It’s a digital jungle out there! Why then is it that we continue to attend live performances? A click on just about any device can deliver pretty much any song or video. And yet there’s something about attending a live event that cannot be replaced by technology — something visceral, something genuine, something really human. It is more than observing, and more than the artist’s work, ideas or interpretations. It is about being part of something bigger than just you; about sharing moments with others in an intimate setting, a communal experience that takes moments of joy, reflection, inspiration and sadness, and elevates them to a sacred place that mirrors our shared existence. At the Meek, our series of offerings are designed to provide opportunities for you to experience artistic excellence produced globally, nationally and most excitedly, right here on the North shore. We bring you a diversity of disciplines (music, dance, theatre, song), in a multitude of genres; classical, traditional and contemporary. I invite you to gift yourself, your friends and loved ones, and maybe even the person next door with tickets to a live performance! We promise to deliver many incredible opportunities for you to escape from day-to-day life and give yourself, and those who join you, an amazing shared experience. I guarantee you’ll feel better after each visit. Cheers!

Claude A. Giroux Managing and Artistic Director

His ancestral knowledge, set to song, places him among the most influential voices of contemporary Africa. Eric Bibb, who also absorbed some of his talents from his famed father, has established his name as a new generation blues-men without renouncing the legacy of folk and gospel. So, what could be more natural than for this Malian and African-American to join the rhythms of their guitars and voices in some transatlantic blues?

BRAD MEHLDAU TRIO

Monday, April 29, 2013 8:00pm $48/$45 (Student Rush at the door)

Brad Mehldau has performed with his trio and as a solo Pianist at a steady pace since the mid-1990s. With a musical personality that forms a dichotomy, he greatly cherishes the surprise and wonder that can evolve from a spontaneous musical idea. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind, and the order in which they reveal. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, expressing itself as a beginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. Two personas—the improviser and the formalist—play off each other. The effect? Controlled chaos and an evening not to be missed!

SHANE KOYCZAN

Saturday, May 11, 2013 8:00pm $29/$25

You only have to hear Shane Koyczan read once to be hooked – humane, furious, sexy, political, tragic and so funny you’ll be laughing through your tears. With musical accompaniment by ‘The Short Story Long’, Shane moves from subdued, deep, sad, love poetry to power chord hip-hop meta-meter. Powerfully engaging and authentic, Koyczan’s explorations are relevant to our times in the way that Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen are to theirs. But unlike the musicians that he’s compared to, poets rarely infiltrate pop culture. As Winner of the US Slam Poetry Championship, Koyczan is the talent that has blown the dust off of the designation “poet”.
