Designer’s Note

This book conatins my personal selection of projects that I have worked on throughout the years. The assortment of works within my background in hospitality, residence, workplace, and mock-up showflats has tought me versatility in style and approach to a particular space.

A big chunk of my career was spent in Singapore as an FF&E Designer. Over the years I have grown to understand that there’s more to this specialization than meets the eye. Aesthetics is on one side of the coin, and function on the other. Knowing which material to use and where to appropriately use it provides value to a space; creating balance by using volume and scale gives impact to an interior. Over the course of browsing my portfolio, furniture, fabrics, layering and texture are presented. One might ask what exactly is FF&E? It stands for Furniture, Fixture & Equipment. Yes, I take care of all these plus hardware, fittings, hard and soft finishes. At times, purchasing is also part of the deal.

FF&E is only one facet of many folds in a project. This shaped me to be a team player; to respect other’s work and time so that our parts seamlessly bind one another in an effort to come up with an excellent design solution.

DISCLAIMER

All artworks, images, and information presented in this portfolio are theproperty of theirrespective owners. The designs showcased herein are a result of collaborative efforts during my tenure at various companies and organizations. While I have contributed significantly to these projects, the intellectual property rights belong to the respective clients and companies. My involvement as a designer was in the capacity of an employee or contractor, and I do not claim ownership of the original works unless explicitly stated. This portfolio is intended solely for the purpose of showcasing my skills and experience in the field of design.

Looking back as a neophyte designer, I know very little about design, more so FF&E but I allowed fate to take its natural course. When I chanced upon an FF&E position in a respected firm in Manila, I fearlessly took the opportunity. I am forever grateful to these people who opened the door and trusted a young designer. They were not bosses but mentors. Thoughts of my humble beginning keep me grounded.

Though difficult at times, the love for my craft inspires me to continue the journey as a designer wherever I am; to be in a place where my expertise and skills are valued.

A journey of discovery:

Alishan’s treasures

Nestled within the Alishan mountains, the 84 key hotel of IHG’s Hotel Indigo brand showcases tribal aestetics against an organic and lush nature backdrop.

Tribal community and nature are touchpoints of the design reflected althroughout the hotel. As shown above, the All Day Dining is a representation of homeyaya or the Tsou millet festival where each member of the family must participate in the sacrificial ceremonywhich includes meals, visits and drinking- to worship the goddess of millet. The rods serve as partition for privacy mimicking the millet. Other nature inspired materials accompany the rods such as engineered wood seen on flooring and solid timber slats grace the ceiling as well as grey terrazzo cladded on walls with metal inserts to add luxe to the overall vibe of the space.

Furniture are also carefully selected to give the tribal feel in the ADD. Driade’s Pavo Real and Maxalto Febo to name a

few brands. Banquet seating is covered by high-performance felt fabric to repel food and drink stains.

Meanwhile, guestrooms are mirrors of vernacular dwellings in contemporary setting. Most materials shows weaving technique to emphasize on handcraft workmanship of the tribe. Rugs are depiction of body of water and designed & coordinated with the local maker. Several exchanges of strike-offs took place to achieve the desired look and comfort feel.

Contrary to expectaton, dealing with Taiwanese vendors and manufacturers is not much of a challenge since most speak decent english. With the advancement of technology (translate and messaging apps) coordination becomes easier.

Indigo Alishan is set to open its doors in 2022.

Celebrating the roots where many legendary operas have been set, Indigo Hangzhou was inspired by all facets of a “Yue” style opera.

legends while guestrooms are representation of the opera with MOD’s interpretation of the musician’s lounge, actors’ dressing room, and playwright’s abode.

The All Day Dining is one of the highlights of the hotel showingoff the intricate ceiling detail that adapted the organic form of a snake-- based on Hangzhou’s Legend of the White Snake. The mosaic tiles on walls and terazzo flooring give visual texture to the space while maintaining a calm and quiet atmosphere.

Executive suite is the so called musician’s lounge. Soft color palette is used to be in line with the Yue opera’s light colors. Musical motifs are incorporated into the space such as wall art and turn table for guests’ relaxation.

Working on a creative concept has been fun and inspiring. It opens a world of possibilities from design, material & furniture selections, and styling, Connection with international manufacturer’s and suppliers from all over Asia and Europe brings in new knowledge and opportunity to explore for the project’s benefit.

Soon to open its doors in Q4 2022.

The Green Apartment by Brewin Design Office is a 4-bedroom, 350 sqm, low-density luxury apartment in Nassim Park, Singapore inspired by the botanicals surrounding the area-- an extension to the lush exterior gardens.

Extensive renovation was done to make the space light and airy for living by knocking-down walls and replacing the flooring with engineered wood boards.

Designer furniture from Europe and America filled the space that complements the customized pieces with the finest craftsmanship of Australia.

Top notch construction firm housing all its departments in a skyscraper

Above: Magestic reception lobby of the YTL Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Right: Cafe style meeting area at level 8.

The YTL headquarters in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia spans about 3,000 sqm floor area, housing a dozen of YTL departments.

One would feel dwarfed upon entering the majestic 20-meter high ceiling. The cloud art installation by Studio Sawada visually breaks this towering height. Walls are claded by bugatsa marble with bronze insets, complemented with look-a-like Barcelona bench in brown leather.

A bronze portal leads one to the lift lobby that provides access to YTL’s upper levels that includes floors to host visitors and clients.

Levels 8 and 9 are connected by a spiral staircase composed of bronze stainless steel bars and vinyl timber steps. The cafe is intended to be an extension of the lobby where guests may hang-out before a meeting. Warmer tones were used for these levels with interesting features on the cafe counter.

The polished black granite countertop and split-face black granite counter facade stand-out against the bronze and oak backdrop. Generally, walls are in oak and flooring in honed silver mink marble.

Meeting rooms in level 9 and 10 used the same material palette with Milliken carpet flooring. Several configurations are offered such as open cafe-style, semi-enclosed rooms, acoustically private rooms, mulit-function room, small rooms that may open up and combnied with other small rooms.

This YTL office has won several design awards internationally.
