Th a n k you t o. . . Family

My parents Ramachandra Bhat & Adithi R Bhat, sisters Rashmi and Vaidehi, husband Govind Raj and in-laws Ishwar Bhat and Mahalakshmi Bhat.

Faculty

Leonarda Tamayo, Olga Zhovreboff, Stephen Hoffpauir, Kathleen Valkuchak, Mark Miller, Edward Pertcheck, Felix Goebel and Ernie Mariotto.

Friends

Sakara Morf, Jenny, Annie, Casie, Akanksha and Wei.

I would like to dedicate my portfolio to my beloved husband who trusted and supported me. I cannot think of any person who would be happier than him when I graduate. It has been nearly three and half years since I started studying Interior Architecture and Design at AAU. It has been an incredible journey since then and all the events at AAU have influenced me in one way or other and that has been reflected in this portfolio publication. I am grateful to my esteemed faculty members of AAU. They have helped immensely in pushing the boundaries and helping my build my confidence as a designer. They have been kind enough to spend time answering my questions and guiding me on any issues that I have had at AAU. I would like to thank my friends and classmates for being there for any help that I needed. They have been great companions at school and it was really fun spending time with them. My family has been very supportive during this education. My mother has been truly an inspiration for me and she has always been there to guide and motivate and cheer me up, even during the most difficult times. I would like to dedicate my accomplishment to everyone in my family.

RE TAIL DISPL AY The display units are placed at an angle to entice the customers to check out the products; the angled placement provides a better view of what’s in the shelves at a quick glance. Tall shelves make good use of the twenty feet ceiling height. Suspended lights light up the shelves and the first floor.

RE STAURA NT LO BBY G U E S T R OOM Guest rooms have organic patterns on walls. Jaali design on windows let guests experience the beauty of the light patterns. Restaurant has a geometric shape that is inspired from the wings of an airplane. The design aims to bring back nostalgic memories of Alameda which was a military airbase during 1930s. The lobby design is a metaphor for a wave that rises up, touches the ceiling and trickles down as droplets.

D ESIGN CONCEP T

“Simple, Sleek, Fresh, Warm A home is a place of belonging and comfort where we enjoy togetherness with family and friends. Cafe design has been inspired by Roman Architecture. Example for Roman architecture is “Pantheon building located in Rome, Italy. It was built as a temple for all the pagan gods and it celebrates the Roman emperor. Pantheon was built by a Syrian-Greek engineer, architect, designer Apollodorus of Damascus. Morally, it is a symbol of equality. Architecturally, this building has a combination of square and circles, dome and columns, large to small hierarchy from circular floor to small hole on top of the dome.

View from the cafe entrance towards private seating. The cafe ceiling is the abstract of traditional dome that are found in ancient Roman architecture. The ceiling is made using metal to provide industrial look for the cafe. The display units adjacent to the cash wrap helps customers to grab products while waiting in line to order coffee.

86

SKETCHES

ROTUNDA The important elements of the Roman period considered in design. Egalitarianism - religious equality. Hierarchy - followed in administration and society. Practicality or utilitarian - buildings were designed to be useful or practical rather than be attractive.

ELLA’S RESTAURANT Project Description This projects aims to redesign an existing restaurant to improve customer experience and build brand loyalty. And also to start dinner service along with brunch and lunch.

112

113

D ES IGN CONCEP T

Statement Dynamic motion of a human body. The design concept is inspired from Neoclassical paintings which narrate stories of Renaissance period with vivid colors and dynamic motion. This design aims to express the fluidity of human body by blending organic shapes. Just like the Neoclassical paintings express the links from one character to another, different design elements connect with each other to create a dynamic motion in the space.
