit together, in a comfortable manner.

A KNIGHT’S TALE : VICTORY
What I learnt through this creative study was that ‘communication’ is the key to understanding Architecture. The aim of this project was to build and locate a conceptual model based on the architectural principle of ‘transparency’, numerous times on the same site. However, each image was to tell a different tale.
