ESPAI CEL
LOCATION : BARCELONA, SPAIN ESPAI CEL ARCHITECT :Barcelona, MARIA ALMIRALLSpain FERRERONS LOCATION: AREA : 553.0 SQUARE METERS
ARCHITECT: Maria Almirall Ferrerons YEAR OF COMPLETION : 2019
AREA: 553.0 square meters BEFORE BEGINNING THE DESIGN OF MY OWN BATHHOUSE I RECOMPLETED: 2019 SEARCHED DIFFERENT TYPES OF BATHHOUSES TO STUDY THEIR PROGRAMS AND HOW I CAN IMPLEMENT THEM IN MY OWN BATHHOUSE. THE THERMAL SPA, ESPAI CEL STUCK OUT TO ME THE MOST. THE SPA IS LOCATED IN BARCELONA, SPAIN ON AN ANCIENT THERMAL WATER DEPOSIT. THE STRUCTURE IS AT LEAST 300 YEARS OLD BUT WAS RENOVATED BY ARCHITECT MARIA ALMIRALL FERRERONS IN 2019. HER AIM WAS TO “RECOVER SPACES, HISTORY, AND THERMALISM.”FERRERONS ACHIEVED THIS BY KEEPING THE ORIGINAL STONE WALLS, USING ANCIENT TANKS-- NOT MACHINES-- TO COOL THE THERMAL WATERS, AND SHE DESIGNED THE SPA AS A MAZE WITH POOLS BEING REVEALED AT EVERY CORNER. ESPAI CEL IS COMPOSED OF EIGHT POOLS WHICH ALL OFFER A VASTLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE, SUCH AS A SECLUDED POOL FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO HAVE PRIVACY, A HOT POOL, A COLD POOL, A POOL THAT BUBBLES, AND EVEN AND OUTSIDE POOL THAT GIVES GUESTS A VIEW OF THE SKY. I WAS INSPIRED BY ESPAI CEL’S MATERIAL PALETTE THAT INCLUDES STONE, BRICK, AND CONCRETE. THE USE OF NATURAL LIGHT AT ONLY CERTAIN LOCATIONS ALSO DIRECTED MY USE OF LIGHT IN MY BATHHOUSE

“DEUX FEMME FANTASQUES” WAS PAINTED BY
THE ARCHITECT LE CORBUSIER IN 1937, ORIGINALLY ON A 1.15 M X 1.46 M CANVAS.THE PAINTING DISPLAYS TWO WOMEN WHO ARE VISIBLY DIFFERENT, AS ONE WOMAN IS A DARK, EARTH-LIKE COLOR, WHILE THE OTHER IS A MORE VIBRANT COLOR. THOUGH THE WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT, THEY SEEM TO BE CONNECTED THROUGH SHAPES THAT FLOW FROM ONE HALF OF THE PAINTING TO THE NEXT.

00_EXTRACTING THE SHAPES
[EXTRACTING THE CONTOURS]
MY FIRST STEP IN ANALYZING THE PAINTING WAS TO EXTRACT CONTOURS FROM IT. I FOCUSED ON EXTRACTING SHAPES THAT STUCK OUT TO ME AS BODY PARTS, OR ANYTHING THAT SEEMED TO EMBODY FLUIDITY BETWEEN THE WOMEN SHOWN IN THE PAINTING.

USING THIS DIAGRAM I ANALYZED HOW THE CONTRASTING LIGHT AND DARK COLORS FROM THE BACKGROUND OF THE PAINTING ARE CONNECTED. I DECIDED TO CAPITALIZE ON THIS FOR MY CONCEPT THAT OPPOSITES -- WHICH IN THIS CASE ARE LIGHTNESS AND DARKNESS-- ARE CONNECTED. AT THIS POINT, I BEGAN TO THINK ABOUT HOW TO CONNECT LIGHT AND DARK SPACES IN MY BATHHOUSE.

[LEAST DENSE]
[ LEAST DENSE ]
THESE DIAGRAMS DEPICT HOW I THOUGHT TO ARRANGE THE VESSELS I CREATED IN MY SITE. I PLACED THEM IN ORDER FROM LEAST DENSE VESSEL TO MOST DENSE VESSEL. THE LEAST DENSE WOULD BE AT THE HIGHEST POSITION OF MY BATHHOUSE AND RECEIVE THE MOST SUNLIGHT, WHILE THE DENSEST WOULD BE AT THE LOWEST POINT AND RECEIVE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT.

SITE INFORMATION:
PROJECT LOCATION : PALISADES, NY SITE DIMENSIONS : 96’0” X 96’0” CONSTRUCTION OF THE BATHHOUSE TOOK PLACE IN A 96’0”X 96’0” SITE LOCATED ON A CLIFF IN THE PALISADES WHICH OVERLOOKS THE HUDSON RIVER. USING THE VESSELS I CREATED I STUDIED HOW I WISHED TO PLACE THEM IN THE SITE. TO DO THIS, I USED THE VESSELS TO CARVE INTO A BLOCK REPRESENTING THE SITE --AS I WOULD DO TO THE ACTUAL SITE OF MY BATHHOUSE. AS I DEVELOPED MY BATHHOUSE I DECIDED THAT IT SHOULD CATER TO COUPLES.TO EMPHASIZE HOW LIGHTNESS CONNECTS TO DARKNESS I FOCUSED ON GETTING LIGHT INTO EVERY SPACE IN MY BATHHOUSE AND CONNECTING SPACES THROUGH A LITERAL FLOW OF LIGHT

[PERSPECTIVE 01 : ENTRANCE] THE ENTRANCE MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE JOURNEY THROUGH THE BATHHOUSE. IT IS THE BRIGHTEST AND HOTTEST SPACE IN THE BATHHOUSE AS IT RECEIVES THE MOST SUNLIGHT. IT ALSO INTRODUCES WATER INTO THE GUESTS’ EXPERIENCE OF THE BATHHOUSE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, THROUGH THE SHALLOW POOLS LOCATED IN THE SPACE. CHAPTER

THE HOT BATH RECEIVES THE SECOND MOST AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT. AS THE HOT BATH IS LOCATED IN A HOLE IT EMPHASIZES THAT THE COUPLE IS LEAVING AN EXTERNAL SPACE AND DESCENDING INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE SITE.

[PERSPECTIVE 04 : WARM BATH 02] THE SECOND HOT BATH IS WHERE THE BATHHOUSE BECOMES NOTICEABLY DARKER. USING THE STAIRCASE IS USED TO DIRECTLY ENTER THE POOL FROM THE OUTSIDE. FROM THE POOL, A GLASS WALL GIVES A VIEW OF THE SKY AND CLIFF. CHAPTER

[PERSPECTIVE 05 : PASSAGE TO COLD BATH] THE PASSAGE TO THE COLD BATH IS A RAMP THAT SERVES AS THE LAST CHANCE FOR A COUPLE TO EXPERIENCE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT. THE PANELING SYSTEM SHOWN IN THIS PERSPECTIVE IS USED AS A WAY TO ALLOW SUNLIGHT INTO THE COLD BATH WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WALL AS SOME PARTS OF THE WALL ARE SOLID WHILE OTHERS ARE VOID SO LIGHT IS ABLE TO CHAPTER

THE COLD BATH IS THE DARKEST SPACE IN THE BATHHOUSE AS IT RECEIVES THE LEAST AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT. THE DARKNESS OF THE POOL GIVES A SENSE OF PRIVACY FOR COUPLES. THE PANELING SYSTEM ON THE WALL IS USED FOR DECORATIVE REASONS AS WELL AS FOR STORAGE OF TOWELS AND ROBES, AND SEATING.
